With its one-year break, the Street Fest has had a chance to reconnect and rebuild ties with the Sacramento community and its leaders, before rising again like the mystical Phoenix. The Phoenix, a powerful symbol of the rebirth, is a large, grand bird, much like an eagle or peacock. It is brilliantly colored in reds, purples, and yellows, as it is associated with the rising sun and fire. Radiant and shimmering, the Phoenix lives for several hundred years before it dies by bursting into flames. It is then reborn from the ashes, to start a new, long life. Just like the Phoenix, the Pacific Rim Street Fest shimmers and shines with the many colorful costumes, music, entertainment, and arts of the Asian Pacific Island countries and cultures. From the ashes of legend to the actual grassy fields of Southside Park, the Street Fest is happy to be back! Carissa Nakata designed our stunning phoenix art for this year’s Pacific Rim Street Fest poster, t-shirt, and program. She shares information about herself and her work: “I am an illustrator and designer currently in my senior year at Cal State Fullerton. Before moving to Southern California, I lived in Sacramento my entire life and was a Pacific Rim Street Fest volunteer for four years. I feel fortunate to have experienced such cultural diversity and Asian-American pride growing up in this community. As an artist and life-long learner, I will continue to incorporate my life experiences and creative vision into my work.” For more on Carissa and her work go to https://carissanakata.carbonmade.com 4 Pacific Rim Street Festival 2016 23 Welcome Message rd Welcome to the Twenty-third Annual Pacific Rim Street Festival (PRSF) Celebration. After taking a break in 2015, WE ARE BACK with a new location and date. Our theme this year is a “Phoenix” which represents rebirth and re-emergence. It was designed by Carissa Nakata, a former volunteer who is now in college. Vision and Dream: Our festival continues to carry on Frank Fat’s vision and dream—to learn about each other’s culture and appreciate our similarities and differences—and be a community together. THANK YOU to everyone involved with the planning and coordination of this event: The Planning Committee, the Volunteers, the Sponsors, and the Fund Raising Team. What great TEAMWORK! Enjoy all of the festivities—Music and entertainment, food, purchase a PRSF t-shirt or merchandise from our Art/Craft vendors, and stop by the Children’s Activity area to see what’s being created. We hope you enjoy the day at the Pacific Rim Street Festival. The idea for the Pacific Rim Street Fest was introduced by legendary restaurateur Frank Fat to a small group of community leaders in 1991. At the round table in the private room at Fat City, Mr. Fat talked about his long-held dream to have an event that would showcase the Asian culture not only to the Asian community, but to the greater Sacramento community. After attending an Asian street festival in Oakland’s Chinatown, Mr. Fat was convinced that we could present a similar event here in Sacramento. The first event was planned for October, 1992. However, a scheduling conflict for the streets of Old Sacramento came up, resulting in the decision to move the event to May, Asian Heritage Month. In 1993, the first Pacific Rim Street Fest was presented. With his ever optimistic spirit, Frank Fat was able to succeed in seeing his dream of a street festival come to pass. This year marks the twenty-third year that the festival has been produced, each year displaying the richness and diversity of many Pacific Rim cultures through cultural programs, entertainment, art and food. Our location at Southside Park offers ample room, much-appreciated shade, and convenient parking, and we hope to continue to grow and evolve in this new home. The event has succeeded in enhancing the community's knowledge of Asian/Pacific Island cultures in a fun and positive environment, holding true to Frank Fat’s dream. 6 Pacific Rim Street Festival 2016 Our Sponsors Event Partner KCRA 3 / KQCA-MY 58 Gold Sponsors McDonald’s Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission Pepsi Wells Fargo Media Sponsor Crossings TV Silver Sponsors Frank Fat Foundation Kaiser Permanente SMUD Bronze Sponsors Apex Site Solutions City of Sacramento Confucius Institute 2016 Planning Committee The Pacific Rim Street Fest is a major program of the Asian Pacific Rim Foundation, which has been designated as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization by the Internal Revenue Service. The Sacramento region reflects the growing diverse Asian Pacific population of California. To honor and celebrate that cultural richness and ethnic diversity, Restaurateur Frank Fat and community leaders created the Pacific Rim Street Fest in 1993. The street fest is planned and staged by volunteers from more than 15 Asian Pacific community groups. Their goals are to broaden the awareness and understanding of the Asian Pacific heritage, to showcase the many positive contributions to the community at large, and to lend support to cultural endeavors in the form of grants and scholarships. The event is supported by major industries and community groups throughout Northern California, including the Sacramento Bee, Wells Fargo, KCRA/MY58, and the Sacramento Metropolitan Arts Commission. Be an important part of this exciting event! A warm thank you our Planning Committee Members for making the 2016 Pacific Rim Street Fest a success!
