When friends asked me about “Crossing Delancey”, I shrugged and said something along the lines of: “Oh, it’s just a little romantic comedy.” They nodded knowingly, and that was all that had to be said. But the more I worked on this play leading up to auditions, the more I realized that it does the play an injustice to treat it as a “nice little romantic comedy.” This is not a play about true love. We don’t know where the two lovebirds go after this play. Do they get married? Is it two months before they discover they want to strangle each other? We don’t know! But it doesn’t matter. Of course we want to see them happy, but isn’t it enough that they’re happy at the end of this play? I posit that this should be enough. That at the end of the play, in this moment, they are happy about being together. And why? Because they each trekked outside of their comfort zones, and they each took a chance. And it leads to happiness, regardless of the duration. But more importantly, the opportunity to take chances that can lead to happiness can happen at ANY time in ANY place! So, while the play is set in 1985 New York, we chose to tell our story on a nearly bare stage that only suggests the places that our characters occupy. We invite you to see Hannah’s bench in the park, and the bookstore in which Izzy has resigned herself to daydreams, and Bubbie’s kitchen, warm with the scent of sweet kugel. Television leaves nothing to the imagination. Thankfully, you’re in a theater! Flex those muscles of imagination and join us as we tell a sweet little story about taking chances. Thank you for coming.
