Dear Friends and Benefactors,
Welcome to this year’s edition of The Provincial Development Office’s Annual
Newsletter and Honor Roll of Donors. We hope you enjoy browsing through the
pages, catching up on our activities and those of the Brothers over the past year.
This year the Marist Brothers are celebrating 190 years since that momentous day when
St. Marcellin Champagnat founded the Order. The world is a much different place
today, but the mission and values upon which St. Marcellin founded the Order remain
the same. The Brothers today continue to bring quality, Christian education to the
youth of our country, we continue to provide quality care for our elderly and disabled
Brothers and we continue to expand our outreach to all those in need. St. Marcellin
would be proud.

In honor of our first 190 years, ”Sharing the Legacy“ was the theme of our very successful Annual Fund this past
year. Your prayerful and financial support of our works and ministries is what keeps the legacy of St. Marcellin
strong. It is what sustains us in our work with young people; it’s what enables our poorest students to participate in
programs that help strengthen their moral and spiritual character; it’s what makes that little difference in allowing
an elderly Brother to maintain his dignity during his senior years. It is everything St. Marcellin would be doing if
he were here among us in 2008.
In keeping with our tradition, we proudly include our annual Honor Roll of Donors. This is a compilation of all
donors who have so generously supported the Brothers over the course of our last fiscal year. Each year the list
continues to grow. It is encouraging to note that in this year we have also experienced the largest number of new
members to our Marcellin Guild (see page 3). We are blessed to have all of you ”Sharing the Legacy“ of the Marist
Brothers with us.
We trust you and your family are having a safe and refreshing summer season. Please know that you and your
loved ones are remembered in the daily prayers of all your Marist Brothers.

Trusts in Your Financial Planning
In your will you can – and probably should – create a trust for
your beneficiaries. The trust you create within your will need
not be complex. You simply direct, as part of your will, that
certain property be transferred to a trustee, to be held and managed by the trustee for the benefit of the persons or institutions
you name.
Many of our friends have found that a well-planned trust will
not “tie up” their property, will not be interpreted as a lack of
confidence in their beneficiaries and will not be a burdensome
expense. Indeed, you may find that a trust in your will is the
best method of providing financial security for your family and
other beneficiaries.
A husband, for example, may name a trustee of his own choosing
to invest the trust property and to handle all the other burdens
of property ownership. He will also make specific provisions for
the future enjoyment of the property. “Pay all the income to my
wife for her life” may be one direction given to the trustee. “Pay
my wife as much principal as she needs for her customary support” may be an additional direction. The trustee may also be
directed to divide whatever property remains at the wife’s death
equally among his children, or the husband may direct that the
final distribution be made to the children in such proportions as
his wife may direct in her will. Such a trust, known variously as
a “family trust” or “credit shelter trust,” also can save federal
estate taxes at the wife’s death – all assets in the trust will bypass
the tax collector.
The practical advantages of a trust are obvious. The trustee
will take care of all investments and management, give the
beneficiaries periodic reports, even attend to the personal
finances of the beneficiaries in times of illness or disability.
The beneficiaries can have all the advantages and rewards of
property ownership without the burdens and frustrations.

Points To Consider In Establishing A Trust
In deciding whether a trust makes sense in your estate planning, consider these additional points:
• Trusts are highly flexible. You can tailor your trust to meet your own goals and the specific needs of your beneficiaries.
• You name a trustee of your own choosing and you define the powers and duties of the trustee.
• You direct exactly how the income will be distributed…when it is to be paid, to whom it is to be paid and under what
circumstances changes can be made.
• You define the circumstances under which all or part of the principal can be paid out to a beneficiary.
• You direct how long the trust will last – for the life of one beneficiary or the lives of several beneficiaries, or until your
children reach a certain age.
• You direct how the trust property is to be eventually distributed or you can permit someone else to determine the
ultimate beneficiaries.

New LaValla League Members
In 2001 the Annual Fund reached a milestone, its 10th anniversary. In a spirit of
gratitude and recognition, we inaugurated the LaValla League for our friends who
had contributed to each of our first ten Annual Funds.
We chose the name "LaValla," for LaValla was the name of the town in southern
France where the Marist Brothers began in 1817. "LaValla" embodies the sentiments
of allegiance and of beginnings.
Each year since then we recognize new members to the LaValla League, in appreciation of
their ten consecutive years of giving to the Marist Brothers Annual Fund appeal.
In gratitude for their kindness and generosity, each new member has received a
commemorative pewter medallion of St. Marcellin Champagnat encased in lucite.
This year we are proud to announce the addition of the following 49 new members, bringing
the new total of LaValla League members to 651. Congratulations!

Congratulations
to our 2008 Jubilarians!
They came from all over. From
Chicago, Illinois, Lawrence,
Massachusetts, General Santos
City, Philippines, Laredo and
Brownsville, Texas; from Esopus,
Poughkeepsie, the Bronx,
Brooklyn, Queens and Manhattan
of New York, and from New
Jersey. They came to the
Immaculate Conception Center in
Douglaston, New York to celebrate the Jubilee of 9 Marists
from the Province of the United
States and the Province of the
Philippines. The seniors (60
years of Marist life) outnumbered
their juniors (50 years) this year,
with Br. Luke Driscoll leading the
procession from his wheelchair
with 75 years as a Marist.

missions.
...to Br. Alfred George who traveled to a
record-breaking 28 parishes around the
country to speak at weekend Masses on
behalf of our Marist foreign missions.
Also speaking at parishes on behalf of our

O‘Riordan. Through their combined
efforts, almost $53,000 was raised to help
Marist missions in various countries

our Mission efforts with the dioceses and
parishes across the country.
We would also like to thank the students
of Archbishop Molloy High School,
Briarwood, New York for their generous
gift of $1,200 for our Marist Foreign
Missions, Central Catholic High School
in Lawrence, Massachusetts for their
generous gift of $3,481.71 for the
Sargodha Catholic High School in
Pakistan and Marist High School,
Chicago, Illinois for their generous gift
of $1,000 for the special mission works
of Br. Sean Sammon, Superior General

Mass was celebrated by all with long time
friend of the Jubilarians, Fr. Dermot
Brennan, presiding. Br. Roy George and
his students from Archbishop Molloy
High School, Briarwood, New York,
mastered the ceremonies assisted by
Br. Don Nugent beautifully singing and
directing the music. Kudos were liberally
sprinkled after Mass, then all family
members, friends, alumni and Brother
guests proceeded to a sparkling banquet
orchestrated by Ms. Doris Reischach,
Province Secretary.

