MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
At Doctors Hospital at Renaissance we do not consider
ourselves merely a hospital, but wholly a community hospital.
We feel it is our obligation to not only take care of families
seeking care at our facilities but to also provide leadership and
support for programs and activities in our community. We
were founded in the Rio Grande Valley and we are committed
to fully serving the Rio Grande Valley. It is our goal to respond
to demonstrated health-related needs and seek to improve
access to health services, enhance public health, and relieve
the burden of being one of the most underserved areas in
the nation.
We are honored to care for patients and as
your trusted healthcare provider in South Texas,
we aim to deliver unsurpassed excellence in every
capacity – quality, safety, patient satisfaction,
financial performance, infrastructure, and more.
Israel J. Rocha
DHR Chief Executive Officer
As changes in healthcare continue, we maintain our
commitment to serving the health and wellness needs of
our community. By forming partnerships with world-class
institutions such as Cleveland Clinic, Joslin Diabetes Center,
Harvard Medical School, the University of Texas Health
Science Center San Antonio, and now the University of TexasRio Grande Valley, DHR is diligently working to bring superior
healthcare services to South Texas. Working together with
the esteemed leaders and business owners of our community,
we will continue to provide the highest quality of services for
years to come.
While the following book is not an exhaustive list of the many
developments taking place at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
Health System, I hope it provides a glimpse into the rapid and
tremendous growth that is taking place in healthcare in the
Rio Grande Valley. Thank you for the opportunity to share with
you these exciting advances; I invite you to visit our campus
to witness the growth that is taking place as we continue to
provide unprecedented, quality healthcare services for
our community.

Edinburg, paying $96.6 million in taxes alone, which ranked us
among the top tax payers in Hidalgo County.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is a part of the community
that we serve. Our 4,000 employees are the backbone of
our organization, and greatly contribute to our success as
an organization. Our employees come from different areas
in the Valley, as well as Texas, other states, and even other
countries. Regardless of where they originated, they have
now made the Rio Grande Valley their home, and with that,
have taken on the responsibility of meeting our community’s
health needs.
Charitable Giving
The Rio Grande Valley is a unique community with a vibrant
culture that is evident throughout all of its cities. Providing
quality health care to a community of over 1.3 million residents
across four counties has been our goal from day one.
Understanding the demographics of our state and region is
important to understanding the very reasons why DHR was
established and the goals we continue to strive for. With more
than 90% of the local population being of Hispanic origin,
we recognize the need to focus on conditions that are more
prevalent among this demographic.
The percentage of those in the Rio Grande Valley on Medicaid
in 2013 was 28%, with an additional 1 in 3 of the population not
having any type of medical insurance. At Doctors Hospital at
Renaissance, about 70% of our patients are either Medicaid
or Medicare. Due to our community’s restricted access to
health care, we make it our mission to provide preventive
health services and education, free of charge. For example,
at the annual Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Community
Health Fair, community members are provided with free health
screenings, medical information, education and health related
services.
In 2014, we provided $137,781,302 in uncompensated and
charity care. We understand that members of the community
are not able to receive primary and preventative health care
services, due to the costs that are associated. For those
patients who do cannot access primary care services, any care
that we can provide will benefit their health. This grants us the
opportunity to introduce them to information about health
services that can manage their condition, and decrease their
risk for reoccurrence.
Along with meeting the health needs of our community, we are
also contributing to the health of our local economy. Doctors
Hospital at Renaissance has helped fuel the region’s economy
by generating nearly $2.3 billion in economic output over the
past three years. In 2014, we were ranked the top taxpayer in
4
We recognize that caring for our community goes beyond
treating physical ailments and diseases, especially when
working with underserved areas. DHR remains a highly
collaborative member of its community, financially
supporting and actively partnering with a wide range of
organizations that share our commitment to ensuring a
healthy community.
We are also privileged to have the opportunity to give back
to our community in the form of volunteer work. The staff at
DHR, as well as our volunTEENs, have contributed over 8,100
hours of volunteer work this year alone.
Since opening, DHR has provided over
15,000,000
$
in funding, donations and in-kind support for health
organizations, education providers, and other community
groups in an effort to ensure the continued vitality and
growth of our region.
