From the Executive Director
Fall is in the air! I hope you’re enjoying cooler temperatures.
Fiscal year 2015 is well underway. Projections indicate we’ll end the FY2014 within
the budget approved by the Board of Trustees. To continue recognizing the efforts of
our amazing staff, the FY 2015 budget includes a cost of living salary increase for eligible employees and continuation of the performance based salary increase program.
Keep those SAFETY SAM awards coming! We want a safe environment for all who
provide and receive services. Please pay special attention when driving as there were
11 vehicle accidents last year and definitely want to report ZERO vehicle accidents
this year.
As you know, the Texas Legislature will enter into session in January 2015, and we
will sponsor a forum in December to educate locally elected officials on the services
we provide to the community and the needs of our consumers for continued funding
and support. We are thankful to our local elected officials who have been steadfast in
support of our Center and to the services provided to people with mental illness and
intellectual and developmental disabilities.
We must demonstrate compliance with targets and outcome measures set by our funding sources and contracts to provide services. Each employee and contractor contributes, positively or negatively to the Center’s performance.
The Center will provide a turkey to each employee to enjoy during the holidays. Stay

Thank you for “Working Together for Better Lives!”
The Social and New Media Project plans to launch a Twitter and possibly an Instagram
account in addition to BHC’s current presence on Facebook. The intention for incorporating
social media is to aid in reducing the stigma surrounding mental health, and to create a positive online mental health community. It is our hope that through a combination of social media, the JOIN website, and outreach that we can further bridge the gap between the community and available services.
The Project will promote the JOIN campaign through community outreach and education. By collaborating with C.C.I.S.D, we hope to meet with high school health classes to present information on healthy mental and physical wellbeing. The purpose of our outreach campaign is to encourage youth to be proactive in maintaining their own mental health, and to
inform the community of resources for those at risk.
1115 Waiver Programs
The website will provide psycho-educational material as part of a campaign to promote a
healthy connection between mental and physical wellness. The content will be written in language that parents, teens, and kids can understand—so no confusing clinical jargon! The vision for the website is to become a “hub” for adolescent community members to find information regarding mental health, coping skills, resources, and events.
Larry Davis, IDD Dual Diagnosis clinic, was awarded a scholarship to attend the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed Convention in San Antonio. The scholarship was
open to direct service professionals around the country.
Larry was chosen based upon his work with individuals with
mental health and IDD diagnoses. We are very proud of Larry and happy to have him on our team!

Breast Cancer Awareness Activities
Youth Services Corner
Youth Services offered free back to school haircuts. Local stylists, Stephen Teran, Robert Morales, and Kasey Quintero, graciously volunteered time and skills to provide this service. About 50 kids
participated in the event.
Staff recognized for timeliness of data entry, with 98-100% of tdata

Our presentation brought awareness to National Disability Employment Awareness
Month, held each October, sponsored by the US Depar tment of Labor ’s Office
of Disability Employment Policy. It is a national campaign to raise awareness about
disability employment issues and celebrate the many and varied contributions of
America's workers with disabilities. The 2014 theme: "Expect. Employ. Empower."

Speaker’s Bureau comprised of employees
who are available to speak in Nueces County
or surrounding counties.
These varied groups of individuals tailor their presentation to your group’s interest
and needs, and provides information about
current issues relating to mental health and
intellectual disability disorder needs and services available through Nueces County.
