Shakespeare’s “Hamlet” in the Park July 29 The popular Shakespeare in the Park returns to the Community Park on July 29th at 7:00. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company will be presenting William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Bring your chairs and blankets for a special evening of free entertainment. Hamlet is Shakespeare’s tale of murder and revenge, with a ghost thrown in just for fun. Hamlet’s father, the King of Denmark, dies suddenly. Hamlet is visited by a ghost who claims that the dead king was murdered by his brother. The ghost demands that Hamlet avenge the death. Hamlet is torn with indecision. Was it the ghost of his father who spoke to him or an evil spirit tempting him to sin? If he kills the new king, will it be murder or will it be vengeance? “To be or not to be?” is the famous question that Hamlet asks. Cincinnati Shakespeare Company is a professional acting company in downtown Cincinnati that presents plays by Shakespeare and other classics year round. Information about their summer show and the upcoming season is available at www. cincyshakes.com. Monroe’s “Light Up the Sky” Fourth of July Festival will end in a bang with fireworks displays on July 4th at Monroe Community Park. Schedule of Events Band On the Run 5K Event Is More Than Just a Race submitted by Ryan Corris On August 1, 2010, The Monroe Band Boosters will host the Band On the Run 5K Event. The obvious part of the event is the 5K run / walk that will begin at 9:00 am. The band boosters would love to see as many people participate as possible in the 5K to help raise money for all of the Monroe bands. If you are interested in running or walking, visit the following link to sign up: http:// premierraces.com/2010Races/ Band.html. While the race is a big part of the day, there will be many other family activities to participate in throughout the day. There will be carnival type games, a raffle, kids contests, food, and vendors. To feed the hungry crowds, Marco’s Pizza will be selling pizza by the slice. To help you cool off on the first day of August, visit the Kona Ice Truck, which will have flavored shaved ice, water, and ice cream treats. Planet Smoothie will also be there to pass out smoothies to the July 2010 first ten runners to cross the finish line, and to sell some fruit smoothies throughout the day. Many prizes will be raffled off. We have gift certificates to local businesses, such as The Red Onion and Target. You can win free games at Eastern Bowling Lanes as well as Monster Mini Golf in West Chester. Pierson Automotive has donated four oil changes for our raffle to keep your car in good shape. There will be at least one cash prize. The amount will be determined the day of the event and will depend on how many raffle tickets are sold. While we do have some nice prizes already, we are always looking to increase the number of prizes that we are able to give. So if you know of anyone that would like to donate prizes for our raffle, please have them contact Ryan Corris at (513) 324-7674. Game tickets can be used two ways. All game tickets can be used both as raffle tickets and game tickets. If you do not want to play games, you can just place the tickets in the raffle box. If you want to play games, use the tickets for your enjoyment at games like the duck pond, hole in one, beanbag toss, tic-tac-toe, and others. Any tickets that are used for games will also be placed in the raffle box before the drawings take place. Anyone who plays games will also have the opportunity to receive “winner” tickets that can be used to redeem for prizes in the prize booth. Carnival games will start at 8:00 am and continue to the end of the event at 2:00pm. Game tickets can also be used to enter the “kids” contests. After the 5K, there will be races on the track, soccer goal contest, field goal kicking contest, and a baseball throwing contest. These contests will begin at 10:00am. Let the games begin! As you can see, you do not need to be a runner to enjoy the Band On the Run 5K Event. There will be a little something for everyone to enjoy. We hope to see you there! 3:00 Gates Open 3:00 Kid Games, Food and Craft Booths Open 3:30 Live Music by “This Just In” 4:00 Parade (Macready at Kroger to Elm to Main to Park) 5:00-7:00 Children’s Storytime Readings in the Historical Society’s Pioneer Cabin 5:30 Live Music By “Balderdash” 6:00 Old Tyme Baseball Game 7:30 Live Music “The Rick House Band” 9:30 Light Up The Sky! Our Lady of Sorrows Church Celebrates New Pastor Late last year, Father Terry Meehan resigned as pastor for health reasons, and has now moved on to enjoy a productive and enjoyable retirement. Father Tim Bunch from St. Peter in Chains in Hamilton was appointed temporary administrator, and Father Phil Seher and Father David Kohut served as visiting priests who celebrated weekend liturgies at the church. On March 25, Archbishop Schnurr appointed Father Ed Pratt as the next pastor. Father Pratt will celebrate Mass at Our Lady of Sorrows Church beginning the weekend of July 10/11, and will live in the newly refurbished Parish House. Prior to entering the seminary, Father Ed spent almost 20 years as a Human Resources Director and consultant. Most of his work was with Church-related employers including the Mercy Hospitals of Hamilton and Fairfield. Father Ed has been a priest for two years, ordained