The results of “MEMBER INVESTING” are evident with the significant addition of new members, the large attendance at our recent luncheons and increased participation at the committee level. We are committed to keeping our focus on you, our members. With that, we are addressing your request of more networking opportunities by putting into action a networking activity at EVERY event – so be prepared and attend with plenty of business cards! Our March program directly correlates to networking by introducing the game of golf as a business development tool, whether on the course or in conversation. Networking will be the only focus at our quarterly “After-Hours” event at The Grape, located at St. Johns Town Center. In April, our guest speaker will deliver an informative presentation to assist and empower women in the male-dominated business world. Networking and professional development opportunities continue to be provided to you. CREW is only as strong and successful as its members are! You can assist CREW Jacksonville with fulfilling this pledge by supporting your chapter in sponsorship to secure high-level venues and speakers. I encourage you to utilize the benefits of becoming a program sponsor (luncheons or after-hours mixers); the visibility and company branding of sponsorship will provide you with the leads and referrals CREWmembers command. I am so honored to be serving as your 2007 President and excited to be working with such brilliant, committed, and fun Board of Directors! Together, we all succeed. Terry Durand 2007 CREW Jax President Immediate Past President - Denise Henderson, SERVPRO Philanthropic Committee Chair - Linda Hill, Fidelity National Financial Sponsorship Committee Chair - Beth Lipko, Colliers Dickinson www.crewjax.org Volunteer for CREW in the music they joined the chorus on stage! CREW was represented on this uplifting evening by Susan Evans, Laura Head, Laura Heberlie (and son Jacob) and Pam Ricard as we handled the food line. The Communications Committee is looking for YOU! We have two openings on our committee. We are seeking a photographer, staff writer and a Chair in Training for 2008. The time commitment varies with the opening so please contact Susan Evans for more information. Come be part of the CREW Jacksonville Programs Committee! We are looking for excited individuals to help coordinate luncheons, handle RSVPs, help coordinate speakers and contribute to the planning of future events. This is a fun committee to get involved with that meets once a month. The time commitment varies so please contact Jennifer Harkleroad for information. After a few announcements were made, it was time to eat. As the crowd mixed with adults, students and children came through the line, we began serving the food. We were joined on the serving line by Nora Milne, a regular volunteer for PACE events. After eating, there were contest questions about the values and principles of PACE with prizes for the winners. Selected students were asked to pick a value and principle and share what it meant to them. These young ladies were very inspiring. The Membership Committee is looking for a few good people interested in being mentors and recruiters. Contact Melissa Gross-Arnold. The Philanthropic Committee is also looking for a few good volunteers who are interesting in working with PACE. Please contact Linda Hill for more information. Partnership with PACE Susan Evans, Laura Head, Pam Ricard, Laura Heberlie and Jacob above. PACE Choir entertaining crowd below. Participating in PACE’s Family Night was a very satisfying experience. I don’t know if we could ever really understand the circumstances of their lives or the sacrifices made by these young ladies as they work to turn their lives around, but spending a few hours with them gives life a whole new meaning. It was wonderful to watch the interaction between the girls; between the advisors and the girls; and within the staff. You can see a special trust and camaraderie that seems to develop on several levels making you think this program can’t be anything but successful. Check out the PACE table at our monthly luncheons to obtain information about PACE Center for Girls and how you can make a difference. As we continue to participate in scheduled volunteer opportunities involving PACE, we’ll have sign-up sheets for those events at the PACE table. In addition, you can pick up a brochure that details how you can volunteer your time individually. We’ll also have a donation basket if you’d like to bring items such as movie passes or gift cards that can be given to the girls who have earned incentives. We welcome your ideas and participation. I would urge everyone to volunteer for any of the many opportunities provided at PACE. We should be proud to be partnered with such a great program. Birdies for Charity While we are all in the golf mode, it is only appropriate to identify another way for us to help PACE raise money. Birdies for Charity is a contest where you can win great prizes and at the same time, support PACE School for Girls. A birdie is one stroke better than a par. If a hole is a par 4, you would have to put the ball into the cup on your 3rd stroke. PACE Family Night The theme of the evening was the Brilliance of Beads whereby the students earn different colors of beads that are tied to the values and principles of the PACE program. The food, which far exceeded the estimated 70 attendees of the evening, was provided by Bono’s BBQ and the Honey Baked Ham Store. The entertainment was provided by the PACE chorus (or half of it) as they performed a few songs closing with their upbeat rendition of “Lean on Me.” A few people in attendance got so wrapped up Here’s how it works. Make a pledge of two cents or more for each birdie made www.crewjax.org What’s Happening PACE Continued during the competitive rounds of The Players. If 1500 birdies are made, your pledge would be a $30.00 contribution to PACE. Or, make a flat pledge to PACE with a minimum pledge of $25.00. Get everyone involved that you know because the local organization raising the most money will be awarded a bonus of $10,000!! To give you an idea of past events, there were 1385 birdies made in 2006; 1559 in 2005 and 1580 in 2004. Upcoming Events APRIL Event CREW Jax is proud to announce that Chris Flett of Flett Ventures will speak to our membership in a highly informative and entertaining presentation entitled, ‘What Men Don’t Tell Women About Business.’ Chris, a successful entrepreneur, advisor and business coach has worked with over 1,800 business owners and entrepreneurs (75% women) across North America and spoken to tens of thousands of women from 2,500 people at the National Museum in Washington, D.C. and Harvard University to intimate settings of 20 in local coffee houses. In this lively, interactive and sometimes surprising keynote, he will tell us what really drives businessmen, how women undermine themselves with male colleagues, and steps female professionals can use to take back all their power and control in business settings. Don’t miss this chance to see a real alpha male in captivity with a room full of women. Here’s what you can win: Grand Prize: A trip to Montreal and The Presidents Cup with complimentary airfare and hotel accommodations for four nights (Wed-Sat) September 26-29; weekly car rental; two weekly clubhouse tickets for the tournament; preferred seating at the opening ceremony & two tickets for the big gala. 2nd Place: Golf trip to Las Vegas; complimentary airfare & hotel accommodations for two nights; golf for two at TPC Summerlin and TPC Canyons. 3rd Place: Two clubhouse tickets for the 2008 Players Championship. She follows international, national, and regional developments, and plays a key role in helping shape the bank’s investment strategy. She is thus an advisor to both the Private Bank, which offers a full range of financial services to high-net-worth individuals and families, and other units of Global Wealth Investment Management, which furnishes investment and brokerage services throughout the country. Opportunities to Help PACE PACE is having their prom on Saturday, April 14th and there are two ways our CREW members can help. They could use 3 volunteers to help set-up food and keep it refreshed during the evening. The prom is from 8 - 11 pm, so volunteers are asked to arrive between 7 and 7:45 pm and then they can leave any time between 9 pm and 11 pm. The theme this year is Hollywood. Staff and volunteers dress to the occasion and it’s a fun time for all. PRI transforms the activity center, Tony Mann is the DJ and the girls get their pictures taken. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Pam Ricard (Brown Enterprises) 724-2262 E-mail: [email protected]. Dr. Reaser conducts about 300 interviews a year with newspapers, magazines, radio, and television stations located in the United States and other parts of the world. She currently serves on the Board of Directors of the National Association for Business Economics. She also has served in a number of government advisory positions and chaired the American Bankers Association’s Economic Advisory Council. You will want to bring co-workers, clients, and potential clients to this highly informative and strategic presentation. SPONSORED BY BANK OF AMERICA If you can’t volunteer at the prom but would still like to help, PACE is accepting new and gently used prom dress donations for the girls through April 3rd . Please contact Suzanne Tomlinson, Special Projects Manager at PACE (448-8002 ext. 367) for more details. www.crewjax.org Recent Programs presentation on what the port has planned for now and in the near future. With Mitsui Shipping lines already under contract and another major shipping company in the wings…Look out Jacksonville the Industrial Market is about to explode! Hobart Joost, from Colliers Dickinson gave a short overview of how all of this means more business for everyone, the ripple effect will follow, with both the Office and Retail Markets seeing increased business as well. Isn’t it great to be in the Commercial Real Estate Business in Jacksonville! It’s all about a TEAM working together. This was the message delivered by January’s speaker Cindy Delaparte, First Bank of Jacksonville. Ironically coming on the heels of the University of Florida first national championship victory over Ohio State this year, her theme and the key to hers and bank’s success is Cindy Delaparte with Terry Durand very apropos. According to Delaparte, in a TEAM, every player/staff member plays an important role to either the success or defeat of an organization. This permeates throughout and at every level. Think about it. In order for an athletic team, let’s just say for the sack of discussion The Gators, the players do not do it alone. The grounds crew, ticket agents, trainers, front office staff, statisticians and coaches have a stake in the ‘game’. Without this support, the athletes would not be able to effectively execute and focus on what they do on the field. In March we learned the meaning of the word GOLF Gentlemen Only Ladies Forebidden. Becky Sauers delighted us with her candor and confidence in regards to the world of golf. Becky, a LPGA tour professional and Top 50 Teaching Pro has devoted a good portion of her career encouraging women to play the game. Becky did a fabulous job of de-mystifying the game for those of us who have never played. This luncheon also marked the begining of CREW golf lessons. Over 20 people signed up to take instruction from Ed Brill at the UNF Golf Center. The lessons are going great and confidence is building in our new golfers. Let us not forget the fans, a.k.a the customers. If a team is not performing, providing and delivering quality entertainment or service, they lose fan support and revenue – just like a business will lose clients. The whole experience surrounding “the game” is what can make or break a season/ fiscal year. The same philosophy exists within the environment that Delaparte has created. Her tellers, back office folks, loan officers all need to work together in support of their Coach – Cindy. The Coach/CEO, in turn, has a responsibly to her ‘team’ to