The University Mace
Symbols of authority and power, maces were originally hand weapons
designed for use against armor. Topped by the flame of knowledge, the
University mace has the University seal as a focal point and unifying element.
Tassels of maroon and white hang from the shaft of fourteen rods of black
walnut, symbolizing the fourteen counties of the Commonwealth.
The head of the mace is gold plate over highly polished brass. Complex
curves radiating from the hub in which the seal is centered reflect light in
constantly changing patterns, symbolic of the many-faceted environment
of the university life.
Academic Costume and Regalia
The academic regalia worn by faculty and students at this ceremony represent traditions which come down from the Middle Ages, when European
universities were institutions of the church. At that time, robes were a
common form of dress, particularly for officials of church and state. The cut
of the robe, its adornment, and the colors used comprised a specialized heraldry that conveyed the rank and station of the wearer. At the universities,
both faculty and students were considered to be part of the church hierarchy
and were expected to wear the prescribed gowns. As society moved toward
more modern forms of dress, only royalty, clergy, judges, and academics
retained the traditional regalia, reserving it only for ceremonial use.
Modern academic regalia retain some of the symbols of the earlier forms of
ceremonial dress. The gown tends to be fullest, longest, and heaviest for the
doctoral degree. The sleeves for the bachelor's and master's gowns are typically open at the wrist. Cuffs are more common on the doctoral gown, and
its sleeves are adorned by three velvet strips, symbolic of the degree. The
mantle worn about the shoulders, called the hood, is the remnant of functional headgear worn for warmth in the unheated classrooms of medieval
universities. Today its colors refer to the school that granted the degree and
the level or discipline of the degree (e.g., navy blue for Ph.D., pink for music).
The usual color for academic gowns in the United States is black. However,
many universities in this country and many others throughout the world
have adopted more colorful robes. In general, this practice has been limited
to schools more than one hundred years old. Among the schools represented
by colorful robes at commencement ceremonies are Boston College, Boston
University, Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Duke, Harvard, New
York, Oxford, Princeton, Rutgers, Stanford, Tufts, and Yale Universities,
and the Universities of California, Kansas, and Rhode Island.
Diploma-Presentation
Ceremonies (Please Note!)
Diploma-presentation ceremonies for individual UMass Boston colleges will
be held after the main ceremony. Graduates from all but one of the colleges
will leave the main hall and move to other locations in the Expo Center,
followed by their families and friends. College of Arts and Sciences graduates and guests will stay behind. We ask all guests to remain at their seats
until the academic procession has left the main hall. For details, please see
the separate page that was distributed with this program.

Recipient of the
Chancellor's Medal for
Distinguished Service
Jarrett Barrios serves Massachusetts as the state senator for the Middlesex,
Suffolk, and Essex district. The son of a carpenter and a social worker, he came
to Cambridge at the age of 17 to study at Harvard. After graduating with high
honors, and working for the Boston City Council and in local campaigns, he
earned his law degree at Georgetown; he then returned to practice law at the
firm of Hill & Barlow, where he was named the "Pro Bono Lawyer of the
Year" in 1997. First elected in 1998 to the State House of Representatives,
he was elected to the State Senate in 2002.
Among his chief interests as a legislator are housing, childcare, education, and
access to healthcare. He has led successful efforts to create a state low income
housing tax credit-Massachusetts' first new affordable housing production
program in over a decade-and a state affordable housing trust. He has passed
legislation to require interpreter services in hospital emergency rooms, and to
improve benefits for widows of disabled veterans. He is currently sponsoring
legislation to protect consumers from unfair bank fees and lending practices,
raise the wages of human service workers, and lower the cost of prescription
drugs. He is also a founding member of the Latino American Caucus.
He serves as a member of the board of directors of Child Care Resource
Center, Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders, and On the Rise Homeless
Women's Center. Among the many acknowledgements of his legal work and
community activism are his recognition as one of "40 under 40," by Boston
Magazine and the Boston Business Journal and "Ten Outstanding Young
Leaders" by the Boston Jaycees, and his receipt of the Kennedy Library's Fenn
Award for Political Leadership.
We honor Jarrett Barrios for innovative, thoughtful, and skillful political leadership that continually seeks to nourish the diversity of our increasingly diverse
state as a rich source of strength and pride.

Chancellor's Medal for
Distinguished Service
Marian Wright Edelman, founder and president of the Children's Defense
Fund (CDF), has been an advocate for disadvantaged Americans for her entire
professional career. Under her leadership, CDF has become the nation's
strongest voice for children and families, describing its mission as "to Leave
No Child Behind" and to ensure every child a Healthy Start, a Head Start,
a Fair Start, a Safe Start, and a Moral Start in life with the support of caring
families and communities."
A graduate of Spelman College and Yale Law School, she began her career in
the mid-60s when, as the first black woman admitted to the Mississippi Bar,
she directed the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund office in Jackson,
Mississippi. In 1968, she moved to Washington, DC, as counsel for the Poor
People's March. She founded the Washington Research Project, a public interest
law firm and the parent body of the Children's Defense Fund. For two years
she directed the Center for Law and Education at Harvard. In 1973, she
began CDF.
She has served as a trustee of Spelman College and was the first woman
elected by alumni to the Yale University Corporation. She is currently a board
member of the Association to Benefit Children and Outward Bound, and a
member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of
Arts and Sciences, among other organizations. Among her awards are the
Albert Schweitzer Humanitarian Prize and a MacArthur Foundation Prize
Fellowship. In 2000, she received the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the
Robert F. Kennedy Lifetime Achievement Award for her writings, which include
seven books, among them Families in Peril: An Agenda for Social Change,
and, most recently, I'm Your Child, God: Prayers for Children.
We honor Marian Wright Edelman particularly for her visionary understanding
that those in danger of being "left behind" are necessary in our country-and
that among them are fellow citizens who may be uniquely capable of leading
us forward.

