Topped by the flame of knowledge, the University mace has the University seal as a focal point and unifying element. Tassels of maroon and white hang from the shaft offourteen rods of black walnut, symbolizing the fourteen counties of the Commonwealth. The head of the mace is gold plate over highly polished brass. Complex curves radiating from the hub in which the seal is centered reflect light in constantly changing patterns, symbolic of the many-faceted environment of the university life. Academic Costume and Regalia Academic regalia represent traditions which come downfrom the Middle Ages, when European universities were institutions of the church. At that time, robes icere a common form of dress, particularlyfor officials of church and state. The cut of the robe, its adornment, and the colors used comprised a specialized heraldry that conveyed the rank and station of the wearer. At the universities, both faculty and students were considered to be part of the church hierarchy and were expected to wear the prescribed gowns. As society moved touard more modem forms of dress, only royalty, clergy, judges, and academics retained the traditional regalia, reserving it only for ceremonial use. 1lIIodern academic regalia retain some of the symbols of the earlier forms of ceremonial dress. The goicn. tends to be fullest, longest, and heaviest for the doctoral degree. The sleeves for the bachelor's and master's gowns are typically open at the wrist. Cuffs are more common on the doctoral gown, and its sleeves are adomed by three velvet strips, symbolic of the degree. The mantle worn about the shoulders, called the hood, is the remnant of'functional headgear worn for warmth in the unheated classrooms of medieval universities. Today its colors refer to the school that granted the degree and the level or discipline of the degree (e.g., navy bluefor Ph.D., pinkfor music). The usual colorfor academic gowns in the United States is black. However; almost three dozen universities in this country and many others throughout the world have adopted more colorful robes. In general, this practice has been limited to schools more than one hundred years old. Among the schools represented by colorful robes at commencement ceremonies are Boston College, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard; New York, Oxford, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Tufts, and Yale Universities, and the Universities of California, Kansas, and Rhode Island. Please note: The audience is asked to remain seated throughout this ceremony. At the end of the program, those attending the diploma-presentation ceremony for College of Arts and Sciences and McCormack Institute graduates should continue to remain seated. Diploma presentations for graduates of the College of Management, the College of Nursing, the College of Public and Community Service, and the Graduate College of Education will take place at other locations in the Bayside Exposition Center, which will be announced by the Provost at the close of this ceremony: YIusicfor the processional and recessional is provided by the University Brass Ensemble. The flags of various nations on display at this ceremony are a gift of the class of 1987. This program booklet is for ceremonial purposes. The official list ofgraduates is maintained by the university registrar. , University of Massachusetts Boston COllllllencelllent 1 9 9 8 Saturday, May 30 at 11:00 am Bayside Exposition Center Boston, Massachusetts The Program Sherry H. Penney, Chancellor Recessional 3 Reverend Avery Dulles, S.]. Doctor ofLaws Reverend Avery Dulles, S.]., an internationally known theologian, author; and lecturer, is Laurence J. McGinley Professor of Religion and Society at Fordham University, a position he has held since 1988. He has served on the faculties of Woodstock College (1960-74) and the Catholic University of America (1974-88) and has been a visiting professor at many institutions, among them the Gregorian University (Rome), Campion Hall (Oxford University), Boston College, Notre Dame, Yale, Princeton Theological Seminary, Union Theological Seminary, Lutheran Theological Seminary, Episcopal Seminary, and Weston School of Theology. Father Dulles graduated from Harvard College in 1940, attended Harvard Law School before serving in the United States Navy, and upon his discharge entered the Jesuit Order, receiving his doctorate in sacred theology in 1960 from the Gregorian University. He is the author of over 500 articles and nineteen books, including A Testimonial to Grace (republished in a fiftieth anniversary edition in 1996) and The Priestly Office (1997). He is a past president of both the Catholic Theological Society of America and the American Theological Society, and has served on the International Theological Commission. Among his numerous honors are the Croix de Guerre and the Cardinal Spellman Award for distinguished achievement in theology. Throughout his career, with the greatest understanding, clarity of thought, intellectual honesty, and generosity, Father Dulles has pursued ecumenical dialogue while eschewing relativism. His numerous ecumenical activities have included positions on the Advisory Editorial Board for