On Saturday, September 22,
the WHS Marching Band traveled to Socastee High School
to compete in the annual
Beach Band Blast. Though the
sun was beating down on the
band through their thick
uniforms, it didn’t faze them.
The band was awarded 1st
place drum major, 1st place
drum line and percussion, 1st
place color guard, 1st place
music, and a superior rating in the 1A division. “We did really well for our
size and it was a great start to our season” said Band Captain, Mary
Sinclair Filchak. Woodwind
officer, CJ Gerber added, “We
performed well. I think we
have a lot of potential for this
year.”
The band has their next competition Saturday at White
Knoll. Awesome job marching
Warriors and good luck
Saturday.
Parents…Interims were given to students on
Wednesday and Thursday.

Last week in the science classes, several labs and demonstrations were done to show
the students the entertaining side of science. Mrs. Noyes took her chemistry classes
outside to demonstrate what happens when Mentos is added to a two-liter bottle of
Coke. Within moments, the soda began shooting into the air caused by the chemical
reaction that occurred. Her students also performed their own lab dealing with physical and chemical changes. Split into groups, the students performed two procedures:
one where they mixed two chemicals and watched the change, and another where
they put a capsule into boiling water to see what would happen. In Ms. Stephenson’s
biology classes, students learned the parts of a microscope and how to use one. They
were required to look into a microscope at an “E” written on a piece of paper. The
students described what they saw at various magnifications. These labs helped
students understand the material they learned and how to
work in a lab
while having
fun at the
same time.

On Wednesday, September 19, Ms. Stephenson’s Anatomy and Physiology classes
went to the Bodies Revealed exhibit at Broadway at the Beach. This exhibit carries
preserved bodies and parts to let observers see the details and definitions of organs
and other parts of the body. Senior Justin Shaver said, “I enjoyed the trip. I feel it
enlightened me on the inner workings in our bodies.” Senior Stephen Stewart added,
“It was very interesting to see what the body looked like on the inside.” This was a
great beginning to the Anatomy and Physiology class as they will begin to dissect cats
soon.

In this issue, we feature Mrs.
Jenna Henderson, who teaches
Honors and CP Physical Science
and Biology. Mrs. Henderson is
originally from Williamsport,
Pennsylvania. She received her
bachelors degree in Biology at
Lycoming College and her
Masters of Arts in Teaching at
Coastal Carolina University.
Before coming to Waccamaw,
she taught for three years at
Carolina Forest. Mrs. Henderson is
married and has a mixed lab
named Macy. Besides teaching,
she loves watching movies with
her husband and attending football and basketball games. Her
passion for science and her love
for kids led her to teaching and
she hopes that her passion will
excite the students she teaches
to get passionate about science
as well. Mrs. Henderson says, “I’m
excited to be a Warrior!”
One of many clubs and organizations at WHS is TADA,
which stands for Teens Against Drugs and Alcohol. The goal
of TADA is to encourage students to remain drug and alcohol
free and help their peers to do the same. Some students fall
to drugs because of negative peer pressure. Hopefully with
TADA, students will stop doing drugs and alcohol because of
positive peer pressure.
The Gospel Choir is a team of students working together to
worship and lead others in a positive manner.
This year, the Gospel Choir and TADA will combine. Everyone isn't perfect, which is why we want to stick together in
being drug free. “I think the Gospel Choir and TADA should
be able to combine. We should come together and help
others to stop doing drugs. If we all get on one accord, we
would be able to help each other out,” Shakell Byrd, Vice
President of the Gospel Choir says.
Our goals are:
1. Be positive examples.
2. Serve in the school and community.
3. Build upon a faith based foundation.
Not only will we aim to decrease the use of drugs and
alcohol, we will also try to decrease discipline problems on
our campus as well.
TADA will meet on Thursday, October 4th, after school in
Room 405. I encourage everyone to come and join TADA.
I am looking forward to a great year!

