“Ten years ago, we
came into this market with no name
recognition and we
knew we had to do
something to let
people know we were here and to
start building a brand. Ingram’s
comes to us with ideas and advertising and sponsorship opportunities that others don’t match, and
their programs, like 40 Under Forty or CEOpen, validate our belief
that we’re dealing with the right
organization to help us build our
brand in the marketplace.”
Jeff Spencer, VP, Holmes Murphy
& Assoc. Overland Park, Kan.
“Blue Cross and Blue
Shield of Kansas City
congratulates Ingram’s
Magazine on 40 years
of being an outstanding partner to the
business community. By covering
both national and local trends in
business and convening local players to share sharp insights and
perspective, Ingram’s distinguishes itself by offering readers clarity
on complex topics—in particular,
the coverage of development in the
healthcare sector is a must read.
Ingram’s was also quick to recognize the importance of health and
wellness to the success of businesses both from financial and
workforce effectiveness perspectives, and we have been proud to
sponsor and support participants
in the Fittest Execs and Companies Challenge. At Blue KC, we are
proud to call Ingram’s Magazine a
partner and appreciate the support this publication provides to
Kansas City. Here’s to many more
years of healthy growth and prosperity.”

A Special Report
Veterans in the Work Force
With the EPA’s regulatory bomb on U.S. utilities that rely on coal to
generate electricity, the cost of doing business here is headed up.
Congressional bills that run past 1,000
pages, and the legislative processes that
produce them—as with the Affordable Care
Act and the Dodd-Frank financial reforms—
failed to generate much outrage with the
voting public in recent years, despite ample
evidence to demonstrate that neither had
achieved its stated goals.
Perhaps it was only a matter of timebefore we’d see four-figure administrative
actions. The most recent of those is the
Clean Power Plan, rolled out in early August
at an impressive 1,560 pages, with thousands of pages to follow. Combined with
thousands of pages of additional guidance
still to come, it will do for America’s energy
sector, critics say, precisely what ACA did for
health care expenditures and Dodd-Frank
did for compliance costs at community banks.

Only this time, anyone whose electricity comes from burning coal will
be able to see the effects on the monthly utility bill.
“It will be, by far, the most expensive compliance policy the EPA has ever
undertaken,” cautions Andrew Ferris, director of electric supply planning for
the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities. At $311.5 million in 2014 revenues,
the Wyandotte County-based municipal utility is but a fraction of the size of
investor-owned utilities like Western Resources, parent of Kansas City Power
& Light, or Westar Energy in Topeka.
But the BPU will more acutely feel the effects of new federal restrictions
because it lacks the economies of scale enjoyed by the larger utilities. The
effect would be multiplied within this region because the utility not only produces power for 63,000 customers in the county, but hundreds of thousands
more who rely on it to power municipal water systems in the region, including
Johnson County’s massive Water One.
At this point, the BPU has no solid estimates on what the costs of CPP
compliance will be, Ferris says. An hour to the west, Westar’s John Bridson
has a more forceful opinion about what the CPP will impose on consumers
and businesses: “I think the impact to the people of Kansas is going to be
big, and that concerns us because we’re worried about those families’ ability

Competition makes us better at what we do. That’s why Ingram’s works so hard to identify and quantify outstanding performance.
For 31 years, for example, our Corporate Report 100 competition, which ranks the 100 fastest-growing companies headquartered in the KC region, has been the gold standard for honoring fast-growth companies, and Ingram’s Best of Business Kansas City, in
its 28th year, is a must-read for those who know and appreciate quality products and services. Partnering with Ingram’s positions
your organization as a respected authority in business and an affiliate of a reputable and anticipated annual competition and event.

By Dennis Boone
In some ways, it is the typical small-business succession story:
After a decade of building a start-up with a relative handful of employees into a leader in its field with more than 150 on the payroll,
the chief executive is ready to turn the reins over to the next generation of leadership. So he does his diligence, brings on board someone prepared to take the organization to even further heights, and
prepares to step out of the limelight.
By Dennis Boone
On one hand, today’s investor must feel like a kid
in a candy store, eyes wide open with all the potential
choices—individual stocks, bonds, mutual funds,
exchange-traded funds, precious metals, consumable
commodities, energy plays, angel and venture-capital
possibilities . . .
The complexity and inter-connectedness of those
choices is staggering, and only the stout of heart would
risk venturing into some of those combat zones without
a small army of trusted advisers as back-up. And the
task for all is no easier as mid-2015 approaches, where
we find that:
 The Dow Jones Industrial Average isn’t far off
its historical high of 18,312.39 and hasn’t had a major
correction in six years.
 10-year treasuries are still throwing off yields of
roughly 2.4 percent and have only cracked the 3 percent
mark on two trading days in the past four years.
 Gold is down nearly 40 percent from a 2011 high.
 Oil is less than half its price a year ago, taking
the prices of other energy sources down with it.
 And grain commodities are taking a beating.
Those are just a few of the mileposts along the
current investment highway. What to make of them?
Ingram’s turned to professionals from a wide range of
investment disciplines for some guidance, and their
answers could prove useful for those taking mid-year
stock of their portfolios.

Armed Forces Bank recently sponsored—and hosted—the first ever Military Industry Outlook
forum in partnership with Ingram’s Magazine. As I look forward, it is clear that the military
will continue to be a core segment of the DFC family of banks. Understanding the impact of
the military in the communities we serve and the issues they are facing are important if we
are to truly “know our customer”.
I encourage you to read this summary of the forum. Like me, I’m sure you will find it insightful
and beneficial as we seek to meet the financial needs of these heroes.
Thanks for all you do.

Paul Holewinski

All advertisements are published for the benefit of the applicable Advertiser and
Agency, and each are jointly and severally liable for all charges. Publisher shall not
be liable for failure to publish or distribute all or any part of the publication because
of labor disputes, accident, fire, Acts of God, or any other circumstances beyond the
Publisher’s control. Further, Publisher shall not be liable for damages if for any reason
he fails to publish an advertisement. Upon this situation, Publisher agrees to fulfill
insertion in the next desired issue.
All advertisements are accepted and published upon the representation that
the Agency and/or Advertiser is authorized to publish the entire contents and
subject matter thereof. In consideration of Publisher’s acceptance of such ad for
publication, Agency and/or Advertiser will indemnify and save Publisher harmless from and against any loss or expense arising out of publication of such ads,
including without limitation to reasonable attorney’s fees resulting from claims or suits
based upon the contents, subject matter or for libel, violation of privacy, plagiarism and copyright infringements.
No conditions, oral or printed in the contract, order, copy instructions or elsewhere, which conflict with Publisher’s policies as set forth in Rate Card #25, will be
binding on the Publisher. Jurisdiction for any litigation ensuing from advertising placed
in the publication shall properly lie in Jackson County, MO, with Advertiser bearing
the cost of reasonable attorney’s fees in the event of unpaid invoice collection.

Payment is due within 30 days of invoice date. By paying within 30 days from the
date of invoice, you avoid the charge of 1.75% per month that we must otherwise charge
as interest. First time advertisers are to pre-pay their first insertion. Agencies should
note, too, that we cannot honor commission on invoices that are 60 days or older—
we encourage prompt payment. By honoring the terms of the Ad Agreement and our
policy, the company is assured of maintaining its negotiated rates.

to see Ingram’s branching heavily into new media channels,