Ecumenism, Concilium (1963-92), the Academic Council of the Irish School of Ecumenics (1971-78), United States Lutheran-Roman Catholic Dialogue (1972-92), and the Advisory Editorial Board of Mid-Stream: An EcumenicalJournal (1974- ). One aspect of Father Dulles's work especially echoes the life of the public university: In a contentious world, he has maintained both his allegiance to fundamental values and his respect for diversity of opinion. It is particularly for this steadfast commitment that we honor him today. Teresa Heinz Doctor of Laws Teresa Heinz has spent the last four years as chair of the Howard Heinz Foundation, distributing $170 million to institutions and agencies dedicated to improving our quality of life. Mrs. Heinz grew up in Mozambique, the daughter of a Portuguese doctor who took her on his rounds through the African bush. She graduated from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa with a degree in romance languages and literature. Fluent in five languages, she completed graduate work in Geneva which prepared her to be a linguist at the United Nations. Concerning her philanthropy, she has stated, "The Heinz Endowments do not support causes-we support ideas." And these carefully considered projects have won her a place in Utne Reader's list of "100 visionaries who could change your life." Her collaborations include programs supporting the arts, public policy, technology, the environment, and education. Mrs. Heinz is globally recognized as an environmental leader who believes that the conflict between environmental and economic concerns can be overcome. Under her leadership, the Vira 1. Heinz Endowment has donated the largest single private gift ever made in environmental circles to the Heinz Center for Science, Economics, and the Environment. She is also vice chair of the Environmental Defense Fund and an advisory board member of the Earth Communication Office. Her additional interests range widely. She is, for example, a co-founder of the National Council for Families and Television, a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, a member of the board of the Museum of Modem Art, and a vigorous advocate for the rights of women and the elderly. The philanthropic efforts of Theresa Heinz are informed by her remarkable gift for making connections and stimulating collaboration-across race, class, political parties, professions, and countries. We particularly recognize her for her achievements as a bridge-builder. Her life and work are imbued with the experience and appreciation of diversity, an appreciation anchored in human understanding. Donald H. Henley Doctor of Laws Environmentalist, musician, and philanthropist, Don Henley is remarkable for the number of environmental organizations in which he is active, the millions of dollars in financial support he has brought to them, and the exceptional quality of the work they have undertaken with his help. Mr. Henley grew up in the small town of Linden, Texas. A singer, songwriter, and drummer, he has established himself as one of rock music's unique and telling voices. In the 1970s, he founded the Eagles, the most successful band of that decade. Over 100 million Eagles recordings have been sold worldwide, and both the Eagles as a group and Mr. Henley as a soloist have won numerous Grammies and other music awards. Among the many environmental and human rights projects in which Mr. Henley has been deeply involved are the Rainforest Foundation, the Native American Rights Fund, and Americans for a Safe Future. His Walden Woods Project is of particular interest to Massachusetts residents. He is its founder and chairman, active on a day-to-day basis in management and fundraising. Largely due to his efforts, over $17 million has been raised since the inception of the project in 1990. The funds have been used to protect nearly 100 acres of historic Walden Woods, and to establish the Thoreau Institute, a world-class research center, library, and archives near Walden Pond. Three substantial Thoreau collections, including the world's largest, are now in process of being committed to the Institute, which plans an active program of support for visiting scholars and outreach for elementary and secondary school students and teachers. We take pride in honoring Don Henley today. Through his generosity and stirring commitment to environmental causes, and through the unfailing initiative and persistence he has brought to his work, he has transformed his personal successes, both artistic and financial, into achievements of universal importance. Carl Lewis Doctor of Laws Frederick Carlton (Carl) Lewis-one of the greatest track and field athletes of all time-was born in Birmingham, Alabama, grew up in Willingboro, New Jersey, and received his college education at the University of Houston. He is the holder of nine gold medals from four Olympiads, an eight-time gold medalist at the World Track and Field Championships, and a world-record-breaker in four events. The nine Olympic gold medals tie him with Paavo Nurmi of Finland and Larisa Latnina of the Soviet Union for the most won by anyone in Olympic competition. Mr. Lewis has received many national awards throughout his career; among