April is here and at Fontainebleau Jr., that means Hurricane Highlights. This year
Hurricane Highlights is on Wednesday April 30th from 6:00 – 8:30pm. Hurricane
Highlights is an evening of festivities celebrating all of our student and staff talent.
Nearly every student participates in musical performances, art exhibits, cultural
dances, and an incredible silent auction in the library. Student work is on display all
over the building. You’ll need to come hungry as well. Concessions of all types and
cultural cuisine will be available. The food will be great! It is really an incredible
evening…don’t miss it!!! Look on the FJH website for all the details and make plans
to attend.
This is a month filled with happenings at FJH. In addition to Hurricane Highlights,
April also sees the conclusion of the Track and Boys Volleyball seasons…Go Canes!!!
The FJH website has all of the information about these events.
Although I reminded you last month about LEAP and iLEAP testing, the 2013 test is broken into two parts,
with one part taken in March and the rest during April 7 - 11. Here’s how you can help your child.
The iLEAP test is given to all 7th graders and the results can help predict how well your child will do on the
LEAP test next year. Our 8th graders take the LEAP test. Passing this test is necessary to be promoted to the
9th grade, but more importantly, the LEAP test is an accurate predictor of future student success on the
ACT and SAT. Teachers and students have been preparing every day for the types of questions and the body
of knowledge that are required on these standardized tests. As parents, you can help too. Here’s how:
•
•
Make sure your child is completing their homework and stay current on their progress
•
During iLEAP/LEAP week, be sure that your child eats properly and gets enough rest. The words,
“this is a school night”, will never be more important.
•
Be positive about your child’s ability to be successful! Everyone can pass these tests. Motivation to
not only pass, but to do your best, is the key to success.
If possible, check on your child’s writing ability by looking through work being returned and
assignments to be turned in. Writing issues are very important. We have spent a great deal of
instructional time developing student’s writing. Help us emphasize the importance of writing by
getting involved in this area.
Have a great April!

We’re in the final stretch to summer, and the last few weeks of school will be very hectic!
!
I know we have many activities going on in April & May, most importantly standardized
testing, but the most important one on my mind is, of course, HURRICANE HIGHLIGHTS,
which will be held on Wednesday, April 30th from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m. For those of you who
are unfamiliar with this eventful night, let me explain what happens. This exciting open house
event showcases the outstanding talents of our students. Each and every student has the chance
to participate and show off their academic, artistic, or musical ability. Included in the evening’s
festivities will be an Art show, a Literary show, a band/Jazz Band Performance, a concession stand,
a Coffee House with live entertainment, a Silent Auction, a chorus performance, Windjammer and
cheerleading performances, a fashion show, and so much more! It is truly an extravaganza that
you should not miss! So make plans to join us for a fun-filled evening! And remember, children
must be accompanied by an adult. Check the flyer in this newsletter or online for more specific
information. Also, this is your last chance to donate an item/service for our silent auction. Please
contact Coleen Davis at 875-7501 or me. Your name/company will be highlighted that night as
well as in our May PTA newsletter and online!
!
Our departments and clubs are collecting items from students to create baskets for the auction. The money collected
from these baskets goes directly to the specific department/club.
ELA – BBQ items !
YAP – Dog/cat items !
Social Studies – Louisiana items !
Math - Tailgating items
Just send any donated items with your child-deadline is Tuesday, April 29th. We appreciate all of your help.
!
Also, we need many volunteers to make this night a success. Please contact me if you can help roll the halls on April 14th
and 15th or wrap auction baskets on April 28th-30th or help decorate on HH day, or help the night of HH. Your help is greatly
appreciated.
!
The 8th grade Luau will be held on April 11th in the gym from 7-9:30 pm. Tickets are $5.00, and will be sold during lunch
on April 9th, 10th, and 11th. You will not be allowed to buy a ticket if you are on the “OWE” list (cafeteria, library, fundraiser, etc.
fees) or BLUE List.
!
Jerseys for Jeremy will be April 17th. For a $1 donation to homeroom teachers, students may wear their favorite sports
team jerseys/shirts and blue jeans. More information will be distributed prior to that day.
!
Spring vacation is from April 18th-25th!
!
April 29th we will have our Incoming Parent Meeting for all new students for the 2014-15 school year. It will be held in the
cafeteria beginning at 6:30pm.
Please note the following important May dates:
On May 14th, Academic Awards will be held in the gym beginning at 7:00 pm. This is by invitation only, which will be
delivered to students on May 1st. Students are invited based on the following criteria: 3.5 overall GPA for the year,
receiving a departmental award (ELA, Math, etc.-these are a surprise), being recognized for PTA district and state
winning contest entries, receiving state or grand recognition from the DUKE Talent Search, winning at the regional
and/or state science and social studies fair, receiving citizenship awards, perfect attendance, president’s education
award, and any other special recognitions. Please check with your child to see if he/she
has received one.
FJH
Canes
!
On May 16th, we will hold our volunteer appreciation luncheon (11:30 am to 1:00
pm) for all those who so generously donated their time to our school this year. Invitations will
be sent out at the end of April. If you have volunteered this year, especially after hours, please
be sure that I have your name and address as I want to be sure every volunteer gets an
invitation. Drop me a quick line via e-mail. I look forward to seeing everyone at the luncheon.
There are many other activities culminating in May. Please check the website
calendar for the latest information and important dates, as well as the
calendar on the next page.

Don’t forget to pay your
student’s school
breakfast/lunch!
Go directly to PaySchools
We encourage parents to use the PaySchool system to pay for student’s lunch/breakfast.
Students paying by check should use the envelopes and drop box inside the cafeteria. Please make sure that the student’s
name is written in the memo of the check so we can ensure the account is credited correctly. Students will be warned by
the cafeteria staff when their account level is $3.00 or less. Please make every effort to keep your child’s lunch account
current. Students with negative balances are placed on the “OWE List” and may not be allowed to participate in
extracurricular activities, clubs, dances, etc.
We appreciate your help in this matter. Questions concerning your students account
can be directed to the Cafeteria at 985-875-7672.
