Yikes! Here it is coming up to the middle of July and I’ve barely had my car out. All those plans of
using it more this summer, where has the time gone? Or, maybe I should be asking where has the
summer gone? We had a hot day on the May long week end and another hot day on July long
week end, and in between a lot of crappy weather. Summer has to be more than just long week
ends.
I remiss, we were blessed with a nice day for the Presidential, and what a lovely day, great
location and great show we had. It was nice to see all the great cars come out. The day was a
fantastic success, thanks to the planning and work that went into it from our Special Event
Directors, Jim and Gary. As well we couldn’t pull off an event such as this without the help of
volunteers, and thanks every one for stepping up to the plate and helping out. Also thanks to Jim
Burgess for the great pancakes and sausages that gave us a good start on the day. At 153 cars
this was the most successful Presidential to date, plus we raised approximately $1000 for the
Calgary Woman’s Emergency Shelter. Nobody has asked for votes yet but my vote is in that we
retain this location for next year.
So here we are at the middle of July and my car is in the body shop, poor place to have your car
in July. For any one not in the know, my car sustained damage while the engine was being rebuilt.
The engine rebuilders have come around and their insurance is paying for the $2000 + damage
inflicted while they had my car in their shop. I have hardly let this car out of my sight, and indeed
was worried when it had to go to their shop. From now on; if I have to leave my car anywhere, I
will do a walk around with the shop personnel prior to leaving it. As a matter of fact I just did this
with the body shop where it currently resides. One would think that a car should not incur damage
while at a body shop, but that is what I thought when I left it at the rebuilders. The whole point of
my telling you this is just for advice, and to get you thinking before you leave your vehicle with any
one. Do that walk around with the shop owner.
This is my last opportunity via News Letter to remind all of the members about the International in
Saskatoon. At every International you can see the folks from Saskatoon having a lot of fun, they
are a good group and will put on a fabulous International show. I know that there will be the usual
core group of people going from here. I just want to say, don’t be afraid of getting into that group,
there is always room for more and you will enjoy yourself tremendously. I am sure else where in
this News Letter you will be able to find the information you need about this show.
For now get that car out and have fun

A senior citizen drove his brand new Shelby out of the dealership. Taking off down the road,
he floored it to 120km/h, enjoying the wind blowing through what little hair he had left.
"Amazing," he thought as he flew down the highway, pushing the pedal down even more.
Looking in his rear view mirror, he saw the patrol car behind him, blue and red lights flashing
and siren blaring. He floored it to 150km/h, then 180, then 200. Suddenly he thought, "What
am I doing? I'm too old for this," and pulled over to await the officer`s arrival.
Pulling in behind him, the RCMP officer walked up to the Shelby, looked at his watch and said,
"Sir, my shift ends in 30 minutes. Today is Friday. If you can give me a reason for speeding
that I've never heard before, I'll let you go.“
The old gentleman paused, then said, "Years ago, my wife ran off with a police officer. I
thought you were bringing her back.“
Have a good day, Sir," replied the cop with a broad grin.

Long time member and volunteer Ted Brailsford
can always be counted on to pitch in!
The Presidential S&S broke records
this year with 153 registered cars,
that’s 45 more cars than ever before!
THANKS TO AMAC’S VERY HARD WORKING VOLUNTEERS!
It takes some dedicated people to get all those cars registered and all those votes counted!
5
A big thank you to our Presidential
Trophy Sponsors - Advantage Ford.
Also a big thanks to The Mustang
Shop, Conroy Ross and many of our
members who donated prizes. Also
thanks to Neil Besler at Tac Mobility
for the use of the two way radios!
Stanley Park was an awesome venue and it was a perfect sunny day!

AMAC events for 2008 will be in
support of the Calgary Women’s
Emergency Shelter. Fund raising for
this wonderful agency will now be a
part of each of our events. This
means when you participate in a club
event part of your admission or
registration costs will go to the
Shelter. One more great reason to
participate in AMAC activities.