in 2008 by retired Archbishop Daniel Pilarczyk. He completed his seminary internships at Mount Pleasant Retirement Village in Monroe and Ascension Parish in Kettering. As a priest, he served as Associate Pastor at St. Albert the Great Church in Kettering and is currently assigned as Associate Pastor of both St. Rita and Precious Blood Parishes in Northwest Dayton. He is a graduate of Bishop Fenwick High School, Xavier University and Mount Saint Mary’s Seminary. For the last two years, he has been the Clergy Advisor to the administration team at Bishop Fenwick High School. New members are welcome at the church, located at 330 Lebanon Street in Monroe. Masses are Saturday at 5:15 pm and Sunday at 8:00 and 10:30 am. Phone 539-8061. Email [email protected]. Website www.olosmonroe.com. MONROE OBSERVER PAGE 3 July 2010 COLUMNS School Treasurer’s Report Financial Status of the Monroe School District By Dr. Noble Allman Back Pain Prevention This summer seems to be challenging many backs! The rain keeps the grass growing, the flowers blooming, and the weeds going out of control. Many people have been taking out old shrubs and putting in new. Yards of mulch were laid all around town. All this yard work has caused many sore backs! Back injuries are very common in everyday life. They can cause sharp or dull aches and occasionally cause numbness or tingling in the arms and legs. Sometimes these injuries lead to weakness in the hip, legs, and pelvis. Many minor injuries heal within a day or two. But many times the muscles and spine are not properly prepared for the activity and the injury is inevitable. The good news is that much of back pain is preventable. At the least, taking certain steps can minimize the intensity of the pain or soreness. The following Tips can help prevent Back Pain: • Maintain a healthy diet and weight. • Remain active – under the supervision of your doctor of Chiropractic. • Avoid prolonged inactivity or bed rest. • Warm up or stretch before exercising or other physical activities. • Maintain proper posture. • Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes. • Sleep on a mattress of medium firmness to minimize the cure in your spine. • Lift with your knees, keep the object close to your body, and do not twist. • Quit smoking. Smoking impairs oxygen to your muscles causing them to weaken. We care about your back and spine health. If you have any specific questions about Back Pain Prevention, please call Dr. Noble Allman, Chiropractic Physician at (513) 727-2540 at Pledger Orthopaedic and Spine Center. It is not very summer-like in the treasurer’s office. While all of the schools are closed down for break, we are in our busiest season as we close one fiscal year, open a new fiscal year, and prepare for the annual audit. School districts are required by the Ohio Auditor of State to conduct annual audits of the school’s finances. This annual audit is a rather lengthy process. While the Auditor of State’s office is actually responsible for these audits, due to the volume of districts and other government entities, the audit is often contracted out to local firms. This is the case for Monroe. The Ohio Auditor of State has employed the firm Clark, Schaefer, & Hackett to conduct this annual financial review for us. Sometime in late July, once the books are closed on Fiscal Year 2010, the auditors will show up. Several auditors will basically camp out in the board office off and on for several weeks while they pull copies of checks and purchase orders, verify end-of-the year financial data, and assess our compliance with the Ohio Revised Code for financial accountability. They will also conduct interviews with other school employees to help insure the absence of fraud in the treasurer’s office. They will then take all of the documentation collected back to their offices and go through them with a fine tooth comb. They will be looking not only for signs of fraud or non-compliance with the law, but also for good cash management techniques and proof of proper accounting procedures. Often, they will return to our offices again in September for another week to pull any additional documentation they may need. By the end of November, the audit is finally coming to a close. During the months prior, members of the auditing team have spent many hours in contact with me or my staff – often in the office actively going through files. It is a tedious process requiring everyone’s participation. Once the audit is finished, I prepare a Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR) that includes the auditor’s approval letter and any findings. The annual CAFR is available to the public and can be found on the Treasurer’s Department page of the Monroe Local Schools website. Last year, the 2009 audit was the best audit Monroe has ever had. We received fewer audit findings than in previous years. We also received the Certificate of Excellence for Financial Reporting for the CAFR from both the Association of School Business Officials (ASBO) and the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA). I am confident that this year’s upcom- ing audit will be even better! Last month, I outlined for you some of the changes that we have made in the treasurer’s office over the last couple of years. Many of these changes were recommended by findings during previous audits. If you have any questions about