EDITORIAL
Caros amigos,
Semanalmente, nos reunimos através desta publicação eletrônica, para colocarmos nosso papo em
dia e sabermos das novidades.
Quando mencionamos que esta publicação tem o objetivo de ser realmente uma conversa de mão
dupla, entre redatores, editores e leitores; reafirmamos que esta interação se tornará sempre maior
e mais efetiva, na medida em que os senhores leitores nos fornecerem a sua contrapartida, visto que
nós do lado de cá das edições, estaremos sempre de braços abertos a este diálogo.
Mas, ocorre que a grande maioria dos leitores, infelizmente, não apresentam este feed back, não nos
retornam suas opiniões, não nos informam aquilo com que concordam e aquilo do qual discordam.
Meus amigos, é impossível se ter uma conversa, onde somente um dos lados fala e o outro fica calado
ouvindo sem se manifestar.
É impossível, para nos, redatores e editores, conseguirmos realizar um boletim que seja do agrado
dos senhores, se os senhores não vierem nos dizer o que realmente desejam, para que nós possamos
verificar se temos a condição de fornecer este material que atenda aos anseios de todos.
Ás vezes, pode ser que algumas das sugestões recebidas, nos sejam impossíveis de realizar, mas
mesmo assim poderemos realizar a tentativa de adequá-las ás nossas condições de ação e atender,
mesmo que parcialmente o gosto dos leitores.
Mas, se os leitores não manifestam os seus desejos, teremos de realizar o nosso trabalho, nos
apegando aquilo que julgamos seja o ideal e adequado, e não ao que seria realmente o desejo dos
que nos lêem.
Por isso, voltamos novamente a bater na mesma tecla de solicitar as informações de rotor no senhores,
nos informando aquilo que gostaram e aquilo que não gostaram nesta nossa edição.
Quando reafirmamos esta condição, não estamos apresentando apenas uma frase demagógica, com
o intuito de parecermos agradáveis aos que nos lêem, mas sim mostrarmos que estamos realmente
desejosos em saber a opinião real dos nosso leitores, para darmos uma direção adequada ás edições
deste nosso boletim.
Mas, mudando de “ pau para pedra”, desejamos também lembrar de novas informações interessantes
que estão aparecendo na atualidade do nosso amado mundo de escutar rádio.
Uma delas é o anuncio da confirmação da próxima Fenarcom 2010, que deverá ocorrer entre os
dias 23 a 25 de julho de 2010. Esta feira é um evento que todo dexista que se presa deve participar,
pela grandiosidade da realização, pela possibilidade de agregação e participação conjunta com
os amigos e pela grande carga de informações e novidades que ela apresenta. É um evento
realmente imperdível.
Um outro fato digno de registro, é o anuncio do próximo “ Dia da Rádio Santa Helena” , que deverá
ser realizado no próximo dia 14 de novembro e que nesta mesma edição damos todos os detalhes da
realização, que sempre é esperada pela população dexista de todo o mundo.
Bem, demos nosso recado por hoje e encerramos por aqui, desejando que todos tenham muita
satisfação em lerem mais esta edição do boletim @tividade DX, e não se esqueçam de nos enviarem

Existe uma lei universal que informa que na natureza, nada se cria, nada se perde; tudo se transforma.
Hoje, estamos passando por mais uma destas fases, uma transformação, no intuito de melhor servir os nosso leitores.
Á partir desta edição, o nosso boletim eletrônico @tividade DX, terá uma composição mais versátil, mais leve, de maneira a
proporcionar aos leitores, um grau maior de informação, não mais voltado com grande exclusividade ás Ondas Tropicais apenas,
como vinha ocorrendo ultimamente, mas se preocupando em versar sobre os mais diversos campos da recepção de rádio.
E para iniciar esta nova fase, apresentamos alguns artigos, atuais, de excelente conteúdo, tratando do mundo das Ondas
Médias, que erroneamente costuma ser chamado de AM.
Muito provavelmente, na próxima edição estaremos com um nome novo para esta coluna.

O fim do Rádio AM ?

Sabemos que um meteoro colidiu com a Terra a milhares de anos e deu fim aos
seres vivos que reinavam em nosso planeta, nesta colisão foram-se embora os
Dinossauros.
O avanço tecnológico e digital é comparado a um meteoro que também matou
muitos importantes e grandes dinossauros históricos, com a chegada da
tecnologia, foram embora as máquinas de escrever, os discos em vinil e as
câmeras fotográficas que usavam os filmes negativos em 24 e 36 poses.
Agora ao que tudo indica, também o rádio AM está com os dias contados, a tecnologia tem sido letal, e está aos
poucos matando a amplitude modulada que faz parte da nossa história radiofônica e que também ensinou gerações
amar e ouvir rádio.
Embora a programação das grandes emissoras AM sejam grandemente de melhor qualidade que as emissoras em FM, o
rádio AM tem se tornado obsoleto e de pouca audiência, emissoras renomadas e tradicionais em nosso país como rádio
Tupi do Rio de Janeiro, Gaúcha e Guaíba de Porto Alegre de alcance continental, tem em sua maioria, ouvintes com mais
de 30 anos. Pessoas de até 29 anos, ouvem tão somente as emissoras em FM, segundo pesquisas, a audiência das
emissoras em amplitude modulada vem caindo gradativamente na medida que vai morrendo a geração com mais de 30
anos. Futuramente deixará de ser interessante manter essas emissoras no ar, uma vez que vem perdendo seu espaço.
Aos poucos vamos dando conta do fim do rádio AM e de suas emissoras, os modernos aparelhos eletrônicos trazem
somente a opção FM. Se analisarmos o fato, é uma pena, pois quem conhece a história e o perfil da programação do rádio
AM, sabe que a qualidade de informação e a cultura oferecida é muito melhor que o estilo FM que tem um perfil muito mais
musical que informativo.
A gerações nascidas até os anos 70 e 80 lembram como as grandes emissoras AM do País eram presentes em nossas
casas, e que agora passam despercebidas, poucos são os que ligam durante a noite um rádio em AM para ouvir o que ele
tem a oferecer. O meteoro chamado tecnologia digital tem sufocado esses inefáveis dinossauros que tanto ofertou e ainda
ofertam entretenimento, informação e cultura a poucos privilegiados.
Vai aqui a nossa dica, querem prover-se de informação, descontração e diversão, vai aqui a nossa dica, durante a noite a
partir das 20:00 horas ou no decorrer de toda madrugada, sintonize seu rádio no AM, nas freqüência 600 ou 1280 kilohertz,
sinta a diferença, ouçam, notem quão importante e inteligente dinossauro a tecnologia tem sufocado.

Carioca gosta muito de ouvir rádio. Na pesquisa do Ibope sobre a audiência das rádios brasileiras rádios cariocas lideram
tanto na FM quanto na AM.
Na FM lidera a FM O Dia e na AM lideram Globo e Tupi do Rio. Porque essa liderança? Na FM acho que é pelo falo do
carioca ser um povo muito musical e gostar muito de dançar, mais que o paulista.
Na AM talvez a razão seja mais histórica e tenha raízes na Rádio Nacional que funciona até hoje na Praça Mauá.
Era uma potência do rádio, principalmente antes da TV. Isso pode ter criado um hábito que foi sendo difundido de
geração em geração.