The Calgary Women's Emergency
Shelter is a nonprofit agency that
provides emergency shelter for
women
and
children
escaping
domestic violence. We also offer
support and prevention programs

If you’ve never taken a Sunday drive out to
Black Diamond – Marv’s Classic Soda Shop
is a good reason to hit the road. A visit to this
classic diner has you feeling like you’ve
stepped back in time. From the vinyl booths,
to the soda chairs lined up at the arborite
counter this place is way cool! They even
have an old fashioned Wurlitzer so you can
play your favorite oldie. If you happen to hit it
just right Marv himself may just pick up his
guitar and serenade the customers.

Our Monthly Cruise for June was a nice trip to Black Diamond for some Ice
Cream, Highway 22 is definitely one of the prettiest roads near Calgary.
The run was well attended with about 15 cars.
I’m ready – what are we waiting for?
The temperature could have
been a bit warmer, but the ice
cream was yummy!
Nice rear end Ryan!

Deer in the Headlights - If you have ever owned a Mustang you will be able relate to the following ramblings. I had
the Mustang out the weekend for a little cruise time. My baby was freshly washed, detailed and looking hot..
Smokin' hot!!
I’m stopped at an intersection waiting for the light to change and I glanced over to the car beside me. This poor guy
is looking at my car with a “deer in the headlights” look on his face. It is obvious this guy is no teenager and needs
to drive a Toyota Camry because of family commitments. But his dumfounded facial expression is so captivating I
can’t turn away. Being the nice guy I smiled back, revved the motor a wee bit and then peeled off down the road. As
I drove down the road my smile started grow bigger and bigger, chuckling started until I suddenly realized that was
me a few years back driving a minivan! Damn, life has a way of biting you in the ass just when you think you are on
top of your game!
My story of the “deer in the headlights” starts in late 2001. I was on route to Stampede Pontiac driving my late
brother’s minivan in for a service. So here I am driving this stunning but boring grey minivan down 9th Avenue SW
and I’m actually thinking about buying it. I tell myself that the mileage is low, the price is very reasonable and this
minivan could be a great family vehicle. Just as I’m having this momentary lapse of judgment I had to stop for the
light at the intersection of 9th Avenue and 11th Street SW (across from Metro Ford). As I’m waiting impatiently for
the light to change I look to my left side and see another “nothing car”. When I glance to the right however I see this
brand new red 2002 Mustang convertible. Sitting in the Mustang was some old grey haired guy, just like me and
many others in the club, and a much younger female passenger dressed to the nine’s. As I looked over at the car
and the lovely young lady I know that I had that same “deer in the headlights” expression on my face. I immediately
asked myself how could I possibly justify a minivan? Was I completely crazy? Was I just another old man?
Two day’s later I have sold the minivan to a nice young family man with too many kids and not enough money to
buy something cool. Within a month or two I had traded my 2000 Ford F150 in on a new silver 2002 Mustang GT. I
had gone without a Mustang for 4 years and promised myself that I would not make this mistake again!
Call it an ego boost or post acquisition validation but the idea of having someone drooling over your newest car is a
powerful non alcoholic buzz, and I admit I like the buzz. I maybe an old man physically but I’m trying to do
everything possible to rebel from the norm, so to speak. The good and or bad news is that driving a nice Mustang,
regardless of year, you do get a daily occurrence of “deer in the headlights”. I don’t think I will ever tire of that.. You
shouldn’t either..
Run for the Sun – Out with the old and in with the new - Our Run for the Sun weekend to Kelowna was a
success in many ways. The trip and the people who participated in the trip made for a great time. Many of this
year’s attendees were new to the club and did not know anyone else before the trip. However, by the end of the
weekend we all had a great time and we made some new friends. I would go on a road trip with each and every
one of them because they wanted the same things I did.. drive the Mustang and have a little fun along the way. I
will be posting some pictures on our website of the trip. Next year we are planning something a lot bigger.
Well, as many of you know, I’m always interested in selling my latest Mustang, assuming the price is right. The
short story is that the ’08 Cal Spec has been sold to a young motel owner in Revelstoke and he is driving it hard,
the way it was intended to be driven. Eric, the new owner, owns a small motel, the Swiss Chalet, at which we
stayed at during on our trip. When Eric drove the ’08 Cal Spec he was totally smitten. A week later I’m delivering
the Cal Spec to Revelstoke and my buddy Alby was kind enough to pick me up in Field BC.