the audit process or the financial status of the Monroe Local School District, please don’t hesitate to drop me a line. I can be reached at 539-2536 or at kthorpe@ monroelocalschools.com. See you in the fall! 513.360.2888 Professional Cleaning Service 117 S. David will be honored during an Induction Convocation this fall on the campus of University of Dayton. “NSCS is more than just a symbol of academic achievement. Membership gives students access to a number of amazing benefits including career and networking resources, scholarships, travel and service projects both on campus and in the community,” says Stephen E. Loflin, NSCS executive director. NSCS is a member of the Association of College Honor Societies and membership is by invitation only, based on grade point average and class standing. David is a 2009 graduate of Monroe High School and is currently a sophomore at the University of Dayton, pursuing a degree in English. Morris Inducted into Beta Epsilon Delta Cory Morris was inducted into the Beta Epsilon Delta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Miami University on April 28, 2010. Morris (19) of Monroe, Ohio is a 2008 graduate of Monroe High School and is majoring in Zoology. He hopes to further his education with a degree in dentistry. He is the son of Mike and Brenda Morris also of Monroe. Established in 1918 by two-year college presidents, Phi Theta Kappa is the oldest and most prestigious honor society serving two-year colleges around the world. Students must rank in the top 20% of the class to be invited to membership in Phi Theta Kappa and must maintain high academic standing during their enrollment in the two-year college. In 2008 and again in 2009 Cory wrote essays to the Adam C. Ports Memorial Foundation in hopes of winning a Scholarship. Adam was a young man also interested in the Martial Arts and had received his black belt in Tae Kwon Do just prior to his untimely death. In honor of him and his love for the Martial Arts, his parents created this scholarship. Both years, Cory has received $1,000.00 scholarship money from this foundation. The Adam C. Ports Memorial Foundation offers scholarships to further the academic education of young adults training in the Martial Arts and attending college. Each applicant is evaluated in Academic achievements, leadership, Martial Arts accomplishments and a submitted essay. Cory has achieved the rank of second degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do and is currently studying for his third degree. He trains at Shinken Martial Arts under Ernie Pendergrass, 6th Dan. Cory is also training in Jujitsu and is a member of the Shingital Jujitsu Association. The Adam C. Ports Foundation sponsors a yearly Golf Tournament in Adam’s name. If interested in contributing or playing in the tournament, please contact the ACP Foundation, 330264-1885. There wasn’t a day that went by that she didn’t have to take a picture of something or somebody, just because it looked like a special event to her. Forty, fifty, and sixty years later, I still have to admit thast she was exactly right, as usual. On the other hand, it just got too expensive for us, twenty years ago, before digital stuff, to take a living history about each and every thing that happened, even though Mom did it all of her adult life. Include your club news on these pages.... Submit your news to monroeobserver.com or email [email protected] For my eighth birthday, Mom and Dad gave me a real, live Brownie Holiday camera ALL MY OWN. Before that, I had to settle for using Mom’s old Brownie Box camera, that was probably around when Columbus discovered America. Well, that new-fangled Brownie even had a flash attachment, to allow me to take pictures at night and in the house, our Church, at school, or wherever... and I did, much to the distress of my family, friends, and those who walked through our lives. After going through a few dozen rolls, I got so I was fairly good at using that little jewel. One of my favorite shows on television. at that time was called “Candid Camera.” Now my sisters didn’t call me “Sneaky Pete” fer nothing. Whenever my one sister would have a boyfriend over for dinner, or for the evening to watch our new-fangled Stromberg Carlson T.V., I was in my glory. I was ordered to stay out of the living room so they could watch television and talk in peace. Now, I didn’t find that a viable alternative and did whatever I could to make certain that they didn’t enjoy watching t.v. any more than I enjoyed not being allowed to watch it either. I’d grab my camera and carefully slither into the parlor (next to the living room) on my belly, just like John Wayne in those war movies, or like Cochise (my personal hero) would sneak up on a buffalo. I’d poke my head around the corner to see if they had heard me coming up on their blind side. If I was real lucky they would be engrossed in the show, or smooching, or some such thing and I’d gain another trophy picture to add to my scalp belt. My sister would let out a war whoop and go hollering to Mom that I’d done gone and done it again. Well, as is still the case today, I loved eating in those days, and Mom fixed a great dessert, no matter what she tried to make. There were many nights that I’d not be allowed dessert, because of my expertise in photography. Sis always did wonder why I didn’t go into the movies and become a