Imani Atkins Named to 2012-2013
National Youth Advisory Board
Information provided by Ms. Donna Britton
Congratulations to Junior Imani Atkins who has been named to the 2012-2013 Souper Bowl of Caring
National Youth Advisory Board. She is one of 11 students from nine states chosen from a competitive
national application process to serve as a member on the board. Imani said she got involved in Souper
Bowl of Caring1 through a family member and has participated in the organization through Optimism
Mentoring and Preventive Services of Georgetown. Being on the Advisory Board will allow her to take a
larger leadership role in the organization.
Imani attended the organization’s national youth leadership training in Columbia, SC and will return in December to learn
more about being an advocate for the organization. “I want to stop hunger in this community and I need your help to do it,”
Imani says.
WHS has been involved in Souper Bowl of Caring for the past four years through the leadership of Blake Graham, a 2012
graduate.
Souper Bowl of Caring is a national movement of organizations and compassionate individuals working together to fight hunger and poverty on or around
1
the time of the Super Bowl football game. Since the program started in 1990, volunteers have collected more than $91 million with 100 percent of all donations going directly to community food banks, soup kitchens or other charities chosen by each group. Volleyball Dominating Region
By Ainsleigh Boothe, Pictures by Matt Lee
Last Thursday, all three volleyball teams (B-Team, JV, and
Varsity) traveled to Aynor and won all three matches. Varsity
played a close 3-1, with the last game ending 31-29. Melaina
Moore led with fourteen kills, Taylor Foster followed with ten
kills and Mags Grafe with seven kills. The Lady Warriors
ended Aynor’s varsity team’s undefeated streak in the region.
On Monday, JV and the B-Team played Carvers Bay’s JV at
home. JV won in a quick 2-0 match and the B-team held on
but lost 0-2. JV player Ora Parker Eddy led serving with nine
aces, followed by Kate Snelson and Leea Whetstone with
three aces. Ora Parker Eddy, Kate Snelson, and Maddy Crowe
all had one kill.
On

Warriors vs. Chiefs
By Aariona Wright
Last Thursday, JV traveled to North Myrtle Beach, excited to get back in action after their bye week. They added
another win to their record, with a score of 22-7. North Myrtle Beach led the first quarter, but the Warriors didn’t
trail too far behind as Kevin Gasque scored a touchdown. Tied in the second quarter, Tyriq Grant picked up another touchdown for the Warriors, putting them in the lead. Third quarter remained mutual as no scores were made, but a suspenseful
battle for the ball was attempted as North Myrtle Beach intercepted the ball. Then tight end, Collin Floyd, took back possession of the
ball by causing a fumble. With the Warriors up 14-7, North Myrtle Beach tried to gain another touchdown but cornerback Je’Mon
Smalls’ interception helped Kelton Grant score another touchdown. The Warriors celebrated their win as their current record now
stands at 2-1.

Whirlwinds hold Waccamaw to 65 offensive yards in 50-0 shutout
After a three-game winning streak, Waccamaw football seemed to have put itself back on the map. The only
problem? Lack of stiff competition. The Warriors’ previous three opponents – Green Sea-Floyds, Creek Bridge, and
Hannah-Pamplico – combine for a 3-12 record following Waccamaw’s 55-0 loss to Timmonsville last Friday.
A 33-27 victory the previous week against Hannah-Pamplico saw Waccamaw compile 280 yards rushing and average 8.8 yards per
carry. But last week, the Waccamaw running backs were surrounded by a bevy of defenders on every play. With senior change-of-pace
back Jeffron Smalls undergoing surgery for a broken leg yesterday, Whirlwind defenders keyed in on the Warriors’ leading rusher Jalen
Simmons, giving up just 21 yards on 10 carries to the sophomore. Not many opportunities were provided in the passing game, as
Waccamaw quarterback Jack Monroe attempted just seven passes -- completing two to tight end Rob Ferraro – for 41 yards.
Waccamaw lost three fumbles as a team – two by Simmons and one by Raishawn Mitchell – and two of them were returned over 70
yards the other way by Timmonsville’s defense, one that hasn’t allowed a touchdown in two consecutive games.
The Warrior defense could do little to halt the Whirlwind offense, one that entered the game averaging 47.5 points per contest.
Donovan Syndab led the team in tackles with 11 (two assists) and also forced a fumble. Defensive lineman Harley Temlin – who lived a
defensive lineman’s dream against Hannah-Pamplico when a he scored a 99-yard touchdown – tallied five tackles and two tackles for
loss.
Tonight, Waccamaw will travel to Mullins for the first of a string of five straight region games. The Auctioneers won last year’s matchup
by a 42-12 margin, but enter this season’s contest with a 1-4 record.
