Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 30, 2014, when FJHS celebrates its 18th Annual Hurricane Highlights. This exciting night showcases the outstanding talents of our students. This evening is much more than just a spring open house event. It is truly an extravaganza that you should not miss. Our students look forward to this evening in which they have the opportunity to showcase all of their many talents. Best of all, each and every student has the chance to participate. Be sure to encourage your child to take advantage of this memorable experience by participating in Hurricane Highlights. Included in the evening’s festivities will be an Art show, a Literary show, a Jazz Band performance, a Coffee House with live entertainment, a Silent Auction and much more! See more on pages 6 and 7. ! FONTAINEBLEAU JUNIOR HIGH Whirlwind YEARBOOK FJH ! Yearbooks are still on sale now for $44.00. Pick up your forms in student services. HURRICANE TRACKER April 2014 Page 2 of 15 April is here and at Fontainebleau Jr., that means Hurricane Highlights. This year Hurricane Highlights is on Wednesday April 30th from 6:00 – 8:30pm. Hurricane Highlights is an evening of festivities celebrating all of our student and staff talent. Nearly every student participates in musical performances, art exhibits, cultural dances, and an incredible silent auction in the library. Student work is on display all over the building. You’ll need to come hungry as well. Concessions of all types and cultural cuisine will be available. The food will be great! It is really an incredible evening…don’t miss it!!! Look on the FJH website for all the details and make plans to attend. This is a month filled with happenings at FJH. In addition to Hurricane Highlights, April also sees the conclusion of the Track and Boys Volleyball seasons…Go Canes!!! The FJH website has all of the information about these events. Although I reminded you last month about LEAP and iLEAP testing, the 2013 test is broken into two parts, with one part taken in March and the rest during April 7 - 11. Here’s how you can help your child. The iLEAP test is given to all 7th graders and the results can help predict how well your child will do on the LEAP test next year. Our 8th graders take the LEAP test. Passing this test is necessary to be promoted to the 9th grade, but more importantly, the LEAP test is an accurate predictor of future student success on the ACT and SAT. Teachers and students have been preparing every day for the types of questions and the body of knowledge that are required on these standardized tests. As parents, you can help too. Here’s how: • • Make sure your child is completing their homework and stay current on their progress • During iLEAP/LEAP week, be sure that your child eats properly and gets enough rest. The words, “this is a school night”, will never be more important. • Be positive about your child’s ability to be successful! Everyone can pass these tests. Motivation to not only pass, but to do your best, is the key to success. If possible, check on your child’s writing ability by looking through work being returned and assignments to be turned in. Writing issues are very important. We have spent a great deal of instructional time developing student’s writing. Help us emphasize the importance of writing by getting involved in this area. Have a great April! Dr. Tim Schneider, Principal ! Fontainebleau Jr. High School ! 100 Hurricane Alley, Mandeville, LA 70471 Phone: 985.875.7501 ! I know we have many activities going on in April & May, most importantly standardized testing, but the most important one on my mind is, of course, HURRICANE HIGHLIGHTS, which will be held on Wednesday, April 30th from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this eventful night, let me explain what happens. This exciting open house event showcases the outstanding talents of our students. Each and every student has the chance to participate and show off their academic, artistic, or musical ability. Included in the evening’s festivities will be an Art show, a Literary show, a band/Jazz Band Performance, a concession stand, a Coffee House with live entertainment, a Silent Auction, a chorus performance, Windjammer and cheerleading performances, a fashion show, and so much more!