Uma breve história do Rádio AM no Brasil

1893 - O padre, cientista e engenheiro gaúcho Roberto Landell de Moura testa a primeira transmissão de fala por ondas
eletromagnéticas, sem fio. Graças a ele, a Marinha brasileira realizou, em 01 de março de 1905, diversos testes de
mensagens telegráficas no encouraçado Aquidaban.
Todavia, o Primeiro Mundo reconhece o cientista Guglielmo Marconi como o “descobridor do rádio”.
Marconi, natural de Bolonha, Itália, realizou em 1895 testes de transmissão de sinais sem fio pela distância de 400 metros
e depois pela distância de dois quilômetros. Ele também descobriu o princípio do funcionamento da antena. Em 1896
Marconi adquiriu a patente da invenção do rádio, enquanto Landell só conseguiria obter para si a patente em1900. Marconi,
em 1899, concebeu a radiotelegrafia através de uma mensagem de socorro transmitida pelo Atlântico. Nesse evento se
populariza a sigla S. O. S. - save our souls, “salvem nossas almas” em português - , em todo o mundo, mesmo em países
que não falam a língua inglesa que concebeu a sigla.
Essa polêmica da invenção do rádio se compara à da invenção do avião, no início do século XX, em que o Primeiro Mundo
credita aos irmãos Wright, dos EUA, a invenção do veículo aéreo, embora tenha sido o mineiro Alberto Santos Dumont
seu pioneiro (os Wright não registraram imagens de suas experiências de vôo, enquanto Dumont realizou testes com seu
14-Bis diante de multidões em Paris, França, em 1906).
1919-1923 - Outra polêmica envolve o surgimento da primeira emissora de rádio no Brasil. Oficialmente se credita à Rádio
Sociedade do Rio de Janeiro (hoje Rádio MEC), do então Distrito Federal (Rio de Janeiro), o pioneirismo, em 1923. Mas a
Rádio Clube de Pernambuco (até hoje no ar e que chegou a ser propriedade de Assis Chateaubriand, a exemplo da Super
Rádio Tupi), de Recife, quatro anos antes já realizou suas primeiras transmissões radiofônicas.
Em 1922, em caráter experimental, a Rádio Sociedade do Rio de Janeiro, que não havia sido inaugurada ainda,
transmitiu, em razão dos 100 anos da Independência do Brasil em 07 de setembro, o discurso do então Presidente da
República, Epitácio Pessoa.
O idealizador da Rádio Sociedade do Rio de Janeiro foi Edgard Roquete Pinto, considerado o “pai do rádio brasileiro”.
Mesmo não sendo exatamente o pioneiro, considerando a Rádio Clube de Pernambuco como a primeira rádio do país,
Roquete Pinto teve sua prestigiada importância histórica em prol da comunicação e educação no rádio. Em homenagem a
ele, foi criada uma fundação com o seu nome, que existe até hoje.
Anos 20 - Nessa época, o rádio funcionava sem fins comerciais. Não havia ainda a chamada publicidade no rádio, que só
viria em 1927 e ganharia fôlego nos anos 30. Antes disso, haviam as chamadas “rádios clubes” ou “rádios sociedades”, ou
seja, rádios com programação elitista e raio de irradiação limitado, organizadas por pessoas da alta burguesia, que além
de sustentarem as emissoras, forneciam suas coleções de discos, geralmente de música clássica.
Este detalhe foi resgatado de alguma forma pela Rádio Fluminense FM de Niterói, entre 1982 e 1985, pois sua programação
rock era proveniente de discos pertencentes a seus próprios produtores (uma rádio hoje em dia funciona com acervos
impessoais fornecidos pelas gravadoras), colecionadores assumidos de discos.
1936 - Surge a Rádio Nacional, PRK-30, no Rio de Janeiro. Ela se tornaria um marco na história do rádio, com seus
programas de auditório, suas comédias e suas radionovelas. Entre o final dos anos 30 e a primeira metade dos anos 50
a Nacional seria uma das líderes de audiência do rádio brasileiro, exportando sua programação, gravada e dias depois
transmitida, em outras cidades brasileiras.
Nessa época as pessoas poderiam ir para os estúdios das rádios, verdadeiros teatros, para assistir ao vivo à programação
realizada. Era época de grandes emoções, em que as pessoas podiam ver pessoalmente os comunicadores em ação.
1938 - Surge a Rádio Globo do Rio de Janeiro, que décadas depois seria a rádio AM mais popular do país, renovando o
fôlego do rádio que havia sido abalado com o surgimento da televisão. É dessa época a vinheta de “O Globo no ar”, até
hoje utilizada tanto pela Globo AM do Rio de Janeiro como a sua similar de São Paulo.
Nesta mesma época, o Estado Novo, instaurado no ano anterior, começava a esboçar uma estratégia de cativação
populista da população, e a música brasileira dominante no período, como as marchinhas de carnaval, foram estimuladas
no ufanismo do governo de Getúlio Vargas entre o final dos anos 30 e começo dos anos 40.
Ainda em 1938, é realizada a primeira transmissão esportiva em rede nacional de rádio. Ela foi realizada durante a Copa
de 1938, na Rádio Clube do Brasil (então DF), narrada por Leonardo Gagliano Neto.
Década de 40 - Mas a música brasileira não se limitava às marchinhas, que tiveram seus ídolos indiscutíveis, vide a
famosa “rivalidade” das cantoras Emilinha Borba e Marlene. Mesmo a música regional foi bastante difundida pelo rádio, e
aqui se destacam programas como os de Ary Barroso, que antes de brilhar na Rádio Nacional era insólito locutor esportivo
da Rádio Cruzeiro do Sul (do então DF), que tocava gaita quando narrava os gols e se tornou célebre autor de inúmeras
canções como “Canta, Brasil” e “Aquarela do Brasil” (que na opinião de muitos deveria ser adotada como Hino Nacional
Brasileiro, em substituição ao atual), e o de Luiz Gonzaga, célebre cantor e compositor de baião, autor de clássicos como
“Asa Branca”, que fazia programas de música regional.
Em 1939, outro músico é responsável pelo primeiro programa de auditório do rádio brasileiro. Era Almirante, pseudônimo
de Henrique Foréis Domingues, compositor e cantor que era vocalista do grupo O Bando dos Tangarás (que, curiosamente,
gravaram o primeiro vídeoclipe brasileiro que se tem conhecimento, em 1929, não com este nome adotado na era MTV),
no qual integravam Noel Rosa e João de Barro (único sobrevivente do grupo, conhecido também como Braguinha, que
entre muitas obras, fez a letra de “Carinhoso”, canção originalmente instrumental de Pixinguinha). O programa era “Caixa
de Perguntas” e foi ao ar na Rádio Nacional.
Década de 40 - Em 1941, surge o Repórter Esso, patrocinado pela famosa companhia norte-americana de combustíveis,
que lhe emprestava o nome. As notícias eram redigidas pela United Press International, e traduzidas para o português pela
equipe do informativo. Era o principal veículo de informação sobre os fatos internacionais, sobretudo a Segunda Guerra
Mundial e a Guerra do Vietnam.
O programa chegou a ter sua versão televisiva, que teve entre os apresentadores o mesmo locutor da versão radiofônica,
o gaúcho Heron Domingues. Heron foi considerado um dos melhores locutores noticiaristas da história, e faleceu aos 50
anos, em 1974, depois de anunciar uma notícia na televisão, quando sofreu um enfarte.
Um dos últimos apresentadores do Repórter Esso, que locucionou as últimas transmissões radiofônicas do programa em
1968, o comunicador Roberto Figueiredo se tornou, duas décadas depois, um dos comunicadores de sucesso no rádio
carioca, com passagens pela Super Rádio Tupi e Rádio Globo do Rio de Janeiro.
No final dos anos 40, a Rádio Record de São Paulo faz uma brincadeira com os ouvintes. Era primeiro de abril e o narrador
esportivo Geraldo José de Almeida narra uma partida entre o time de São Paulo com um time europeu, realizada naquele
continente. O clube paulista perde por 7 a 0. No dia seguinte, a emissora desfaz a farsa: o jogo nem sequer aconteceu.
Mas foi um grande susto para os torcedores sãopaulinos, isso foi.
Década de 50 - Surge a televisão e o rádio é obrigado a se transformar. Já se falava na ameaça de extinção do veículo
rádio, o que não ocorreu. Aos poucos o formato dos programas de auditório e das radionovelas migra do rádio para a TV.
A pioneira emissora de TV foi a Tupi de São Paulo.
Surgem as primeiras transmissões de radiojornalismo e as transmissões esportivas, que apareceram nos anos 30, se
multiplicam e ganham mais popularidade. A Rádio Continental de São Paulo é uma das pioneiras na reportagem de rua.
Um dos pioneiros repórteres de rua do Brasil era conhecido como Tico-Tico, que nos anos 50 garantia credibilidade e
entretenimento com sua inteligência e humor. Era habilidoso na busca de informações, encarando até viagem em navio.
Tico-Tico se destacava mais que seus entrevistados, não por atrapalhar a resposta deles (como infelizmente fazem alguns
apresentadores de tevê atualmente), mas pelo seu talento peculiar.
Surgem neste período as rádios Bandeirantes AM e Panamericana AM (que em 1966 passaria a se chamar
Jovem Pan AM e, a partir de 1976, Jovem Pan 1, para diferenciar da emissora FM, chamada Jovem Pan 2,
dedicada à música pop).
Em 1955 surge a primeira transmissão experimental de rádio FM, pela Rádio Imprensa, no Rio de Janeiro, extinta no fim
de dezembro de 2000. Sua introdutora foi a empresária Anna Khoury, que havia fundado a Rádio Eldorado AM no Rio de
Janeiro e se desligou desta emissora por divergir do grupo de Roberto Marinho (jornal O Globo), que adquiriu a emissora.
A transmissão da Imprensa FM se reduzia às instalações da emissora, constituindo-se de uma frequência de onda que
ligava os transmissores ao estúdio da emissora, similar a de uma linha telefônica privativa.
A Imprensa FM, que ampliou suas transmissões a partir dos anos 60, tinha sua programação sem objetivos comerciais,
com música e informação. Seu perfil era light, com algumas inclinações populares, porém sem aderir ao refinamento
grosseiro do pop baba romântico nem à baixaria reinante na mídia, e nos últimos anos abrigava alguns programas de rock.
A Imprensa foi extinta na virada de 2000 para 2001, quando passou a ser a nova Jovem Pan Rio.
Década de 60 - O rádio AM assume as caraterísticas atuais. No lugar dos programas de auditório, aparecem programas de
variedades comandados por locutores de boa voz e excelente estilo comunicativo. Haroldo de Andrade, locutor até hoje na
ativa na Rádio Globo AM (RJ), se torna o destaque.
Se popularizam os programas esportivos e os policiais - destaque para “Cidade contra o crime”, da Super Rádio Tupi,
apresentado por Samuel Correia, falecido em 1996 - e, num outro segmento, surgem as AMs de hit-parade, antecipando o
formato “adulto contemporâneo” das FMs. A Rádio Tamoio AM, do Rio de Janeiro, era uma delas.
Outra emissora AM, também do Rio de Janeiro, se tornava um marco do gênero, a Rádio Mundial AM, do Sistema Globo de
Rádio, que em seus quadros tinha o lendário DJ Big Boy, depois repórter do jornal “Hoje” (Rede Globo) e coordenador da
Eldo Pop FM, rádio de rock dos anos 70. Big Boy faleceu de ataque cardíaco com apenas 32 anos, em 1977, mas depois
de dar sua forte contribuição em prol da divulgação da música norte-americana no Brasil.
Durante a época do golpe militar de 1964, que derruba o presidente João Goulart, diversas rádios do país tentam conclamar
o povo brasileiro a se manifestar contra o regime. Entre 1964 e 1968 há diversas tentativas de contestação do regime, que
no entanto se fortaleceria com o Ato Institucional Nº 5, anos depois.
A Jovem Guarda encontrava no rádio AM um espaço complementar ao da TV (vide o famoso programa que batizou o
movimento e era transmitido pela TV Record, apresentado pelo cantor Roberto Carlos), e o programa do compositor,
empresário e jornalista Carlos Imperial, “Hoje é dia de rock” (apesar do título, sabe-se que a Jovem Guarda era mais pop
do que rock, e este estava na mesma época mais audacioso do que imaginavam os jovens brasileiros em sua maioria), se
tornava um grande sucesso de audiência. Era o rádio AM em seus momentos de “rádio jovem”, algo que causa estranheza
nos adolescentes da década de 90.
O fenômeno da Jovem Guarda existia desde 1959, quando foram lançados os sucessos “Banho de Lua” e “Estúpido
Cupido”, na voz de Cely Campello. Só não tinha este nome. No ano seguinte, nomes como Renato & Seus Blue Caps,
Demétrius e Sérgio Murilo apareciam fazendo o mesmo tipo de som, uma leitura brasileira do rock dos anos 50, com forte
influência da música jovem italiana, sucesso entre os anos 50 e 60. Foi preciso a suspensão das transmissões esportivas
da TV Record, em 1964, para ser criado um programa que batizaria e consagraria o gênero: “Jovem Guarda”, apresentado
pelo ídolo Roberto Carlos. Era um estilo ingênuo e conservador, comparado com o rock que era feito nos EUA e Reino
Unido, às vésperas do psicodelismo, mas até para ser contestado pelos fãs mais exigentes de rock a Jovem Guarda teve
sua razão de ser.
1969 - O Ministério das Comunicações havia surgido em 25 de fevereiro de 1967. Com a ditadura militar planejando
um grande esquema de censura e manipulação ideológica, o rádio AM é incluído entre as instituições e pessoas físicas
consideradas “subversivas”.
Depois de uma reunião do presidente Arthur da Costa e Silva com generais e ministros, em 13 de dezembro de 1968, foi
instituído o Ato Institucional Nº 5, que determinava censura total à imprensa e revogava as punições ao abuso de poder das
autoridades policiais e militares. O livro “1968: o ano que ainda não acabou”, de Zuenir Ventura, contém um relato detalhado
sobre as reuniões que resultaram neste ato institucional que durou dez anos e custou até a vida de muita gente.
Na mesma época do AI-5, o governo Costa e Silva investiu no surgimento do rádio FM, que em regiões mais
desenvolvidas (capitais do Sul e Sudeste) seguia o formato musical sisudo e tocando musak (a chamada música
ambiente, orquestrada mas sem compromissos eruditos), música romântica e música clássica, algo como uma
linhagem ortodoxa do “adulto contemporâneo” (a trinca Ray Conniff, Bee Gees e Filarmônica de Londres, só para
citar três exemplos dessas tendências). Nas outras regiões, as FMs passavam clones de programação de rádio AM
nos horários de pico e nas horas vagas tocavam música popular e artistas oriundos da Jovem Guarda, que já eram
tidos como “caretas” pelos jovens da época.
Anos 70 - O rádio AM, que era tido como “subversivo” em 1969, nos anos posteriores a 1974, quando a ditadura se afrouxou,
através do governo Ernesto Geisel, passou a ser considerado como o rádio de “brega”. Apesar disso, sua popularidade e
credibilidade continuavam intatas e a juventude ainda ouvia as emissoras AM.
Em 1970, o locutor Edmo Zarife (falecido em 1999, quando pertencia ao quadro de locutores da Globo AM / RJ)
gravou a célebre vinheta “Brasil”, que até hoje é usada quando o Brasil vence em qualquer modalidade esportiva, seja
futebol, tênis, Fórmula Um, vôlei, etc.. A princípio a vinheta era usada apenas para a Copa do Mundo do México, mas
imediatamente ela se popularizou.
Locutores como Paulo Giovani, Paulo Barbosa e Paulo Lopes se tornariam os “paulos” de grande prestígio do rádio AM.
Desses três, só o primeiro não atua mais no rádio, trabalhando hoje como publicitário e empresário, mas mesmo assim
sendo uma grande referência do rádio AM até hoje.
Nessa época se destacava também a então repórter do programa “Fantástico” (Rede Globo de Televisão), Cidinha Campos.
Ela se consagrou, nos anos 70 e 80, como apresentadora do “Cidinha Livre”, que incluía debates, variedades e até um
quadro em que ela fazia críticas à Rede Globo, comentando seus programas.
O rádio FM ganhava força na segunda metade dos anos 70, naquele mesmo esquema citado acima, só que competindo
com outros perfis. Havia o perfil “rádio rock”, de caráter experimental, feito pelas rádios Eldorado FM (vulgo Eldo Pop,
RJ), e Excelsior FM (SP), e o perfil “pop eclético”, predominantemente festivo, lançado pela Rádio Cidade (RJ), em 1977
(infelizmente a Rádio Cidade hoje renega este perfil, através de um arremedo de milésima categoria de rádio de rock).
Entre os anos 60 e 70, uma emissora AM já abraçava o perfil rock, a Federal AM, do grupo de Adolpho Bloch (Manchete)
que, ao acabar em 1974, mudando sua sede de Niterói para o Rio de Janeiro, virou Manchete AM.
O perfil popularesco, influenciado pelos programas de auditório (Chacrinha, Edson “Bolinha” Curi, Raul Gil, Silvio Santos),
passava a ser formatado em FM, e uma das primeiras emissoras foi a 98 FM (RJ), que passou a ocupar o mesmo espaço
da agonizante Eldo Pop.
Por sua vez a então rádio de rock Excelsior FM, conhecida como “A Máquina do Som”, que teve entre seus profissionais o
hoje repórter Maurício Kubrusly, passou por diversas mudanças entre o pop convencional e o adulto contemporâneo, tendo
se chamado Globo FM e Rádio X FM, até resultar hoje na CBN 90.5 de São Paulo.
Anos 80 / Primeira Metade - A princípio o rádio AM continua com popularidade similar a dos anos 70. Mas o rádio FM
avança em popularidade crescente, sobretudo entre os jovens. A segmentação das FMs em estilos musicais diferentes
começa a ser uma realidade, com rádios de adulto contemporâneo de diversos níveis, como o pop (que inclui música
romântica e disco music) e o sofisticado (somente jazz, blues, soft rock e MPB), além da popularização das rádios de rock
a partir da Fluminense FM (Niterói) e 97 FM (ABC paulista), entre outras.
Entre os anos de 1984 e 1989, o rádio carioca passava por uma ótima fase que, se não era 100%, era acima da média.
A segmentação era seguida com a mínima decência possível, nenhuma FM parasitava o perfil do rádio AM, havia rádios
de rock com linguagem realmente rock e repertório abrangente, rádios light com repertório light, e rádios pop que não
conseguiam convencer com suas posturas pseudo-alternativas, o que lhes impedia de avançar na postura pseudo-roqueira.
Ah, e o rádio AM tinha sua audiência consolidada, sua programação diversificada que praticamente não incluía pregações
evangélicas de baixo escalão.
Anos 80 / Segunda metade - O rádio AM, em 1985, sofre um duro golpe, tanto pelo esnobismo de adolescentes de
classe média, que tinham preconceito a coisas antigas, quanto pela politicagem, através das concessões de rádio
e TV promovidas pelo governo de José Sarney a todos aqueles que, políticos ou não, apoiavam o esquema de
politicagem da direita brasileira. Assim, muitos donos de rádio FM, que não tinham (nem têm) competência para
controlar rádio, acabaram por fazer expandir os arremedos de rádio AM nas FMs, acostumando mal a audiência
a ouvir “rádio AM” diluído e em som de FM. Começaram as primeiras queixas sobre o som do rádio AM, de que
seu som é ruim pra baixo.
Na verdade, rádio AM só tem som ruim em duas condições: primeira, quando os equipamentos de som ou radiotransmissores
não conseguem uma sintonia decente do rádio AM devido a constantes chiados, “pipocamento” e péssima recepção (os
aparelhos de som atuais são terríveis nesse sentido); segunda, quando as emissoras AM possuem baixa potência, muitas
por próprio desleixo de seus donos, completos sovinas, ignorantes e leigos em rádio.
A Rádio Jornal do Brasil AM, ou apenas JB AM, do Rio de Janeiro, com sua programação dedicada à música adulta
sofisticada e ao jornalismo, chegando a ter um programa de jazz apresentado pelo humorista (e conhecedor de música)
Jô Soares, chegou a ter qualidade de estéreo, com sonoridade dolby e grande potência. Curiosamente, uma FM pirata de
Salvador (BA), em 1990 repassava o som da JB AM, com programação mais musical e qualitativa que a Band FM local
(ainda conhecida na Bahia com o pomposo nome de Rádio Bandeirantes), que parecia bem mais uma rádio pirata com
programação tipo rádio AM. A “JB AM” era vizinha justamente dessa Band FM.
1990 / 2000 - Em 1990, entra no ar a Rede CBN de rádio, então restrita ao rádio AM. Duas afiliadas iniciam a rede, uma
no Rio de Janeiro, outra em São Paulo. Em 1994 a CBN seria uma das pioneiras da “papagaiagem” eletrônica, com dupla
transmissão em AM e FM em Brasília. Em 2000, a CBN AM sai do ar - apesar dela ter tido muito mais audiência que sua
“clone” em FM - , entrando no seu lugar a Jovem Pan 1 AM, que também tem “clone” em FM na capital do país.
As emissoras de rádio AM começam a ser compradas por seitas religiosas das mais diversas, desde a Igreja Católica e
a Igreja Universal do Reino de Deus até a mais obscura seita protestante. Aqui surge uma polêmica: oficialmente, diz-se
que as seitas voluntariamente se dirigiram aos donos das AMs para comprar tais emissoras, mas há indícios, em muitos
casos, de que os próprios donos quiseram se livrar das AMs e trabalhar só com FM, que tem baixo custo e alta incidência
de “jabá” (esquema de propinas que favorece o superfaturamento das FMs), mesmo para a programação jornalística, que
certos ouvintes de rádio julgam ser totalmente incorruptível.
Aqui a ingenuidade impera. Como essas pessoas dão confiabilidade cega ao jornalismo dessas FMs, mais do que ao
jornalismo televisivo, que lida com imagens? Em rádio, até um long play de efeitos sonoros pode forjar um tiroteio entre
guerrilhas do Oriente Médio, ou um imitador bastante habilidoso pode se passar por um político de grande projeção.
Claro que isso não ocorre, mas é possível de ocorrer. Mas edições mais sutis são feitas pelo rádio, como a construção de
um discurso jornalístico que coloque como “vilões” os manifestantes que, diante da Bolsa de Valores do Rio de Janeiro,
protestam contra a privatização de uma companhia estatal. Em TV também existe edição, “maquiagem” jornalística, mas
um jornalismo que se vê é bem mais verossímil do que um jornalismo que só se ouve.
A atitude romântica de determinados setores da intelectualidade reclamava o fim do “vitrolão” das FMs. Eles achavam
que, com noticiário e esportes, acabaria a música ruim das FMs. Mas, na prática, ocorreu exatamente o contrário: como
os jabazeiros da música não queriam perder dinheiro, eles arrumaram um jeito para transferir seus produtos para rádios
mais segmentadas.
Assim, as FMs classe A passaram a tocar até o mais brega da música norte-americana, as FMs de rock, além de tocarem
também coisas mais melosas, exportavam locutores que não encontravam vaga nas FMs de popularesco e pop internacional,
e por aí vai.
Pior que isso é a “invasão AM” nas FMs de todo o país, a ponto de, ironicamente, favorecer até mesmo o programa
governista “A Voz do Brasil”, que, antes boicotado, passava a ser ouvido por viciados em FM.
Isso é irônico. Em 1993, surgiu um movimento de algumas emissoras de rádio do Brasil reivindicando o fim da obrigatoriedade
da retransmissão de “A Voz do Brasil”, programa governista produzido pela Radiobrás, dividido em meia hora de noticiário
do Poder Executivo (Governo Federal) e outra meia do Poder Judiciário (Congresso Nacional). Estranhamente, FMs com
roupagem de AM como Band FM, estavam entre os assinantes. Depois se descobriu que o movimento não era exatamente
contra o programa governista, mas sim a favor da flexibilidade de horário do programa, para atender interesses comerciais
das emissoras de rádio. Certas rádios transmitem o programa fora do horário oficial (19 - 20 h), transmitindo entre 21 e
22 horas ou entre 23 horas e meia-noite. Uma coisa é certa: se “A Voz do Brasil” fosse de manhã, nem esse movimento
haveria, pois os donos de muitas rádios já inserem noticiário político no horário entre seis e oito da manhã.
As FMs com roupagem de AM passaram a adotar uma postura politicamente correta, contratando profissionais autênticos de
AM ou mesmo retransmitindo alguns programas ou toda a programação de AM. Aqui entram os “papagaios eletrônicos”.
Em 2000, o rádio AM sofre o auge da discriminação. Mesmo aqueles que regularmente ouviam AM migraram para as FMs.
Até a revista esportiva Placar, do conservador grupo Abril, anunciou a “morte do rádio AM para as transmissões esportivas”.
Vale destacar que futebol em FM rende muito mais jabá do que até mesmo a música mais comercial, que em termos de
propina custa muito pouco para a sede de lucro dos donos, quase uma gorjetinha.
Há indícios de que o mesmo esquema dos dirigentes esportivos investigado recentemente pela CPI do futebol tenha
investido uma fortuna para a transferência de locutores esportivos influentes, em todo o país, para as emissoras FM,
que coincidiu com mecanismos tendenciosos do futebol como a elevação imediata, sem jogos, para o grupo de elite do
Brasileirão (rebatizado Taça João Havelange), de times de segunda e terceira divisões, e o esticamento do calendário do
campeonato brasileiro, cuja partida final ocorreu no penúltimo dia de 2000 (em outros anos o Brasileirão terminava no final
de novembro ou início de dezembro).
Um marketing ostensivo e similar no rádio paulista se observa nos casos dos programas “K Sports Já” (Nova FM), do
“Transamérica Esporte Clube” da Transamérica, do “Estádio 97” (Energia 97 FM) e “Na geral” (Brasil 2000).
Dizem que os jabazeiros pretendiam investir pesado na “Rede Nova FM”, que o locutor esportivo Jorge Kajuru só não
lançou por problemas causados com o governo de Goiás (domicílio radiofônico de Kajuru, que tinha um programa na Rádio
K AM - que possui em Goiânia um “clone” em FM - que atacava o governo estadual) e o Ministério das Comunicações, que
por ação movida pelo governo goiano teve que dar suspensão de um mês às transmissões da Rádio K.
Com o imprevisto acerca de Kajuru, os jabazeiros do esporte passaram a investir no futuro programa que dissidentes da
Band TV e FM montaram para a Transamérica (rádio do ABN Amro Bank). No Norte, Nordeste, Centro-Oeste e cidades
interioranas, o sucateamento do AM chega a ser grosseiro e cruel.
2001 - Uma nova tecnologia pode surgir. Do contrário que pensam os poderosos, não é a tecnologia contra o rádio AM, mas
a favor dele. É a tecnologia digital, que dará um som mais potente à Amplitude Modulada. Chiados e “pipocamento” serão
eliminados e o som será tão bom quanto o FM. É prevista uma revolução radiofônica que pode reverter a migração da
programação AM para as FMs, causando o processo inverso, e pode até atrair interesse de quem se recusava radicalmente
a investir no rádio AM, como no caso da empresa Transamérica. Até os “papagaios eletrônicos” perderão sua razão de ser.
Será um capítulo feliz para um espaço radiofônico popular e histórico que, em plenos anos 2000, chegou perto do fim por
causa da discriminação extrema até de seus profissionais. Com o AM digital, um novo fôlego para o AM será enfim dado.

