Svandalsfossen.
The future Ryfylke National Tourist Route is one of 18 tourist routes
established throughout Norway. This scenic route, which runs from Oanes by
the Lysefjord to Hårå in Røldal, shall be fully upgraded to a National Tourist
Route before the summer season in 2012.
The future Ryfylke National Tourist Route offers travellers a beautiful and lush
landscape, with fjords, green isles and skerries, colourful heathlands and
tranquil cultural landscapes, screes and boulder fields, towering mountains
and sheer cliffs.
Already in the 19th century the wild and pristine landscape of Ryfylke
attracted its first tourists; today it continues to tempt travellers to great
outdoor adventures. The highlights and attractions are many. You can fish
in the rivers and streams and sheltered fjords, savour fruit orchards in full
flower, go on mountain walks or enjoy more extreme sports. Here are many
charming villages and small friendly towns that merit a visit. You can also
explore the area’s fascinating industrial history, for instance visiting the mines
at Allmannajuvet, where zinc was extracted in the 19th century.
Along Svandalsfossen you can follow the waterfall up close while climbing
the striking stairs. The ferry landing at Ropeid has a waiting room of bold
design, and at Allmannajuvet gorge a high quality visitors’ centre is being
established. A detour from Preikestolen Mountain Lodge is a must! A wellmarked path leads up onto the famed Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) plateau,
600 metres above the Lysefjord, where you are rewarded with a stunning view.

Bicycling
If you want to explore the sights, sounds and fragrances of Ryfylke, you
have a number of tempting options. Cycling brings your holiday experience
closer. Please note: we do not recommend the Ryfylke Road since it is
popular for those travelling by car, has tunnels and narrow sections.
Take one of the tempting detours instead - around Randøy in Hjelmeland,
to Jelsa in Suldal, visit Ombo (Finnøy/Hjelmeland), explore the mountains
between Årdal and Songesand (Hjelmeland/Forsand), head toward Fiskå
north of Strand, and around Kvalvåg (Strand/Forsand).
If you’re in top shape, choose trunk road Rv 520 from Sauda, across the
Røldal mountains to Røldal stave church. On the way there is plenty of
fresh air and some curious goats.
The perfect terrain for cycling is offered on the islands of Ryfylke. Here you
meet a lush cultural landscape with grazing land, woods and sheltered
coves. Bicycles and express boats are a perfect combination, so you can
explore the islands of your choice.
At the Tourist Information office, you can request a map that shows bicycle
paths in Rogaland county (English, German and Norwegian).
Bicycle hire: Sand in Suldal, please contact Suldal Tourist Office.
Sauda: contact Sauda Tourist Office, which also offers guided bicycle tours.

Mountain walks
Ryfylke offers many marked walking paths, some leisurely and others
challenging. We ask that you respect our unspoiled wilderness and select
your challenges according to your physical fitness. Choose clothing to
accommodate weather changes, even rain, and wear boots or solid shoes.
Bring plenty to drink and a rewarding bite to chew on when you reach
your goal. Please note that the paths to some well-known attractions may
be unsuitable for children and those who are not in good shape. We ask
you to follow signs and instructions and not take any chances. There are a
number of excellent books and maps that describe wilderness adventures
and mountain walks. Ryfylkeheiane is a treasured area where there is a
good network of marked paths. (See the fold-out map).
Large tracts of these heathlands have been designated nature reserves,
in order to protect the southernmost population of wild reindeer and
Europe, as well as to preserve magnificent wilderness and exciting cultural
monuments.
If you are looking for peace and quiet away from the most popular paths,
please contact Tourist Information, Ryfylke Museum or Stavanger Turistforening at P.O. Box 239, NO-4001 Stavanger, tel. 51 84 02 00,
fax 51 84 02 14. E-mail: [email protected].
Guide for sale from the Preikestolen area. For mountain walks in Sauda,
please contact Sauda Ferie og Fritid tel. 51 78 42 00, or Haugesund
Turistforening (Haugesund Mountain Touring Association). Tel. 52 71 53 11,
[email protected]. Local maps of walking paths are available
at each Tourist Information.
Guided walks and hikes are possible in several of the Ryfylke municipalities. Suldal: the old Pilgrims’ Trail between Suldal and Røldal, contact
Suldal Tourist Office. Sauda: guided hikes on request outside the high
season, contact Sauda Ferie og Fritid. Forsand: guided hikes to Kjerag in
the season, contact Lysefjorden Utvikling. Strand: guided walks during the
summer months, contact Strand Tourist Information. Ask for a detailed
programme from the various tourist offices. Near the towns, villages and
Ryfylke Road there are many paths that are ideal for shorter walks (1-3
hours), and these may be just as rewarding as your visit to the best known
sights. Please see more detailed information listed under each municipality,
and ask at Tourist Information Offices.
Welcome to Setesdal Vesthei - Ryfylkeheiane
A wilderness full of surprises
Large tracts of these mountains have been designated nature reserves, in order to

