Sunday, May 3rd was the first annual Waterfest at Jaycee Park. Many volunteers from the FPYC and TCYSF, including parents, turned out to represent our organizations at this inaugural event. We gave sailboats rides to 296 members of the public. Some went more than once. The day was ideal for sailing at Jaycee Park: Trying out a kayak or stand up paddle board courtesy of our friends at Lisa's Kayaks, or just relaxing and listening to live music from the Fort Pierce Jazz and Blues Society. Our co-sponsors were the City of Fort Pierce, Treasure Coast Youth Sailing, Lisa's Kayaks & the Fort Pierce Jazz & Blues Society. All are looking forward to Waterfest at Jaycee Park 2016. The guest speaker at our May Members meeting was Tom Butler, Vice Commander of the Division for Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 58. Mr. Butler provided great information including the 'Weekend Navigator' two day seminar presenting the basics of Navigation For Boating Enthusiasts.. May 16th was the last Coffee With The Mayor for the early part of the year. Following a three month summer break, they will again be at the our Club on the third Friday of each month at 8:00 a.m. The next session will be in September. Diane and I spent a few days doing things nowhere near sea level this month. We enjoyed the beautiful scenery of Arizona and were based in Sedona. We drove to the Grand Canyon, attended a destination wedding, took a 'Pink Jeep Tour' and hiked a few times, most notably a trek to the top of Cathedral Rock with about 25 others in our party. It was 6/10s of a mile with a 600 foot (60 stories) change in elevation. It was part hike and part rock climbing. What an experience and great trip! By the time this issue is published, we will have enjoyed another of our traditional Memorial Day Commemorations. I also hope this will have been a safe and enjoyable Holiday for us all. Stay tuned in June for interesting developments for the near term as they unfold. .. See you at the Club! Ken We are anticipating three to five new members next month. It is fun to see all the newest members getting to know ome of our “veterans” at the Friday Night Socials. Please keep telling your friends about our Club. Please remember to check the sign-up sheet for providing refreshments for the monthly Membership Meeting. Store-bought or homemade—it doesn’t matter. And you will be reimbursed for any expenses.. See you at the Club! Pat Bercier, Membership Director Tom Butler, Vice Commander of the Division for Coast Guard Auxiliary, Flotilla 58, giving his informative presentation at our May Members’ Meeting. Questions followed the discussion on boat safety and the upcoming seminar on the “Weekend Navigator”. Special Treat: A mammoth slide show of great pics from recent FPYC events to be shown throughout the meeting! A Day at the Beach! Sailing, Kayaking, Paddleboarding, Food! Fun for Everyone! The “Cruise to Lunch” held on Saturday, May 16th, at the Hutchinson Marriott turned into a "Drive In" due to the powerboat racing in Stuart & the uncertainty of the channel availability going into the resort. The FPYC turned out 30 members to enjoy the Marriott's usually excellent selections. It appears everyone had a wonderful experience. Thank you Marriott staff! We were sorry to see our numbers were down from last year as some members could not attend. They were missed. We are hopeful they will be able to attend the next function. Other news: First, the FPYC instituted agreements with both Youth Sailing of Indian River County and Treasure Coast Youth Sailing to enhance their adult sailing programs. We will be seeing some of their students (and potential members) sailing with us during our racing programs. The FPYC will hold its annual 4th of July festivities with a boat parade in local waters and a BBQ af- terwards at the club. As in previous years, FPYC will invite boaters from the surrounding area to join us for the parade. Those who participate and register with us beforehand, will be our guests for the BBQ as well. Ingrid Van Hekken will be hosting this event. We also will be putting Web links to the FPCM on our website, and they will be doing the same. The city has put in 4 new webcams and are accessible on their web site. A new advertising poster to encourage outside race participation has been finalized and will be at the club shortly for your viewing. Stay tuned for new areas of cooperation with the City Marina during June. Thanks to Bill & Lillie Taylor for the luncheon coordination & for the Poster work. More on the new cooperation with the City Marina from Ken. Mike Wohlstein, Fleet Director Racing News The second race of the Spring Series was held Sunday, May 24TH, in near perfect wind & sea conditions on one of our near offshore courses. It truly is good to be back on the water now that the inlet is fully open & restored to pre-tragedy condition. The finishing sequence was particularly close with ‘Varmint” (O’Toole) edging out “Ephyra” (Fitz) by only 24 seconds on PHRF corrected time. Right on their sterns was “Follow You Follow Me” (Boardman) in third place, followed by “Tulius” (Woodrow) fourth, and “Inner Voice” (Hicks) fifth. As part of our outreach program to introduce new participants to sailboat racing as mentioned last month, and elaborated upon by Fleet Chairman Mike Wohlstein, we invited Treasure Coast Youth Sailing participant, Cameron Kuchar, aboard “Varmint” as a fully participating crew member, and the Woodrows included newcomers to the area & to sailing, Dan Deckert & friend, Erika, aboard “Tulius” as an introduction to racing for them. Suffice to say there were a lot of smiles seen around the Club at the post-race social. I was particularly pleased as Cameron made significant contributions to our effort as we eked out the narrow win over “Ephyra” and fended off “Follow You Follow Me” in an upwind tacking duel. Great fun! We will expand this outreach effort in upcoming events. The next race is scheduled for 28 June. See you on the water! Mike O’Toole, Race Captain Our Memorial Day Commemoration was held on May 25, on a warm and breezy day. The traditional program was presented, led by Commodore Ken Milner. (See photos on next page.) The presentation of the colors, at the top of the program, was courtesy of the Fort Pierce Central High School ROTC, and to close, we were treated to music. The singalong, led by Donna Mitchell, featured 'When Johnny Comes Marching Home', 'This Land is Your Land' and 'God Bless America' with flags waving. Helping Donna with this segment were Dr. Allen Rosenberg on keyboards and Diane Milner on the drums. Dick Myers added to the program with playing 'America The Beautiful' on his trumpet, and last but not least, Diane's Dad, Joe Gagliardi played his saxophone to close the music with 'In Good Old Summertime', 'When Irish Eyes are Smiling', and 'Who's Sorry Now?' Dick Myers also played Taps for us, first at the 3:00 p.m. National Moment of Silence, & at the Casting of the Wreath which was prepared by Candace Banack. The wreath was presented this year to Nancy Spalding, wife of Past Commodore Dick Spalding. Many thanks to those who helped make the day such a nice success, Ingrid Van Hekken - Co- Sponsor, purchased food, worked the kitchen and serving as well as decorating. Diane Milner - Decorating and drums Joe Gagliardi - Saxophone Ursula Rosenberg - Committee Member, decorating Dr. Allen Rosenberg - Keyboards Donna Mitchell - Music Program Director Dick Myers - Trumpet Roger and Linda Hutchinson - Bartenders Drue Kale and Patricia Flint - Kitchen helpers Howard and Janet Woodrow - Kitchen and bartending as well as managing bar Candace Banack - Preparation and presentation and casting of the wreath Mike and Mary Wohlstein - Working the front door and checking in guests Dale Cawthorne - For reading the names of Past Commodores Marlene Wood - For reading the name of our most recently passed member, Curtis Aiken Milt Vanderhelst - For tolling of the bell. And Thank You to all who attended (there were about 79) this special day at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club! Ken & Diane Milner, Hosts I am pleased to announce that The Fort Pierce Yacht Club and Treasure Coast Youth Sailing have been invited by the City of Fort Pierce and Fort Pierce City Marina to be exhibitors at the Grand Opening of the Fort Pierce City Marina on National Marina Day! The new $30,000,000 public boating facility and waterfront protection project will be unveiled with a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at 9:00 AM and the festivities will continue throughout the day until 4:00 PM with family- friendly events. We will need a few volunteers to be FPYC Ambassadors for this event and staff a hospitality table and tent. We hope to see you there at this great celebration on the beautiful Fort Pierce Waterfront! Thanks to all for making this a great year for our Club and the Community. Ken The Treasure Coast Youth Sailing Foundation had a wonderful regatta on May 17th. After a very slight threat of rain in the morning, the weather at Jaycee Park in Fort Pierce was beautiful. The wind was a steady East 10-15 kts. Eighteen sailors raced in 420’s, Optimist Gold and Optimist Silver classes. To show how spirited the competition was, there was only one point separating first & second place in the Optimist Gold class; two points separation first & second in the Optimist Silver class; and three points separated first from second in the 420 fleet. That was after eight races. Thanks to Howard & Jan Woodrow for serving as race committee boat again this year, and Drue Kale handled registrations. Mal Schwalje brought his boat and Bob Scully drove one of the TCYSF boats to use as safety/chase boats and to set and retrieve racing marks. After the racing, Barb Dell’Acqua and her crew of Candace Banack & Jan Tomasovic did a marvelous job of feeding the hungry sailors. Thanks again for the wonderful support provided by the Fort Pierce Yacht Club! Lou Tomasovic Spectacular Boat Parade, Barbeque and of course the City of Fort Pierce Fireworks over the Indian River!
