¡A Grito
Pelado!

Three to Meet
By Don Willems
W
e would like to introduce you to 3 people who
make their home, and run their businesses
here in Manuel Antonio and Quepos. They
are 3 of the nicest people you could meet, and are
true friends of the local gay community, as well as to
those who visit.
The first of our featured guests is Marco Fallas.
Marco is a native Tico. He was born in San Jose in
1983 and has lived in the Quepos area for the last
5 years.
Three years ago, Marco began to see the need for a
livery service which could offer the highest quality,
while featuring the friendliest, and best trained, bilingual chauffeurs, for those visiting Costa Rica.
With this in mind, Samatransfer was born in 2013.
Samatransfer proudly provides deluxe travel for
groups of up to 6 people, between San Jose and
Manuel Antonio/Quepos, as well as, many other
destinations. Your comfort is assured in a new, fully
air-conditioned, Hyundai H1.
Your driver will greet you, upon your arrival and is
ready to give you professional and personal service.
He will gladly make all the stops you request, be
they for beverages, dining, rest breaks, or photo
opportunities, including the popular Crocodile Bridge.
Transportation from San Jose to Manuel Antonio is
$175 for 6 passengers. For other destinations please
contact Marco.
Our next guest is Roxidalia Quesada.
Roxidalia was born in 1985 and is a native of Quepos.
She attended the American University in San Jose,
for 5 years, where her field of study was in physical
therapy.
A 1 ½ hour of therapy is as little as $40. Massages
are between $75-$85, depending on duration.
Roxi is currently working hard to improve her english
language skills. She does her best and promises to
do all she can to help you to feel better. Her personal
philosophy is to take care of yourself and to love
yourself.
Rounding out our trio is Milton Valle.
Milton was born in 1981 and has been living in
Quepos for more than 7 years.
Milton has recently opened Creek Canyoning
Tours, which provides canyoning and waterfall
rappelling.
Canyoning is a multi-sport adventure in which you
explore a canyon and locate good streams and
waterfalls, of which to rappel, by sliding down by rope
and jumping into cool pools at the base of the falls.
Enjoy the cool waters and beauty of the area’s falls.
The tour is a full adventure lasting 4 hours. Tour
times are 7:30 am, and 12:30 pm.
Your tour will be lead by a bi-lingual guide. It will
include 5 Full rappels (1 free fall, 2 canyon walls,
and 2 waterfalls). A suspension bridge option can be
added. High quality gear is used in canyoning and
rock climbing.
Transportation is provided to and from your hotel. A
photographer is available to take quality shots of your
and your friends in action.
Finish up your adventure with an included full Costa
Rican style meal.
The cost of this exhilarating tour is $85 per person.
Photos can be purchased separately.
You may have seen Roxi at Manuel Antonio Fitness
Gym, where she currently works as a gym instructor
and personal trainer.
A portion of your cost goes directly to aid a small
local community called Los Campesinos and its
residents.
When not at the gym, Roxi fills her time with her skills
as a physical therapist. Her specialty is helping those
with sport injuries. She also practices holistic therapy
techniques. When feeling tense Roxi will help you
work things out with a great massage.
We hope you get a chance to meet all 3 of our special
guests. Marco, Roxi and Milton are proud of what
they do and love their work, and it shows. Look for
their contact information and find their ads on pages
10-11 in this issue of Playita.

Tips for a SAFE TRIP
By Jose Chaves
W
elcome to Costa Rica. We are a
peaceful country but no different
than any other destination around
the world.
• When you use ATM’s don’t allow strangers
to stand near you and avoid taking unsolicited
help. Put your money away prior leaving the
ATM.
Here are some recommendations for a pleasant trip to be used here or any other country
you visit.
• If you need to check a map, do so in a public
and secure area or ask police officer for help.
• Keep your documents in a safe place and
carry a copy of your passport with all the relevant information and the arrival stamp.
• Don’t leave unattended your possessions
whenever you are in a public area (hotel lobby,
transport, airports, the beach, restaurants,
etc.)
• Ask for information at the front desk of your
hotel about the safest routes and means of
transportation, especially during nighttime.
• Exchange money currency only at banks and
approved change offices. Bank transactions
requires a passport (not a copy).
• Keep car windows closed and doors locked
when traveling and parking. Do not leave
items in your car.
• If you get a flat tire, or something tells you
something is wrong with your car, you are
bumped from behind or you are being followed, DO NOT STOP. Call 911 (even without
cell line it works) and seek police assistance or
drive to a gas station, busy shopping center or
police station.
Enjoy your trip. Little caution will make it better
and unforgettable.

