Clapham playpark
nears completion
The installation of the new playpark equipment is
now almost complete, with only a few snagging
problems to sort out. We’re very pleased with how
quickly Playdale have been able to do the work,
which started before Christmas when the ground was
still covered in snow, and we hope residents see the
new playpark as a great improvement. There’s still
some tidying up to do, such as re-turfing parts that
have been churned up, and we’ll also be putting in
some raised beds in a couple of months. The wooden
hut will stay for the time being but we plan to replace
this as well at some point.
We were sad to hear about the death of Stella
Kenyon, who was going to construct the ‘living
willow theatre’ in the playpark in February. We still
hope to get this constructed though. The theatre will
be used by the school and for story-telling events.
We would like to thank Lucy McNamara, who
has resigned as Secretary. If anyone is interested in
taking on this role, or becoming involved in some
other way, please contact me.
The Association meets every couple of months,
usually in the New Inn, but the next meeting will be
in the playpark on Saturday, 12th March at 10am, to
plan the remaining work.

Clapham Tapestry
Next time you go into the village hall you will see
a new tapestry of our village. There are five of us
in the group which made it: Anne Gorner, Barbara
Marshall, Glenys McMahon, Mavis Leonard and Val
Braithwaite. We meet every other Monday.
After a visit to see the Quaker Tapestry in Kendal
the group were inspired to do something similar for
the village. It was decided to do a tapestry showing
some of the history of Clapham. Val researched into
the history and after the group had decided on the
layout she enlarged the design into a bigger scale.
The tapestry had to be worked in six individual
panels which could then be brought together to make
a complete picture showing the beck as the central
focus. The group has tried to illustrate some parts of
history that have had a significant influence on the
life of the village although, because of the limited
space, not all events are included.
In order to ensure that there was a consistency
across the six panels, the materials and yarn are the
same as used in the Quaker Tapestry and although
some of the group are experienced in embroidery it
was necessary to learn some of the techniques and
basic stitches of the Quaker Tapestry, which were
then loosely followed by the group to achieve their
own interpretation.
It has taken us two years to complete the tapestry.
We have done most of the work at home but we
met on Monday afternoons to compare notes, offer
each other advice and encouragement, drink tea, eat
cakes and put the world to rights in the course of
many conversations. We even found time for some
embroidery!!
The tapestry is now on show in the supper room at
the village hall and
the group are very
grateful to the Village
Hall Committee for
allowing the tapestry
to be displayed in the
village hall along
with the Millennium
collage. Thanks to
Ken Pearce for his
valuable help with
the history research
and to Ray Hull for
cutting the boards
for mounting the
panels. Also thanks
t o E d d i e ( Va l ’s
husband) for taking
up the challenge to
frame and fix the
panels to the village
hall walls.
Working on the
tapestry has been
a very rewarding
experience. We have
learned a lot about
the village history
and hope the finished
tapestry will add to
the enjoyment of
both the local people
and visitors to the
village hall.

A New Bishop for Bradford
The Bishop of Croydon, the Rt Revd Nick Baines,
was named as the next Bishop of Bradford shortly
before Christmas. He succeeds the Rt Revd David
James who retired in July.
Bishop Baines will be the tenth Bishop of Bradford
when he is installed in the spring or early summer.
Bishop Baines referred on the announcement of his
appointment to the Diocese Commission report,
which proposes replacing the Diocese of Bradford,
Ripon and Leeds and Wakefield with a single,
larger Diocese, by saying, “I have accepted this role
knowing that it might lead to me losing it, but that’s
OK because it’s not about me”.
Bishop Nick is aged 53 and studied German and
French at the University of Bradford and worked
for four years at GCHQ as a Russian linguist. He
trained for the ministry at Trinity College, Bristol,
and later served as a vicar in the Diocese of Leicester,
before becoming Bishop of Croydon in 2003. He has
appeared regularly on ‘Pause for Thought’ on Radio
2, and writes a blog entitled ‘Musings of a Restless
Bishop’. Bishop Baines and his wife, Linda, have
three children and one grandchild.
The former Bishop of Southwark, Dr Tom Butler,
described Bishop Baines as “one of the most able and
energetic Bishops in the Church of England”. Do
pray for Bishop Nick and his family as they prepare
to move to the Bradford Diocese – he will, I am sure,
be a regular visitor to the Ewecross Deanery.
May God bless you all.

