Annex‐ B; Agenda of Closing Ceremony Awareness Raising Campaign on Sustainable Transport in collaboration with Fatima Jinnah Women University 3 Introduction In order to address the transport related issues in Pakistan, the Government of Pakistan is implementing a UNDP and GEF funded project with the title of Pakistan Sustainable Transport Project (PAKSTRAN). The team of “PAKSTRAN” project is working to mitigate the local environmental and other problems of the increasing traffic such as deteriorated urban air quality and congestion. The objective of “PAKSTRAN” project is to reduce the growth of energy consumption and related greenhouse gases emissions from Pakistan’s transport sector. As per the project document and annual work plans project activities are being executed by four Component Implementation Units (CIU) and a Project Management Unit (PMU). CIU‐IUCN is responsible for the implementation of awareness raising and capacity development outcome and in continuation. Also one key objectives of PAKSTRAN is to promote understanding about the sustainability concepts related to sustainable urban transport, which can influence a wider cross section of the society in Pakistan. As part of the outcome ‘Increased public awareness and institutional capacity on sustainable transport concepts’ it was important to engage the youth of Rawalpindi, so that they may have a better understanding of what basically PAKSTRAN is and how it is beneficial for all. For this purpose Fatima Jinnah Women University was approached and a poster competition and a slogan competition were organized under the Pakistan Sustainable Transport (PAKSTRAN) Project in FJWU, Rawalpindi. The event aimed at effectively engaging the students and youth of Pakistan to raise the awareness related to sustainable transport. 4 Awareness Raising Campaign on Sustainable Transport in collaboration with Fatima Jinnah Women University Proceedings 1. Orientation Session of Awareness Raising Campaign Welcome Remarks & Introduction to PAKSTRAN and awareness raising priorities – Ms. Fauzia Bilqis Malik. Ms. Fauzia Malik, Manager, PAKSTRAN, IUCN Islamabad Programme Office Pakistan, in her welcome remarks gave brief overview of the PAKSTRAN Project along with other projects of IUCN, and welcomed and thanked the faculty and students of FJWU in showing keen interest and participation in the competition. Ms. Fauzia also gave presentations that began with an introduction to the PAKSTRAN and also described the Project’s activities under the approved work plan and explained what awareness raising and capacity building activities were being planned under Outcome 4 i.e. ‘Increased public awareness and institutional capacity on sustainable transport concepts’. The presentation was followed by screening of the documentary “The Road to Sustainability”. There was a huge round of applause from the students at the end of documentary showing that message has been conveyed in an appropriate manner. The students from various disciplinarians like English, Business, Economics, B.Ed., and Environmental Sciences participated in the event. Ms. Ayela Ashfaq‐ Research Officer (Communication) gave briefing on the campaign activities and schedule of the programme. During the orientation session students were informed regarding two activities including poster and slogan/message competitions that will be organized under the campaign. Two winners will be selected from each competition and the winning students will be awarded with cash prizes on closing ceremony. On the occasion Ms. Samina Bukhari‐ Registrar at Fatima Jinnah Women University encouraged the students to participate in competition that will be a good addition to their portfolio. She appreciated PAKSTRAN project as good civil consciousness and gave her thought that Bus Rapid Transit BRT system must be promoted in Pakistan. She further explained the audience why better transportation was critical in these times when Pakistan’s urban centers are clogged with surging traffic. 2. Poster and Short Video Clip Competition A total 13 entries for poster competition on the topic of ‘Socio‐Economic and Environmental Aspects of Sustainable Transport in Pakistan’ were received by the participating students from Fatima Jinnah University. After the evaluation of poster submissions the panel of Jury members selected two posters for first and second prize. Awareness Raising Campaign on Sustainable Transport in collaboration with Fatima Jinnah Women University 5 Students also participated in slogan competition on the topic of ‘Sustainable Urban Transport’. Fourteen entries were received. Two slogans/messages were selected by jury members as the first and second positions. 3. Closing Ceremony of Awareness Raising Campaign The awareness raising campaign at Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi was officially finished by the closing ceremony during which winning students were announced and given certificates. The posters and slogans of all participating students were displayed at the venue of the closing ceremony. The proceedings formally started with the recitation of verses from Holy Quran. 3.1 Welcome Address by Country Representative, IUCN Pakistan Mr. Mahmood Akhtar Cheema, Country Representative IUCN Pakistan/ Component Director PAKSTRAN project was requested to deliver his welcome remarks. He appreciated the work of students and their participation in the awareness raising campaign competitions. Mr. Cheema also informed the participants that worldwide there is an increasing awareness on the importance of sustainable urban transport, due to its relevance for climate, air pollution, health and other related areas. This calls for extensive advocacy and awareness raising efforts with people from different age and professional backgrounds, in order to achieve a real change in policies, projects and impacts from sustainable urban transportation. Prof. SSamina further said thaat we look forward to conttinued collaboration and connection with IUCN and PAKSTRAN N for the national develop pment and progress off the societyy. 8 Awareness Raising Campaign on Sustainable Transport in collaboration with Fatima Jinnah Women University MoU Signing Ceremony Held between PAKSTRAN Project and FJWU The Letter of Agreement (LOA) Signing Ceremony for the establishment of Center for Environmentally Sustainable Transport and Climate Change was signed by Mr. Hasan Nasir Jamy, NPD PAKSTRAN / Additional Secretary, Ministry of Water and Power, Islamabad Ms. Samina Amin Qadir Vice Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi on Friday, October 30, 2015. During the ceremony Dr. Samina Amin Qadir, Vice Chancellor of Fatima Jinnah Women University appreciated the efforts of PAKSTRAN Project for engaging academia to achieve the sustainable development goals in the country. She expressed the wish to work in collaboration with Ministry of Water and Power the Implementing Partner and Project Management Unit of PAKSTRAN Project. The purpose of Center of Excellence is to facilitate the dissemination of knowledge to the policymakers, planners, researchers and engineers by developing Interactive Web Portal and establishment of Database. This will achieve the objectives of environmental awareness raising, advocacy, knowledge management and sharing on climate change and environmentally sustainable transport. On the occasion Dr. Saleem Janjua, an eminent subject expert and National Project Manager of PAKSTRAN Project informed that the Center of Excellence through collaborative arrangements would assist in linkage building and networking by joint research activities in collaboration with potential national and international partners. Dr. Janjua further said that the Center would carry out advanced national and international applied research, capacity building of relevant organizations. Furthermore, CESTAC would provide repository of information, knowledge management, consultancy and policy advisory / advocacy on environmentally sustainable transport and climate change related services in the country. The CESTAC will establish linkages amongst potential donors and relevant stakeholders / private investors for the future projects relevant to climate change and environmentally sustainable transport modes and other alternate projects on public private partnership (PPP) basis in the country.
