Originally
Spaniards
calledthecity
"Ciguatan"
andlateradded

"ejo"
endingof

place." Consequently,

Spanishbooks,mapsand
documents,the city is markedas
Cigua,Ciguatanor Ciguatanejo.
About200 yearslater,the name
underwentitsfinalchangeto
Zihuatanejo,as it is knowntoday.
Around1575,manypirateslandedin
Zihuatanejo
to usethe bayas refuge
from badweatheror to tradefor
supplieswiththe townpeople.The
mostcommonand profitablereason
for theirvisitswas to use the bay as
a hidingplacefor attackswaged
againstthe SpanishArmandaand
merchantgalleonfleeton theirway