Clapham & District Calendar
Welcome to Sam
Thank you to all the people who bought a Clapham
and District calendar. The response was overwhelming
and we hope to do another one next year.
A huge thanks also goes to our sponsors, all
businesses in the local area.
We are re-printing the sponsors’ page for you to
keep. In some of the first calendars to be printed there
were errors in the contact details for three of them.
Apologies to all concerned. Please use the contact
list to support these local businesses.

TRAMPS
The first outing of our new Blu-ray film projection
equipment will be at the next show in Clapham
Village Hall on Saturday, 12th February (see details
below). Blu-ray discs have a better picture resolution
than DVD discs and give a crystal-clear picture.
TRAMPS (the Ribblesdale Area Moving Picture
Show) is a voluntary group that shows films in village
halls. We aim to show a range of films to cater for
all tastes, knowing that we can’t please everyone
all the time. Since being set up around ten years
ago, TRAMPS has shown films in many villages
in the area, including Settle, Langcliffe, Austwick,
Bentham, Hellifield, and Thornton-in-Lonsdale.
Each village now has a small pool of volunteers who
independently arrange shows, hiring the equipment,
ordering a film, and promoting the show.
As our shows are classed as public performances,
they are subject to copyright laws and we have to hire
films from a recognised film distributor. A usual hire
fee is around £120. DVDs for public performances
by voluntary film groups such as TRAMPS tend
to be made available some months after a film has
appeared in cinemas or is in the shops, so it’ll be a
while before we can show The King’s Speech, for
instance. If you have any suggestions of films for
Sue and James, TRAMPS stalwarts
future shows please let me (or Sue Manson or Chris
Bell) know. If you want to see a list of films that are
available for us to hire a look at the film database on
www.filmbank.co.uk.
If you’re interested in getting involved with
projecting, helping to set up the equipment, helping
with refreshments etc. please let me know.