them the AAU's 1981 Sullivan Award for the year's top amateur athlete, the Associated Press Male Athlete of the Year Award in 1984, Track and Field News World Athlete of the Decade Award for the 1980s, and the 1991 Jesse Owens Award. Lewis initially catapulted to fame in the 1984 Olympics as a result of winning the gold medal in the same four events-the lOa-meter dash, the long jump, the 200-meter run, and the 4 x lOa-meter relay-in which Jesse Owens had triumphed at the Berlin Games in 1936. In 1996, at the age of 35, he became the first male track-and-field athlete to make five United States Olympic teams. With his victory in the long jump, he then become the oldest male Olympic medalist in any speed-related event ever. The remarkable longevity of Mr. Lewis's career points to a determination in training and a capacity to be at psychological peak time after time, year after year; that few athletes attain. His charitable work has enriched many young lives. His incisive and insightful public commentaries on his sport have made him a positive force in athletic policy at home and abroad. In honoring Carl Lewis, we honor an exceptional athlete who has also become an exceptional world citizen. 5 David McCullough Doctor of Laws David McCullough has been called a master of the art of narrative history: His work has been praised for its exceptional narrative drive, its scholarship and insight into American life, and its literary distinction. His books include The Johnstown Flood, The Great Bridge, The Path between the Seas, Mornings on Horseback, Brave Companions, and the monumental Truman. He is twice winner of the National Book Award and of the prestigious Francis Parkman Prize. For Truman he received the Pulitzer Prize. Mr. McCullough has also been an editor; essayist, teacher, lecturer, and familiar presence on public television, as host of "The American Experience" and narrator of numerous documentaries. A gifted speaker, he has lectured in all parts of the country and abroad, as well as the White House, as part of the White House presidential lecture series. He is also one of the few private citizens to be asked to speak before a joint session of Congress. He is president of the Society of American Historians and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. For his work overall he has been honored by the National Book Foundation Distinguished Contribution to American Letters Award, the Charles Frankel Prize given by the National Endowment for the Humanities, the St. Louis Literary Award, and the New York Public Library's Literary' Lion Award. Born in Pittsburgh in 1933, Mr. McCullough was educated there and at Yale, where he was graduated with honors in English literature. He lives in West Tisbury, Massachusetts, with his wife Rosalee Barnes McCullough. He is currently at work on a book about the intertwining lives of John and Abigail Adams and Thomas Jefferson. We honor David McCullough for an exemplary career-and even more for an exemplary art, in which deep scholarship, consummate skill, and humane wisdom combine to instruct and inspire us all. Raul Yzaguirre Doctor of Laws Raul Yzaguirre is president of the National Council of La Raza (NCLR), which he joined in 1974. NCLR, the largest constituency-based national Hispanic organization, has been characterized by Hispanic Business magazine as "by all accounts the most effective Hispanic organization" in Washington, D.c., and by the Albuquerque Tribune as "the leading Hispanic think tank in the country." Mr. Yzaguirre was born in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. After graduating from high school, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps and then in 1964 founded NOMAS, the National Organization for Mexican American Services. He received his B.S. from George Washington University in 1966 and became a program analyst at the U.S. Office of Economic Opportunity. In 1969, he founded Interstate Research Associates, the first Mexican American research association. which he built into a multi-million-dollar nonprofit consulting firm. He is immediate past chairperson of the Independent Sector; a nonprofit coalition of over 850 corporate, foundation, and voluntary organizations. He was the first Hispanic to serve on the Executive Committee of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights. Currently he is chairperson of President Clinton's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanic Americans. He was recently elected a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, and he comments frequently on Latino issues for national TV and radio. Among his numerous awards are a Rockefeller Public Service Award from Princeton, the Order of the Aztec Eagle (the highest honor given by the government of Mexico to non-citizens), and the Martin Luther King, Jr., Medallion, given for his contributions to civil and human rights. We recognize Mr. Yzaguirre for a career of national and international leadership that demonstrates that great challenges can be met with courage, energy, conviction, and a determination to strengthen ties among the various peoples that form our country and its neighbors. 6 Recipients ofAwards for Graduate Students Charles A.