kw, operando na frequencia de 1600 khz. A Rádio já conta com seus 45 anos de existência e agora com potência de 10kw,
transmitindo da cidade de Muritiba. Tenho escutado quase que diariamente esta emissora, na parte da noite, por volta das
20:30 (horário local ), nos momento de “fading” da Rádio Nove de Julho, falando de esporte ( futebol), jornalismo, etc. .

Modulation a bit distorted and carrier instability confirmed by switching on BFO. Believe this had been missing for a while,
tho I have not tried to track it nightly. There were plans to somehow upgrade coverage of this frequency while downgrading
coverage of LV de tu Conciencia, 6010.
** MEXICO. I still keep a TV monitor running on open channel 3 or 2 much of the time, and Aug 15 finally rewarded by
a late-season sporadic E opening from Mexico fading in at 2009: Spanish infomercial about some diagnostic medical
device, with phone 5440-7100 in large numbers permanently at screen bottom, as `teléfono directo`. On brief peaks
could make out ``3tv`` bug in upper right, which means XHP Puebla. Still out and in to 2020 mention of ``No Duda Más``
seemingly title of show. Tried to look it up in TVG online for Puebla, but cable system there apparently does not carry this
local station! No must-carry rules?
At 2030 had brief fade-in of a PSA for IEPC TABASCO, which points to XHVIA, Villahermosa, as in http://www.w9wi.
com/channels/3.html altho it is an XEW network-2 relay and I am not sure whether it would be inserting local PSA;
but even less likely any other station would for Tabasco. Googling soon explains initialism: Instituto Electoral y de
Participación Ciudadana.

** SPAIN [and non]. Monitored REE`s DX program Amigos de la Onda Corta UT Sat Aug 15 0505-0530 on http://www.rtve.
es/rne/audio/RNEReal.ram webcast instead of SW 6055, 5965 or 9630. Entire program devoted to interview with REE tech
director José Antonio García M.--- about DRM plans. Yes, they will have one DRM transmitter going toward NAm by yearend
at Cariari, COSTA RICA, and plan to add another after that, which could cover SAm or any other target.
Besides the one DRM at Noblejas, plans to add three or four more DRM-capable in next few years as old transmitters are
replaced, but also continue analog. That was about the only significant `news` but he and Antonio Buitrago managed to
converse for 25 minutes. Also mentioned relay exchange with China. Show repeats at 0005 UT Sunday.
** U S A. Music Time in Africa, the excellent weekend show on VOA at 2000-2100 Sat & Sun, is now best heard here on
17895, since Greenville is currently the transmitter site. Of course, you need to be beyond the skip zone and/or benefiting
from a closer sporadic E opening. Introduction at 2003 Aug 15 about acoustic guitars in Africa. (Too bad we have to specify
àcoustic` these days, even concerning Africa.) Supposedly // are 15580 Botswana, which may suffice closer to Greenville,
and 9885 which according to registrations switches from Botswana to Greenville in the middle of the hour --- but no sign of
anything there at 2037 check.
UNIDENTIFIED. 7910-7965 approx., pulses presumably OTH radar from China, Aug 15 at 1335, higher pitched than usual,
and with quick interruptions for other noises, so could be something else?.
** BIAFRA [non]. Quick check reconfirms V. of Biafra International still on 15665 via WHRI, Friday August 14 at 1927, in
English mentioning Ibos. WRTH predicts that 17520 will resume for this in September, Fridays at 1900-2000.
** BRAZIL. R. Brasil Central always fun to hear when the MUF attains 12 MHz in the middle of the night, such as Aug 14 at
0525, live Brazilian-accented announcer with time check has to be this on 11815; deep fades. Too much noise on 60 m to
hear // 4985; also a weaker signal on 11925, presumably Bandeirantes, another 24h, 25m Brazilian broadcaster.
** NEW ZEALAND. RNZI missing from AM frequency 11725, Aug 14 at 0519, and still past 0530, while usual strong DRM
signal on 11670-11675-11680 remained, so the AM transmitter was down or stuck on some other channel.
** SERBIA [non]. International Radio Serbia is missing from 9675 after 0100, when it is supposedly on the air 7 days a week
with the 0100-0130 `Ènglish-2`` broadcast to NAm, per http://glassrbije.org/E/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogc

while the `Ènglish 1`` at 0030 is daily except UT Sundays when there is a longer Serbian broadcast instead.
Checked UT Friday Aug 14 at 0114, nothing on 9675, but propagation OK as VOR via Pridnestrovye was well heard on 9665.
UT Saturday August 15 tuned in earlier at 0035 and found IRS in English; 0047 jazzy Balkan music; 0057 sign-off just as
``Radio Serbia`` mentioning 6100 to Europe, 9675 to North America, but not the times. IS and off by 0058:30*, and still
not back on at 0110 check. They used to make an antenna change from 310 to 325 degrees, so it probably went off briefly
before 0100. Now the schedule shows 310 for both transmissions.
** U S A. WWCR 50-meter transmissions were breaking thru on 25m, Aug 14 at 0512 on 11780, Pastor Pete Peters //
5890 (no Brasil on this date), and 11870, Pastor Melissa Scott // 5935, mixing with WEWN which was weaker than usual.
However, the WWCR fundamentals were extremely strong, so it`s difficult to be 100% certain whether the harmonix were
receiver- or transmitter-produced. However2, other harmonix and mixing products from WWCR certainly have existed.