Ok, so now the fun begins. I’m now on the hunt for another Mustang and I can smell the new car scent all over
again. A quick call to a Ford dealer in Arizona and in California turned up a few ’08 Roush 427R’s, Shelby GT’s
Cont’d…
10
and a couple of other things I might be interested in. I was certain that I would buy a Roush 427R because the
package and pricing was so awesome. My salesman in Arizona is a guy named G.R. (stands for Grover but I
would not call him by that name) Stillwell and he is a retired naval officer who has not really left the Navy far
behind. G.R. is a prototypical ex military officer.. shaved head, lean, tough and a true Southern Baptist gentleman
of few words (sort of like fellow club member Jean Yves but shorter and lacking Jean Yves’s charm and wit).
Dealing with G.R. is simple.. he gives me a list of cars pre-discounted at a price that is absolutely non-negotiable.
At this time G.R., who is not a car kind of guy, tells me he has a couple of black ’08 Shelby GT’s. I smugly email
G.R. back that there are in fact no black ’08 Shelby GT’s only black Shelby GT500’s and therefore he must be
talking about a ’07 model. GR sends a short terse email back to me along with the build sheets proving his point.
Boy am I mistaken and this is when the story gets really interesting!
It turns out G.R. did indeed have a black ’08 Shelby GT, a black Barrett-Jackson Shelby GT, one of 100 made for
the Nevada and Arizona sales district. The price was absolutely right and the car is fully loaded, even navigation.
My only reservation was that the Roush 427R, which priced within $1,500 of the Shelby GT, is supercharged and
the Shelby GT is not. Now I’m in true quandary, Shelby or Roush? Supercharger or not? One of 100 or one of
2,000 made? What is a man to do?
My first purely greedy thought was what the hell, BUY BOTH OF THEM! I quickly ruled this option out because
the wrath of my wife and more bank debt was something I did not want to incur, especially the wrath of Anne. I
asked my fellow members Alby, Ron and Mark what they thought. The consensus was that the Barrett-Jackson
Shelby GT would be the best decision based on the fact that I will probably sell the car within a year based on my
past track record with Mustangs.
So, I’m now a proud owner of a ‘08 Barrett-Jackson Shelby GT and the story is not quite over yet, it gets even
better. I decided I wanted to get the Barrett-Jackson people and the Shelby people to sign the my two sun visors. I
took a long shot and emailed Steve Davis, President of Barrett-Jackson, asking if he would sign the one sun visor
and for that signature I would be willing to pay a fee or make a charitable donation, just like old Carroll wants. I
thought that Steve might respond but I did not think my chances were that great. Well I was wrong, because the
very next morning at 8:00am Steve emails me that he and Craig Jackson would be proud to sign the sun visor, no
charge. An hour later Steve’s wife, Janie, calls me to arrange for the sunvisor to be delivered from Sanderson
Ford to the Barrett- Jackson offices in Scottsdale. We talked for about one half hour about the fact that Steve is a
huge Ford fan and collector. Steve bought and paid for two B-J Shelby’s, 1 convertible and 1 coupe, for his own
collection. I arranged for Ron and Mark, who were in Scottsdale on vacation at the time, to take care of the sun
visor delivery and pickup. Ron and Mark got to meet with Steve Davis and they spend a half an hour discussing
Mustang’s and Ford’s in general. Since Steve would not take any money I decided to have Mark pick up flowers
for Janie and he gave them to her when he picked up the signed sun visor. The morning the flowers arrived I get
another call for Janie thanking me for the flowers and we discussed the upcoming Las Vegas auction.