Primary schools Confederation
Our partnership of Austwick CE (VA), Clapham CE
(VC) and Horton-in-Ribblesdale CE (VA) is now
entering its second year, and it seems an appropriate
time to report and reflect upon the benefits and
achievements we have seen throughout 2010, while
also looking ahead to the future.
The confederation is a formal partnership, agreed
by the governing bodies of the three schools, to share
a headteacher and work together for the benefit of all
the children.
Many people within the communities give our
schools tremendous support. We really appreciate the
enthusiasm of the parents and families who help us in
many ways, including their work through the PTAs
and Friends organisations. The churches, including
members of the congregations, church leaders and
related organisations, the Parish Councils and other
groups within the villages prioritise the work of
their local schools and we are grateful for all the
support and encouragement that comes in our three
directions!
• We are working on developing the ethos of the
confederation and of each school. We aim to
promote Christian values and understanding
throughout all aspects of school life
• One of the highlights of last term was the
Ingleborough walk. All the children aged 7–10
from the three schools reached the summit before
lunch: this was an incredible achievement. For
many of the children it was first time they had
climbed a mountain, and to do so with new
friends from the other local villages made it very
special indeed. A photographer from the Times
Educational Supplement went along with us, and
the children appeared in the centre spread of that
national newspaper. Yorkshire Dales National Park
and English Nature supported our venture.
• I lead a Confederation Orchestra, which is fully
inclusive and non-selective. This gives children
in our small schools the opportunity to meet
their friends and to play together in a musical,
context and it is a lovely way to share our talents.
The orchestra includes flute, saxophone, guitar,
recorder, piano accordion, drums, percussion,
piano and violin and meets for a half term in each
school in turn. The children are choosing the music
they would like me to arrange for them, and this
ranges from Schubert to Status Quo!
• Representatives of each governing body meet to
share confederation matters. In addition, I meet
the Assistant Headteachers every month to discuss
issues that concern us all and which relate to
development of collaborative activities
• The staff of the three schools share training and
work together as appropriate
• A football club for the confederation was set up,
Three of the children who enjoyed their lunch on the summit of Ingleborough
10
very kindly run by former teacher John Anderton.
The children loved it: they had the chance to play
with a larger group of enthusiastic footballers
than is normally experienced in a small school
session.
• Clapham School has Food For Life Flagship
Status, and because of this the Cooking Bus will be
spending three days there at the beginning of next
term. All our children will be going to workshops
in the visiting Cooking Bus
• John Anderton followed up his football club with
a gymnastics club taking place indoors during the
dark winter evenings. Children of all ages attend
the club, learning and refining their gymnastic
skills with growing confidence.
• A maths teacher from an Asian heritage family
in Skipton family will be working in the schools,
partly to give the children the opportunity to meet
a positive role model from a different traditional
culture, experiencing something of the joy of living
in a respectful multi-cultural society despite living
in an area where such chances are few.
• Shared sports activities have benefited the
children from our small schools, and there have
been opportunities to enter tournaments with a
combined team. The work of the football club
was particularly useful, leading to children from
different schools forming a team with friends they
had got to know through sport
• Further development of a shared learning platform
in order to encourage collaboration between the
pupils of each school through e-communication
Of course, educational standards, care and safeguarding of the children and day to day priorities
within each school are at the heart of what we all
prioritise.
• In March our Year Four children will be coming
together to share two days in a Dales barn with
West Yorkshire children, sharing experiences and
having fun in Christian fellowship. This will also
bring an opportunity to share a residential visit with
Eastwood School, Keighley, which has strong links
with Horton School
High standards were achieved throughout 2010 in
all the schools, and out teaching staff work very hard
to maintain and to build upon these standards. We
have excellent teaching and non-teaching staff, whose
dedication to caring for the children and maintaining
standards is remarkable.
• Key Stage 2 children from all three schools will be
visiting the Water Treatment Plant near Clapham.
I have been to see work at the site and was given
a tour of the facilities that will be explored by the
children: I’m sure that the visit will be exciting
and stimulating. Yorkshire Water are very keen to
involve us in their work and have set up activity
packs for schools. This also gives us an opportunity
to plan curriculum activities as a confederation.

Help needed
I wonder whether there are any local computer

Early Years Group
Your views wanted
Clapham Early Years Group would like to thank
everyone who helped make the Sponsored Walk such
a huge success. So far we have raised £474 and there
is still more to come! We really do appreciate all the
support given by parents, staff, friends and everyone
in the local community. We would also like to thank
Clapham Community Bio Diesel Project for their
very generous donation of £200. Clapham EYG also
raised £150 at the School Christmas Fair this year.

Craven District Council wants your views about
the impact that cuts announced in the governments
recent Comprehensive Spending Review may have
on Council services
Residents are invited to a meeting on the 28th
February 2011 at Bentham Town Hall (6pm) to
discuss the outcome of the district council’s budget
setting processes for 2011–12.
The meeting will include a brief presentation
from a member of the Craven District Council senior
management team followed by a question and answer
session to give you an opportunity to comment about
the budget cuts. This is your chance to raise your
concerns and put forward your ideas about how the
budget cuts may affect you.
The Government is going to reduce local
government grants by 7.1% for each of the next four
years. This will require
the District Council to
find further savings of
£1.3 million to balance its
budget over the next two
years. This must inevitably
affect the way in which
the Council manages its
services in the future.
We hope to see you at the
meeting. In the meantime
if you have any saving
suggestions or additional
comments, please email

Fluffy the fell-walking Cat
Our kitten arrived on a wet summers day (having been
found following some walkers on the Old Road from
Newby to Clapham) looking more like a drowned
rat than a kitten. After a large helping of food she
enjoyed a long comfortable sleep.
She has already used four of her nine lives, the
first was being left to fend for herself, the second
when she was run over by a bicycle, thirdly, whilst
running at speed she fell into the fish pond. Her fourth life was lost on a freezing cold day just
after Christmas when she decided to go for a wander
in the snow. She was seen by various walkers between
Clapham and Gaping Gill testing her endurance to
the limit. After being missing for three nights she
was seen by some students and decided to follow
them to the top of Ingleborough. Tilly, one of the
students picked her up, exhausted and frozen and
photographed her on the summit where she hungrily
ate a sausage. She was then put in her rucksack where
she fell asleep.
When the students completed their walk down to
Horton-in-Ribblesdale where their second car was
parked, they returned to Clapham and made enquiries
that brought her safely back home. After a hearty
meal she fell asleep in front of a warm fire. We now
await ‘life number five’ – watch this space.