Cam Neely
Doctor of Laws
Cam Neely, a native of British Columbia, first played in the National Hockey
League as a member of the Vancouver Canucks. But on his 21st birthdayJune 6, 1986-the Canucks traded him to the Boston Bruins, and Bostonians
have regarded him as a fellow Bostonian ever since. Quickly establishing
himself as an outstanding scorer and checker, a fearless competitor, and a
leader of his team, he went on to compile one of the most remarkable records
in Bruins history.
In his first year he led the team in goals with 36, and for the first time scored
three in a game (he would do this another 13 times). In '87-'88, he reached the
40-goal plateau. In '88-'89 he led the team in total scoring with 37 goals and
38 assists. In '89-'90 he scored 55 goals, the most ever for a Bruins rightwinger, and again led the team in total scoring. '90-'91 saw him score 51 goals,
but an opponent's hit during the playoffs began the injury woes that would
plague him for the rest of his sadly shortened career. During the next two
seasons he played only 22 games. In '93-'94, however, he scored 50 goals for
the third time, and his repeated returns after severe injuries were recognized
when he was awarded the league's Masterton Trophy. But by mid-1996 a
degenerative hip condition had forced him into premature retirement.
Even before Cam Neely's retirement, he and his siblings, spurred by the loss of
their parents to cancer, had begun working to ease difficulties for families with
members suffering from this disease. Now the Cam Neely Foundation sponsors
the Neely House at New England Medical Center, where families can stay and
receive support during cancer treatments; and the Neely Cancer Fund, which is
pursuing every aspect of cancer care, treatment, and research.
We honor Cam Neely for his brilliance as an athlete, and even more for his
courage and resilience. We honor him as well for the depth and effectiveness
of his response to the human condition.

Muircheartaigh
Doctor of Laws
President Iognaid 6 Muircheartaigh of the National University of Ireland,
Galway, leads an institution now enrolling some 12,500 students, 2,300 of
whom are graduate students. "NLJI Galway was recently designated Irish
University of the Year by the Sunday Times of London. Another highlight of
the year will be the awarding of an honorary doctorate this June to Nelson
Mandela-an event particularly gratifying for NUl Galway, which has
developed a very active and prestigious human rights center.
Foremost in President 6 Muircheartaigh's vision for NUl Galway is its continuation as a student-centered institution. One of his main aims is to build a
new student sports center for the university, which he hopes will rank among
the best of its kind; work on the design and funding of this project is well
advanced. He himself has always had a keen interest in sports, and indeed has
won numerous Irish national titles, and served as captain of his country's team,
in track and field.
Iognaid 6 Muircheartaigh joined the NUl Galway faculty in 1970, maintaining
a stellar career as a teacher and researcher while growing increasingly involved
in university governance and administration. He was appointed deputy president and registrar in 1998, and president two years later. His discipline is
statistics, an area in which he received his PhD from Glasgow University in
Scotland, focusing on computer-aided medical diagnosis. He has published
over 70 research papers, applying statistics in such diverse fields as economics,
medicine, and oceanography; and he has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship
to Stanford University, and a U.S. National Academy of Sciences senior research
associateship at the US Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California.
We honor Iognaid 6 Muircheartaigh for exemplary leadership in higher
education-for blending first-rate scholarship with determination to enrich
the experiences of students at an exemplary university.

Christina E. DeVaughn, earned her BA in music at UMass Boston and her
master's degree in opera performance at the Boston Conservatory. She has been
a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions and a participant in the Chautauqua Young Artist Program. Among the groups with which
she has performed are the Boston Pops, the Boston Lyric Opera, the Cantata
Singers, the New England Spiritual Ensemble. the Plymouth Philharmonic, and
the Pioneer Valley Symphony and Chorus.

Music and Flags
Broadcast of Principal Address
Music for the processional and recessional is provided by the
University Brass Ensemble. The flags of various nations on display
at this ceremony all represent countries from which students have come
to UMass Boston. These flags are also regularly flown along the roadway leading to the UMass Boston campus. The original group of flags
was the gift of the class of 1987, and the university has continued to
maintain them. Since then, the flags of many more countries have been
added, all donated by students from those countries.
Today's principal address by Marian Wright Edelman will be recorded
and broadcast, together with comments by Chancellor [o Ann Cora,
on Sunday, June 1, at 7:30pm, on the university's radio station,
WUMB (91.9 PM, www.wumb.org).
