My Nutrition Line-up Magnet! Time to Play! Everyone needs physical activity to stay fit. Try riding your bike to school or practice, walking to the park, taking the stairs, or strapping on your skates. Set a goal to do these activities for 30 minutes each day. BE A HEALTHY JUNIOR GIANT BE A HEALTHY JUNIOR GIANT It’s important for you to get at least 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day. All forms count – fresh, frozen, dried, canned, and 100% juice. Use the magnet to chart how many you eat each week! See how many fruits and vegetables you can eat in one day, and track your progress on the magnet. Challenge yourself to not drink any soda during the summertime. Aim to drink at least 5 glasses of water every day to keep your body hydrated, especially when it’s hot outside. Drink water before, during, and after practice. 5 Turn Off the TV & Computer! Challenge yourself to not watch TV or play on the computer for more than 30 minutes each day. You’ll have more time to play outside and use your energy in a positive way. Don’t Forget to Brush! Protect Yourself! The best way to keep a nice smile and clean teeth is to brush twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. Remember, after brushing your teeth at bedtime, do not drink or eat anything except water. Always remember to fasten your seatbelt, apply sunscreen, wear your helmet, and wash your hands. It will be an informative, fun day for kids and parents. Everyone will receive a special gift for attending. Ask your commissioner about an event near you! IMAGINE PEACE CONTEST 5–10 years old: Create a drawing, painting, or other artwork with your violence prevention message. Artwork cannot be larger than 11x17. 11–18 years old: Create artwork, a short essay, poem, or song with your violence prevention message. Entry should be no longer than two pages, double-spaced. The Giants Community Fund is proud to offer a summer reading program for all Junior Giants players. Simply use the inserted scorecard and start along the base path towards first base. Round the Bases Reading Levels and Prizes! ROUND THE BASES READING PROGRAM Second Base: Read for 240 minutes (4 hours) and receive a Giants folder. Third Base: Read for 480 minutes (8 hours) and receive a Giants notebook. Home Run: Read for 720 minutes (12 hours) and receive a Giants binder. If your ENTIRE TEAM reaches this level, then you are eligible to play at AT&T Park for Home Run Readers Day on Saturday, August 15th! ALL COMPLETED SCORECARDS MUST BE TURNED IN TO YOUR LEAGUE’S COMMISSIONER BY WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5TH IN ORDER TO QUALIFY FOR PRIZES. Each year, ten Junior Giants Scholars are selected to receive a $2,500 scholarship after high school and other support for their education. The Junior Giants Scholars are honored at an on-field ceremony at AT&T Park. You don’t have to be an A+ student to be a Junior Giants Scholar. We select our scholars on the basis of leadership, character, Junior Giants involvement, and academic potential. If you are selected to become a Scholar, you will be asked to attend and participate in a pre-game home plate ceremony. 10 JUNIOR GIANTS PARENT PLEDGE Dear Parents, The Giants Community Fund is thrilled to have you and your family participating in Junior Giants baseball. More than just fundamentals on the field, it is a program that includes Character Building, Health, Education, and Violence Prevention, with the goal to teach kids to live healthy and productive lives. We ask for your support in these key areas by encouraging your child to participate in all the programs Junior Giants offers. 1. I pledge to get my child to practice and games on time. 2. I pledge to use positive encouragement to fill my child’s Emotional Tank. 3. I pledge to reinforce the ELM Tree of Mastery with my child (E for Effort, L for Learning, and M for bouncing back from Mistakes). 4. I pledge to “Honor the Game.” The Junior Giants Four Bases of Character Development are Confidence, Teamwork, Integrity, and 5. I pledge to refrain from yelling out instructions to my child. Junior Giants is a recreational program with the emphasis placed on working together and learning from each other, not wins and losses. We ask for your help in maintaining a non-competitive atmosphere, without keeping score during the games. Simply said, the Community Fund is a unique organization. We are a public charity with a tie to the great game of baseball – a sport that convenes people of all ages and from all walks of life. The Junior Giants Willie Mac Award will go to one A Junior Giants Willie Mac recipient exemplifies teamwork and leadership JUNIOR GIANTS WILLE MAC AWARD on and off the field. Junior Giants Willie Mac Award winners are recognized 13 during a home plate ceremony on the field at AT&T Park on either Junior Giants Day or Coaches Recognition Day. All award winners, as well as their families, are invited to a special luncheon after the season ends.
