Avid readers of the Shamrock News will recall that a year ago, we
reported that Joe and Linda Healey after 23 years had sold the Hurricane Bar. Now, we come to find that Joe and Linda are back in
possession of the premises and doing a land-office business. Emeralds, always willing to bend an elbow in the interests of conversation,
have accepted an invitation from the Healeys to visit their friendly
confines and partake of the craic on Thursday, January 17.

The Hurricane Bar and Grill, located at 365 N. Royal Poinciana
Boulevard, Miami Springs, (305-884-5077). It is easy to see why this
neighborhood bar has become a local cultural icon . The Healeys always provide generous hors d’oeuvres and a wide variety of beverages ( beer and wine only) are available at reasonable prices. Directions after exiting the Palmetto Xway 836/Okeechobee Rd Interchange: drive southeast on W. Okeechobee Rd. toward 74th for 2
miles. Turn right at Hialeah Dr. over the bridge. At the traffic circle,
take the first right onto N. Royal Poinciana Boulevard and look for
the Hurricane Bar on your right .

The St. Patrick’s Day Committee, Inc
Charlie Davis has announced that that the 35th Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival has been cancelled because there were so
few volunteers to work.
The Committee is a 501c (3) under IRS rules and a Florida
corporation. Election of officers will be held in the coming
months; current officers are: Charlie Davis, John Doherty, Clodagh Michel and Rosemary Hart.
We want to thank Charlie, John, Clodagh, Ed and Rosemary
Hart, Judi Tierney Sherry, Bill O’Brien, C.L. Conroy, Dan and
Charlie Davis, President
St. Patrick’s Day Committee
Dolores Fitzgerald, Sean Glynn, Oliver and Mary Ann Kerr, Melissa Davis, Marge Hartnett RIP, Sean Ferrell, Jan Paris, Bill Gregory, Sylvia Breton, Louise Sekman, Bob
Friedlander, Kassie Doyle and Skip Russell.
Thanks to all the sponsors, vendors and the City of Coral Gables.
The Editors
In the Absence of our St. Patrick’s Day Festival, What is Our Alternative?
The cancellation of the Festival should not have come as a shock to the general membership,
in view of the multiple requests from the St. Pat’s Committee for aid and participation which
unfortunately met with little response. Further, the Emerald Society does not exercise direct
control over the Festival; but rather control is in the hands of the St.Patrick’s Day Committee,
which has been struggling through these past years and had become increasingly discouraged;
while there had been some ideas and some volunteers, these were not enough.
I want to work on another option, possibly marching in the Ft. Lauderdale St. Patrick’s Day
Parade on March 9. The Ft. Lauderdale Parade is Saturday March 9, 2013 on Las Olas Boulevard in Ft. Lauderdale. Mary Gerhardt has investigated the applications to join and walk in the
Parade, to sponsor a float, to enter an ad, to participate in the festival after. We have had some
discussion regarding possible rental of a bus (or buses) from Miami to Ft Lauderdale for Emerald members who want to go to the parade. Mary Gerhardt checked prices with Horizon
Coach Lines – 6 hours (11 am – 5) costs $550 + tip for 55 passengers.
I am looking for you members to call and tell me whether and how involved the Emerald Society wants to be in the Ft. Lauderdale Parade. Will you walk in the Parade? Call
me at 305 858 1992 or email me at [email protected]. This will be decided at the
Board meeting of February 7. Slainte!

Poetry Corner
Richard Welch, Emerald Director, is
sharing a sonnet he has composed
which honors his grandfather Patrick J “Mac”
McCarthy.
Born in the south of Ireland in 1908, Mac immigrated to America and became a pioneering leader
in Boston’s leather industry and raised a wonderful family in the Savin Hill section of Boston. Mac
was a role model for Richard’s father. One of
Richard’s fondest childhood memories was watching the Tall Ships come into Boston Harbor for
the Bicentennial Celebration from the top of
Mac’s building on July 4, 1976.

Patrick J. McCarthy Sonnet
“Mac”
Eight years old during the Easter Rising,
Mac's family had already left Ireland, not surprising.
The McCarthys fled British rule in West Cork,
Sailing the Atlantic for Boston, not New York.
Christmas in Ireland
A determined young man, finding his way.
Playing handball, even working at Fenway.
Cut sole merchant, became industry's bellwether,
Mac strongly built-up McCarthy Sole & Leather.
Eight years old during Bicentennial year,
My family watched from Mac's rooftop tier.
In Boston Harbor, the Tall Ships sailed,
Freedom from British rule, clearly prevailed.
Like a Rose reminds us of more than a bouquet,
Mac lived with gritty Irish spirit, "His Way"