English mentioning Ibos. WRTH predicts that 17520 will resume for this in September, Fridays at 1900-2000.
** BRAZIL. R. Brasil Central always fun to hear when the MUF attains 12 MHz in the middle of the night, such as Aug 14 at
0525, live Brazilian-accented announcer with time check has to be this; deep fades. Too much noise on 60 m to hear // 4985;
also a weaker signal on 11925, presumably Bandeirantes, another 24h, 25m Brazilian broadcaster.
** NEW ZEALAND. RNZI missing from AM frequency 11725, Aug 14 at 0519, and still past 0530, while usual strong DRM
signal on 11670-11675-11680 remained, so the AM transmitter was down or stuck on some other channel.
** SERBIA [non]. International Radio Serbia is missing from 9675 after 0100, when it is supposedly on the air 7 days a week
with the 0100-0130 `Ènglish-2`` broadcast to NAm, per http://glassrbije.org/E/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogc
ategory&id=21&Itemid=34
while the `Ènglish 1`` at 0030 is daily except UT Sundays when there is a longer Serbian broadcast instead.
Checked UT Friday Aug 14 at 0114, nothing on 9675, but propagation OK as VOR via Pridnestrovye was well heard on 9665.
UT Saturday August 15 tuned in earlier at 0035 and found IRS in English; 0047 jazzy Balkan music; 0057 sign-off just as
``Radio Serbia`` mentioning 6100 to Europe, 9675 to North America, but not the times. IS and off by 0058:30*, and still
not back on at 0110 check. They used to make an antenna change from 310 to 325 degrees, so it probably went off briefly
before 0100. Now the schedule shows 310 for both transmissions.
** U S A. WWCR 50-meter transmissions were breaking thru on 25m, Aug 14 at 0512 on 11780, Pastor Pete Peters //
5890 (no Brasil on this date), and 11870, Pastor Melissa Scott // 5935, mixing with WEWN which was weaker than usual.
However, the WWCR fundamentals were extremely strong, so it`s difficult to be 100% certain whether the harmonix were
receiver- or transmitter-produced. However2, other harmonix and mixing products from WWCR certainly have existed.
** CUBA. RHC shifts again which frequencies are in English and which in Spanish after 0500. Aug 13 at 0535, English on
6010, 6060, and 6140; Spanish on 6000, 6120. 11760 may have been on the air but on this occasion dominated by NHK in
Russian, along with a SAH. Most nights recently, 6140 has been in Spanish instead. Of course RHC`s own current online
transmission schedule continues to show nothing but English after 0500.
RHC also continues secret midday transmission in Spanish, reconfirmed August 13 at 1655 at least on 13760, 11800
distorted, 11760.
** POLAND [non]. PRES via WRN via WRMI, axually on the 9955 air, Aug 12 at 2007 check, Slawek Szefs recognizable right
away, 2010 to YL on home schooling. Signal was fading up to fair, then down to poor. WRN relays are on the WRMI (webcast)
schedule M-F at 16-24 UT, but the SW transmitter has mostly been silent. Jeff White indicated it would be more active due to
HFCC in the Dominican Republic 17-21 August: http://www.hfcc.org/B09puntacana.html and has already started. Many other
broadcasters with no SW such as Israel and Ireland, or difficult-to-hear-in-NAm SW are involved in this service gratis tnx to

However, WRMI schedule grid shows this entire 40-hour-per-week block in English is on the LAm/Carib antenna, not the
NAm antenna. However2, no sign of WRMI 9955 at 1655 UT check August 13; so you never know.
** TAIWAN [non]. RTI, 5950 via WYFR, UT Thursday Aug 13 at 0535 had comedy by two guys faking exaggerated British
accents, then back to American, subjects including land sharx, pandas on demand. Must have been Instant Noodles show.
No swearing noted. Not terribly funny, but kudos for trying, as there is far too little comedy on shortwave!.
** U S A. WTJC, 9370v, accompanied by distorted no-carrier spurs at plus and minus 30 kHz, 9340 and 9400, August 13 at
0528-0532 during martial choral hymn. Each spur covered roughly 15 kHz. Another weaker one could be detected around
9315, but not 9425. 9370 fundamental was stronger than usual, S9+22.
** CHINA. Firedrake August 12: at 1235 heard again on 8400, nothing on 9000. At 1250, JBA on 13970; at 1252 poor on
14430, fair at 1348. At 1435 FD weak and alone on 11990, but dominant and much stronger on // 12040 mixing with CNR1
and VOA Chinese, not // 14430.
At 1440, 9845 // 12040 music with choral, so not FD?.
** CUBA [non]. R. Martí, Aug 12 at 1414 on 11930 with jazzed-up Warsaw Concerto music mixing with talk, over jamming at
the moment while // Greenville 11845 was under jamming.
** ECUADOR [non]. DX Partyline via WRMI, 9955, Wed Aug 12 at 1441 concluding talk by Christer Brunström on his
visit to RRI Romania, then logs more than a month old from Stewart MacKenzie, dated July 10 and 9. We suspect that
DXPLs being aired are not the latest ones. Perhaps the Saturday of original airing is specified at the outset, but not so for
Aventura Diexista which followed at 1445. If anyone is keeping track, this one had Alen Grájam in Esmeraldas on a project
for his home church, and apologizing for transmission problem the previous week at 1445 on HCJB itself; then R. Guía
Internacional feature from Jorge García, CDXA, about Colombia on MW.
** EGYPT. 15710 at 1254 August 12, very distorted YL talking unID language as always the case on this frequency among
others from R. Cairo, scheduled Indonesian at 1230-1400 from Abis site.
** U S A. WINB, 9265, still running the convicted ``Tony Alámo``, August 12 at 1239, discussing Dr. Phil with YL, accusing him of being
a serial polygamist, advice to help him avoid hell, not to hurt him. I`m sure Phil appreciates that! Of course, simultaneous polygamy
with girls is Tony`s God-given right. At 1304 recheck, 9265 was off the air but no sign of daytime frequency 13570, nor at 1432.
** U S A. VOA Greenville, 17585, Aug 12 at 1417-1422 with regular Wednesday feature Wordmaster, this time evaluating
words used in blogs on a happiness scale, which I found rather too esoteric. Good and steady signal today, and kept
listening to see what would happen at 1430. Same as yesterday, cut off Today in History before it was finished, for sign-off
and Yankee Doodle, modulation ending at approximately 1431, and carrier finally off at 1431:20. It must have still overlapped
Botswana for a sesquiminute, but that was totally inaudible here today.
UNIDENTIFIED. 11735, which had open carrier and tone test Aug 11, rechecked 24 hours later Aug 12 around 0530: nothing.
** CANADA. Still zero signal from CFRX 6070 at 1320 check August 11. Harold Sellers passes on word from Steve Canney
that the transmitter has been damaged again and is back in New York for repairs, so no telling how long it will be off. When it
does come back, don`t expect to hear Peter Anthony Holder any more after 0500 UT weeknights, as his home station CJAD
Montréal has fired most of its local talk hosts.
** CHILE. 17680, CVC, normally a loud and reliable signal, only a trace of carrier Aug 11 at 1345, then bits of Spanish
detectable; improved considerably by 1350. The propagation, it is changing.
** CHINA. Firedrake August 11: at 1337 on 12040, mixing with CNR1 jammer and VOA Chinese.
Nothing else noticed until 1415 found a good but fluttery FD-only signal on 15780, // 12040. That means the Sound of Hope,
Xi Wang Zhi Sheng relay via Tajikistan, was on 15780 today; Aoki lists it on 15750 but varying down to 15740 at 1400-1430
and to 15720 at 1230-1300.
Then at 1419 I searched for more Firedrake: only one found was 13500 // but weaker than 15780. Nothing audible on 8400,
9000, 11300, 13970, 14430, 15150, 15600, 17470v.
** EAST TURKISTAN. 13670, Aug 11 at 1339, poor signal in music with hi-pitched whistling which caught my ear, Chinese
announcement, then traditional instrumental music. Aoki says Urümqi beamed due west, CRI Chinese service from the PRC.
** INDONESIA. 9524.9, VOI, Aug 11, several chex during the 13-1357 English hour confirmed it was yet another Tuesday hookup
with the guy at RRI Banjarmasin, and as usual readability difficult due to accents, hum, less than optimum modulation.
** KOREA NORTH [and non]. 15245v, at 1417 Aug 11, het and French // 11710, so VOK, and off-frequency, vs scheduled
BBC Russian via Woofferton 15245.0. I imagine the collision is even worse in Russia.
** JAPAN. 6055, R. Nikkei, plays a lot of classical Moog synthesizer music, such as Aug 10 at 1248, Handel`s Water Music,
welcoming the typhoon?.
** RUSSIA. Surprised to find no signal on 13775, the only frequency to NAm from VOR in English at 0530 August 11; it was
on earlier in the hour, then at 0531+ cut back on just in time for Kaleidoscope.
** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 13845, WWCR, Aug 11 at 1432 Brother Scare with double audio feed a second apart and
furthermore breaking up badly, even more unlistenable than when perfectly transmitted. Same on WWRB 9385, so B.S.`s
fault from the feed end. Is God getting him? Since the time is bought and paid for, do the stations not care whether there are
such terrible technical problems beyond their control and just let it run anyway?.
** SPAIN. 17507 approximately, buzzy spur, no carrier, with Spanish modulation, Aug 11 at 1352, fading out and in, very poor.
First frequency checked for possible //, REE 17595 turned out to be the source. Fundamental was VG and not distorted.
Could not hear a match around 17683, 88 kHz on the other side, but did notice a quite weak signal from CHILE, q.v.
** TAIWAN [and non]. 7130, Aug 10 at 1257 open carrier with het, 1300 RTI ID ``Kochirawa, RTI`` opening in Japanese
audible despite ham SSB QRM. This frequency temporarily replaces 9735, per S. Aoki and R. Howard. RTI`s transmitter sites
are diversified all over the island, so altho 9735 was put off by typhoon, 7130 backs it up from elsewhere. The het presumably
from RTM Sarawak on 7130.5. Neither, of course, has any business still broadcasting in the exclusive 40m ham band!.
Also lo audible het vs Japanese noted next day Aug 11 at 1329 check. Ron pinned Taiwan on 7129.88v Aug 10.
** U S A [and non]. VOA English, Greenville 17585, missing at 1400 Aug 11; maybe late coming on, or propagation just not
built up yet, but it was OK at 1411 recheck. 1426 with baseball news --- does the mostly AfroAsian audience really care about
US BB, or is this secretly for expatriates? 1428 Today in History. This 2-minute feature always manages to cram in several
significant events, this time Andrew Carnegie died, King Hussein crowned, Watts riots, Greenspan takes over Fed. But the last
item was cut off at 1429:37, then sign-off routine with YDD, which lasted until 1430:25 open carrier and off at 1430:38. During
the last few sex, but not before, I could hear traces of Botswana site, then clear after Greenville off, but too weak here.
We have been complaining for months about VOA interfering with itself, these two transmitters overlapping for many minutes
before and after 1430. It appears IBB finally is making some effort to reduce the overlap, but not enough. They should forget
about the unnecessary YDD sign-off, drop Greenville carrier immediately at 1430:00 or a few sex before if there is any
pause at all in programming, and simultaneously crash-start Botswana with same programming, so that there is no overlap
and hardly any break in transmission for the listeners in Africa. Is this not obvious? It requires a bit of coördination, but
should not be such a difficult task. Better yet, rearrange the schedule so there is no site switch in the middle of the one-hour
transmission, as that was totally uncalled for in the first place.
UNIDENTIFIED. 7880-7930, rapid pulses, pitch varying slightly, presumably OTH radar, most likely from China at this hour,
1325 UT August 11.
UNIDENTIFIED. 11735, Aug 11 at 0527 open carrier, poor signal, then tone test. What programming would come on at
0530? None, still TT, and at 0541. Nothing at all listed at this hour in Aoki, EiBi, HFCC or WRTH. Meanwhile, NZ 11725, NHK
11715 had good signals, but not RHC 11760.
CUBA. Surprised to hear RHC Spanish programming on 13740, Aug 9 at 1354, as it`s supposed to be a CRI-relay frequency
only from 1400 in English, but usually on 10-15 minutes early with open carrier. That made it // RHC intentional frequencies
13680, 13760 and 13780, which with the mixing products on 13580 and 13880 make six // on 22m.
Around 1357, 13740 switched to CRI musical prélude. For further anomalies after 2000 when Aló, Presidente appeared on
some RHC-only frequencies, see VENEZUELA [non].
** OKLAHOMA. Found another talking house on 1670 kHz in Enid; August 8 around 2000 UT from a parking lot near the
intersexion of Garriott and Cleveland, I got this spiel about how wonderful talking houses are, and this particular one, which
has all the bedrooms on the third floor, etc. Never heard location mentioned other than in the Wordspring(?) Hills Addition,
but did get a website, http://www.enidhomes.com and soon found a match, actually 202 Tanglewood in Whispering Hills,
altho nothing mentioned there about its being a radio station!

As I drove northeastward, found the signal stayed about the same, which means it was roughly at the same distance
despite my motion. Ergo probably to the northwest. Yes, map finds address near the intersexion of Wheatridge and
Purdue, which is roughly 3 miles north and 3 miles west of where I first heard it, or a bit more than 4 miles away. Some
of these only make it out a few blox.
** OKLAHOMA [and non]. One of the IBOC monsters in OKC had reverted to ordinary AM, Saturday August 8 at 1954 as I
started a MW bandscan --- WWLS 640, probably since they were running a silly ballgame, to do away with synch problems.
I could axually hear a weak station on 630, probably KHOW Denver, as KLTT-670 Denver makes it normally on groundwave
at over 700 km. 630 still had some IBOC from Plano 620. But KTOK-990-1000-1010 remained IBOC-ridden, as well as
KFAQ-1160-1170-1180 Tulsa.
** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. Further observations of WWCR 13845, which used to be 24/7 Doctor Gene Scott/Pastor Melissa
Scott: Aug 8 around 1630 it was still Brother Stair, but at 1855 check, PMS was back on it. Changed some time in between.
Aug 9 at 1307, 13845 had another screaming preacher but he was with The Overcomer Ministry as // 9385 WWRB and
again out of synch by about 3 seconds. At 1414 B.S. himself was on both. Rick Barton, AZ, heard him claim he was now on
13845 until 2300, but at 1700 WWCR already switched back to PMS.
** U S A. WINB, which was missing from both frequencies the morning before, audible on 9265, Aug 9 at 1245 with YL
preacher, not Brother Scare.
** VENEZUELA [non]. `Àló, Presidente`` had been missing for weeks, and did not check for it soon after 1400 UT this Sunday
August 9; but next bandscan at the late hour of 1854 found Hugo interacting with audience on 13750 – the A,P-only channel
via CUBA, along with scheduled // 11690, 12010, 13680 and 17750. 11690 and 12010 were an echo apart from 1750; 11690
had the usual RTTY QRM; 13680 was just barely audible and weaker than BBCWS UK on the side from 13675.
At 1918, still going on 13750, altho regular separate daily hour of RNV CI was also in progress on 15290. At 1920 found
RHC`s 13760 on the air now and instead of own programming also // 13750 an echo apart. At 2000, 13750 still going with
A,P, along with 13760, but now both muscled aside by Sportugal on 13755 which had just moved down from 15560. At
2003, when RHC is supposed to be resuming its own schedule in other languages, as Hugo briefly broke into song, found
more // to the A,P service on 11760, 11770 and 11800. I wonder if RHC don`t have enough different program feed channels
available; or the switching is just too complex and unpredictable to keep everything straight.
Next check at 2056, found singing on 13750 // 11760, 11770, 11800, 12010 with singing, not audible on 11690 or 13680. At
2058 also on // 17750 talking about Habana, so apparently in meantime had morphed back into RHC-produced programming.
17750 also had become rather distorted, but not as bad as 11800. At 2059 they all went into RHC IS and ID. At 2100 on
13750 and 17750 introducing a cultural fill program from the RHC archives, about Ernesto Lecuona, playing Siboney. At
2102, found that 12010 and 17750 had gone off, and 17660 had come on, the latter being the frequency supposed to be in
English at 2030-2130, but still Spanish.
UNIDENTIFIED. On a caradio bandscan August 8 at 1956 UT could hear a SAH of 4 Hz on 1090 kHz, an otherwise vacant
daytime frequency here bearing very weak carriers. There are three possibilities: KAAY 50 kW Little Rock AR, which on
non-direxional daytime supposedly has a radius out to here, but not really due to poor conductivity; KVOP Plainview TX in
the Panhandle with 5 kW and a null toward KAAY, not much usward either; and KEXS Excelsior Springs MO (near KC), only