So on Friday the 13th of June 2008 I jumped on plane to Phoenix Arizona. Mark and Ron met me at the airport
and drove me to the dealer in the morning. To avoid the 8% Arizona state taxes I had to take delivery of the car
over state lines, which meant taking delivery in Blythe California. I can tell you that without good friends like Mark,
Alby and Ron I would not have been to pull this deal off. This is why I’m proud to be a member of AMAC, club
members always seem willing to help someone out particularly when it’s the acquisition of a new Mustang. I say
this with some conviction but sometimes I do wonder if Mark, Alby and Ron help out only because they just love to
spend my money. They seem to live vicariously through my acquisitions, as I do with theirs, without the wrath of
their significant others. Maybe they are smarter than I give them credit for?
Ok, now I was on my way home from Blythe California to Calgary Alberta, only 1,800 miles away. I had to be back
at work for Tuesday and it was already Saturday afternoon, no “problemo” man. I took off from Blythe and traveled
a beautiful rolling secondary highway through the desolate countryside. The highway wanders up to Needles, then
Barstow and finally to Las Vegas Nevada. The trip, parts of which trace the old Route 66, went super smooth and
the miles simply rolled on by. The Shelby was running like a dream and I was comfortably cruising at 80–90 miles
Cont’d…
11
per hour through California, Nevada and then into Utah. Saturday night found me in St. George Utah and by
Sunday I was in Great Falls Montana for dinner. The drive and the scenery along the way were breathtakingly
beautiful and I hope to repeat this trip soon. I would recommend that you put a trip like this on your own personal
bucket list.
My one regret is that I did not have more time. I would have liked to stop more often to visit the historical spots. Also
I would have made sure to arrive at Shelby’s factory just outside of Las Vegas on a weekday (they are closed on
the weekend).
The border crossing goes super smooth and I joke it up with the Canadian customs guy who helped me with the
Cal Spec importation back in January 2008. Sorry Russ, your story came up again and the guard and I both had a
good chuckle at your expense. Think about this for a second, when is the last time you got a border guard to laugh?
Maybe they have a picture of Russ on the walls of the inspection garage in Coutts and every time they get bumped
out they look at Russ’s mug shot?
Norm’s Rant - Look, if you can’t afford gas for your newly leased 6,000 lb gas guzzling SUV then maybe you need
to suck it up princess? I don’t want to come off sounding cold and uncaring but the truth is we have had cheap gas
for way too long and it’s finally come home to roost. The real problem is we all got caught being “gas gluten’s” and
now we are living with our poor choices.
Like some of the other older members, I can remember making $1.00 per hour in the early 1970’s working at a
service station when gas prices were $0.40 - $0.50 per gallon. Flash forward to 2008 and you would be earning
$12.00 per hour pumping gas at the local Husky service station. Factor in the current gas price of $1.33 a litre
(about $6.00 per gallon) it gives you a 2:1 ratio (hourly wage / price of gas per gallon). Surprise, surprise that is
exactly the same ratio as the early 1970’s.
Every time that I see a guy driving a new Ford F350 Super Duty or a Chevy 2500HD Duramax into a downtown
parking lot all I can think about is giving the idiot a cuff upside the head. The only dirt these pretty boy trucks ever
see is a gravel alleyway or dirt parking lot. The only reason I can come up with as to why they are driving them is
they must be compensating for something. First these “Yuppie / Gen X’ers human equivalents to a Lemming” had
to have the new BMW or Mercedes, then it was these massive trucks. What would have been next for these fools?..
pimped out dump trucks?
Thankfully with high gas prices these morons are starting to see the light of day and they are buying more
appropriate vehicles. I’m not advocating that we all go out and buy a Ford Focus but maybe a V6 powered vehicle
makes more sense? Think about this fact.. if everyone who owned a Lincoln Navigator switched to a Ford Edge
their fuel bill would drop by 33%. That my friends is a huge savings and this is exactly why the 1974 Mustang II sold
so well the year after the infamous 1973 Arab Oil Embargo. Just as it was in 1974 people are dumping the gas pigs
and purchasing smaller vehicles.
