The University Mace
Symbols of authority and power, maces were originally hand weapons
designed for use against armor. Topped by the flame of knowledge, the
University mace has the University seal as a focal point and unifying
element. Tassels of maroon and white hang from the shaft offourteen rods
of black walnut, symbolizing the fourteen counties of the Commonwealth.
The head of the mace is gold plate over highly polished brass. Complex
curves radiating from the hub in which the seal is centered reflect light in
constantly changing patterns, symbolic of the many-faceted environment of
the university life.
Academic Costume and Regalia
Academic regalia represent traditions which come down from the Middle
ilges, when European universities were institutions of the church. At that
time, robes were a common form of dress, particularly for officials of church
and state. The cut of the robe, its adornment, and the colors used comprised
a specialized heraldry that conveyed the rank and station of the wearer. At
the universities, both faculty and students were considered to be part of the
church hierarchy and were expected to wear the prescribed gowns. ~4s
society moved toward more modern forms of dress, only royalty, clergy,
judges, and academics retained the traditional regalia, reserving it only for
ceremonial use.
Modern academic regalia retain some of the symbols of the earlier forms of
ceremonial dress. The gown tends to be fullest, longest, and heaviest for the
doctoral degree. The sleeves for the bachelor's and master's gowns are
typically open at the wrist. Cuffs are more common on the doctoral gown,
and its sleeves are adorned by three velvet strips, symbolic of the degree.
The mantle worn about the shoulders, called the hood, is the remnant of
functional headgear worn for warmth in the unheated classrooms of
medieval universities. Today its colors refer to the school that granted the
degree and the level or discipline of the degree (e.g., navy bluefor Ph.D.,
pink for music).
The usual color for academic gmcns in the United States is black. However,
almost three dozen universities in this country and many others throughout
the world have adopted more colorful robes. In general, this practice has
been limited to schools more than one hundred years old. Among the schools
represented by colorful robes at commencement ceremonies are Boston
College, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, New York,
Oxford, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Tufts, and Yale Universities, and the
Universities o.fCalifornia, Kansas, and Rhode Island.

The audience is asked to remain seated throughout this ceremony. At the end
of the program, those attending the diploma-presentation ceremony for
College of Arts and Sciences graduates should continue to remain seated.
Diploma presentations for graduates of the College of Management, the
College of Nursing, the College of Public and Community Service, the
Graduate College of Education, and the McCormack Institute will take place
at other locations in the Bayside Exposition Center, which will be announced
by the college deans at the close of this ceremony.
The music prelude for the program is performed by World One. Music for
the processional and recessional is provided by the University Brass
Ensemble. The flags of various nations on display at this ceremony are a gift
of the class of 1987.

Harry Belafonte
Doctor of Laws
Harry Helafonte, born in Harlem, spent his childbood and adolescence there
and in Jamaica, his mother's birthplace. He served in the United States Navy
receiving an honorable discharge. Subsequently he studied at the Dramatic '
Workshop of the School of Social Research, and embarked on a legendary
career in the performing arts.
Mr. Belafonte has said that his artistic, social, and political interests are
inseparable. As proof, one might ask what the following people have in common:
Nelson Mundela , Martin Luther King, Jr., Eleanor Roosevelt, Audrey Hepburn.
Marlon Brando , Sidney Poitier, Dorothy Dandridge, Robert Altman, Charlie .
Parker, Lester Young, Duke Ellington, Richard Pryor, Moms Mabley, Pete
Seeger, Woody Guthrie. The answer is that each of them has had some
connection with Harry Belafonte's life and work.
Embarking on a career in theater amid the artistic ferment of post-war New
York City, Mr. Belafonte also performed as a singer, first in jazz and then as the
creator of a unique sound in folk music. In 1955, his Calypso became the first
record album ever to sell more than a million copies. He has been an actor and
producer in films and television. And he has remained over nearly a halfcentury deeply committed to the cause of civil rights, having played a crucial
early role in mobilizing cultural forces to support the movement, and never
flagging in his activism. He has long been involved with the ultimately successful
campaign against apartheid in South Africa, and with the United Nations. His
art and his political and humanitarian work have been recognized and honored
around the world.
In honoring Harry Belafonte , we pay tribute to a personal achievement which
no words describe better than his own. "My songs reflect the human condition,"
he has written. "The role of art isn't just to show life as it is, but to show life as
it should be."
