LAST YEAR [MLS]

 This is the only league meeting between the teams this season.
 Sounders FC have won the last three meetings between the teams, and are undefeated in the last five league
encounters in the series (4-0-1), including a 1-0 win last year at CenturyLink Field in the only meeting. United’s
last win against Seattle in league play came May 4, 2011, when they claimed a 2-1 win at RFK Stadium – their
only victory in five home matches vs. Seattle.

D.C. UNITED
D.C. United won for a second time in their last three games, defeating Sporting Kansas City 1-0 on Friday evening at
Children’s Mercy Park. United are in a tie for fifth place in the Eastern Conference with 16 points from 13 games.
LAST MATCH
 The game was twice delayed by weather, the start first pushed back 2-1/2 hours, then the match itself held up
for an additional hour at the halftime break.
 The game's lone goal came late. United and MLS debut Alhaji Kamara came off the bench as D.C.'s final
substitute in the 85th minute, and finished Taylor Kemp's cross just 33 seconds after coming on, giving the
visitors the full three points.
 United head coach Ben Olsen made four changes to his team that fell 1-0 to Philadelphia Union at Talen
Energy Stadium. Kofi Opare came into the back four for Steve Birnbaum, Jared Jeffrey and Fabian Espindola
came into the team to replace Patrick Nyarko and Alvaro Saborio, and Bill Hamid stepped in between the posts
in place of Travis Worra.
 D.C. UNITED (4-4-2): Bill Hamid - Sean Franklin, Kofi Opare, Bobby Boswell, Taylor Kemp - Nick DeLeon,
Jared Jeffrey, Marcelo Sarvas, Lamar Neagle (Alhaji Kamara 85) - Fabian Espindola (Rob Vincent 74), Luciano
Acosta (Julian Buscher 77).
TEAM NEWS
 United won for a second time in three matches with the victory against Sporting KC, also their first win this
season away from RFK Stadium in six road matches.

“The attitude was great and to get three points out of this after a long two days feels really good; I am not going
to lie. After some tough results, we asked the guys to dig in a little deeper, look inside themselves, and add a
little bit more character to find a way to win these games. Today was a good day to start the next two-thirds of
the season,” said United head coach Ben Olsen.
Alhaji Kamara scored the earliest goal of a player making his MLS debut, when he netted the only goal in the
win. Kamara came off the substitutes’ bench in the 85th minute and scored 33 seconds later – the fifth-fastest
of any goal for a player after coming onto the field (since 2011), and the 48th time a player has scored within a
minute of coming on as a substitute. No player has scored in the first minute of a start in their MLS debut.
“I think the team couldn’t be happier for him because they know what he has been going through. It is always
nice when you start on your debut and you get a goal,” said Olsen. “He still has a long way to go, but the one
thing about him is that you can say his physical presence is real. He knows what to do in the box and he is
going to be a nice addition.”
Bill Hamid was credited with three saves in making the shutout in his first appearance of the season. It was
Hamid’s first shutout since last Oct. 18, vs. the Chicago Fire.
“At the end of the game, I was kind of emotional because I’ve been off for a little bit, and I’ve been dying to get
back in. And for me to get three points in my first game back felt amazing, so after the game, it was a big
moment for all of us in the back line and the defensive midfielders,” said Hamid. “We definitely felt like it was a
long time coming. We haven’t had a good record on the road, so for us to lock it down and get a result on the
road is a good, positive thing moving forward.”
Said defender Taylor Kemp: “He’s a great goalkeeper – everyone in the league knows that – and he did tonight
what he’s done for the past several years, and that made him so good. And he came up with a huge save in the
87th minute tonight that I think a lot of goalies would have let in. He did what we’ve come to expect from him
and what he’s come to expect from himself."
It was a fifth shutout of the season for United. They have allowed just 14 goals through their first 13 games this
season, their average of 1.08 goals allowed per game the second-best defensive record in the league.
“They get themselves in the right spots and cut off angles for through balls and always man up when there’s a
cross coming in,” said Hamid. “It felt good to be back in there with them and to organize with them, and we
restricted a lot of their chances, so it was a good performance.”
Kofi Opare came into the back four for his second start of the season, his first since March 26, with Steve
Birmbaum away on international duty.
Jared Jeffrey made his first start since April 30, making a fifth consecutive appearance, coming into the center
of the midfield.
SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC
Seattle Sounders FC fell to their third consecutive loss, dropping a 2-1 decision to the New England Revolution on
Saturday evening at Gillette Stadium. Sounders FC are in ninth place in the Western Conference with 13 points from 12
games.
LAST MATCH
 Sounders FC jumped out to a lead in the seventh minute when homegrown product Aaron Kovar netted his first
professional goal, corralling a poor punch from Revs 'keeper Bobby Shuttleworth at the top of the box, bringing
the ball down to his right foot and slotting home inside the left post.
 The Revolution equalized in the 24th minute on a Lee Nguyen penalty kick. The game-winner then came in the
80th minute. Femi Hollinger-Janzen received a toe-poke pass from Lee Nguyen some 20 yards from goal, then
regained his balance before blasting a low strike through traffic inside Seattle goalkeeper Stefan Frei's left post.
 Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid made one change to the team that fell 1-0 to the Colorado Rapids at
CenturyLink Field. Herculez Gomez came into the team with Clint Dempsey away on international duty.
 SEATTLE SOUNDERS FC (4-3-2-1): Stefan Frei - Tyrone Mears, Brad Evans (Tony Alfaro 40), Zach Scott,
Joevin Jones - Osvaldo Alonso, Erik Friberg, Andreas Ivanschitz (Cristian Roldan 56) - Aaron Kovar, Herculez
Gomez (Darwin Jones 82) - Jordan Morris.
TEAM NEWS
 Sounders FC have lost three consecutive games for a second time this season, after the loss at the Revolution.
Sounders FC also dropped their first three games of the season March 6-19.
 The goal was the first after back-to-back shutouts at the attacking end for Sounders FC, snapping a 188-minute
goalless drought. Sounders FC have scored 11 goals in 12 matches this season, their average of 0.92 goals
per game the second-lowest average in MLS.
 “After we scored the goal, it seemed like we took our foot off the gas for some reason, and we weren’t playing
as aggressively as we did earlier in the game,” said Sounders FC head coach Sigi Schmid. “… I thought the
second half was pretty even until we really opened up towards the end. We had some chances, they ended up
scoring a goal where they just reacted quicker than we did.”

Aaron Kovar netted the Sounders FC goal, the first goal of his professional career, making his 18th league
appearance (eighth start) in his third MLS season.
“It was good, it might have also been his first full 90 minutes. It was good, he hits it with his opposite foot,
normally he is a lefty and likes to hit it with his left exclusively, but he is somebody that we need to start getting
goals from and from the rest of our flank players,” said Schmid. “We haven’t gotten anything from Herculez
[Gomez] yet, and we hadn’t gotten anything from Kovar, so it was good. It was good to see us get a goal from
there.”
Herculez Gomez came back into the starting lineup after coming off the substitutes’ bench in the Colorado
match, making his fifth start in the last six games.
Sounders FC were forced into a change on the backline when Brad Evans was forced off the field after 40
minutes following a clash of heads.
“It’s tough to see him go out. Hopefully, it’s not too serious and he’ll bounce back quickly. But, like I said, I think
Tony [Alfaro] was ready, which is good. It wasn’t an easy task for him,” said goalkeeper Stefan Frei. “We have
some depth and hopefully Chad [Marshall] will come back soon as well. I’m not too worried with our defensive
four. We have some depth that we can rely upon. So, we’ll have to keep on chipping away and somehow find
wins.”
Rookie Tony Alfaro, the club’s second-round SuperDraft selection out of Cal State-Dominguez Hills (No. 27
overall) came into the match for his MLS and Sounders FC debut.
“I thought he did well for a young kid getting thrown in his first MLS experience. He was thrown in without a real
warmup. I thought he was pretty solid and consistent. You can obviously see that he is very comfortable with
the ball and he is a good passer. I thought overall his defending was good,” Schmid said.
The penalty conceded by Sounders FC was their sixth of the season, most this year in MLS, and the fourth to
score, also the most this year in the league.
“Right now, we’re putting ourselves in positions where the opponent is getting lucky and scoring on us. Three
easy goals. Six out of 12 games, you’re essentially starting the game down one [or] zero [goals] because we’re
giving up PKs with at times not our fault. I think some questionable calls at times, but it still hurts us,” said Frei.

