Box 8156 Warnbro 6169 Page 2 VOLUME 10 ISSUE 12 Presidents prattle Hi Wanderers, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. With our membership growing monthly, I thought it timely that we should all be reminded about the Ulysses Club‟s only rule, which relates to the wearing of rockers and was introduced in March 2005. Please read the article concerning rockers that is in this edition of Sound Rides and see me if you have any further queries on this subject. Following a query from a member regarding Warnbro Sound Wanderers‟ Committee Meetings, I would like to let everyone know the procedure we follow, which is based on our National Committee‟s procedure. If any member would like to voice a concern or has something of note that they wish the Committee to be informed upon; they have the option of: 1. Approaching a Committee Member to have them raise the item at the next Committee Meeting on their behalf 2. Write a letter or email to the Secretary for inclusion at the next Committee meeting 3. Request a time-slot to present the item to the Committee in person – these are usually ½ hour time-slots; the Committee then discuss the item following the presentation; confer with Natcom if required, and then the outcome is relayed to the memberOur monthly meetings are social meetings and follow the guidelines set out by our National Committee. Our Committee Meetings, by necessity, are not open to members as a rule; however the outcomes of our meetings are presented to our members via our monthly Social Meetings and articles written in The Sound Rides as required. As Christmas is a great time to say „thank you‟, I would like to say a big thank you to the following people: Our MC at ou* Our MC at our social meetings, John Pollock * Our door greeters, JC and Lee Our Sound Rides Editor, Sue * Our Website Mistress, Susan * Our Ride Co-ordinator, Phil * Our Quartermasters, Ian and Sandra * Our Mug of The Month Presenter, Janette, * Our Raffle people, Annie and Alan * Our Barrel Boy, Chris * Our Tail-End Charlie, Sed And last, but certainly not least, our Committee: * JC – Vice President * Lee – Secretary * Pam – Treasurer * Committee: * Ian and Sandra * Shane * Kevin * Phil These people all contribute greatly and my personal thanks go to each and every one of you! See ya there Moorey Mebmer # 47546 Geraldton Branch WA Volume 10 issue 12 page 7 Did you ever wonder why there are no dead penguins on the ice in Antarctica - where do they go? Wonder no more ! ! ! It is a known fact that the penguin is a very ritualistic bird which lives an extremely ordered and complex life. The penguin is very committed to its family and will mate for life, as well as maintaining a form of compassionate contact with its offspring throughout its life. if a penguin is found dead on the ice surface, other members of the family and social circle have been known to dig holes in the ice, using their vestigial wings and beaks, until the hole is deep enough for the dead bird to be rolled into and buried. before they roll the dead bird into the hole, the male penguins all gather in a circle around the fresh grave and sing:..... Since our last Social Meeting we have had a Committee Meeting. Some of the topics discussed are outlined below for your info: 1. The books from the Bare Bones Odyssey have been reconciled. Listen out for details tonight (I don’t want to spoil the great news). 2. Christmas 2010 – your Committee members are working hard on ensuring you all have a great Christmas function. We hope you will come along and celebrate the festive season. Remember to come and see me about tickets - $5 gets you a great night. Scary thought – at the time of this meeting there are just 16 days to our Christmas party and 24 days to Santa coming down the chimney! Hope you all have a clean chimney and the snacks planned for Santa) 3. 10-yr Anniversary – July is fast approaching (or is it that as I get older, the weeks / months get shorter??) and the Committee are preparing for the anniversary celebrations. Look out for details in the New Year. 4. Member List – as you know, I have been asking members to update the local Branch Register (for your info, the info supplied to Head Office during your membership application is confidential and we have to rely on members to update local registers). PLEASE PLEASE complete the Slip placed on the table – unless you personally have given me a new form since September, I would like to have a whole bundle of completed forms before I leave tonight. I am getting a bit of grief by people who need an updated list and if you can help get me out of trouble it would be much appreciated. We have received the latest NATCOM minutes; you are welcome to have a read (but please don’t remove). My thanks to Adrian and Shane for changing the oil in my chariot ......I ask you - just what is wrong with the colour “super black”???? Shane asked me if the chariot was running any better since the oil change. You just have to laugh – I know how my car feels / sounds but sorry, the bike takes a back seat in this regard – it sounded and rode no different. But I am sure it appreciated the little bit of TLC (it also luvs it when Adrian is home – then she gets cleaned as well :) . This is the last Scribble for 