Wesenberg, Secretary St. Louis MG Club VOLUME 26, ISSUE 10 PAGE 4 C h a i r m a n ’ s M e s s ag e by Lee Fox Wow, Fall has arrived. As I write this, the leaves are just about at their peak and there is no better time to drive you MG! The past month saw the final Cars and Coffee for the year where the attendance just keeps on growing. If you haven’t made it to one of these Saturday morning events yet, be sure to make next spring. You’ll see everything from MGs to Teslas to a fire truck and more. The annual Halloween Rally and Party was organized by Tom and Ashley Bridges and lead over a dozen cars on a hunt for cemeteries in southern Illinois. Those who think there are no good LBC roads in Illinois are mistaken and even some of the “natives” discovered some new trails. The route lead to John and Carol Mangles’ house in St. Charles for food, fire and fun. The next day another dozen or so cars left from the venerable Red Roof Shell in Columbia to the Wurstmart Sunday in Renault, IL for a can’t be beat all you can eat deep fried pork sausage dinner. Upcoming are a Veterans Day Run on November 10, followed by the club’s monthly meeting on November 11 at P.J.’s in Kirkwood and the annual Sporting Clays shoot on November 23 in Old Monroe. If you haven’t tried sporting clays, it’s best described as golf with shotguns. Tons of fun and, dare I say it, a blast. The Christmas Lights tour and Christmakah Party details are still being worked out, so check the club web site for details soon. I want to thank everyone for their vote of confidence in choosing me as your chairman for the coming year. I will do my very best to carry on the fine work John Mangles has done in the past two years and, hopefully, add to it. I would like to see more driving events, tech sessions, social gatherings and, most of all, more members participating. Have a very happy Thanksgiving and remember, Safety Fast! Rally masters Tom and Ashley Bridges put together a fine rally with canopied covered roads, wide open spaces and plenty of harvested corn and soy bean fields. As expected, there were rally questions. Participants searched for cemeteries to identify them against the provided photos. I think cemeteries must be a family thing as Tom’s brother, Andrew, restored a grave site as part of his Boy Scout eagle award. The weather was bright and sunny with just a bit of coolness in the air. The combines were working the fields to gather their harvest and pouring the golden corn into truck beds – clearly the definition of autumn. Mature pumpkins dotted the fields adding an orange hit of color to the sparsely colored trees. There were many old, beautiful barns along the route and cows, pigs, horses and ducks. The route weaved here and there. We think of Illinois as flat, flat and flat. But the end of the drive brought us to the top of the ridge overlooking Columbia and directing us back to John and Carol Mangles for the annual Halloween party. This year we were treated to these interesting costumes: Sparky (Lee Fox wrapped in electrical wire which illuminated at night) The SU Carbs (Bob and Darla Bridges with snack food bags attached to the sweatshirts with one wearing an S and the other a U) A pumpkin pie (Rich Berger with a tiny pumpkin and Barb Berger with the Pi symbol) Devil Woman Carolyn Westbay and Angel Man Pete Westbay Carol and John Mangles as Sid and Willy from “Duck Dynasty.” Wonderful dishes complemented the grilled meats. The crowd arrived starving and attacked the appetizers. Many thanks to Tom and Ashley for creating a drive which caused many of us to think we should drive our cars more often. A big thank you goes to the Mangles for hosting a great party. It takes a lot of effort to create these memorable drives and parties, and we appreciate it. Photo by Bruce Hamper 2013 Photo by Andy Ackerman 2013 VOLUME 26, ISSUE 10 PAGE 6 Post-Halloween Rally Thoughts By Kathy Kresser and Thomas Bridges, Proofread by Anice Etz Tom and Ashley Bridges won the Halloween Rally in 2012, thus giving them the honor of being the rally masters for 2013. Tom shared his thoughts about the rally planning here. Ashley and I both enjoyed putting the drive together; we just wish we had started sooner...although I think this might be the case with most people that plan the Halloween rally. It is one of those drives that you tell yourself two distinct lies if you win and you're a novice like me. The first goes something like this: "It's a year out. I have plenty of time." The second goes, "It's not that hard." This explains the reason I procrastinated until about two months out to get serious. In the early stages of planning I knew that I wanted the drive to remain in Illinois. I also had a few roads in mind that I wanted to incorporate. Route selection ended up being easy since Ashley and I have participated in the Endurance Rally. We both know what types of roads and scenery we enjoy and as such, we kept that in mind while forming this drive. The biggest obstacle was determining the actual challenge. We wanted to keep it Halloween-based, unique, and to eliminate any possibility of a person using a smart phone for reference. Essentially, our goal was to ensure that the winner of the rally would win by bad luck. Moving forward, it was on one of our evening jaunts that we passed the Martini cemetery - a small German cemetery dating back to the early 1800s - and decided to get out and walk around. It was here that we agreed the challenge should be based on cemeteries. We had a few immediate