Village people . . . The School
In the course of my interviews for these articles I
have been fascinated to discover how people met their
partners, and to see how often they met by chance.
When you look back at the title for this piece you
may think that Margaret and Dennis Bullock must
have swapped sprouts with each other or held hands
under the table as they bravely tackled a portion of
cold coagulated sago pudding. (School dinners were
a formidable challenge sixty years ago). However,
the truth is rather different, as you will see if you
read on.
Margaret was born in Bentham in1935 but she
spent her early years in Newby with her parents
and sister, Eileen Plumridge and she attended the
village school there until they moved to Brookside
in Clapham in 1942. Her father was the village
blacksmith and her mother was a housewife who had
worked in the laundry at Ingleton before she married.
She enjoyed her childhood playing in the beck and
she remembers being allowed to play on The Green
during the lunch break. Today the headteacher would
go to jail or be shot for not carrying out a written risk
assessment and erecting wire fences but Margaret
reassures me that not many pupils drowned. She
passed the County Minor Scholarship and attended
Settle Girls’ High School where she enjoyed maths
and English but the fact that much of her homework
was done on the bus suggests that school was not
the most exciting experience so she chose to leave
at sixteen and worked in Settle Town Hall as a fuel
officer. You may well wonder what this job entailed
but you need to know that fuel was rationed so
some officials had to run the system and check that
everyone received the correct number of coupons.
She left there to work in Settle Education Office
where one of her duties was to take all the dinner

money to The Midland Bank, now the HSBC, where
a handsome young clerk called Dennis checked her
maths.
Dennis was born in Upper Settle in 1934 and lived
there throughout his childhood which he remembers
as being very happy. His dad worked in the quarry
and then transferred to the railway where he became
an inspector. Mum, originally from County Durham,
was a domestic assistant at Giggleswick School
before she married. Dennis had one brother who
died some years ago and one sister who lives in
Bentham. He attended Settle Primary School and
passed the County Minor to attend Giggleswick
which he left when he was sixteen in order to take
a job at the Midland Bank. Some time later he went
on a coach from this area to a dance in Morecambe
and Margaret was, by chance, on the same coach.
In those days many young people were particularly
shy about chatting to the opposite sex as a result of
attending single sex schools but Dennis was bold
enough to ask Margaret to dance because he knew
her from their numerous conversations about dinner
money.
When he did his national service in the RAF he
longed to go abroad. He was posted to the far east
but his destination was Binbrook in Lincolnshire,
not Tokyo. He returned to his banking career but
he sought to escape because he could have been
transferred at very short notice and by this time he
was going out with Margaret. He became assistant
to the office manager at Telamite, a subsidiary of
George Angus in Bentham. He and Margaret wanted
to marry but there was a major problem: Margaret
was C of E and Dennis was a Catholic. They were
married in Clapham Church but only after Dennis had
been excommunicated. He is the only person I know
who has been excommunicated twice. When he was
a boy his father took the family to a musical concert
in the Zion chapel and so the priest ejected them all
from the catholic church. In the RAF the padre told
him to ignore what the family priest had said and re
-admitted him to the faith. Marriage in a C of E church
was the final straw and led to his second expulsion.
When their first child, Stephen, was born, Dennis
went to the registry office and gave the date of birth,
5th September, 1960. The registrar then asked him
for the date of their marriage and raised disapproving
eyebrows when Dennis said that too was September
5th. He had forgotten to say that it was 5th September,
1958. When people commented that Stephen looked
remarkably like Dennis, Margaret’s Mum said,