Alan J. Brightman
Doctor of Science
Born in Cambridge and raised in Nantasket, Alan Brightman received his B.A.
degree from Amherst College (1969), and earned his M.Ed. (1971) and his Ph.D.
in education (1975) from Harvard University.
Early in his career, he began creating tools and strategies to help severely
developmentally delayed children adjust to life outside of institutions. Since that
time, he has effectively advocated for fuller participation for people with
disabilities in all aspects of society.
A visionary leader who has pioneered adaptive computer technology for the
benefit of the disabled and abled alike, Mr. Brightman has directed Apple
Computer's Worldwide Solutions Group since 1985. Through his influence,
Apple Computer was convinced to put computing access for people with
disabilities at the forefront of company decisions. As a result, Apple has led the
way in the development of computer adaptation for users with disabilities.
In 1989, he was once again at the forefront of his field, supporting the
establishment of the Alliance for Technology Access, a group which supports
and coordinates the work of a coalition of organizations dedicated to ensuring
access to people with disabilities.
Alan Brightman is the author of numerous books and articles, including
Independence Day: Designing Computer Solutions for Individuals with
Disability. His one-person photographic exhibit, produced for the International
Year of the Disabled, toured the United States for two years, and he produced
the award-winning children's television series Feeling Free for public television.
He lends his services to many charitable organizations. Since 1975, he has been
the executive director of Educational Projects, Inc., which makes annual grants
to innovative human services programs.
In honoring Alan Brightman, we recognize his lifelong dedication to changing
the experience of being disabled, and we pay tribute to his stature as an
international pioneer in adaptive computing and technology for the disabled.

Lawrence S. DiCara
Doctor of Laws
Lawrence DiCara is a native of Dorchester who graduated from Boston Latin
School in 1967 and Harvard College in 1971. He received a J.D. from Suffolk
Law School in 1976 and an M.P.A. from the John F. Kennedy School at
Harvard in 1977.
Mr. DiCara was elected to the Boston City Council in 1971, and elected city
council president in 1978. In both cases, he was the youngest person ever to be
so chosen. He played a crucial role, during his City Council years, in such
development projects as Quincy Market, Copley Place, and UMass Boston's
Harbor Campus. Since 1981 he has been an attorney in private practice, specializing in real estate and administrative law. He is currently a partner at the
Boston-based firm of Peabody & Brown.
For over twenty-five years Mr. DiCara has been energetically engaged in civic
activities. Currently, he is an overseer of the New England Medical Center; a
director of the Robert F. Kennedy Action Corps; a member of the Audit
Committee of the City of Boston: and a trustee of the Boston Plan for Excellence
in the Public Schools and the Franklin Foundation. For thirty years, he has
taught in the Massachusetts Boys' State Program. He frequently lectures on
public policy at colleges and universities, including UMass Boston. In 1987, he
was named a trustee of the University of Massachusetts by Governor Dukakis;
he was reappointed some years later by Governor Weld. While on the Board, he
served on all major committees, ineluding the search committees for the
chancellorships at the Boston and Dartmouth campuses.
In honoring Lawrence S. DiCara, we recognize a friend of the University-and
of the community to which the University belongs-whose career exemplifies
public service of the highest order: informed, wide-ranging, committed, and
splendidly effective.
Rosabeth Moss Kanter
Doctor of Laws
Rosabeth Moss Kanter received a bachelor of arts degree in sociology magna
cum laude from Bryn Mawr College in 1964, and a master of arts degree (1965)
and a Ph.D. (1967) in sociology from the University of Michigan.
Since 1986 she has held the Class of 1960 Chair as Professor of Business
Administration at the Harvard University Graduate School of Business
Administration. Her academic career has included faculty appointments at
Brandeis and Harvard Universities (1967-77) and at Yale University (1977-86).
She has also been a Fellow in Law and Social Sciences and a Visiting Scholar at
Harvard Law School, and served as editor of the Harvard Business Review
from 1989 to 1992.