Expect smaller and more efficient cars in the future and that will be a good thing. I think about a Mustang III the size
of a 1964 ½ Mustang with a supercharged V6 making 300 plus horsepower while getting 30 – 40 mpg at regular
highway speeds. Call me a dreamer but we are already on our way there. The ’08 Shelby GT I bought got 28.5 mpg
at an average driving speed of 84.4 mph as I motored home from Phoenix. As a comparison my 1970 Mach 1 gets
a solid 16 mpg at posted highway speeds. On top of this the ‘08 Shelby will kick by ‘70 Mach 1’s ass all day long no
matter what I do.
If you like or dislike my comments email me and let me know what you think.
Norm
P.S. Canadian’s have imported 150,000 vehicles from the US since January 2008 compared to 170,000 for all of
2007. May and June 2008 were record months. Some manufacturers have broken ranks and have recently lowered
the Canadian retail price. It would appear that I and 170,000 other Canadians think a lot alike.

Ford Mustang Production Hits 9 Million
Very few products of reputation have stood the test of time, demand, and production. The Ford
Mustang is one of those elite pieces of American culture that holds prestige and global popularity,
year after year. Ford has reached a respectable milestone in producing over 9 million Ford Mustang
cars for the pony car enthusiast realm to absorb and enjoy, generation after generation. The 9
millionth Ford Mustang built has a bit more of a story to it, so keep reading!
A local farmer, Thomas Krumm (from Story City, IA), went to his local Ford dealer to order a new
Ford Mustang GT convertible and unknowingly put his claim of ownership upon a piece of Mustang
history. He now owns number 9 million, ordered from Gookin Ford located right in Story City.
"Having been a Mustang fanatic my entire life, I couldn't be more excited that my dad is receiving
the 9 millionth Mustang," said Rachael Krumm, who also is a member of the Iowa National
Guard. "I am thrilled that I get to see his Mustang GT and its cool new features before I leave for
Iraq."
The famous Ford pony car is one of the most recognizable brand names in the global automotive &
aftermarket arenas. It is estimated that one out of every two sports cars sold in the United States of
America is indeed a Ford Mustang.
With an aftermarket following of over one billion dollars in sales, no other competitor has even come
close to touching the marketability and success the Ford Mustang exudes. Even reputable
aftermarket venues such as SEMA have declared it the most accessory-friendly vehicle, further
enticing artisans & engineers to join up to make the car even more exciting than Ford ever dreamed.
The story of the Ford Mustang continues to evolve with time, so when news happens that you need to rely on for a
strong base, you can count on StangNet to bring it straight to you as a focused source.

MISC FOR SALE:
MUSTANG TOYS, DIE-CAST AND COLLECTIBLES FOR SALE: I am selling my collection of Mustang toys, die-cast and
collectibles. I have accumulated this collection over the last 10 years. It includes brands such as Hot Wheels, Matchbox,
Johnny Lightning, Road Champs, Racing Champions, Muscle Machines, Micro Machines, Ertl, and others. Most of it is still
mint in package, never opened. Some of it is limited edition and quite rare, such as all three Hot Wheels Treasure Hunt
Mustangs, and a '66 Mustang plastic promo. I also have some other collectibles and novelty items, as well as some other
die-cast including Mopars and Camaros. I will be pricing most of the items for less than what I had paid for it. For further
information, call Shahid at 202-3017 (Jul)
Too much Mustang memorabilia and other automotive collectables, so some of it has to go. I have much more than I need.
Someone else should have an opportunity to enjoy some of it. More than just Mustangs; there is other Ford stuff, as well as
NASCAR and Molson Indy items. There are Hot Wheels, plastic models, cards, magazines, and die-cast, and other
collectables. Stuff is from all decades, including early cars, Mach I's, SVO's, Saleens, newer GT's, and other Ford items.
Much of it still in the original packaging. Contact Russ at (403) 295-6281 or email at [email protected] . (Jul)
Large selection of Mustang and Ford related magazines. They include: Mustang Monthly, Super Ford, Muscle Mustangs
& Fast Fords, 5.0 Mustang, Hot Rod, Car Craft, Mustang Illustrated, Mustang & Fords, Hot Rod Mustang, Fabulous
Mustangs, Popular Hot Rodding, and more. Will sell single issues or boxfuls. Contact Russ at (403) 295-6281 or email at