CANADA. CHU is rarely strong enough here to tell, but as Liz Cameron, MI, has been noting, there is some buzz mixing with
the 7850 signal, Aug 22 at 1221. It`s more obvious with BFO on, and the transmitter seems slightly unstable.
** CHINA. Searching every kHz between 8 and 19 MHz for Firedrake, Aug 22 between 1200 and 1300, only found one, and
it is new, 10210, poor with flutter at 1230. Next check at 1310, inaudible, altho next2 check at 1359 there it was again, but
carrier cut off at 1400:30.
A few months ago FD was showing up in the 10.2+ MHz range, no doubt prompted by Sound of Hope using such frequencies.
By golly, today`s edition of Aoki already has 10210 as a [possibly] 24 hour 1 kW Xi Wang Zhi Sheng SOH outlet, from
Taiwan, 119-55 E. 26-10 N, and *jammed of course.
As for the absence otherwise of far out-of-band FD, this happened about the same time as Typhoon Morakot, so I theorize
that many of the SOH low-power ham-type transmitters on Taiwan were blown off the air.
** COLOMBIA. Missing the night before, Marfil Estéreo back on 5910 air Aug 22 at 0538 with typical music.
** CUBA. My thorough morning bandscan Aug 22 encountered DentroCuban Jamming Command pulses in some odd spots, probably
spurs from nearby intentional jamming frequencies, or one of the innumerable transmitters on each victim channel mistuned.
1220 on 7378, covering 7375-7380, from 7405? Sometimes there is jamming against nothing on 7365 when not in use by Martí, not now.
1229 on 9930, lite pulses, no sign of scheduled T8WH Palau, vs very heavy jamming against inaudible WRMI 9955, which
itself is totally uncalled-for as WRMI is now broadcasting R. Prague 7 days a week during this entire sesquihour. Commies
vs ex-Commies? How many poor DentroCubans are starving because of this waste?
1246 on 9775, more weak but unmistakable pulsing, probably related to the heavy jamming on 9805 Martí. Collateral victims
in this case would be Fu Hsing, Taiwan, and/or CNR-2 Beijing, unheard, in their own radio war. Notice that these Cuban
jamming spurs(?) are typically 25-30 kHz on the lo side, not the hi side of the prime frequency.
** CUBA [non]. 5980, R. Martí, Aug 22 at 1159:30 cut off the air just as SW QSY announcement was starting, before any of
the next batch of frequencies could be mentioned, leaving listeners stranded. How about a bit closer coördination between
Miami and Greenville if not Washington?.
** GERMANY [non]. 13860 with YL in French, Aug 22 at 1234. It`s DW via Sines, PORTUGAL during this hour.
** INDONESIA. Have not bothered to report VOI lately, but for the record, still going with English hour on 9524.9, Aug 22 at 1316
check reminiscing about the Japanese occupation. Signal rather weak; it was much better an hour earlier in Indonesian.
** KOREA NORTH. 6070, free of CFRX QRM so now the big roar from Pyongyang`s ailing transmitter can be heard in the
clear, Aug 22 at 1204. Hardly any program modulation makes it thru the self-inflicted QRM, but heard a bit of music and 1210
traces of talk. Per Aoki, This is VOK`s Japanese service at 0900-1250, 125 kW, 109 degrees from Kanggye, which no doubt
has an audience in Japan of approximately zero. How many poor North Koreans are starving because of this waste?.
** KOREA SOUTH [and non]. KBSWR, 9650 via Canada, paused in bandscanning Saturday Aug 22 to listen to a few minutes
of Worldwide Friendship mailbag show. At 1248 the YLs were reading some listener comments from website, but I heard
no apology for publishing contest winners` full e-mail addresses. 1251-1254 weekly listening tips from Kevin O`Donovan in
Farmington NM: LRA-36 currently being heard in Europe; Brunström heard RAE 15344; Willie`s Place (Nelson) is on Sirius
64 and XM something this weekend. If KBS is not enough for you from Korea, TBS-EFM is a 24-hour English station from
Seoul, with Korean and Western pop music, some live news and talk shows, such as 11-13 UT `Ìn Town`` hosted by Sue
Pa[r]k of KBS itself with pop hits and messages, webcast via http://tbsefm.seoul.kr
Checking that website, they case it ``tbs eFM``, and the show is axually ``M Town``, the hostess a.k.a. Park Su-yeon, http://

RASA Mérida, 6104.7, Aug 22, must have intuned just in time at 1205 as heard ad in Spanish strangely giving website
ending in .uk, but big het from 6105.0, and also squeezed by stronger 6100 and 6110 signals. In next few minutes, could
not pull any further audio from XEQM, which faded down quickly, but still able to het. 6100 is CRI in Russian via Beijing site;
6105 is Taiwan in Cantonese via Kouhu; 6110 is ChiCom jamming/VOA Tinian. See also UNIDENTIFIED 6045
** NETHERLANDS [non]. Hearing RNW in Dutch where I should not: 6225, Aug 22 at 0521, quite readable as BONAIRE
leapfrog of 6165 over NHK relay this semihour only on 6195.
Also as soon as KBS via Sackville [see KOREA SOUTH] quit at 1259 Aug 22, RNW IS and Dutch announcements for
Indonesia via Tinang, PHILIPPINES in clear for less than a minute until Sackville came back on with CRI relay. Sack is
switching from 268 to 240 degrees during this break, and CRI does come in a bit stronger here, but RN continues audible
underneath until 1330 at varying levels depending on day-to-day propagation fluxuation.
** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 13845, WWCR with very poor signal at early hour of 1235 Aug 22, not Brother Scare but
certainly someone else preaching on The Overcomer Ministry, for // 3185 WWRB, but 13845 a few sex ahead of 3185.
** TAIWAN. 9735, RTI Japanese service reactivated, Aug 22 at 1317, poor signal, no spurs today on 9730 or 9740. This is
the Tainan transmitter that was blown off by typhoon, and temporarily replaced by 7130 from another site, where nothing
was audible today. FE reports indicate this came back several days ago but first time I`ve heard it again.
** U S A. The first WWCR airing of WORLD OF RADIO 1474 confirmed on new experimental 15820 ex-15825, Friday Aug
21 at 2029:30 (rather than starting as early as 2028:30 sometimes), only fair signal here in the skip zone with no Es to help.
Also Aug 22 at 1238 still on 15820, for how much longer? poor with preacher. See also SOUTH CAROLINA [non]
** U S A. WRNO must have been testing longer hours on 7505v, but Aug 22 at 0515 it was off as usual. Propagation was a
bit strange, but surely would have heard some sign of it if on.
Also at 0510, 0515, WEWN absent from 7555 and 11870, but they have been missing quite a bit of airtime lately.
At 0515, usually dominant WYFR was JBA on 9680 and 9715, even less on 9355 and 9385, but good on 7730, so the MUF
had plunged to between 8 and 9 MHz (Glenn Hauser, OK, DX LISTENING DIGEST)
** U S A. A few weeks ago I found a time when World Harvest Radio was axually broadcasting DXing with Cumbre on SW,
Sunday 1200 on WHRI 9410. The online schedule still shows it also Saturday on same, so finally checked for that Aug 22:
NOTHING, not even on the air at 1223, so WHR`s fantasy scheduling is reconfirmed.
** U S A [non]. 9490, Aug 22 at 1225 M&M conversation, sounds like a mix between Korean and Japanese --- maybe Korean
with a Japanese accent? That must surely affect some individuals with a cross-cultural background, but would not expect to
be heard on VOA, which this turned out to be per schedule, 1200-1300 via Saipan.
UNIDENTIFIED. Shortly after I tuned in 6045, Aug 22 at 0529, BBC Hausa via Ascension went off abruptly while still talking,
but before it did I was noticing a fast rippling SAH, like we used to get from slightly off-frequency and very low-powered
XEXQ San Luis Potosí, which has not been reported in months. And I never hear any trace of it around 1200/1400 when
frequency is clear. However, after BBC off there was no audio to pull. Could also have been the new Uruguayan; nothing
else scheduled, but bears further investigation 0530-0600 before 6045 is blocked another hour by KBSWR via Sackville.
UNIDENTIFIED. 6950-7000 approx., over-the-horizon radar pulsing/clicking, presumably China, at 1214 Aug 22. Then also
heard a matching segment 6800-6840 peaking at 6820.
** AUSTRALIA. RA is regular on 15240, 15160, but not often heard on 15415, as it was Aug 21 at 0517 with song, in
English? Not // the others. 15415 is 329 degrees from Shep, alternating English and Indonesian and this was during a semihour in the latter service.
** AUSTRALIA. 13635 and 13660 with similar-sounding country gospel YL at 1336 Aug 21, but not //. No wonder: both
are CVC Darwin, in English and Chinese services respectively. Signals about the same too tho not on same azimuths,
303 and 340 degrees. At 1336, 13635 briefly inserted an English announcement; at 1341, 13660 interrupted for brief YL
announcement in Chinese.
** CHINA [and non]. 7385, now the collision between RTI and ChiCom jamming is here, ex-7185, and sounds about the
same, with a SAH between them, Aug 21 at 1325. So the mess in the hamband on 7185 is finally gone. However, that`s bad
news for previous occupants of 7385, notably Tibet! The Aug 21 edition of Aoki now has nothing on 7185, but in this time
period on 7385 includes:
1000-1700 RTI Kouhu and *jamming since Aug 16
1500-1700 BBCWS via South Africa in English and African languages
0930-1700+ PBS Xizang
0700-1300 WHRI-6 M-F [but not really?]
Firedrake search Aug 21 found only one stand-alone between 8 and 19 MHz: 13500, fluttery at 1334. Also barely audible //
on 12040 where it mixes with CNR1 jamming and VOA.
** COLOMBIA. Marfil Estéreo definitely absent from 5910, Aug 21 at 0509 check. It`s quite easily heard when active.
** CUBA. Check of RHC Aug 20 at 2010: Spanish on 11760, 11770, distorted 11800, barely on 13760 eclipsed by Portugal
13755. Per RHC`s own schedule 11770 is supposed to be in Portuguese at 2000-2030, another victim of the Honduran
oligarchy, or rather RHC`s obsession with Zelaya`s plight.
At 0508 Aug 21, unlike 24 hours earlier, RHC English was back on 6010, and not audible on 13790, // 6060, while Spanish on
6000, 6120, 6140. At 0514 I could also detect very weak signal on 11760 with Spanish an echo apart from other site on 6120.
13880 with remarkably strong S9+12 signal for a leapfrog spur (13680 over 13780), Aug 21 at 1337 with RHC béisbol report,
and as usual much weaker on the other mix 13580.
DentroCuban Jamming Command goes bonkers, blasting away against nothing: at least two heavy pulse transmitters, at
different rates and fading independently on 9545 at 0513 Aug 21, long after Radio República quits at 0400. At 0515 heard
same type of jamming on 11930, but not synchronized with 9545. 11930 is of course the R. Martí frequency in use only at 1424! Standard remark about better expenditure would be for feeding undernourished DentroCubans, if not merely conserving
precious electrical fluid.
** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC. Jeff White advised at 0056 UT Aug 21 that R. Discovery was on the 4730 air:
``Glenn: We’re on tonight in SSB. Maybe I can get George McClintock to switch it to AM later on tonight and leave it on
overnight.``
So I turned off and/or unplugged most household noise sources, computers and TVs and tried at 0335 UT --- Yes, can
detect SSB talking around 4730.5, but too high atmospheric noise level plus weak (but plenty) RTTY QRM make copying
any details impossible. While weather is finally clear here, there are storms as close as southern Oklahoma. Tried again
at 0506, but nothing heard. What I did hear earlier was broadcast-type speech, not two-way contacts, and since Brandon
Jordan in TN, previously measured R. Discovery on the same off-frequency, I am quite sure I had it; altho on this UT date he
could not hear it, nor later, so maybe not on all-night. On the FRG-7 it`s easy to zero-beat WYFR on 7730.0 and then find
that RD is definitely not centered on 4730.0. Presumably about done with this test as HFCC is wrapping up, but then moving
transmitter to Santo Domingo for eventual regular service. If R. Descubrimiento is licensed, what is its HI- callsign?.
** U S A. WRNO, 7505, with (temporarily?) expanded schedule, as in previous report, even more: Aug 20 at 2003 check there is
music on frequency, must be WRNO. Not clear what span their ultimate 12-hour-per-day SW service will encompass, but would
expect it to be mostly night hours if still avoiding 15590. OTOH, 7505 can reach a certain one-hop radius all day, tho liable to lose
out to absorption around noon. 7505 is supposedly available only between 22 and 16 per A-09 version 2 FCC listings.
** U S A. WRMI, 9955, with (temporarily?) expanded schedule, to include at least part of WRN relays which are on the
webcast M-F at 16-24 = 40 hours per week: poor but audible Aug 20 at 2004 with English news from Poland.
** U S A. WWCR still on 15820 ex-15825, Aug 21 at 1339 with gospel music, good signal. The transmitter schedule on
website still shows 15825, but the home page has this:
``NOTICE!!! As of 18 August, 15.825mHz frequency will temporarily move to 15.820mHz for testing.``.
** U S A [and non]. 15470-15475-15476-15480, finally able to detect the DRM test from Greenville with 8 kW, Aug 20 at 2005,
only S6-S9 peaks, but plenty enough to impossiblize any reception of LRA36, the poor unique Antarctican SW station which
don`t get no respect from the big guns (partly Argentina`s fault for not registering its M-F 18-21 usage with HFCC --- if it`s not
in HFCC, everyone not paying attention may assume it doesn`t exist; or if they are paying attention, may still pretend it doesn`t
exist). The DRM sked is 20-22 UT, started in honor of HFCC Dominican Republic which is about to wrap up, but it seems the
IBB/HCJB DRM experiment from Greenville is supposed to continue indefinitely; after all, this one is aimed at Europe, not DR,
nor is the 9400-9405-9410 test, aimed NW, not a direxion the regular antennas at Greenville are designed for.
While I was at it, looked for other DRM at 2005: 15275-15280-15285 HCJB with S9; nothing on 17865-17870-17875 from