equip, train, motivate and empower. If all are not acting on the same game plan, or from the same Mission Statement, defeat or lose of business is inevitable. Look at First Bank’s tremendous growth as an example of a TEAM working together. Beverly Henderson Who said you can’t learn anything from sports?? However, I’m sure Cindy prefers at the end of the day, First Bank’s fresh cookies over a Gatorade Bath! Guest Columnist Cathy Disbrow February’s Luncheon was a great success, we had a significant turn out which included 40+guests. Mr. Rick Ferrin from Jacksonville Port Authority gave a very informative Beth Lipko, Becky Sauers & Ed Brill www.crewjax.org Membership 6. Tell me about your LEED accreditation and the demand for green building in the Jacksonville area? Member Spotlight We are pleased to introduce Joanna Rodriguez, Vice President of DesignWorks Architects, a Powell Design Group Company. Joanna joined CREW Jacksonville in February 2007. Joanna is a LEED Accredited Professional. “LEED” stands for “Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.” There is also a LEED Green Building Rating that is the nationally accepted benchmark for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. According to the U.S. Green Building Council website, “LEED Accredited Professionals have demonstrated a thorough understanding of green building practices and principles through familiarity with LEED requirements, resources and practices.” Joanna has not seen a lot of demand for green building in Jacksonville yet, but she thinks the increased use of green building techniques is inevitable in our area because of the prospects of reduced operation costs, longer building life and increased employee productivity. She explained that buildings use 48 % of the energy used in the United States. She pointed to UNF, which now requires at least one person on each project team be a LEED Accredited Professional, as a sign of the future. She says that green building is interdisciplinary, involving architecture, site design, landscaping, electric, lighting, mechanical system and building products. 1. Where are you from? If not Jacksonville, how did you arrive here? Joanna was born and raised here in Jacksonville. She is a graduate of Bishop Kenny High School and still has extended family in the area. Joanna Rodriguez, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP 2. What is your educational background? Joanna earned a Bachelors of Design with Honors in 1975 and a Master of Arts in Architecture in 1977 from the University of Florida. 3. What made you choose the profession you are in and what is your history in the field? Originally an art major, Joanna was encouraged by a professor to enter the architecture program at the University of Florida. She began her career with The Lawrence Group Architects and Planners in Palm Beach, Florida, and then moved to Gee & Jenson Engineers, Architects, Planners in West Palm Beach. She returned to her native Jacksonville to work for KBJ Architects, Inc. in 1981. She then had her own practice until 1991 when she joined DesignWorks. 7. If your friends described you with five words, what would they say? Loyal, well-organized, empathetic, problem-solver, and a good friend. 8. Have you done any volunteer work? Which organizations or groups? 4. What do you enjoy most about your profession? Joanna is active in the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects (“AIA”). She is currently the chair for an AIA initiative to encourage arts in area schools. In connection with this initiative, the local AIA Chapter has partnered with Pine Forest Elementary to teach students about city planning and design. With the help of the AIA Chapter, the students will build a gym-sized “box city” to help demonstrate these planning and design concepts. Joanna says that she enjoys the ability to help clients solve problems by synthesizing ideas into a design solution. 5. Do you specialize in any particular types of architecture? Joanna does extensive work involving public school buildings and other institutional structures, including work for JaxPort, JEA, JIA and the City of Jacksonville, as well as banks and other corporate clients. Her firm has also recently merged with Powell Design Group, based out of Orlando, which has done extensive work on condominium and multiuse projects. With offices now in Jacksonville, Orlando and Ft. Pierce, she is expecting to be doing more work outside of Jacksonville, as well as being able to offer a wider range of architectural services here in Jacksonville. 9. How did you learn about CREW? Joanna learned about our Chapter from member Susan Evans of Auld & White Constructors, Inc., with whom she works regularly. Joanna plans to participate in the Programs Committee of our CREW Chapter. www.crewjax.org Delegate’s Corner New Members On behalf of the entire CREW Jacksonville organization, we would like to welcome our newest members: 2007 CREW Network Winter April Blackwood, Interior Architect/Design Intern, JSA Inc. Luncheon Ladder Sponsors Let’s Do Lunch! Participants meet for lunch once every other month in small groups. The date, time and place are coordinated by a “captain.” There are still several opportunities to sponsor CREW this year. All our sponsorships are open to more than one noncompeting firm. This year we have added the ability to sponsor individual lunch program in addition to our Diamond and Platinum Sponsorships. Each month the participants are rotated into different groups so that each lunch is with a new set of people. Each lunch group is comprised of representatives from different business lines to maximize networking opportunities. With this program, we can further the quality and quantity of networking among us. We recommend being a captain – in that way you can maximize your own participation as the captains set the dates, thus ensuring their own participation. We are very excited to be able to offer this new program! Please email Lauren Langham at llangham@ smithhulsey.com or call at 359-7724 to sign up. We are so thankful for our 2007 Annual Sponsors!
