Merging Aerial Maps
Merging Aerial Maps (Rasters) As a note, for this instruction the aerials have a “sid” file extension 1. First make sure the aerials are projected and georeferenced. Then add each aerial to the ArcMap layout. This map has 3 aerials 2. Open your Toolbox (red toolbox icon) and click on Data Management Tools > Raster > Create Raster Dataset. The text box below will pop up: 3. 4. 5. 6. In the text box fill out the following and then click OK. Output Location – the folder name you would like to save the merged aerial in Raster Dataset Name with Extension – name of merged aerial and make sure you place the file extension on it (a common one to use is jpg) Cellsize – can leave blank Pixel Type – leave alone Spatial Reference for Raster – can leave blank Number of Bands – type in the number of bands that show up in the individual aerials. In this case the aerials have 3 bands, so the number of bands for the new raster dataset will be 3. The new raster dataset should show up in your Table of Contents. Once the new raster is created go back to the Data Management Tools. This time go to the Raster – Mosaic Another text box will appear. Fill out the following and click OK Input Rasters – Aerials you want to merge Target Raster – the raster you just created 7. The tool should execute and you will have a merged aerial that is georeferenced as shown below: ** The black box is typical to fill in blank spaces between aerials. Since the image is a jpg, the black pace can be cropped out.