sporadic-E enhanced.
** CANADA. Big het between 6160.0/6160.9, Aug 20 at 0549 with CBC in English. As Carlos Gonçalves just reported from
Portugal, CKZN is off-frequency, and here it clashes with CKZU, the two about equal level and inseparable [the only spelling
accepted by MS Word]. Normally they are never zero-beat, but maybe 15 Hz apart producing a fast ripple SAH. Still at 0606;
I should have checked during CBC News on the hour when they would have been // but unsynchronized. Someone must
have bumped the transmitter in St. John`s. Hope they get this fixed quickly but not counting on it.
** CUBA. RHC check Aug 19 at 0520: Spanish on 11760, 6120; English on 6010, 6060 and 6140, the latter sometimes in
Spanish instead. 6000 too weak in storm noise to evaluate.
Latest anomaly from RHC: Aug 20 at 0540 found 13790 still on the air in English, starting UT Thu mailbag show with Èd
Newman`. Checking other channels, 6010 was missing so probably same transmitter, but why? Forgot to change frequency
at 0500? Unable to change for some reason? Propagation experiment? 11 MHz from Cuba will not always propagate in the
nightmiddle, let alone 13. At this time also heard in English on 6060, while 6140 and 11760 were in Spanish. Also missing,
6120 normally in Spanish, and did not hear 6000 either at first, but it was there in Spanish at 0558, as was 6120, an echo
apart while Arnie was talking about the electrical grid.
** EAST TURKISTAN. Not much making it on 16m, Aug 19 at 0517, but second only to RFA Saipan on 17880 was 17720, music
and then German talk, fading and some flutter. Per Aoki, this is CRI at 05-07, 500 kW, 308 degrees to Europe via Kashgar.
** EQUATORIAL GUINEA. RNGE, 6250, Aug 20 at 0608 going from music to liners, Spanish announcement about jóvenes,
prosperidad en el futuro: dictatorial government propaganda. About equal level with Polisario 6300, a neat pair, but not always
both on and in at same time. As we are getting closer to equinox than solstice, reception should be holding up a bit later.
** INDONESIA. 9680 usually a mess of QRM among Taiwan, ChiCom jamming, and/or Indonesia; Aug 20 at 1350 continuous
gamelan concert was dominant, mixing with Asian-scale singing. At 1401, clearer M&W conversation in Indonesian, over
much weaker something. Aoki shows RRI only until 1300, but WRTH 2009 has it until 1500, so looks like the latter is
correct, at least today. Tho 250 kW, as a domestic service relay, it`s not included in the WRTH A-09 update. There is also
contradictory info about the azimuth for this.
** ROMANIA. 7305, August 20 at 0547 M&W in English concluding ``Society Today`` program discussing probation, RRI ID.
Not listed here in PWBR `2009` and RRI uses so many frequencies I don`t have them all memorized. This is the only semihour per day RRI is on 7305, 0530 via Galbeni, 300 kW, 300 degrees to Europe, and incidentally North America beyond.
** RUSSIA. 13870 with fairly good signal in Russian, Aug 20 at 1358, Arkady with schedule announcement, including 22
meters, 1400 6-pip time signal with some character, not just pure tones, and accurate compared to WWV a few minutes
later; Golos Rossii ID. Per Aoki it`s Moscow site at 190 degrees, 12-15.
** SERBIA [non]. Missing the last few evenings from 9675, IRS was back UT Aug 19 at 0030 check with IS (changed for the worse,
no longer as catchy?), opening English. Also at 0037 check UT August 20, altho it and VOR 9665 were much weaker with K=2.
SW service had seemed in limbo, but Dragan Lekic reports that a bad English translation on their website was the problem.
In fact, it should say ``THE ONLY SHORTWAVE STATION OF SERBIA WILL ALSO (!!!) CONTINUE BROADCASTING
THRU SATELLITE AND THE INTERNET``, i.e. still on SW at least thru yearend. But it`s not unusual for Bijeljina, Bosnia site
to break down for one reason or anothe.
9675, IRS reconfirmed in English at 0037 Aug 20. From past week`s monitoring, it may or may not be on, and even less
likely at 0100.
** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. 9385, Brother Scare via WWRB as I tuned by Aug 20 at 1342 was offering DE-15 shortwave
radios for a $75 donation. But it`s been sold by Amazon for less than a month at $49.99. Is only one semi-inch ``think``:

But will it pick up WWRB spurs? At 1345 was hearing het on approx. 9452 against Thailand 9455, previously tracked to 9385,
but too much noise now to be sure. Line(?) noise level has increased, perhaps tnx to lightning disturbing the transformers.
Altho storms are still coming and going, today`s logs are on the outside antenna between them.
** THAILAND. R. Thailand, which on Aug 17 was in English by mistake at 1330 on 9455, did not manage to check it on 18 or 19,
but Aug 20 at 1345 confirmed back in Thai; het on 9452 may be the spur again from WWRB, see SOUTH CAROLINA [non].
** U S A. WRMI was supposedly going to be more active on 9955 with WRN afternoon relays during the HFCC week, but
could not detect it here Aug 19 around 1730 or 2030.
This week`s first SW airing of WORLD OF RADIO 1474 confirmed on WRMI 9955, UT Thu Aug 20 at 0531, mixing with
DentroCuban pulse jamming; tnx a lot, Arnie!.
** U S A. 13110-SSB, Aug 20 at 0535, Perfect Pauline still has not learned not to say ``nautical smiles`` but certainly brought
a smile to my non-nautical face; marine weather for Atlantic, no doubt influenced by H. Bill; 0537 ID as WLO & KLB, ``now
standing by for calls, end of broadcast`` but nothing further heard on this frequency next couple minutes. I`m never sure
whether I am really hearing Mobile or Kent transmitter, but I suppose at this hour Washington would be more likely to
propagate on 13 MHz.
** U S A. The other night I observed that WRNO was still on the air only three hours a day, 0100-0400 on 7505; as if to prove
me wrong, UT Aug 20, 7505 was still on the air at 0545 with, what else, gospel rock; S9+22 signal, and still at 0604 but VERY
undermodulated: I could turn the volume control wide open and that was about right, but perilous when ontuning.
Next check at 1335, still/again on the air, 7505! Now the modulation is OK with music, and at 1337 live DJ announcement
from Taylor Duncan, with CDT timecheck, date August 20, and said from next week WRNO would start simulcasting on web
via http://www.wrno.org which we may already check; webcast would be 24 hours, and SW would be 12 hours a day.
I thought that was the URL he said, but no works; instead still http://www.wrnoworldwide.org/ which certainly has a new look
since last I checked, and link to 24 hour program schedule, claiming 7505 is 24 hours, at http://www.wrnoworldwide.org/
wrnoradio_Schedule.htm
which includes 30- or 60-minute newscasts at 0400, 1600 and 1700! Homepage also has news from BBC with their logo.
Plus CNN, ESPN and others; and a new blog since Aug 12, but trying to read the posts gets a 503 error.
Recheck at 1609, no modulation but carrier +USB, no LSB on 7505; not sure what that is.
** U S A. 15820, WWCR just barely audible here with no sporadic E enhancement Aug 19 at 1410, testing instead of 15825.
Christer Brunström in Sweden agrees it was on 15820 at 1300. Also on 15820 JBA at 2030 check. So when Friday 2028:30
comes with WORLD OF RADIO, I revise my advisory to check 15830 too.
For the third day, WWCR on 15820 instead of 15825, Aug 20 at 1404 check, just barely audible with no Es-enhancement.
** U S A. The IBB/HCJB DRM tests from Greenville supposed to start Aug 17 were reported delayed until Aug 18. The only
chance I had to check 15475 Aug 18 was around 2130, however, and no DRM heard. At 0030 Aug 19, the other test on
9400-9405-9410 was inblasting. Also Aug 19 at 2030 check, no DRM heard around 15475 nor anywhere else on 19m.
However, Brandon Jordan in Memphis says: ``15475 kHz IBB/HCJB DRM noted from 2018 to 2200 UT on Aug 19, although
very weak and only a few brief audio decodes.`` It is low-power and also liable to skip over.
** WESTERN SAHARA [non]. 6300, La Voz de la República Árabe Saharaui Democrática, via ALGERIA, Aug 20 at 0607
with soporific wake-up chanting, usual ute beeps on low side. About equal level with Equatorial Guinea 6250, a neat pair,
but not always both on and in at same time. As we are getting closer to equinox than solstice, reception should be holding
up a bit later.
UNIDENTIFIED. 11890, surprised to hear news in English at 1404 August 19, and as soon as ``BBC News`` IDed, cut off
the air at 1406*. Figured it was a regular transmission prolonged another 6 minutes for a bit more news as BBCWS has
been caught doing elsewhen, but --- no BBC at all scheduled on 11890 in any of the current online references. There is,
however, in once source not including WRTH, SLBC supposedly in Sinhala or Hindi, so possibly Ekala, but I think that is
really on 11905.
BBCWS news in English previously heard until 1406* on unlisted 11890, so checked earlier Aug 20: nothing audible at 1356.
Wolfgang Büschel suggests it was Woofferton tuning up for DW using handy BBC audio, i.e. DW scheduled in French from
1700 on 11890.
** AUSTRIA. 15595, Aug 18 at 1506 hymn in English `Ì will trust in you``, into language talk. Umlauts reminded me of
Hungarian, so I did not think it was Turkish, but so listed in Aoki as AWR at 1500-1530 only via Moosbrunn. Careful: at 1530
Vatican ecumenically takes over 15595.
** CANADA. 9625 with BBCWS at 0458 Aug 18, ID and promos, but it`s really the end of the first hour of CBC Overnight as
then mentioned in outro, now being carried on the NQ service, but no such ID before 0500 CBC news, just as CBC Radio
1. Anyhow, back on 9625 for sure ex-9755 excursion. Or should this be UK [non]?
** CHINA. Yay, heard one Firedrake music-only jamming frequency once again, tho only poorly, this time on 15755, Aug 18
at 1453 and still at 1506. Nothing heard on any of the previous/usual channels between 8 and 19 MHz. 15755 must be the
latest jump of Sound of Hope via Tajikistan in the 15.7 MHz range. I wonder if the lack of Firedrakes also means that many
other SOH transmissions have disappeared?
However, times do not match the Aug 18 0400 edition of Aoki showing:

** CUBA. RHC check Aug 18 at 1459 found 11760 already off as was 13780 just in time to clear 13775 for Austria via
Canada. Still on with RHC IS were 13760 and much stronger 13680 aimed usward from the other site.
** LIBYA. 17725, English talk about Africa fading out and in, Aug 18 at 1445; only poor at best, but certainly V. of Africa as
scheduled, and seldom heard. W and M with heavy accent. A little help from the solar flux would certainly audiblize it better,
but no signs of that. Perhaps approaching seasonal equinoxial conditions will assist instead. A few minutes later checked
for // 21695, but nothing audible on 13m. At 1502, 17725 had declined to a JBA carrier.
** U K [non]. 17640 with BBCWS news in English Aug 18 at 1503. Only fair and not always audible, but BBC-famished North
Americans may add this to possible frequencies: now scheduled as Ascension at 13-17, 114 degrees (and before at 08-13,
17640 is Seychelles, 270 degrees). See also CANADA
** U S A. VOA/IBB Greenville has finally followed my advice to cease interfering with itself by overlapping with Botswana at
1430 on 17585. Aug 18 at 1428 This Day in History segment was allowed to finish and then dropped carrier immediately at
1430:00* without any YDD signoff routine. Botswana takeup to continue same English hour should also have crash-started
at *1430:00 but not audible here as it occasionally is. I think they are warming up on 17575 instead.
** U S A. WWCR shows up on a different new frequency, 15820: announced plans to test 15830 this week instead of 15825,
but there it was really on 15820 instead, Aug 18 at 1408, VG S9+20 signal in preaching. Still 15820 at 1505 check. Trace of
squeal possibly at imagination-level, but not really a problem. Anyhow, I don`t think shifting 5 kHz up or down will have any
effect on the possible squealing. No other broadcasters are scheduled on 15820 or 15830 at any time, so it seems WWCR
may experiment freely.
** U S A. WWRB, 18770 = 2 x 9385 with Brother Scare, Aug 18 at 1447. I was still on the inside antenna and could hear it
even there, tho certainly stronger at 1510 check on outside antenna. I am still looking for anyone else to report DXing this.
HF sporadic E assistance one again in play, as evidenced also by WWCR 15820, WWV well heard on 20000. WWV is only
500 miles away, and simply will not be heard here on 20000 without Es.
** U S A [non]. 15460 with unID language, several speakers, Aug 18 at 1450. Rather than guess, I will look it up later: R.
Liberty in Georgian at 14-15; Aoki says Biblis, HFCC says Lampertheim, GERMANY anyway. I haven`t yet figured out how
to recognize Georgian right away; any tips with common words, phrases or characteristic phonemes?.
** ARGENTINA. Pleased to hear the RAE IS on 15344.0 or so as early as 1648 Aug 17; thought I heard them say `àtención``
once, but constant het from 15345, which must be Morocco. I was trying to measure 15344 more closely on the ATS-909
but at 1657 it had shifted much closer to 15345, still a lower-pitched het. 1700 6-pip timesignal and talk in unID language,
but too much hash from TV swish. By now I am not sure whether I am hearing Morocco in Arabic or Argentina in its extra
German broadcast, but one of them went off anyway at 1702, or at least there was no further het. I also had been distracted
by a signal on 15340; see ETHIOPIA [non].
** CANADA. 9755 with unexpected program in English, Aug 17 at 0052, lofi mix including classical music; 0057 outro as `Ìnside
the Music`` from CBC Radio 1 --- Has RCI finally come to its senses and put CBCR1 back on shortwave?! Not exactly.
At 0059 Radio-Canada ID, then CBC ID in unknown language, mentioning 9625 more than once, 0100 CBC News. OMG,
it`s the CBC NQ service on wrong frequency! Nothing on 9625; S9+20 on 9755, stronger than 9625 usually attains, so on
wrong antenna too? But squeezed by RFI 9750 GUF carrier and Spanish news modulation from 0100. 9755 is the frequency
used by RCI English to USA in the winter, despite lower MUFs, and is not supposed to be on at this hour in summer.
So what`s on 6100? At 0101, RCI harmonica fill music, undermodulated with hum, 0103 RCI ID mentioning The Link. 0104
Mandarin as scheduled.
9755 reception declining, but 0105 into another CBC program, probably In the Key of Charles. (BTW, there was no Outfront
at 0045 as online CBC schedule claims even on local Sundays.)
0151 recheck, 9755 still in music show, but now a fast SAH from open carrier? 0158, CBCNQ ID again as ``9625``, and
same in Inuktituk. 0200 sharp, RCI Spanish starts suddenly stronger on 9755, as scheduled for this hour, but still with
something under. After news at 0206 gave three frequencies, but the only one I caught was on the 31m band, 9640, certainly
incorrect --- not used since B-08 season and at 0000 only! Geez, are they screwed up in multiple ways.
Then El Castor Mensajero (The Messenger Beaver, i.e. mailbag show, featuring Cubans). BTW, 6100 also has Spanish this
hour but 5 minutes offset, and different Internal show anyway? Did not check. 9755 wrapping up ECM at 0258, still with fast
SAH from co-channel interference, then 0259 RCI off leaving weak signal, 0300 CBC News signature!
So not only was the CBCNQ service on the wrong frequency, but another transmitter in the hall at Sackville was on the
SAME frequency during this hour, a really close collision! NQ probably stayed on 9755 till 0505* but unchecked later. After
0200, 9625 would have been badly squeezed between Spain on 9620 and Spain/Costa Rica on 9630.
I did check the next morning and at 1325 nothing on 9755, but usual ripple SAH on 9625 indicating the always slightly-offfrequency CBCNQ was back, with Hmong dominant from FEBC Manila; see PHILIPPINES. To be sure, another check after
FEBC off at 1400: Yes, weak CBC news in English.
Also next evening UT Aug 18 at 0037 check, nothing on 9755, but weak signal on 9625. I did not notify Sackville about
having NQ on 9755 the night before.
** CROATIA. 9925 via Germany, kept an ear on VOC Aug 17 from 0207 looking for the English half-hour as per EiBi and
Aoki, but only heard pop music, presumably in Croatian until 0230 when opened Voz de Croacia in Spanish. Maybe there
was a quick English newscast at 0200 I already missed? Or just forget it for Sundays; or August holidays.
Why does everyone in Europe think they have to go on holidays in August? Wouldn`t it be less disruptive to stagger
absences from May thru September at least? WRTH A-09 update does not attempt to break down foreign language times;
it`s all just Croatian/Other.
** CUBA. Will RHC ever resume its first English broadcast of the day at 2030? Not yet; Aug 16 at 2055 check, just Spanish
on 11760 // 11770 et al. Could not hear 17660. Blame the Honduran oligarchy.
RHC check at 0117 Aug 17, found 13790 and 13760 the only signals audible on 22m. At 0120: Spanish on 5965, 6060,
6120, 6140, 9600 11760 and an echo away on 13760, at the moment talking about the Wizard of Oz; weak signal with
different music in Spanish on 6000, presumably the only English-service channel running, useless.
En Contacto, the DX program ran from 0136 past 0151 UT Monday and I listened to most of it on 9600 which was strong but
somewhat distorted. Featured monthly report from Pedro Sedano of AER with items including WRTH update, RRI Enescu
contest, CyBC, Turquía. He takes a lot of time and trouble to spell out unfamiliar addresses, apparently assuming people
will want to write to the stations.
13880 mixing product stronger than usual, Aug 17 at 1348 in talk about Barbados, 13680 leaping over 13780, both extremely
strong; while leapfrog the other way on 13580 was JBA.
Secret RHC midday service reconfirmed Aug 17 at 1547 on 11760, 11800 distorted, 11690; barely audible on 5965, and
6000 which were the only stations audible on 49-50m, not even WBOH 5920.
** DOMINICAN REPUBLIC [and non]. Pleased NOT to hear DRM test on 15470-15475-15476-15480 as previously scheduled
by IBB/HCJB Greenville starting Aug 17 for HFCC, when checked at 2025, nor anywhere else on 19m (tho ANTARCTICA
was not making it either, its unique low-power frequency should be respected!).
11700-11705-11710, HCJB DRM at 1546 Aug 17. Kim Elliott says this is a feeder to affiliates in Brasil. I wonder how many
are really using it and how many ordinary DRM listeners there are? Also noted 15275-15280-15285 HCJB DRM around
2030 as usual.
17865-17870-17875, big DRM signal Aug 17 at 1622, TDF testing from Guiana French to HFCC in Dominican Republic.
These tests do not appear on the DRM/DX schedule, but are mentioned on linked fora, supposed to be Aug 18-20 at 16-18,
Aug 21 at 16-21, but already going Aug 17!
A reminder that Jeff White is reactivating his Radio Discovery from Punta Cana HFCC this week Aug 17-22 on 4730 with
only 100 watts to a half-wave dipole, testing WinDRM, SSB and AM. See details on DXLD 9-055. On the afternoon of Aug
17, Jeff told me they were just setting it up, ``We could be on tonight, but I`m not sure yet``.
I`ve urged him to let it run all night. This should be quite a challenge to DX anywhere, especially here around all the T-storm
noise. Do they manage to evade CODAR, and military ute SSBs on both sides? BTW, the tropstorms and hurricane in the
area did not cause any of the delegations to cancel, Jeff says.
** EGYPT. Awful modulation from R. Cairo continues: 9915, Aug 17 at 0050, level S9+20 but extremely distorted yet muffled
audio, useless, supposedly Spanish at 0045-0200 only.
6290, distorted muezzin, audio also cutting out at 0118, better modulation than 9915, but not by much. 6290 still on and
audible with distorted Arabic news at 0402. In fact Aoki shows it`s continuous 1900-0700, 250 kW, 315 degrees from Abis;
targets Eu and NAm thruout tho possible span here is shorter in summer. Aoki also titles this service ‘El-Bernameg Al-Aam’
--- which means?.
** EQUATORIAL GUINEA. 15190, Aug 17 at 1554 with revival music, undermod talk in English, has to be R. Africa, the
home away from home for convict Tony Alamo.
** ETHIOPIA [non]. While monitoring Argentina on 15344, Aug 17 at 1643, noticed flute music, unID language talk on poor
15340, 1656 HOA(?) singing, but off by 1658. Since Morocco is on 15345 at this hour, must be something else. Looked up
later in Aoki, it`s the Monday-only 1600-1700 broadcast of EOTC Holy Synod Radio, clandestine to Ethiopia in Amharic, via
Samara, Russia, 200 kW, 188 degrees.
** FRANCE. 17850, thought I had something exotic with Horn of Africa vocal music Aug 17 at 1636, but 1637 into French amid
crowd noises, poor signal, 1641 hilife music. It`s just RFI`s service via Issoudun to Africa at 16-18. See also DOMINICAN
REPUBLIC [non]
** MEXICO. 6185, XEPPM. R. Educación noted in the clear Aug 17 at 0119 with talk in Spanish, but not enough signal vs
the T-storm noise level. Current listings show ÀDM` UAE until 0100*, then open window until Vatican at *0205; or is UAE
really on 6185 at all? Not per Aoki and EiBi.
** NEW ZEALAND. Meant to mention that altho RNZI was absent from analog 11725, Aug 14 after 0500, it was back the
next night and every night since including Aug 17 check at 0524.
** PHILIPPINES. Checking 9625 to see whether CBCNQ was back from its excursion to 9755 the night before, see CANADA,
Aug 17 at 1326 heard its rippling SAH against dominant signal in Hmong, which is FEBC Manila, confirmed as such with
announcer giving P and E-mail addresses, http://www.hmongradio.febc.com --- then 1331 Jesus Saves IS on chimes/vibes
several times, 1332 song. Scheduled to go from Hmong to Khmu at 1330.
** ROMANIA. RRI, 9580, UT Mon Aug 17 at 0051 with birdlike vocalizations by human singer, into Romanian Rhapsody
tune. Maybe Skylark show; love their folk music.
Also ran across another Tiganeshti broadcast, 9645, at 0223 during classical violin/piano music, het de perpetual Brazilian
spoiler Bandeirantes, 0226 Spanish announcement from RRI. 9645 also used for 0300 English.
** SAUDI ARABIA. 17560, poor with non-buzzing muezzins (two of them, or multitracked?) at 1623 Aug 17, 1635 Arabic
talk; bothered by stronger but not very strong carrier on 17565 from Greenville about to start Creole at 1630. PWBR ‘2009`
says 17560 is BSKSA Holy Quràn Station, and per Aoki that is still correct, 1600-1755 at 270 degrees. Also noticed better
signal on non-buzzing 15205 was already muezzening at 1655, in case one wants to nap before noon. Probably // but not
confirmed as such. Meanwhile Sawt al-Buzz much stronger at 1555 on 15435 // no buzz on 15225.
** SERBIA [non]. Since IRS had been confirmed on 9675 the last few days before 0100, I expected to hear it again UT
Monday August 17 --- but nothing there at 0035 when the 6-daily 0030 English should have appeared. Propagation OK as
VOR 9665 Pridnestrovye was fine next door. So is IRS phasing itself out, gone, or just sporadic? 24 hours later, UT Aug
18 at 0030 check, 9675 still vacant, unlike VOR 9665. So is anyone still hearing IRS any time on 9675 to NAm, scheduled
0000-0130, or 6100 to Europe between 1800 and 2130? They have hinted at closing down the SW service permanently,
staying on Internet and satellite.
** SOUTH CAROLINA [non]. Brother Scare monitoring Aug 17: at 1542 on 17485 (which he thinx is 17435) via Germany, running
6 seconds behind 13845 WWCR. Recheck at 1703, 13845 had changed to Pastor Melissa Scott, but when next I noticed scarcely
2 minutes later at 1704, it was B.S. again! Unfortunately, I missed the axual transition. Just as Rick Barton, AZ, has previously
monitored, for some reason at 1700 they change to PMS for a few minutes, then back to BS for another hour(?).
** THAILAND. I can`t believe how many anomalies I run across by random tuning (and knowing what is supposed to
happen). On 9455, Aug 17 at 1333, heard news by YL in English, accented, Thai? 1335 on to global news about Nigeria,