Office is blessed with two fantastic
volunteers. Br. Oswald Ouellette
volunteers each day helping with our
mailings and shredding of documents.
At 93 years young, Br. Oz has no plans
of retiring from his duties.
Many companies sponsor Matching Gift Programs that amplify the impact of their
employees’ personal contributions without increasing the obligation of the individual
donor. Most participating companies will match employee or retiree gifts dollar for
dollar, and some will even double or triple match a gift.
Our other volunteer is Mrs. Mary Jo
Guyette. Mary Jo pitches in wherever
she is needed, from helping process mail
to writing prayer cards to running credit
card donations. Our office is grateful
for her time and most especially, for
her friendship!

The Marist Brothers
Dear Members of the Marist Family,
On behalf of all the Marist Brothers of the Province of the United States, I want to thank
you for your extraordinary generosity and support of our mission to young people throughout
the country. Your financial generosity and, most especially, your prayers make a significant
difference in the life of each Marist Brother in our Province. As a result, you have become
an essential part of our mission and of our Marist Family.
Br. John Klein, FMS
Over the course of the past school year there has been tremendous energy and new life
throughout the Province. I am delighted to let you know that our Novitiate, under the
leadership of Brother Robert Clark, will open in late August in Esopus, New York. We will
have one new novice and we are encouraged by the number of other young men who are in
conversation with our Vocation Director, Brother Michael Sheerin, about the possibility of a
vocation to the Marist Brothers. Clearly, we need new young men to listen to the call of Jesus
and Mary to follow in Marcellin Champagnat’s footsteps in order for us to accomplish our
mission. I want to urge you to continue your prayers for good vocations and, perhaps, to
encourage a young man, who you might know to consider becoming a Marist Brother.
Working together, I am convinced that we can be God’s instruments for breathing new life
into the Marist Brothers of the United States.
Over Memorial Day weekend nearly eighty students from our Marist schools in the United
States and from Marist schools in Canada and Mexico participated in our Marist Youth
Leadership Gathering in Esopus. Chosen from each of our schools, we hope that these young
people will become effective Christian leaders and a “leaven” among their peers.
This August a new Marist Young Adult Community will open in the Holy Rosary residence on
the Esopus property. This will provide several young men and women who have completed
college with the opportunity to form a Marist community that will have its focus on prayer,
service and retreat work in Esopus. You can access the Marist Young Adult webpage and learn
more about this exciting initiative by going to our province website, www.maristbr.com.
Our senior Brothers are also continually grateful for your support. They remain committed to
the Marist mission to make Jesus known and loved to young people, especially the most neglected, through their prayers and their good example. Our Brothers at Champagnat Hall in the
Bronx have directly benefited from the significant physical improvements in the facility and in
the improved quality of care. One Brother recently told me that Champagnat Hall is the happiest, most prayerful, and kindest community that he has ever lived in. You have done a great
deal to make this reality possible and we are all grateful.
We look to the future with great hope and confidence that Jesus and Mary, our Good Mother,
will continue to bless us and, in particular, each of you. I promise that you and your families
will be in the prayers of each of the Brothers.

The Marist Brothers
First Gifts of the New Year
Annually, in January, the Marist Brothers
send each of our donors a personalized
statement with their gift history for the
previous calendar year. At that time, we
offer the opportunity to make a first gift
of the New Year to the Brothers. Almost
300 of our friends generously responded
and we thank you for this wonderful start
to 2008!
This past spring, 1,378 members of our
Marist Family responded to our need for
retirement assistance, contributing over
$102,000 to help care for our elderly and
disabled Brothers. The Marist Brothers
could not meet the cost of health care for
our senior men without your generosity
and support. We are most grateful to you
for helping us care for these men who
have dedicated their lives to educating
and mentoring young people.
The Annual Fund
”Sharing the Legacy”
The theme for the 2007 - 2008 Annual
Fund was ”Sharing the Legacy” in honor of
the 190th anniversary of the founding of
the Marist Brothers. The Annual Fund
remains the Development Office’s largest
single source of support for the Brothers.
This year, 1,877 of our friends and alumni
contributed over $310,000 to this year’s
campaign – our best year ever! Together,
we will continue to share the legacy of the
Marist Brothers for many more years to
come. Our sincerest thanks once again to
all those who generously supported the
Annual Fund.
Sustaining Support
Many of our donors regularly contribute
throughout the year to a number of
ongoing Marist ministries. This year 1,133
of our friends sent gifts in support of our
diverse needs and ministries, including our
Marist Foreign Missions and our
Remembrance in Prayer Program, as well
as the general and retirement needs of our

The Marist Brothers offer two different series of Prayer
Cards. We have updated our signature card featuring
the image of Christ and introduced a new Candle and
Cross design. The traditional cards may be used as
memorials to remember the deceased. Our two new
all occasion cards may be sent in honor of a birthday,
wedding, anniversary or to send get-well greetings.
All cards carry a special promise of Remembrance in
Prayer from the Marist Brothers.