2010 so I take this chance to wish you all an awesome Christmas for yourself and your family and look forward to riding with you in 2011. Til next time, stay upright Cheers Lee (Member #51312) Volume 10 issue 12 page 9 How time flys!!! We've left Qld and made our way down to Victoria. After finishing our house sit up in North Rockhampton we went and stayed with a friend of mine from school days that I've kept in touch with. We hadn't seen her in about 3 years. It was great to catch up with her but I was certainly thankful to leave after about 4 days. Jackie had worked so much that we hardly saw her during that time and ended up looking after her elderly mother and 2 kids. While we were there we cleaned up her house. It took 2 days to clean her kitchen just so we could cook. After leaving Jaq's we headed into Brisbane where we had arranged to meet up with some people we're house sitting for next September. We had a couple of relaxing days in the caravan park.. It was a nice break from having to look after animals and not having to wake up early. After leaving Brisy we headed down the central hwy to Victoria. On our way down we had a lot more rain. We stopped at Jerilderie for a night which is almost on the NSW/Vic border. They only had 1 tent sight which was down near the swamp... the mozzies OMG they were terrible. By the time we left the next morning I didn't have an inch of skin that wasn't bitten, I even had bites on the souls of my feet, which drove me crazy. On the way down we went through what we originally thought was a swarm of locus but when a few came in through the window we discovered they were bees. With me being highly allergic to them Grant had to pull over very quickly so we could get them out of the car before I was stung. He was in such a hurry to pull over he stalled the van. We finally got them all out and we continued on our travels. Then the next swarm we hit were locus. The van looks like a blood bath at the moment. We finally got into Melbourne and headed down to the Dandenong‟s were I'd managed to find a cheap caravan park with tent sites - or so their webpage said - when we got there I'd booked the site to be close to the toilets. Well I'd hate to see what there definition of far away was. The park was terribly set up. All the amenities were in the centre where all the cabins are and there was no camp kitchen. The tent site they had put us on had a concrete slab... not sure that what we think of as a tent site was the same as what they considered a tent site. After about 4 nights of sleeping on the air bed it decided to go down. We blew it up again but it went down in about half an hour so we ended up sleeping on the ground. We had 2 more nights to get through, so we suffered through 1 more on the ground and then I went and booked a cabin for our last night...........heaven... a nice bed to sleep in and toilets that I didn't have to walk half a mile to!!!!! Thankfully for the next week we were staying at Grant's brother's place. After being with Grant for 4 years it was nice to finally get to meet Gary and Shell. Gary & Shell work some pretty long hours so we were pretty much left to our own devices. We headed out to do some shopping at Chadstone, which is meant to be the biggest shopping centre in the Southern Hemisphere. It was humungous but parking was difficult but we'd discovered this to be the case at any of the shopping centres we'd been in since arriving in Melbourne. Driving around for about half an hour to find a parking - ridiculous!!. I can't wait to get back to Perth. We've just started our last house sit before heading home for a month. We're down in Sale, Vic, until the 6th Jan before we make the long trek home for my daughters wedding. We're looking after 5 horses and 2 dogs on a 100 acre property. 2 of the horses are aggistment horses so we get paid to look after those 2 for about another week before their owner takes them back. When we get back to Perth it's going to be pretty busy. My court case for my back settlement has finally been given a date, so I have to go through and have more tests and scans to see what damage the long term medication has done to my body. Then I've got Tam's wedding. The day after Tam's wedding we have to leave again and make the long trek back to Melbourne to fly out to NZ for Grant's Volume 10 issue 12 page 10 following weekend. Talk about having to be organised. The day we get back from NZ we start another house sit in Sandhurst Vic, before heading back to Qld. My diary scares the hell out of me at the moment. We have about 33 days that we don't have a house sit until the end of September, then we're heading home ready to fly out to Thailand for the trip that Grant won. We've decided that when we get back in October we will be staying put for a while – well at least until the travel bug takes over again. We've been doing heaps of Mystery Shopping along the line and as it's now the end of the month we've been getting the clean up calls from the companies we work with... ahhh I love the end of the month clean up.. the fees change from $17 - $35 for Westpac and we only have to go in and ask a question about direct debit. We made quite a few phone calls in 1 day and ended up making over $100 - not bad for 30 