Rosabeth Moss Kanter is the author of When Giants Learn to Dance: Mastering
the Challenges of Strategy, Management and Careers in the 1990s (1989), which
has been translated into ten languages, and which received the Johnson, Smith
& Knisely Award for New Perspectives on Executive Leadership. She has published in total more than 150 articles and twelve books. Her latest book, World
Class: Thriving Locally in the Global Economy (1995), deals with the concept of
"collaborative advantage" in the new world economy.
She has received numerous national honors, including a Guggenheim Fellowship
and several "Woman of the Year" awards. Her work as a consultant to major
corporations has taken her all over the world, and she has been featured in
American and British television documentaries on management and leadership
for change. She currently serves on the Massachusetts Governors Council on
Economic Growth and Technology.
In recognizing Rosabeth Moss Kanter, we honor a scholar and teacher whose
analysis of people in organizations has illuminated the process of change and the
possibilities for human beings acting within groups, and we recognize a leader
who has brought the university to the business community in ways that have
energized both.

Ruth Schachter Morgenthau
Doctor of Laws
Born in Vienna as Europe moved towards the destruction brought by World
War II, Ruth Schachter Morgenthau emigrated to the United States as a young
girl with her family in 1940. She graduated with a B.A. degree from Barnard
College (1952) before travelling to Paris as a Fulbright Scholar to study
international relations. She earned her D. Phil. degree from Nuffield College,
Oxford University in 1953.
As the Adlai E. Stevenson Professor of International Politics at Brandeis
University, Ruth Schachter Morgenthau has devoted much of her attention to
issues of equity between developed and developing nations. As Director of the
International Liaison Committee for Food Corps Programs, an organization
which she founded, she has led efforts to help undeveloped countries become
more self-sufficient in food production. With support from the Ford and
Rockefeller Foundations, and the Canadian and Dutch governments, the Food
Corps Program has advanced self-reliance in many countries by providing
research, training, and low-cost technology.
She was instrumental in establishing Brandeis University's Master's Program in
Sustainable International Development; she is an Associate in Brown
University's World Hunger Program; and she has taught at Boston University,
lectured at the University of Ghana, and been a research fellow at Harvard
University's Center for International Affairs.
She is a noted author and consultant, and her work in the area of international
politics has spanned decades and continents. She has been an advisor to three
U.S. presidents on politics in the developing world; a member of the U.S.
delegation to the United Nations; a representative to the U.N. Social
Development Commission; and a consultant to the World Bank on Africa.
For her academic distinction and humanitarian leadership, for service to the
world's powerful leaders and its most vulnerable citizens, we honor Ruth
Schachter Morgenthau.
Jessye Norman
Doctor of Fine Arts
The renowned singer .lessye Norman, whose voice has been characterized as "a
catalogue of all that is virtuous in singing," grew up in Augusta, Georgia, and
studied at Howard University, the University of Michigan, and the Peabody
Conservatory of Music.
Miss Norman sings a widely varied operatic repertoire, having appeared at La
Scala, the Teatro Comunale, the Royal Opera House, the Stuttgart Opera, the
Vienna and Hamburg State Operas, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Salzburg
Festival, and the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Her many televised
appearances include the spectacular celebration of the 200th anniversary of the
French Revolution in July 1939, where Miss Norman sang the Marseillaise. Her
numerous recordings have won such awards as the Grand Prix National du
Disque for albums of lieder by Wagner, Schumann, Mahler, and Schubert; the
Gramophone Award for her interpretation of Strauss' "Four Last Songs"; and
Grammy Awards for "Songs of Maurice Ravel," Wagner's Lohengrin and Die
Walkiire, and Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. Other distinctions include the
French Legion d'Honneur and an honorary ambassadorship to the United
Nations.
In addition to her busy performance schedule, Miss Norman is actively involved
with non-profit organizations as diverse as Phoenix House, the Fresh Air Fund,
the Harlem School of the Arts, the Children's Defense Fund, and the Alvin Ailey
Dance Theater. Miss Norman serves on the National Advisory Board of the
Dance Theatre of Harlem, and on the Board of Directors for the Ms.
Foundation, the National Music Foundatiou, Citymeals-on-Wheels in New York
City, and the New York Botanical Garden. A relentless Girl Scout cookie seller,
she is a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts of America.
In honoring .lcssye Norman, we recognize the extraordinary achievements of an
engaged citizen whose unsurpassed artistry, remarkable for its range, depth,
and humanity, has delighted and moved millions of listeners around the world.