SOUNDERS FC WEEKLY NOTES
QUICK HITS: AT D.C. UNITED
• Sounders FC has posted a 6-2-2 mark against D.C. United since the 2009
season, including a 3-1-1 mark at RFK Stadium. The Rave Green’s lone away
loss came on May 4, 2011 in a 3-2 loss victory. Last season, Seattle has won
three consecutive matchups in the series and four of the past five.
• Sounders FC is set to play without forwards Clint Dempsey and Nelson Valdez, who are on international duty for Copa America Centenario. Dempsey is
representing the United States, while Valdez plays for his native Paraguay.
• D.C. United midfielder Lamar Neagle is from Federal Way, WA, which is located about 20 miles south of Seattle. Neagle played for Sounders FC in three
separate stints (2009, 2011, 2013-2015). He ranks fifth in club history with 116
MLS games played and fourth with 26 league goals.
• D.C. United has been shutout by Seattle in five consecutive matches and
six of its past seven. Overall, the Red and Black have scored nine goals in 10
matches against Seattle, while the Rave Green have netted 16 scoring tallies,
including nine in the second half.
• Wednesday’s match marks the second of a five-game stretch against Eastern
Conference opponents for the Rave Green. Seattle is 3-1-0 against the East
this season.
LAST MATCH REWIND: VS. NE
• Sounders FC is now 4-7-1 in the 2016 MLS regular season. With 13 points,
the Rave Green are currently in ninth place in the Western Conference. The
loss extends Seattle’s three-match losing streak.
• Seattle is now 4-5-2 all-time versus New England, with the Revs winning two
of the past three matchups in the series
.
• Saturday’s loss snapped Sounders FC’s three-match winning streak against
the Eastern Conference. Seattle’s next four MLS regular season fixtures are
against the East.
• Defender Tony Alfaro made his MLS debut when he came on for the injured
Brad Evans in the 40th minute. The Cal State Dominguez Hills product was the
club’s top selection in the 2016 MLS SuperDraft.
• Aaron Kovar scored his first MLS goal with a seventh-minute strike, making
the Stanford product just the third Homegrown Player in club history to record
a goal in league play (DeAndre Yedlin, Jordan Morris). It was Sounders FC’s
earliest goal of the season.
FIVE FULL-STADIUM MATCHES IN 2016
Seattle Sounders FC announced that it is opening the full capacity of CenturyLink Field for five select matches in 2016, including four clashes against
Western Conference rivals, as well as New York City FC’s first-ever visit to
Seattle. Additional upper-deck seating in the 300-level is being made available
for games against NYCFC (June 25), LA Galaxy (July 31), Portland Timbers
(August 21), Vancouver Whitecaps FC (September 17) and Real Salt Lake
(October 23). Single-match tickets for these contests and the Sounders FC
Five-Match Packs are available now via SoundersFC.com or by calling (877)
MLS-GOAL. Starting at $25 per seat, the five-match pack includes tickets to
each of the full-stadium fixtures for the best possible value.
By opening to full-stadium capacity for these select matches in 2016, Sounders FC continues to set the standard for soccer support in North America.
Since entering Major League soccer in 2009, the Rave Green and their fans
have led MLS in single-season attendance season and hold an active streak of
133 consecutive MLS sellouts, a league record.
Sounders FC has proven to be a dominant host when playing in front of larger
crowds on its home turf. With crowds surpassing 45,000 or more, Sounders
FC holds a record of 15-2-3, including postseason play. Of the five opponents
Sounders FC is set to face in this year’s full-stadium games, Vancouver is the
only one to record a win on the big stage at CenturyLink Field (2-2-0). Portland
(0-4-0), LA (0-3-2) and Real Salt Lake (0-2-0) are all winless in Seattle in front
of 45,000 or more, while NYCFC is set to play its first match on the Xbox Pitch
at CenturyLink Field.
DEMPSEY AND VALDEZ CALLED IN
Seattle Sounders FC forwards Clint Dempsey and Nelson Valdez have been
called into the United States and Paraguay National Teams, respectively, for
the 2016 Copa América Centenario.
Additionally, injured defender Román Torres has been called into Panama’s
squad as an honorary captain. The 2016 Copa América Centenario begins on
June 3 at 10 venues across the United States.
Defender Brad Evans and forward Jordan Morris were both included on Jurgen
Klinsmann’s 40-man preliminary roster, and remain as alternates that could potentially be added to the active U.S. Men’s National Team roster at a later date.