Explore boating in Ryfylke
With its fjords and islands, Ryfylke is a paradise for your boating
holiday! You will find excellent guest harbours, undisturbed coves,
sheltered bays and natural harbours. There are plenty of tranquil
waters and secluded spots where you can enjoy peace and quiet, as
well as charming villages to explore.
In Sauda you can hire boats at Sauda Fjordhotel, while Sauda Ferie og
Fritid rents out canoes. In Suldal and in Forsand it is possible to rent
kayaks for a trip around the fjords. In Strand and several places in
Hjelmeland there are boats for hire. It’s not hard to be tempted by a
peaceful day or week on the fjord, with the midsummer sun shining
late into the evening, with fish on your line and sound of waves calmly
lapping against your hull.
There are excellent guest harbours and boat facilities everywhere
throughout Ryfylke. You can tie up at a floating dock or moor at the
quay right by the local general store. Throughout our region there is
a great network of well-marked trails, as well as country roads with
little traffic that are perfect for walking or bicycling. Bring your own or
rent a bike. Many attractions are a short walk from the harbour. After
an active day you may be tempted to enjoy a home-cooked meal on
the quay at Randøy, Fister, Hålandsosen or Sand. Travelling by boat
also brings you right into the midst of Ryfylke’s many and lively summer festivals, where a good time is guaranteed for the entire family.

Fishing in Ryfylke
Fishing is excellent throughout Ryfylke and the locals gladly offer
advice on good spots. In addition to fjord fishing you will find salmon
rivers and mountain lakes teeming with trout. Before fishing for
salmon and trout in rivers or lakes you must pay the fishing fee at a
local Post Office. (Children under 16 excepted.) In addition, local
fishing cards are required for all freshwater fishing. Sea and fjord
fishing, however, is free of charge! Live bait is prohibited. No fishing
within 100 m of fish farming facilities, and you are required to keep
at least 20 m distance at all times, so as not to disturb the fish. At the
Hjelmeland Library, you can hire fishing tackle free of charge for one day.
Trout and salmon fishing in these rivers is permitted during these periods

The fjord fishing in Ryfylke is good, particularly in the central part
around the many islands, and in the northerly reaches. In the spectacular Jøsenfjorden and Lysefjorden, the fishing can be combined with
hiking in the high mountains around; guided trips with fishing boat
and an experienced fisherman are available in Suldal and Hjelmeland.
There are maps of the best fishing-spots in Hjelmeland. Sheltered and
safe waters make it easy to be your own skipper in Ryfylke. Here you
can fish in ice-free fjords all year round. The most common species
in the fjords are cod, mackerel, pollack, saithe, monkfish, wolf fish,
halibut and ling.
You too will have fishing luck!

W I N T E R IN RYFYLKE
Winter is white in Ryfylke as well, and snow conditions are most stable
in our northern tracts. Sauda Skisenter, Svandalen welcomes winter
visitors with its alpine facilities - a snow cannon ensures a long season.
At www.ryfylke.com you can find the full listing of winter events and
check snow conditions in Svandalen. Prepared ski tracks are available
a number of places in Sauda, and at Gullingen in Suldal municipality
where there are smaller alpine facilities. But also there are other places
in Ryfylke, where conditions are often ideal for cross-country skiing.
Check on the map and ask Tourist Information for snow conditions
and advice. Lighted and prepared ski tracks may tempt you to ski in
the evening. And you may find ponds and small lakes where you can
go ice skating with the locals.
Expressboat from Stavanger to Sauda, and our “Snow Bus” from
Sauda on highway Rv13 to Røldal will bring you to the mountains,
every weekend during the season. Look at www.ryfylke.com and the
map on the right.
Ryfylkeheiane and Sauda have some paths that are marked with twigs
part of the winter. For further information please contact Stavanger
Turistforening tel. 51 84 02 00, [email protected]
and Sauda Tourist Information tel. 52 78 42 00, [email protected].
Down by the fjord the snow rarely lingers. Here, the ”green” winter
has its own charm and spring arrives early. Why not rent a cabin and
enjoy a full weekend with family or friends, tranquil evenings and
great conversation by the fire? Maybe there is a sauna or heated wooden
tub and tempting group activities. For further information, please
contact Tourist Information or visit www.ryfylke.com.

6 Kjerag
www.visitlysefjorden.no
The Kjerag mountains rise majestically up to 1084 m above the
innermost part and southern shore of the Lysefjord. The plateau
at the top, with its stupendous view of the fjord and
the entire region, attracts a
growing numbers of visitors.
One dramatic attraction is
Kjeragbolten, a boulder
wedged into a crack in the
mountain, and many have
stood here high above the
abyss! Kjerag also attracts
base jumpers and rock
climbers.
The trail up to Kjerag from
Øygardsstøl by Lysevegen
road above Lysebotn is
demanding but safe; the
10 km hike (round trip) climbs
570 m. Good shoes and
physical health are advised!
To get to Øygardstøl, take
the ferry to Lysebotn and
continue by car or by bus (in

the season), or drive there via
Sirdalen (this road is closed in
the winter). There is a information and service facility at
Øygardsstøl. WC. Open during the summer. Paid parking.
Kjerag and the famous Kjeragbolten may also be enjoyed in a
relaxed manner - from the deck of a ferry or sightseeing boat
on the fjord!

