Capture the essence of the time in stories of the war shared in song and drama, pondering the Anne Frank House exhibit, visiting related sites during DOORS OPEN (Sat only) and touring Stratford’s wartime housing, Avalon Subdivision developed 70 years ago. Commemorating 70 years since the end of WWII Perth County War Brides Exhibit El & Etta Foreman – December 24, 1945 On Saturday, June 6, DOORS OPEN presents 12 sites to explore free, inside and out commemorating 70 years since the end of WWII. View some of Stratford’s finest landmarks and share our WWII stories including Perth County War Brides, Dutch liberation, wing spar production for the Mosquito bombers and war memorabilia as you tour historical sites, two private post-war homes, an historic church, Avondale cemetery war graves and Stratford’s Cenotaph, designed by one of Canada’s prominent sculptors, W.S. Allward. Theatre School $ Stratford Perth Museum June 6 – October 12 Explore a unique exhibit from the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam telling the story of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl who went into hiding during WWII to escape the Nazis. This exhibit prompts us to reflect on the role of politics in today’s society and includes new content examining the role Canadian soldiers played during WWII and in liberating Holland in 1945. The exhibit coincides with the Stratford Festival’s The Diary of Anne Frank at the Avon Theatre. Book advance tickets at www.stratfordperthmuseum.ca . Same day tickets for sale at the museum. PWD The “Queen of the Square”, situated on a triangular site, is an example of Queen Anne revival style. Each side is a twelve-sided shape, with the centre a hexagon and the tower a circle. The corner stone was laid in 1898 and City Council meetings began in January 1900. Not to be missed: War Brides exhibit in the newly renovated Council Chamber. STRATFORD ARMOURY 80 Waterloo Street, South N5A 4A9 2. PW The Armoury was built in 1905 in a Baronial Gothic style of architecture, featuring crenelated towers. Home of the Perth Regiment for many years, it is now used by the 4th Battalion of the Royal Canadian Regiment. Not to be missed: Stone work and crenelations on the tower. CENOTAPH & MEMORIAL GARDENS 60 York St. & 60 Ontario St. N5A 3H2 3. PW Designed by the prominent Canadian sculptor, W.S. Allward (1894-1955) who also created the monument at Vimy Ridge in France, this memorial was completed in 1922 and features the classical theme of ‘right versus might’. Not to be missed: Names of those who died in WWI, WWII & the Korean War and the Perth Regiment Memorial. PW Original farm house of the Scholz Family tanning business was sold as a memorial for Major Loghrin to the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 8. The front of the Legion is still the original home with visible stone walls from the outside, but over the years several additions have been added. No hats allowed! Not to be missed: Collection of war memorabilia, Red Cross display & Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire display. ST. JAMES ANGLICAN CHURCH 41 Mornington Street N5A 7P4 5. PWD The Parish was founded in 1840. The present building, designed by Henry Langley in early English Gothic style, was consecrated in 1870. The church’s history includes connections to the Royal Family and the Perth Regiment. Not to be missed: 175th Anniversary exhibit, a visit to the bell tower to ring the chimes, chime concerts and meet author and artist, Edward Payne. DUTCH MEMORIAL 5 William Street N5A 4X9 6. P This memorial was a gift from the Netherlands after WWII as a token of appreciation for Stratford`s hospitality to hundreds of Dutch soldiers who came to Stratford to form a battalion. The pair of hands symbolizes Canada’s support; the dove is symbolic of the Netherlands. Not to be missed: The message is written in both English and Dutch. 7. P A prominent Canadian furniture manufacturer produced wing spars for Mosquito bombers, rattan gun mats for heavy howitzers and furniture for military use. They employed 200 on war contracts and hired and trained ‘girls’ to read mechanical drawings and use calipers, vernier scales and woodworking tools. Not to be missed: Wing spar history, Turnbull Freight elevator (circa. 1910) and original maple floors. (NOT ACTUAL HOMES ON TOUR) AVALON SUBDIVISION Post-war housing (1946-1958) 70 Coriano Street & 145 Glastonbury Crescent N5A 6C3 8. P Returning WWII soldiers created a post-war housing boom. Tour quintessential post-war homes and learn about the history of the Avalon subdivision. Information, history and maps are available at the Glastonbury parkette. Wartime housing was built on Normandy, Glastonbury, Coriano, Somerset and Mercer Streets. Not to be missed: Hand-made furniture and original kitchen and rare 2nd storey designed home. AVONDALE CEMETERY – New Soldiers’ Section 4 Avondale Avenue N5A 6M5 9. P Military markers/gravestones tell the poignant story of those who served in World War II. Marked by a flag pole the New Soldiers’ Section is across from Block 5. Historical Information on soldiers buried in this section and other sections will be available at the site. The station played key roles in the movement of troops and supplies throughout both world wars. In 1871 GTR built a locomotive repair shop that drew many skilled workers to the city.