Defender Oniel Fisher is also an alternate for Jamaica after being named to
the Reggae Boyz preliminary roster, but was not selected for the final squad.
Seattle is one of 10 metropolitan areas selected to host matches during the
Copa América Centenario, which honors 100 years of the Copa América
tournament and runs from June 3-26 throughout the United States. CenturyLink Field is set to host two Group Stage matchups, beginning with Haiti vs.
Peru on June 4 and Argentina vs. Bolivia on June 14. CenturyLink Field is also
hosting a Quarterfinal match on June 16, with participants to be determined
after the Group Stage.
The U.S. and Paraguay are both participating in Group A, alongside Colombia and Costa Rica, while Torres’ Panama squad is in Group D and is set to
compete with Argentina, Chile and Bolivia. The top two sides in each group
advance to the Knockout Round.
SOUNDERS PREP FOR OPEN CUP
U.S. Soccer announced that Seattle Sounders FC is set to face the winner of
the Kitsap Pumas and Sacramento Republic FC matchup in the Fourth Round
of the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup. The match is slated to be played on
June 15 at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be held at Starfire Stadium, where Sounders
FC is 17-1-1 in 2009 in the tournament. Seattle’s opponent is being decided at
Sacramento Republic’s Bonney Field on June 1, with the USL side taking on
local PDL club Kitsap.
Season Ticket Members are receiving a presale opportunity to purchase
tickets on Friday, May 20. Additionally, a limited quantity of tickets are being
made available for purchase on Monday, May 23 through SoundersFC.com,
all Ticketmaster outlets or by calling 877-MLS-GOAL. To reserve the best
seats and to receive complete ticketing information for the 2016 season, visit
SoundersFC.com/Tickets.
Last year, the Rave Green fell by a score of 3-1 in an extra-time loss to the
Portland Timbers in the tournament’s Fourth Round at Starfire Stadium. The
Open Cup, which is the oldest continuous soccer competition in the United
States and the third-longest globally, is open to all United States Soccer
Federation (USSF) affiliated teams. Winner of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup
in 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014, Sounders FC is tied with the Chicago Fire for
the most titles in the tournament among MLS clubs. Maccabi Los Angeles and
Bethlehem Steel FC hold the record with five wins apiece, but both clubs are
no longer active. In 2011, Sounders FC became the first team since 1968 to
win three consecutive Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup championships.

SOUNDERS FC HISTORY
HEAD COACH SIGI SCHMID
Named the first Head Coach of Seattle Sounders FC
on December 16, 2008, Sigi Schmid is the winningest
coach in MLS history. Since 1999, Schmid’s teams have
won nine major titles, including two MLS Cups.
A two-time MLS Coach of the Year, Schmid has led
Sounders FC to seven-consecutive appearances in the
MLS Cup Playoffs, marking the second-longest active
streak while nearing the record for most consecutive
postseason appearances by an expansion team.
Schmid also guided Sounders FC to a record three-straight Lamar Hunt U.S.
Open Cup titles, becoming the first team in 42 years to win back-to-back
championships.
Schmid joined Sounders FC in its inaugural campaign after leading the Columbus Crew to its first MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield, earning MLS Coach
of the Year honors in 2008. From 1999 through 2004, Schmid’s L.A. Galaxy
teams won four major competitions: the 2002 MLS Cup and Supporters’ Shield,
the 2001 U.S. Open Cup and the 2001 CONCACAF Champions Cup. He was
voted the MLS Coach of the Year in his first season, 1999. Altogether, his Galaxy teams were 79-53-32 and reached the MLS Cup final four times, winning
three division crowns.
Schmid has twice served as the U.S. U-20 National Team head coach, most recently in 2005 at the FIFA World Championships. Schmid first forged a winning
tradition at his alma mater, UCLA. After serving as an assistant, he was elevated to head coach of the Bruins in 1980, beginning a 19-year run at the helm.
He claimed three national titles (1985, 1990, 1997) and was named national
coach of the year following the 1997 championship. His UCLA teams accumulated a record of 322-64-33. Schmid ranks No. 1 in MLS career victories (226)
and games coached (498). Overall, Schmid’s record in MLS is 226-160-112.
His combined postseason win total (26) is the second-highest in MLS history.