nice surprise, but probably a tape mixup or something. 1357 cut to open carrier, 1358 announcements really in Thai, 1359:30
cut carrier, 1400 back on much weaker, 132 degrees. So what language then, English again, or Thai makeup swap?.
** TURKEY [non]. At least Sackville managed to get the right program on 7325 [cf. CANADA; unlike the entire month of
March], VOT in English, UT Monday Aug 17 at 0325, VG signal with YL lecturing on circumcision, how the Turx make a big
deal out of it as a coming-of-age public family ceremony for boys, rather than getting it over with as infants, if at all. How
barbaric. Appropriately paused frequently for sad, wailing music. It seems high season for this is spring, and preferred days
of week are Thu, Sat and Sun. 0329 ending this feature `Òur Culture,`` into next one, ``Blue Voyage``, a travelog about
some bay, with OM Sedef, and that would have been more pleasant to listen to if I had time.
Did recheck at 0350 sign-off, but stays on air with multiple plays of VOT IS variations on piano, something I enjoy hearing in
full occasionally; 0356 started interspersing French-only La Voix de la Turquie IDs as if that language were about to start --- but
not of course, on this or any SW frequency, off at 0358* uncovering weak B-B-C chimes from Rampisham starting Arabic.
** U S A. Seems WRNO is still running only 3 hours a day, and mostly rock music instead of preaching, which is fine with me,
but it seems slow to reach its potential after a year back on the air, and never on reserved daytime channel 15590. Aug 17
at 0114, 7505 with good music modulation, steady S9+22, 0116 ID as WRNO Worldwide, gospel rock with refrain sounding
like ``You Are God``, which would seem somewhat blasphemous, and nothing about grokking mentioned. Signal had faded
down a lot by 0400 sign-off, carrier to 0401:30*.
** U S A. WTJC, 9370v, still putting out spurs, Aug 17 at 1343, weak on approx. 9345 but // 9370 matching Scourby
modulation peaks; also a trace on 9395, but too much splash from WWRB 9385. The weaker spurs correlate with a weaker
fundamental at the moment.
** U S A. WWCR announced from Aug 17 it would test 15830 instead of 15825 because of `squeal` problem, but several
chex here that day found it always on 15825: at 1351 music at S9+10, not enough to overcome nearby T-storm crashes;
1407 with preacher; VG signal at 1646, no squeal audible but some hum, also at 1703. Final check at 2025, sporadic
E-enhancement was over and just barely audible, still on 15825. See also SOUTH CAROLINA [non]
** U S A. The convicted Tony Alámo still going on WINB, as I tuned by 13570, Aug 17 at 1543, interfering with CODAR as
WINB faded in and out.
** U S A. Usually inaudible when jammed and on Caribeam, WRMI 9955 becomes audible when switches to NW antenna
toward us, such as happens Sunday evenings only, UT Mondays 0200-0430 with two hours of Wire Light infomercials, and
then a semihour of La Biblia Explicada, as per current sked, as heard Aug 17 at 0219 over jamming two YLs discussing metrics,
what`s hot; 0406 preaching about agentes satánicos. Still jammed at both times, despite non-exile content, but atop it.
UNIDENTIFIED. 9870, besides AIR Vividh Bharati service via Bangalore with Indian music at 0048 Aug 17, there was cochannel QRM from something else. Altho it does collide with various other stations later, such as Turkey in Spanish after
0100, nothing listed before then in HFCC, Aoki, EiBi, WRTH A-09.
** CHINA [and non]. No stand-alone Firedrake heard on usual frequencies Aug 16 around 1230. But at 1238 did hear it on
12040 mixing with CNR1 jamming and VOA target; and on 11710 // CNR1 jamming mixing with N Korean music, Commies
vs Commies! But really targeting Taiwan, also producing subaudible heterodynes.
** JAPAN [and non]. NHKWNRJ must be in August-vacation mode, with canned repeat programming instead of new shows.
World Interactive should be the Sunday feature, but Aug 16 at 1226 on 9695 ending dramatic narrative with music, sound
effects, extremely emotional story about a girl and her mother getting (atomic?) bombed in August, outro title as ``Face of
Gizo (sp?)`` part 1, to be continued next week with part 2. Reception on 9695 intended for Asia was axually better than on
// 6120 via Canada to NAm. 1229 sign-off as usual mentioned frequency only for the next English transmission, at 1310. In
NAm it would have been more helpful to mention frequency for next transmission to here at 1400.
** SPAIN [non]. 11910, REE with Castilian news at 1233 Aug 16, good signal and modulation punch you do not get from Costa
Rica, or even from Noblejas. This is the relay via Xiàn, CHINA, at 12-14, 120 kW, 138 degrees, so aimed nowhere near USward
and not often heard. Roughly one second behind Cariari on 15170. Recheck at 1251 found 11910 still audible but underneath
WYFR open carrier prior to its *1300. This week`s Amigos de la Onda Corta DX program from REE discussed the relay exchange,
pointing out that they have two alternative feed routes to Beijing, one via satellite, the other some complicated landline setup.
** U K [non]. 9605, surprised to hear BBCWS in English, not scheduled here, Aug 16 at 1257 with sports news, 1258
promos, 1259 theme, 1300 timesignal mixing with others, opening in Chinese. Singapore must have turned on not only
transmitter but wrong modulation early. After 1300 of course CNR1 jamming also on 9605.
** U S A. We still have no idea of the exact hours Brother Scare is now on WWCR-2 instead of DGS/PMS, but not only on
13845: Aug 16 at 1210 check, 5935 was still on the air and broadcasting BS. Scheduled switchover time to 13845 is 1200,
so maybe this was an error.
WWCR has announced from Aug 17 it will shift from 15825 to 15830 to see if that gets rid of the `squeal` I have occasionally
reported. But I think it comes out of the transmitter, as it is only heard when WWCR is extremely strong, rather than
heterodyne from another emission. Aug 16 already at 1245, 15825 was very strong with sporadic-E boost, starting ``Sold
Out for Jesus``. I could not hear a squeal this time, tho there was a bit of a `frying` sound underneath. Note that 15830 will
presumably be in use for WORLD OF RADIO Fridays at 2028 until further notice.
** U S A. The spurs from WTJC 9370v moved in a bit from 30 kHz separation: Aug 16 at 1303, distorted spurs around 9345
and 9395 matching fundamental musical modulation, not as strong as before, but neither was 9370. The higher one`s
spread was bothering another gospel huxter on 9400, worse when WTJC became screaming preacher at 1316 check. 9400
victim scheduled as FEBC Manila in Chinese at 09-14, Christians vs Christians!.
** VENEZUELA [non]. Sunday Aug 16 chex for `Àló, Presidente`` via CUBA: at 1413, open carriers on 13750 and 17750,
two of the scheduled frequencies, but nothing on the other three, 11690, 12010, 13680. At 1429 found that 13750 was off but
17750 still on with OC, same at 1436. Tired of listening to nothing, did not recheck until 1530 when modulation had started
on 17750. Sounded like Chávez so assumed A,P had started, but it was only a clip in news, from RNV? 13750 still off, no
12010 or 13680 either, but barely audible on 11690 which is always weakest here. Meanwhile, separate secret RHC midday
programming continued on 13760.
Next check at 1641 found A,P really underway with Hugo and the audience, on 17750 and by now 13750 had come back
on the air, as well as 12010 finally, and 11690 audible, still no 13680. Separate RHC still going on 11760. One more check
at 1732: A,P VG on 17750, 13750, 12010; 11690 mostly RTTY but Hugo faded up long enough to reconfirm it to; and 11760
still separate RHC.
UNIDENTIFIED. Lots of presumed Chinese OTH radar segments as I bandscanned August 16. First at 1210 ranged (approx.
in all cases) 5860-5880, with BBCWS English bothered amid on 5875, but the pulses went off at 1211; then found they had
shifted down to 5780-5855. In next few minutes also found similar sounds: 6540-6590, 6830-6880, 6950-6995 – careful to stay
below 7000? And at 1215, 7575-7630 bothering VOA on 7575. These average 50 kHz in bandwidth. The 5860-5880 one may
have extended beyond 5900 but obscured by broadcast signals. Due to their behavior, I am pretty sure these are transmitted
from overseas, but I do have plenty of local QRM-producers, so it would be nice if others tried to log these, mostly out-of-band
in the 5-8 MHz frequency range. If they are from China, bound to be much stronger in E Asia, W N America. ###

Em um rápido passeio de fim de semana pela cidade de Araras-SP na casa do amigo Mauricio, pudemos juntos realizar
um BAND SCAN em FM.
Todas as escutas foram realizadas apenas no período noturno algo entre 21:00 e 03:00, único horário este disponível
dentre as outras atividades seculares.
As escutas foram realizadas apenas dentro da residência utilizando somente a antena telescópica dos respectivos
equipamentos. Como faltou tempo e do lado de fora percebemos a possibilidade de ouvirmos um número ainda maior de
emissoras, preferimos ficar apenas no interior da residência para possibilitar um BAND SCAN completo de ponta a ponta...
Foram sintonizadas ao todo 90 emissoras, dentre estas, 89 identificadas pela paciência em esperarmos para ouvir a ID da
emissora, bem como telefonemas de ouvintes e propagandas da região ... por sorte a maioria fornecia o nome por meio de
vinhetas várias vezes... mesmo assim um trabalho lento porém prazeroso.

Uma freqüência da HCJB, em português deverá permanecer
em Pifo até meados de novembro de 2009.
Através da lista Cumbre DX, o Bob Padula da Austrália, informou ter recebido, em 112 de agfosto passado, uma
correspondência do Allen Graham da HCJB, informando que a emissora cessará suas transmissões em Pifo do Equador,
no dia 30 de setembro de 2009, com exceção de uma freqüência, em português, que permanecerá transmitindo desde Pifo
até meados de novembro.
Estas alterações estão ocorrendo em função da construção de um aeroporto na região, obra esta que está obrindo a HCJB
a re-locar todas suas transmissões oriundas do local.
O Allen Graham, acrescenta que as decisões administrativas jás foram tomadas, mas que ele ainda não pode fazer nenhum
anúncio das medidas até que a decisão oficial seja entregue á imprensa.
Dexista Sueco, capta LRA36 muito bem...
Muito interessante a narrativa do Henrik Klemetz, dexista do sudoeste da Suécia, que informou a través da lista HCDX, que
enquanto apanhava framboesas e mirtilos numa mata que circunda sua residência, ele e a esposa, mantinham um receptor
Lextronix E5, sintonizado na LRA36, e somente com a antena telescópica do rádio, a conseguiram captar inicialmente com
alguma pobreza de sinal, mas com o passar do tempo, este foi melhorando a ponto de lhes oferecer uma excelente audição
da música “ El Condor passa” ... Dexismo é algo inigualável... lendo as palavras do Henrik, tivemos a plena sensação da
cena, realmente bucólica e muito interessante.
Voz da Turquia é mesmo uma excelente pagadora de QSL.
Os dexistas; Alexandre Deves Sailer de Viamão – RS e o Rudolf W. Grimm de São Berbardo –
SP, informaram através da lista a qualidade de excelente pagadora de QSLs que é a Rádio A
Voz da Turquia. Esta emissora aspresenta o seguinte esquema de transmissão: Para Amércia
do Norte, Em Inglês: em 5.975Khz às 0300-0400 UTC, em 7.325Khz às 0300-0400 UTC, em
9.830Khz às 2200-2300 UTC; Para América Central, Em Inglês: em 5.975 Khz às 0300-0400
UTC, Em Espanhol: em 9.770 Khz às 0100-0200 UTC; Para América do Sul, Em Espanhol: em

HCJB fazendo testes em Ondas Curtas Digitais.
A HCJB Global Technology Center, sediada em Elkhart, IN, E.U.A., em cooperação com o International Broadcasting
Bureau, iniciou uma série de emissões digitais de ensaio, em Ondas Curtas, no dia 17 agosto passado. Nestas emissões
eles estão utilizando transmissores de fabricação IBB, instalações na costa leste da E.U.A, operando com uma potência
média de cerca de 8 DRM kW utilizando uma antena rômbica direcionada para a Europa e uma outra antena log periódica
direcionada para a América do Norte. As emissões não tem um prazo determinado para a duração e eles esperam receber

O Próximo “ Dia de Santa Helena”
O próximo “ Dia de Santa Helena” , quando ocorrerá a emissão especial anual da emissora, data tão aguardada pelos
dexistas de todo o mundo, ocorrerá no próximo dia 14 de novembro de 2009.
As emissões ocorrerão, na freqüência de 11.092,5 kHz no modo USB, dentro dos seguintes horários e destinação:
De 2000 ás 2100 UTC, para a Índia e para o Sudeste Asiático; de 2100 ás 2200 UTC, para o Japão e para a Ásia, de
2200 ás 2330 UTC, para a Europa e de 2330 ás 0100, para a América do Norte, América Central e Caribe.
A Rádio Santa Helena informa que já confeccionou a nova versão dos cartões QSL, para 2009, os quais forma patrocinados
pelo JSWC, que é um conceituado Clube de Ondas Curtas do Japão, patrocínio confirmado pelo Sr. T. Ohtake do JSWC.
Eles também informam que não serão aceitos Informes de recepção por E-Mail, e que os informes deverão ser enviados
impreterivelmente, por via postal, acompanhados de um valor para a postagem de retorno, que no caso de países europeus
deverá ser de 5 euros e nos demais 3 ou mais dólares. Acrescentam que os que forem enviados com gravações em anexo,
as mesmas não serão devolvidas.

e informam que as duas últimas linhas do endereço, devem ser escritas exatamente como mostrado no endereço divulgado.
Rádio Cairo melhora o áudio da transmissão em português.
O Ivandro da Cruz |Neves, de Martinópolis, em São Paulo, constatou, nos últimos
dias, uma significativa melhora nas condições do áudio da transmissão que a Rádio
Cairo, efetua diariamente, em 9.360 kHz. Ele ouviu a emissora de 2215 ás 2330
UTC e verificou que a locução era perfeitamente entendível, fato que não ocorria
anteriormente com esta emissão.
HCJB antecipa desmontagem do sítio transmissor de Pifo.
Com a antecipação da abertura do novo Aeroporto de Quito, a HCJB, se viu obrigada a modificar toda a estratégia de
desmontagem do site de transmissões de Pifo, que anteriormente era prevista para 01 de abriul de 2010, e q

devido a esta antecipação será realizada entre setembro de novembro de 2009.
Assim sendo, todas transmissões da HCJB, baseadas em Pifo, deverão ser encerradas no dia 30 de setembro de 2009, com
exceção das transmissões em português, as quais deverão ser encerradas em meados de novembro de 2009. Segundo
Wayne Pederson, presidente da HCJB Global: “O modo como as pessoas consomem mídia mudou”, e portanto, temos
com esta alteração, a oportunidade de mudar para sistemas de distribuição, como por satélite, Internet e FM podcasting.
O fechamento das transmissões em Ondas Curtas, para a América Latina acabou se transformando numa boa estratégica
pois incrementaremos a implantação de estações locais de rádio FM em toda a região e em todo o mundo” .
Tropical Bands Monitor foi atualizado.
O DSWCI - Danish Shortwave Club International, informa que atualizou, em 02 de agosto passado o “ Tropical Bands

A RADIOHAUS já está organizando a FENARCOM que ocorrerá em 2010, e em breve deverá anunciar o calendário com
toda a programação do evento mais esperado pelos Radioamadores e amantes da Radiocomunicação.
No Site da ICOM, já podemos ver anunciado para 23-25 de julho de 2010. O responsável pela organização do evento,

Rádio Super Boa Vontade retornou aos 49 metros.
O dexista Édison Bocorny Jr., confirmou o retorno da Super Boa Vontade nos 49 metros em 6160 Khz, pois a captou na
cidade de Capão da Canoa, á beira mar, com um sinal frato, mas permitindo a demodulação.
Family Rádio chegando forte.
O Arthur A Raimundo, de Araçatuba, em São Paulo, informa que a Family Radio está chegando forte nos últimos dias, e
em mais frequências do que o informado em seu próprio schedule. Ela emite em 7520 e 7430 kHz, mas respectivamente,
pela manhã e pelo final da tarde no Brasil, horários difíceis para captação de 41 metros. De qualquer forma, a emissão
geralmente é dos Estados Unidos (Okeechobbe, Florida), pois nesse horário fatalmente é uma emissão dirgida às Américas.

NHK World - Rádio Japão, excelente pagadora de QSLs.
O Rogério Ferreira, de Barão de Cocais, em Minas Gerais, e o Fabiano Henrique, de
Niterói, no Rio de Janeiro, nos informam que a NHK World - Rádio Japão, é mesmo uma
excelente pagadpora de QSLs.
Eles receberam correspondências da emissora, com os respectivos cartões QSL, e mais
cartões postais, Guia de programação da emissora, folheto com cançõex japonesas
traduzidas para o português, e informes dee receção padronizados. A emissora do outro
lado do mundo está de parabéns pela atenção com seus ouvintes.
