either text Colin on 07810 634856 or email [email protected]. The home of ‘the flag’ will be the small post box outside the
gents changing rooms at the club. So once your race is complete and you’ve sent in your information and photo to Colin, please
put ‘the flag’ back in the post box for the next person to take. Your photos and information will be sent on to Vinnie to go in the
newsletter.

Brenda Kinch – Athletics Norfolk Female Road Runner of the Year 2014
Most runners have not heard of this trophy, awarded by the Norfolk Athletics Committee and initiated in
1997 The annually presented cup is engraved with each years winner’s name along with a replica cup
to keep: there is also a similar male award.
The award is calculated on the results of the 4 County Championships –
5K, 10K, 10 Mile & Half Marathon. In addition the Postal Marathon is also included.
The runner MUST have run a minimum 3 of the 5 races and the results are then calculated on the World
Masters Athletics, Age Graded calculator. The best 3 results are taken and averaged, and the winner is
the individual with the highest age graded percentage.

Winter Tanners - 30 Miles – Vinnie Purdy
Start – near to Leather Leisure Centre 08:30am
As with all these LDWA events there are no markings and no marshals on route except at the 3 checkpoints. So armed with
five pages of standard issue LDWA instructions
Eg.
In 20Y TR on tarmac path thru treeline then TL along tarmac FP. When tarmac ends TR on XTK (FiPo HAWKS HILL). In
275Y ahd over railway & waterworks drive, & cont ahd across grassy area (shortcutting BW). Join TK from L & swing R
uphill. At top of field FL & keep ahd to go thru gap in hedge & TL on BW).
Along with a couple of pieces of my mums homemade flapjack and a bottle of generic supermarket isotonic drink, i headed
out onto 30 miles of Surrey hills. I soon caught up with Dave and Chrissy who i had grabbed a lift down with earlier that
morning, before they left me at the start while i was doing up my shoe laces. A few words about how nice the weather was,
and i decided to push on. I had come with the idea in my head to take some pictures, and I even put some change In my
pocket with good intensions of climbing Leith Tower half way round (these events don't have to be taken to serious).
However I soon realised I was feeling good and quickly changed my mind, deciding to give it everything. It didn’t seem to
take to long before I was on the North Downs Way heading up over Denbies Vineyard overlooking Dorking. As I reached the
top of the climb, the lady walk/jogging in front of me saw me approaching and hurried to the gate in front to get through
before me, but unfortunately the gate didn't open as far as she thought, and she kept moving forward and banged into it with
her head, this was in no way funny, and I did not laugh. We dropped down of the NDW and reached the delightful Milton
Street.
CP1 – Chadhurst Farm 7.9m 09:37am (Fruit Shortie/Fig Roll/Jaffa Cake)
At the checkpoint I met fellow husband and wife beach runners Carmine and
Jenny and photo bombed their mile 8 smiles for miles picture (where they
were trying to take a happy picture ever mile) I left them and followed the
route to Leith Hill (965ft), the highest point in the southeast of England.
Crowned with Leith Hill Tower where it is possible to see some thirteen
counties on a very clear day, I was blessed with stunning blue skies and
sunshine, yet still regrettably resisted the climb up the tower. The ground
under foot had had the odd patch of frost, but was predominately mud, yet
when I reached Holmbury Farm, this changed to ridicules amounts of mud,
and a one point i had to hang onto a wooden fence as I pulled myself
through it. It seemed the best way out of the mud was to head up another
hill so it was a near vertical Climb on hands and knees to pitch Hill trig
point (257m) and the founder memorial toposcope.
CP2 Pitch Hill FRIENDS OF THE HURTWOOD CAR PARK 17m 11:14am (two finger Kit Kat/Jaffa Cake/Fruit Shortie)
Up until now I had managed to stick to the route description without getting lost, then I got this lot
Leave car park by car exit, cross RD & up drive. In 5Y FR thru wooden posts & up wide track. Ignore LT & swing L with path
up to 4way path junc at top. TR (10º) on narrow path & in 20Y join path from L. In 110Y ignore RF & in 65Y FL & 90Y later
FL again. Ahd to RD. (17.4M)
I read it over and over again until it became even more of a blur, then I just took the path which I thought looked the most
used. After a couple if minuets I turned round and headed back, eventually I found a couple of other runners (who ended up
coming joint first) so I tagged on with them for a couple of miles, and to pass the time we played ultra marathon top trumps,
with us all comparing races we had completed and times. We soon past the Abinger Hammer Clock with "Jack the
Blacksmith", who strikes the hour with his hammer. The clock bears the motto "By me you know how fast to go", to be honest
I was going to get much quicker, whatever he did with that hammer. Not long past Abinger we came upon the Wilberforce
monument "Soapy Sam" was a Bishop of Oxford, he was also son of the more famous William Wilberforce the slavery
reformer. The monument marks the spot he was fatally thrown from his horse at, from here we rejoined the North Downs
Way and headed up to Steers Filed
Cp3 – Steers Hill 25.7m 13:00pm (Cup of tea with Milk 2 sugars/two Ritz biscuits/Jaffa cake/Two Jelly Babies)
I left the checkpoint and headed downhill past the Tanners hatch youth hostel (hence the marathons name) to join the
outbound route to return the leatherhead. A total time 05:19th and 3455ft of climb and lots of mud , this being my 6th winter
tanners and by far the quickest with a PB of 13 mins, and a fourth place finish out of the 200 starters (8 retired) and in my
view the hilliest for a few years, and possibly the sloppiest.
Finish - near to Leather Leisure Centre 30.4m 13:49pm
Don’t forget the next Club meeting is the 5th March
Further meetings will be on April 2nd (AGM), May 5th, July 2nd, Sept 1st, Nov 5th

2006
I started running In 1996 which was mostly messing around and treadmill
running with my first official race being Wymondham 10mile in 2001(?) in
around 69mins. I mainly enjoyed cycling pre Beach Runners completing a
number of 100mile rides. I spent most of my time cycling, playing squash
and playing golf. In 2003 and in 2005 I ran the London marathon (it was
easy to get in back in those days!) I'll call them route rekey for future
attempts.
I joined the Beach Runners in 2006 after some encouragement from Sally
Middleton. I remember the first session being a fartlek taken by Malcolm
which I thoroughly enjoyed and the rest is history!
As lots of runners do i have suffered many injuries over the years, mainly
due to incorrect/over training. Its taken a while but I now understand what
it takes to train sensibly and cross your fingers and hope for the best!
My short term objective is to run Bungay marathon simply to gain a good for age time and help focus my
training for future months as I tend to train better through the summer. I hope to complete the Peterborough half
marathon and gain another PB as I found the course suits me.
Current running shoe –
Adidas Adistar Boost (swear by them)
Favourite quote if you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always got.
Favourite route –
running on the coast during the summer months followed by a quick dip in the sea!
Favourite race –
Kielder Marathon (will return and have my vengeance!)

CLUB KIT
Can be ordered from Peter Eaton. Some of the kit
is held in stock, other items however have to be
ordered and sometimes have a minimum quantity
required to order them, and therefore there
may be a period of wait until enough members
request said items
For all kit enquiries including latest prices, please
contact
Peter Eaton on Telephone 01362 684134 or
[email protected]