cinematographer. I guess I didn’t because I was always afraid I’d never get another fresh apple, peach, or pumpkin pie again. Looking back, I must admit, sheepishly, in retrospect, that I did give her and her boyfriends an awful hard way to go. The neat thing about that little Brownie camera is that I have a very clear record of what life in small-town USA was like in the 1940’s and 1950’s... and it was a very good year, every year. I learned a lot about life, animals, people, and myself while using that little Brownie Box Camera. These are memories that I’ll not lose over time, but that I tell my children and grandchildren about... and will continue to tell the tales of “back then, in the good old days” until the day that either the memory or body is no longer capable of telling the tale. That little village has pictures from 23 albums that Mom filled, plus many other pictures, that tell the living history of that time, and the people who participated in that space and time. It’s something all of you might want to think about looking into within your own family. There is a logical reason for Who-What-Why-When-Where and How. It’s about you. He is a member of the 926th Medical Detachment of Ft. Benning, GA in Camp Liberty, Bagdad, Iraq. Close your eyes and think of the rush. The little jump your heart gets as the wheels touch ground and the plane comes to a halt. Even gazing out of the window, watching the ground climb toward you, you get the feeling. The adrenaline releases even though you are anticipating the landing. Now, imagine there is no warning when this occurs. I was asleep in the tail section of the C-17, Iron & Wine playing in my headphones, when I felt the plane jolt. The last thing you want to feel while flying into war is our plane jump and rock suddenly. The plane halted, the tail dropped, and we stepped - or fell - out onto the runway. When you think about finally getting boots on ground in a desert warzone, the first thing that comes to mind is not cold. And it’s definitely not raining. No, in the imagination of a young warrior mentally preparing himself for the rigors of combat, there is no such thing as rain or cold. There is only desolate scorched earth. There is no 24-hour sandwich bar, and definitely no Cinnabon. But things are different now, and I’ve gained 15 pounds. It’s hard to stay on top of the sense of complacency that grows inside of you when you can wear your PT clothes around all day long. Yes, carrying around a rifle helps keep it in check, but it is still frighteningly easy to let your guard down. Between the tours of Saddam’s beautiful palaces, fishing in the canals, and grilling ribs and burgers at the office, it is easy to feel at home. You have to actively remind yourself that there are people, right on the other side of that wall, who don’t like you and, quite possibly, want to kill you. It’s a harsh reminder to yourself, but a necessary one. I’m sitting in a chai shop drinking the best tea I’ve ever tasted. The man next to me is talking on the phone with his daughter in the States. She’s apparently not allowed to go to the Jonas Brothers concert with just Erica and Stacy. “Mom will be going with you.” This is no different than Starbucks back home, except I don’t get the free weekly iTunes download card with my order. I step outside and I jump back to reality. The sun is beating down on me. The dust in the air stings my eyes and chokes me with each breath. PAGE 10 10 July 2010 MONROE OBSERVER COMMUNITY CHURCH D I RE C T OR Y Steven Urso Weatherman June Outlook Summer is in full swing across the Ohio Valley following a very active month of June. Severe weather in June even caused “Touchdown Jesus” to burn as a result of a lightning strike. The month of June ended with above normal temperatures and precipitation. The month ended with multiple days of 90 degree temperatures. Will the warmer than normal temperatures continue as we head into July? July temperatures will be above normal with most days if not all being above 80 degrees. We may eke out a day with temperatures in the upper 70’s but given the weather pattern, cool days will be hard pressed to come by during the month of July. The 90 degree temperatures will be prevalent throughout the month. A bigger story will be the humidity and the many days during the month that will feel downright oppressive. The maximum high temperature for July will approach 90 degrees and the coolest temperatures will be around 79 degrees. Overall temperatures will end up above normal for July. Precipitation during the month of July will be above normal as a result of the high humidity. The high humidity will spark off daily chances of showers and thunderstorms throughout the month. I expect several rounds of showers and thunderstorms to develop throughout the month and some of those storms will be severe. What will the forecast be like for the 4th of July? This year we stand a good chance of seeing a decent Fourth of July. The temperatures will likely be warm with highs well into the 80’s to near 90. We will stand a chance of seeing pop up thunderstorms thanks in large part to the high humidity. The month of July will be hot and wet which will be significantly different from last July, because last July was one of the coolest in history. Will this warmer than normal weather continue as we head into dog days of August. Cya next month!