Keep it Happy, Keep it Snappy, Keep it
Gay… Learn Spanish the EASY way!
By OS
¡Hola amigos! ¿Todo en orden? I hope you have
read my cinco previous articles. If not, contact me
and I will e-mail them to you. They are ESSENTIAL
because they teach you important stuff about
español.
Before to continue, translate these words to
inglés:
¿QUÉ?=
¿QUIÉN?=
¿DÓNDE? =
¿CUÁNTOS? =
¿CUÁNTO? =
¿CUÁL? =
¿CUÁNDO? =
¿CÓMO? =
¿POR QUÉ? =
¡Beautifully done guys! Last issue we talked
about the super important “¿QUIÉN?” word…
This month, we are gonna talk about the ¿DÓNDE?
one:
¿DÓNDE está el baño? = ¿WHERE is the bathroom?
¡Yes! It’s a saver one phrase indeed; when you need
to peeh (or something else) and need to find where
the toilet is you can say: ¿DÓNDE está el baño?
But what if you interested in knowing where someone is? What if you want to know the location of a
man named Waldo? Well, you can ask: ¿DÓNDE
está Waldo?
And what if you wanna know where a place
or thing is? Is is as simple as: ¿DÓNDE está
__________? and say the name of the place or
the object you are looking for… Let’s translate this:
Where is Karma? = ¿__________________?
Where is the beach? = ¿__________________?
Where is the supermarket? = ¿____________?
Where is the bus stop? = ¿_______________?
Where is my telephone? = ¿_____________?
Where is my drink? = ¿__________________?
Where is my key? = ¿_________________?
YOUR HOMEWORK. Ask to your friends or people
you know about where other people, places and/or
objects are!!!
Os has been teaching Spanish for more
than 2000 days to ALL levels and ages…

Still the Best
I
By Todd Pequeen
love Manuel Antonio. I sincerely do, with all my heart.
This year I have been asked more than ever about the
validity of the community and its future. The doubts,
questioning, and negativity often gets filtered through
to me when I am massaging my clients, socializing
with tourists, and sharing the many wonders of Manuel
Antonio. Having lived in this little beach town for almost
two decades, my opinion on local happenings and the
status of past glory days are always in question. Typically
the questions revolve around construction worries,
crowds, and particularly the loss of freedom on the now
almost forgotten about gay beach. All of these concerns
are valid and are things which I had to go through a
process to stand where I do today, with absolute positivity.
Change is so important, natural, and fundamental that
if Manuel Antonio was not experiencing growing pains I
would be alarmed.
All of us, as humans and adults, can remember when
change rocked our worlds, either by intention or by fate.
I know for me the more drastic the change, the more I
was forced to deal with it, eventually (sometimes a long,
long time) it produced knowledge and wisdom. Often
times exactly what I needed at that stage of my life. I
could have gone on kicking and screaming, fighting what
was happening, but that would not have altered reality
no matter how hard I tried. Change is as natural birth
and death. Very often I was unable to comprehend the
benefits, joys, and wisdom that resulted in one door being
closed, then being forced into another room. I feel this
way about Manuel Antonio. I cannot resent, I will not be
a victim, and my personal resistance with these matters
will only lead to bitterness and dis-ease. I refuse to
accept either of those things. Instead of being a downer,
a depressant, I want to be a stimulant.
I choose to embrace the construction as housing for
possible new friends, clients, and the possible missing
links who may help to solve old problems. These people
could possibly be the ones who may begin ambitious
new community projects. Construction means a
vigorous economy and is proof the pura vida style life
and love is spreading to more people, and they like
it! The new establishments are giving this community
a greater variety of night life, restaurants, and options
previously impossible just a few years ago. The growth
has added DJ´s to our mix, and the possibility of more
art and culture, as well as... yes, condos and traffic. No
matter how developed Manuel Antonio gets rarely have I
thought of it as crowded. Admittedly, a bar or bus may
be full but the jungle and ocean have ample room for
decompressing. Finally, the intrusion and presence on
the gay beach I admit I still need some time to come to
terms with. Gay or strait, a beach or a mountain, when
money lays claim to any public natural oasis I cannot help
to feel sad. I will not let that affect my comfort or my
routine. I firmly believe that nothing is big or bad enough
to alter Manuel Antonio’s magic.
Yes, change is in the air as it has always been. The beauty
of the environment and the local community will never be
altered. Manuel Antonio will always be recognizable and
in my opinion, still the best.

Between December 1st and April 30th, (High Season) the tours tend to be more
in the afternoons and are more exclusively LGBT. From May 1st till November
30th, (Green Season) the tours tend to be in the mornings, with mixed crowds,
but always with the most gay friendly tour operators and crew.