3 Pulpit Rock - Preikestolen
www.visitlysefjorden.no
Pulpit Rock (Preikestolen) rises a sheer 604 m above the water, not
far from the mouth of the Lysefjord. It is by far the best known
tourist attraction in the Ryfylke region. The plateau at the top,
which measures about 25 x 25 m, was most likely formed by successive periods of frost 10,000 years ago. From Preikestolen Mountain
Lodge a trail climbs the rest of the 350 m to the top. The walk is a 7
km round trip. Good shoes and physical health are necessary for this
hike. In summer season there are daily buses from the ferry quay at
Tau to Preikestolen Mountain Lodge, which offers accommodation,
meals and good conversation with other guests. Kiosk open in the
season. Paid parking. Many visitors also enjoy Preikestolen from the
sightseeing boats, ferries and express boats that traffic the Lysefjord.

Lysebotn
Innermost in the magnificent Lysefjord lies the village of Lysebotn,
the perfect base for exploring the fjord and nearby mountains.
The road down to Lysebotn passes through 27 exciting hairpin
bends. Open in the summer. (For road conditions, please call
tel. 175). See round trips on p. 69.
Π1
Lysefjord in Ryfylke
The famous, 40 km long Lysefjord, surrounded by impressive
mountains and cliffs carved out during successive Ice Ages is the
dominant feature of Forsand municipality. For a magnificent view
of the fjord, you must walk to the top of Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock)
or the Kjerag mountains. Unforgettable! If you’re ready for the big
challenge, hike the Lysefjord circuit. You can also experience the
Lysefjord by sightseeing boat, express boat or ferry - or perhaps
you’re lucky enough to be enjoying a holiday aboard your own vessel.
Along the fjord there are many charming ports of call, and you may
spot seals, goats and a wide variety of bird species. Frequent
departures during the summer. For details, please see ad on p. 67
for boat and bus routes or visit www.tide.no.

7 Landa - prehistoric village - a living history
www.visitlysefjorden.no
Fossanmoen is the site of extensive remains from the Landa
village, a remarkable and unique chapter in Norwegian history.
Our ancestors lived here continuously for 2000 years, from
about 1500 BC to AD 600. Reconstruction aims to recreate
something of the atmosphere that prevailed 3000 years ago.
The first building, a Bronze Age house, was displayed in 1995.
See history come alive! Participate in fascinating activities in this
reconstructed village. For opening hours and activities, please
see www.visitlysefjorden.no.

12 Flørli Powerstation
www.visitlysefjorden.no
In 1999, a new power station was opened deep inside the
mountain at Flørli. The old power station, with its beautiful
Art Nouveau architecture, is now used for new activities. A good
network of trails invites you to roam and explore the area. For
an ultimate endurance test, you can climb the 4444 steps beside
the old pipestock - with or without a stopwatch! If your feet are
inspired for longer walking, you can continue to the Kjerag and
Blåfjellenden mountains (approx. one day). A good alternative is
to explore the old power station, enjoying its historical and art
exhibitions, before relaxing with a good meal in the café.
Accommodation available during the summer. The power
station is only open during the summer. For further information,

Tel. 51 74 31 40
A copy of the Kjølevik stone was made by Kåre Tveit and unveiled
in 1982 at Kjølevik, Strand in Ryfylke. The original was found
100 years earlier in the ceiling of a potato cellar in Kjølevik.
A year later, this original stone was moved to the collection of
the University of Oslo, where it is now exhibited. The inscription
of Old Norse runes probably dates back to the time of migrations
in 400-450 AD.

Industrial Workers Museum is housed in one of these homes.
Here you can gain firsthand insights into how workers and
their families lived during the 1920s and 1960s, observing the
contrasts. The museum also has an exhibition of photographs
documenting life and work at the smelting plant. Guided tours
round Åbøbyen and the Museum of the Industrial Worker every
day at 12:00. NB: advance booking at Sauda Ferie & Fritid (the
Tourist Office). Adults NOK 50, children free. Off-season: groups

Svandalsfossen is a waterfall just before Saudasjøen, by trunk
road Rv520, soon part of a new National scenic road. From
beneath the bridge, you can experience the falls up close, or you
can ascend the trail and stairs up to the main waterfall itself.
Jettegrytene (potholes) in Åbødalen are a fine walking
destination. These potholes in the rockface were formed by
swirling water and gravel and other abrasive materials. Some are
located just a few hundred metres from the parking area, and
they’re perfect for a refreshing bath!
Kastfoss falls, beautifully situated just a stone’s throw from the
town centre.
Høllandsfossen falls are also located a short distance from the town
centre. A charming old stone bridge leads you to the waterfall.
The Røldal Road between Sauda and Røldal, will soon become
part of a new national scenic road. In the course of just 15
minutes, you pass from the fjord to alpine mountains through
magnificent varied landscapes.
