Good Bugs
Probiotics are live microorganisms, which
when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. Humans have
always had a symbiotic relationship with these
“friendly” bacteria; the bacteria need us as their
host and in return, they help us keep our intestinal system in good health in a
variety of ways. In the crowded
microenvironment of our gastrointestinal tract, probiotic
bacteria can crowd out other
“undesirable”
bacteria

Keeping the Balance
While we have regularly consumed probiotics

The Cardiovascular System
Q-absorb
The cardiovascular system plays the crucial
role of circulating oxygen, as well as providing
a network for the movement of nutrients, cellular wastes and chemical signals throughout the
body. If cells in any part of the body are deprived
of fresh, oxygenated blood they begin to die.
The healthier the heart, lungs, arteries, veins and
blood are, the more efficient the body as a whole
will function.
Coenzyme Q10 (Co-Q10) has an important role
in cardiovascular metabolism, both as a critical
component in energy production, and as a circulating antioxidant. Made by all cells, it is essential
to the body’s production of energy in the form of
adenosine triphosphate (ATP) in the mitochondria. This holds special importance for the heart,
which is spectacularly endowed with mitochondria and generally has the body’s highest concentration of Co-Q10.
Factors that can impair the functioning of the cardiovascular system include both lifestyle (poor
diet, obesity, lack of exercise, elevated stress) as
well as biochemical (elevated levels of circulating
LDL cholesterol and glucose, high blood pressure, excessive free radical damage).
Supplements that improve the function of the

The Skeleton

well: it protects vital organs, stores calcium and

chemicals and nutrients for their continued health,
including calcium, vitamin D, trace minerals,

Jarrow Formulas® Bone-Up® is the most complete
nutritional regimen for healthy bones. It starts with
the finest source of calcium available: Hydroxyapatite (MCHA), the same form of calcium found

The Skin
The skin is the largest organ in the body, with
the average person having over 20 square feet
of dermal tissue. It is the body’s first line of defense against a variety of environmental agents
and bacterial organisms.
The skin is infused with a vast network of arteries, veins and nerves that endow it with many
sensory, motor and excretory functions. The skin
regulates body temperature, synthesizes vitamin
D when exposed to ultraviolet light and releases
many metabolic waste products.
Skin is rich in the structural proteins collagen and
elastin, which together lend skin its strength and
elasticity. Collagen is among the most abundant
proteins in the body, forming the structural framework for the body’s tissues and organs. In skin,
collagen degradation leads to loss of skin elasticity and the development of wrinkles. Skin is also
rich in hyaluronic acid, a glycosaminoglycan that
can absorb large amounts of water and is responsible for the skin’s hydration.

The bioavailable form of silicon is monomeric
(single unit) silicic acid [Si(OH)4], sometimes referred to as orthosilicic acid or monosilicic acid.
Silica [SiO2] is silicon dioxide and is not bioavailable. Silica is also the most common component
of sand. Silicon is found in food (and horsetail) as
silicates, which are likewise not bioavailable. All
dietary silicon must be converted in the stomach
into monomeric silicic acid for it to be absorbed

Herbs have been an integral part of early man’s
subsistence, and it is only relatively recently that
most humans have not consumed herbal material as a regular part of their diet. Many cultures
have a rich and detailed history and knowledge of
how to work with their particular set of indigenous
plants and herbs.
The Chinese, for example, have almost 5,000
years of recorded history about herbs, with the
first mention commonly related to the mythical Emperor Shen Nong. It is said that one day
he was meditating in the woods when a tealeaf
fell into the pot of water he had on the fire. In his
meditative state he drank the tea and recognized
its benefits.

The tea plant (Camellia sinensis L.) is a shrub
with dark green, narrow, serrated leaves primarily
grown in India, Sri Lanka, China, Indonesia and
Japan. Green tea accounts for approximately one
fifth of the world’s tea production.

water-soluble and tend to be easily absorbed
by the body. Another overlapping class of flavonoids are polyphenols, meaning they possess
more than one phenol group—a functionality that
can easily accept and donate electrons to help
neutralize free radicals and other reactive oxygen
species.*
One polyphenolic, catechin flavonoid found in
green tea, epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) is
believed to be the most active constituent of the
tea plant. Catechins, and especially polyphenolic
catechins linked to gallic acid, are considered to
be among the best of the antioxidants found in
the plant kingdom for regular ingestion. In many
experimental models, polyphenolic catechins
(EGCG, EGC and ECG) have been shown to provide more antioxidant protection than do the antioxidant vitamins C and E.*
Green, white, and black teas are derived from
the same plant. They only differ in when they are
picked and how they are processed after harvesting. For green tea, the fresh leaves are lightly
steamed or pan heated and then dried. This inactivates intrinsic oxidizing enzymes found in the
tea plant. When these enzymes are not deactivated, many of the tea polyphenols are degraded.
When fresh tea leaves are fermented or oxidized