The Great
Poppy Party
Weekend
Dinner Affair
10th, 11th and 12th June 2011
We’d love to see everyone join the nationwide
celebrations of the 90th anniversary of The Royal
British Legion by hosting a Poppy Party on the
weekend of 10-12 June, 2011 with family and friends,
with neighbours or work colleagues.
It doesn’t matter whether it’s a barbecue, fancy
dress event, karaoke night, masked ball, barn dance,
games evening, a dress down day at school, or any
one of so many other wonderful and inventive ways
of partying.
Just join us and the many
local authorities throughout the
UK in making it a memorable
occasion for all those taking
part. At the same time the parties
can raise valuable funds to
further the welfare work of the
Legion for the future, 90 years and more of helping
millions of beneficiaries – men and women who serve
and have served their country at home and abroad,
many at enormous personal cost to themselves and
their families.
If you would like to organise an event please visit
www.thegreatpoppypartyweekend.org.uk to download a brochure, register your party or download
sponsor forms, or you can contact John Dawson on
015242 51350 for further information.
Dennis and Margaret made a first class start to their
honeymoon. Unfortunately they had to return to third
class once they had removed the confetti from their
clothes.
“Never mind, he’s time to change!” Stephen was
followed by Ian in 1962 and Gillian in 1964 and all
three have forged successful careers.
One day in 1961 there was a knock on the door
of Yew Tree Cottage where they lived. It was Harry
Scott, founder of The Dalesman, which was published
in Clapham in those days. Out of the blue, he offered
Dennis the post of accountant; Dennis accepted
his invitation and stayed there for thirty years. He
passed the examinations of The Institute of Chartered
Secretaries and Administrators which made him a
qualified company secretary. He thoroughly enjoyed
his time there, working with people like Bill Mitchell
and Margaret also worked part-time when she was
not doing her other job as secretary at the primary
school. When Harry and Dorothy Scott retired in
1968 Dennis was one of three partners involved
in a management buy-out and they in turn sold the
company in 1989. Dennis continued working for the
company until he retired in 1991.
Now they enjoy their retirement but Dennis has
been handicapped by arthritis in his feet which has
curtailed his walking. They are always cheerful
company and Dennis has a lovely sense of humour
which has survived excommunications and his
problems with mobility. It is a fascinating thought
that if Margaret had been allocated responsibility for
bus passes and not school dinner money they might
not have known each other.

Wildlife at Clapham
Little Egrets have finally arrived
in Clapham. One Little Egret
was seen at Crook Beck over
the weekend of the 11th &
12th December. It was seen by
several people and it was also
reported in the Yorkshire Post
weekly bird report. The Little
Egret then disappeared for about
five weeks and it was seen again
at Crook Beck between Nutta
Farm and the Bentham road
on the 14th January. The bird
looks like a small white Heron
with a black bill, black legs
and yellow feet. About twenty
years ago the Little Egret was a
major rarity in this country and
Twitchers would travel all over
the country to see one. They
colonized the south coast nearly
twenty years ago and have spread north since then.
Leighton Moss now gets at least a hundred Little
Egrets coming in to roost on most nights.
Another interesting bird was seen on New Year’s
Day. One Black Tailed Godwit flew north low over
Newby Moor. This species spends the winter in large
flocks around the coast and at some inland lakes
and nature reserves, with the mild weather we had
between Christmas and New Year this Black Tailed
Godwit must have been flying around looking for
other flocks of Black Tailed Godwits to join.
At least four Bramblings are wintering with the
Chaffinch flocks around the local area. Two have
been seen at Wenning Hipping and two were seen at
Park View in Clapham and at Ingleborough Hall.
Five Siskins are roosting overnight in the woods
The Little Egret
at Ingleborough Hall and during the day they are
feeding at garden feeders around Clapham.
One Barn Owl has managed to survive the cold
weather. One was seen hunting over Newby Moor
on the weekend of the 15th and 16th of January and
it was seen again hunting over the moor on the 21st
January. Large numbers of Barn Owls have been
found dead during this winter around the country
due to starvation. If the weather is extremely cold or
there is a thick layer of snow on the ground as was
the case during December the Barn Owls are unable
to find food and starve to death, so seeing this barn
owl during Jan was a good sighting.