minutes work. After 12 months of mystery shopping I've finally worked out the best ways to make it work well for us. Well I think that's about it for now. I have to go and do some paperwork ..... I've been a bit slack and haven't done any since before we got to North Rockhampton... not looking forward to the catch up!!!!!!! This will be my last update until we get back to Perth. Hope everyone has a fantastic Christmas and that Santa brings you all lots of wonderful presents. Take it easy on the roads over Christmas and be safe. See you all in January. Mish & Grant The Rooney family... Congratulations to Carli who has passed her test and now has her licence. Also Shane - congratulations on receiving his 15 year membership badge Do you think Lynn & Martin’s furballs should be afraid???? Do you think Lynn & Martin’s furballs sho Do th And for you dog lovers.... they aren’t safe either!!!! you Volume 10 issue 12 page 11 Samaritan's, you've got to love them I found myself in a spot of bother on Sunday 14th November and a good Samaritan came to my rescue. This tale could happen to anyone, any time. After not having ridden my Yamaha Venture for a month since returning from our 10,000 km trip to Tasmania and Canberra, I decided to have a twilight ride down to Mandurah, Dawesville and back along the freeway to home in Baldivis. The bike was running sweet, no problems. It was cool and I was enjoying being back on the bike again, even if only for about an hour. After trying to restart the motor a few times, I got my tool box out to see if I had a plug spanner, but no luck there. Then along came 56 year old John, from Bouvard, in his car to offer assistance. I told him what had happened and what I'd done and we tried the starter again. We then came to the conclusion that I had just taken on some bad fuel with water it. Nothing to be done on the side of the road, so John offered to go home and get his trailer to take me home. Riding through Falcon on Old Mandurah Road, I decided to fill up the tank so it would be full for the next weekends ride to Toodyay. I filled up at the Caltex on the left and then carried on, for about half a kilometer and the bike just died. I coasted to a stop in a left turn slip lane and began Later, I was thinking, this could happen to anyone and you can easily be stranded for hours, possibly in the dark when you can become vunerable to thugs as well. John is not a Ulysses member, but he is a biker and bikers help each other. I have a trailer that can carry a bike up to about ST1100 size (it's more about the weight the ramps can take than the trailer), and I wouldn't hesitate to help a fellow biker in trouble, if it was within my means at the time and so I thought I'd like to offer my mobile number for fellow members to add to their contacts list of their mobile, for emergency pickup assistance in the metro area or nearby country areas, if needed. So to start off the list of Ulysses Helpers my name and number is: Ron Henzen Baldivis 0421 228 20 Put this in your contacts list for Help when needed and one day I may come to your rescue. Happy biking. If a few more of our members with bike trailers do the same, then none of us need fear being stranded away from home when the unexpected happens. We could have a short register in the Sound Rides and on the website of members names and mobile numbers who are willing to help out on the odd occasion. P.S. I‟ve since discovered that the problem was not dodgy fuel, but a failed battery, due for replacement (about five years old). It would appear these modern bikes need a strong battery in good condition to operate with all the electronic stuff on them now. When the voltage drops to a certain level, perhaps 11.5 volts or so, it will just die. I‟m just pleased it didn‟t die on me out in the middle of the Nullabor somewhere. That would have been a much more expensive rescue exercise. So, I guess the moral of the story is: if you‟re going on a long trip, don‟t only service the bike and fit new tyres, but check the age of your battery and if in doubt renew it before you go. Volume 10 issue 12 page 12 Rockers or Other Inappropriate Badges Following is an excerpt from Ulysses Club Incorporated Handbook for Members 3rd Edition regarding the Club’s view on the wearing of Rockers: “Members should not wear inappropriate badges on a garment near the logo, e.g. such as a swastika. Additionally, when the Club logo is worn on the back of a jacket, shirt, vest or other garment, it must not be displayed with any other patch or badge or rockers. This rule was introduced in March 2005 in response to serious threats to the safety and well being of club members by motor cycle gangs, often referred to as “patch clubs”, “1%’ers”, “Outlaws” or “bikie” gangs. The wearing of other such items in conjunction with the Club logo on the back of a vest or jacket etc. may subject the offending member to expulsion from the Club. This rule does not apply to patches or badges worn on the front of a vest or jacket.” Please see the photographs on the following page. Picture 1 shows an acceptable vest; Picture 2 is of Old No. 1 with his vest covered in small patches which is acceptable; pictures 3 and 4 contravene the Clubs ruling as they are classed as Rockers.
