City Manager Jim O’Reilly, Gulfport
Councilwoman Christine Brown, and
Harbormaster Denis Frain met with
Grant Bond of the Citizens Against
Derelict and Illegal Boats (CADIB)
initiative. The meeting, which was
held last month, resulted in two
unrelated derelict vessels removed by
the FWC last month.
But this is not enough for Bond.
Another boat sank on Wednesday,
September 30 and another on
Saturday, October 3. Bond claims
both boats were reported before they
sank, but were not removed from the
bay.
Bond says he was also told by the
Coast Guard that this area in Florida

Volkswagens of all shapes, colors, sizes and ages
invaded Pass-A-Grille in St. Pete Beach Saturday,
October 3 for the annual VW Beach Bash. Organizer
Amanda Trail said about 80 cars were on view at
the event, now in its seventh year. Hundreds of
visitors came to the venue on 9th Avenue to admire
the cars, also known, among other things, as love
bugs and hippie buses.

Gulfport’s Tomlinson
Lake Skate Park
Effective October 1, all skaters
and bicyclists must purchase a new
city of Gulfport Skate Park sticker to
use the city of Gulfport’s Tomlinson
Lake Skate Park. Stickers must be
visibly placed on the helmet. Annual
fee for stickers is $5 for residents
and $10 for non-residents. Also, all
skaters and bicyclists 17 years of
age or younger must have a signed
parental consent form filed at the
Gulfport Recreation Center which is
located at 5730 Shore Blvd. S.
Any skater/bicyclist found in
violation of these terms will be
subject to the following at the
police officers discretion; temporary
trespass, permanent trespass or a
minimum $88 fine.

Born on the Bayou Celebration of
the 105th anniversary of the city’s
incorporation.
The day’s festivities start with
a free pet parade, organized by
Gulfport Get Rescued. From there,
there will be retro kids games,
music, the mullet toss, Fishermen
feats of strength (grown-up games),
trolley history tours, and free guided
kayak tours, courtesy of Sea Tow
Tampa Bay. Signup for the kayak
tours is limited. They will sign
people up starting at 9:30 a.m. and
provide transport from the museum
to the kayak launch site. Pets, kids,

James Schnur is a Special
Collections Librarian at USF St.
Petersburg and a lifelong resident of
Pinellas County, and presently holds
adjunct teaching appointments at
Eckerd College and the USF School
of Information. He has also served
as president of the Pinellas County
Historical Society, as well as on
the boards and committees of other
cultural and historical organizations
in Florida.

Squadron will hold an anchoring

This seminar explains how to
select the appropriate anchor,
rode and components and their
use depending on sea and bottom
conditions. Tables are used to
determine the sizing of your anchor
and its components based on the
size of your boat. Materials include
USPS’s Anchoring Quick Guide and
Student’s notes with copies of the
presentation slides. Cost is $35 per
family.
