COMMITTEE’S ADDRESS
Sat Sri Akal and greetings from the
management committee members
It has been close to three months since our
team was formed and we have been moving
rapidly in our journey to lead the club in the
right direction.
We have identified our strengths that will
be pooled together in order to be successful.
The committee has a mix of seniors and
juniors.
All are experts in various fields and together
we can cover almost all of the crucial needs of
the club.
It really does not get better than this.
For starters, there are now more junior
development programmes in football,
2
hockey, netball, boxing, darts and pool.
The response has been good and we are
more than happy to accommodate more
members and their children.
A new playground is also being built for
the younger children.
For enhanced security, we have installed
more CCTV cameras for better surveillance.
Our discipline and compliance division has
been keeping everything in check.
We are also active on social media in
keeping members updated.
Newsletters will be produced every
two months to inform you of SSU’s latest
happenings, achievements and upcoming
activities that you can take part in.
The committee is also delighted to have
members coming forward to share their ideas
and expertise.
This will help us develop more activities,
see active involvement from members, and
develop a talent pool.
There is also a list of cultural events coming
up that will be mainly for the women.
On another note, we urge members to
adhere to the new dress code for the dining
hall.
We look forward to bringing you more
updates in our November newsletter.
Till then, the SSU management committee
2016/2018 will continue to persevere in
attaining only the best for the club.

Selangor Sikh Union (SSU)
Kelab Aman vice president
THE prominent 46-year-old lawyer from Kuala Lumpur was
recently appointed to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission
(MACC) Consultation and Corruption Prevention Panel (CCPP).
Baljit, who is co-founder of Messrs. Shukor Baljit & Partners is
among 13 others, who will serve the independent panel until Aug
15, 2017.
Married to Datin Dr Sarvinder Kaur, who is Asia Pacific University
of Technology and Innovation Foundation School Head, the
father of three spoke to SSU Post about his appointment.
SP: How do you regard your appointment?
DB: This is another great milestone in my career. In 2012, I was
awarded the Honorary Police rank of Assistant Commissioner of
Police (ACP) by the Royal Malaysian Police.
SP: Why do you think you were appointed to the panel?
DB: I believe it is linked to my experience over the years in
handling criminal litigation process, especially in graft-related
cases. My active involvement in the Bar Council could have also
been a contributing factor.
SP: What are the duties of the panel members?
DB: The panel members are there to advise MACC on
policies and compliance to better enhance the function of the
anti-graft body.

HAPPENINGS
VIBRANT colours and music ruled the night
when about 100 women gathered to celebrate
the Teeyan festival.
They came garbed in their most colourful salwaar
kameez and gharara and spent the evening
singing boliyan and dancing giddha.
The event, under the social cultural and
development portfolio, was held for the first time
at the Selangor Sikh Union (SSU) Kelab Aman.
It also marked the women gathering and cultural
programme by the new committee after the club’s
Event coordinator Balvinder Kaur dancing
annual general meeting in June.
Club member Balvinder Kaur coordinated the
event.ies
“Teeyan is one of the few prominent festivals
celebrated grandly in India and we should
continue to practise our culture,” said Balvinder,
who also explained what was the significance
of the festival. (See below for more details on
Teeyan)
The evening kicked off with the lighting of lamps
by the club’s assistant secretary Reena Raj, who
also chairs the social cultural and development
committee and Kavaljit Kaur, the wife of SSU
president Gagandeep Singh.
It was then followed by a group of women singing
Punjabi traditional folk songs.
They then danced giddha and sang boliyan to the
beat of the dholki.
Master of ceremony, Jasmeet Kaur hosted the
event.
At the event, best dressed prizes were given to
Dalwin Kaur and Harpal Kaur.

WHAT IS THE TEEYAN FESTIVAL?

September 2016 - SSU POST
Teeyan is the dance festival of Punjabis, celebrated
by women in the month of Sawan —
 when the
days of summer have grown longer and hotter.
During this period, married daughters usually come
back to their parent’s house and meet their female
friends every evening to share their anxieties with
each other through song and dance.
The dancing usually takes place by a river or pond
under big shady trees where swings are thrown
over the branches.