ideas, but over time we kept coming back to the cemetery scavenger hunt. Once the challenge was formed, I went to Google Maps and typed in “cemetery” to have it highlight all the cemeteries along the roads we wanted to drive. From there it was a matter of tying the two items together and creating the rally that we handed out on that Saturday afternoon. Although I could include many more details about the planning and development of this drive, in the end we now know what we would do differently next time. In keeping with tradition, we pass the baton to the 2013 rally winners Ranney Dohogne and Bob Bentzinger – good luck, gentlemen. VOLUME 26, ISSUE 10 PAGE 7 Cars and Coffee 2013 Review By ML. Hillard Metro Cars & Coffee Review for 2013 It has simply been a great 4th year for the St.Louis Metro Cars & Coffee events. Held from April to October on Saturday mornings, the average attendance this past year was 168. It was 64 for 2011, and 92 last year. And this past year we simply had great weather each Saturday. Even with bad weather you have to love this sort of thing--otherwise we would just sit at home or be stuck in a mall somewhere. It’s been great to see so many different marques, with vintage and new cars all mingled together, and this year four Tesla’s out each month. Not many places have that going. It’s been just a fine time each month to get out of the house, get some coffee, and enjoy these cars without the traffic. And again some clubs have used the C&C mornings to kick off a special driving or tech day. Next year’s schedule will arrive soon, but it will start in April, 2014 again. Cars & Coffee would not happen without your “news” work getting the word out. And it is really just aimed at our mutual St. Louis sporting car clubs—thus your important role. Thank you. And thanks to all the marques and clubs who support Metro Cars & Coffee. It would not happen without all of us. See you next season. ML. Ar ticle from Richard Cunningham Cour tesy of The South Alabama British Car Club Ever wonder why a Top Fuel dragster gets a rebuilt engine after each run? *One Top Fuel dragster outfitted with a 500 cubic inch replica Dodge (actually Keith Black, etc.) Hemi engine makes more horse power (8,000HP) than the first 4 rows of cars at NASCAR's Daytona 500. *Under full throttle, a dragster engine will consume 11.2 gallons of nitro methane per second; a fully loaded Boeing 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate but with 25% less energy being produced. *A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to merely drive the dragster's supercharger. *With 3000 CF Mofair being rammed in by the supercharger on over drive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lockup at full throttle. *At the stoichio metric1.7:1air/fuel mixture for nitro methane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F. *Nitro methane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases. *Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each sparkplug. Which is typically the output of an electric arc welder in each cylinder. *Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After 1/2 way thru the run, the engine is 'dieseling' from compression and the glow of the exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow. *If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with enough sufficient force to blow the cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half!! *Dragsters reach over 300 MPH+...before you have completed reading this sentence. *In order to exceed 300 MPH in 4.5 seconds, a dragster must accelerate an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 MPH well before reaching half-track, at launch the acceleration approaches 8G's. *Top Fuel engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light! *Including the burnout, the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load. *The redline is actually quite high at 9500 RPM. Cont. on Page 9 PAGE 9 THE ST. LOUIS METRO GAZETTE Cont. from Page 8 *Dragsters reach over 300 MPH+...before you have completed reading this sentence. *In order to exceed 300 MPH in 4.5 seconds, a dragster must accelerate an average of over 4G's. Quicker than a jet fighter plane...quicker than the space shuttle....or snapping your fingers!! The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.420 seconds for the quarter mile (2004, Doug Kalitta). The top speed record is 337.58 MPH as measured over the last 66' of the run (2005, Tony Schumacher). Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged & ready to 'launch' down a quarter -mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the Vette hard, on up through the gears and blast across the starting line & past the dragster at an honest 200 MPH....The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that exact moment. The dragster departs & starts after you. You keep your foot buried hardtop the floor, and suddenly you hear an incredibly brutal screaming whine that sears and pummels your eardrums & within a mere 3 seconds the dragster effortlessly catches & passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter -mile a way from where you just passed him. Think about it–from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 MPH.....and it not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the planet when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race!!!! THAT, my friends.....is acceleration. PAGE 10 THE ST. LOUIS METRO GAZETTE THE MG Club of St. Louis Calendar Mon.