We provide sponsorships for events hosted by a wide
array of local entities, such as the March of Dimes, McAllen
Pregnancy Center, Palm Valley Animal Center, South Texas
Lyric Opera, American Red Cross South Texas Chapter,
Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, Easter Seals RGV,
South Texas Literacy Coalition, and more than 100 other
local organizations.
Two of the larger annual events that we sponsor include the “Fishing for Hope” Tournament and the VAMOS Golf Tournament.
Annual Fishing for Hope Tournament
VAMOS
DHR is in its 10th year of hosting the “Fishing for Hope”
Tournament, with proceeds benefiting the Hope Family
Health Center. Now the largest non-profit tournament on the
Gulf coast, “Fishing for Hope” is a family-friendly and fun event
for people of all ages. Over the past nine years, the tournament
has been able to raise more than $1.4 million through the
generous support of our community members, physicians,
and hospital leaders.
Since its establishment in 1996, the Valley Alliance of Mentors
for Opportunities and Scholarships (VAMOS) has awarded
over 300 local students with scholarship funding worth more
than $7,400,000. Through our support of VAMOS, DHR hopes
to assist with providing ample educational opportunities
for the deserving students of our community. It is through
higher education that we ensure the future of our community
– education propels individuals to become our leaders, our
scientists, our professionals and our innovators for the future.
Hope Family Health Center (HFHC) is located in McAllen and is
run by local volunteer physicians and staff, all of which provide
their time and services without charge. HFHC provides free
health services in an open and accepting atmosphere to
all residents living in the Rio Grande Valley who are without
access to health care or medical insurance.
Employees are the heart of
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Health System
In 2014, DHR announced the raise of its minimum wage for
all employees to $11 per hour. The goal of the increase was to
give additional support those employees who are critical to
the hospital’s ability to provide the ideal environment, quality
services, and compassionate care that every patient deserves.
While patient care is, and will always be, our number one
priority, the employees at DHR are the heart of all that we do.

Physician Recruitment
At the time of Day Surgery at Renaissance’s formation in 1997, the goal was to deliver medical services that were not readily
accessible. 18 years later, it is still our goal to advance the state of healthcare in the Rio Grande Valley. Being in a medically
underserved area, our region is isolated from a greater quantity of specialized services available in other large metropolitan areas.
This is why we are dedicated to investing our resources into physician recruitment, to bring about a higher level of care.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Health System is proud to offer a wide-variety of health services. We currently offer 70 subspecialties, some of which are the only services available south of San Antonio. Over the past year we’ve recruited more than
20 physicians, in areas such as pediatric urology, orthopedic trauma surgery, maternal fetal medicine, bariatric surgery, and
rheumatology. We expect for another 20 physicians to join DHR before the end of the year.
Services and Specialty Divisions
Mobile Health Clinic
The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Mobile Health Clinic
was launched in 2014 in response to the growing need to
reach patients in our community. The Mobile Health Clinic,
home to the Vision Care Center at Renaissance, provides
comprehensive vision exams, preventative eye screenings for
early detection of eye illnesses, education, and counseling.
The Mobile Health Clinic works cooperatively with community
organizations to ensure that our local children receive annual
vision exams and the primary care they deserve. The Mobile
Health Clinic partners with the Boys and Girls Club, Hidalgo
County Headstart, local school districts, Hidalgo County WIC
clinics, the RGV Food Bank and many other entities to bring
vision services to children and families in our community. Over
the next year, our goal is to expand the services provided by the
Mobile Health Clinic to include primary care, vaccinations and
immunizations, and laboratory services.
Urgent Care Center at Renaissance
Conveniently located in close proximity to the emergency
room, the Urgent Care Center at Renaissance provides
expedient, time-efficient care for all non-life-threatening
injuries and illnesses, seven days a week from 4:30 PM until 2:30
AM; no appointment is necessary. Patients are seen and treated
by a physician or nurse practitioner promptly. The Urgent Care
Center at Renaissance has a full-service laboratory, and x-ray
imaging capabilities.
School Based Health Centers
The Edinburg CISD and PSJA ISD School Based Health Centers
are strategically located within the school districts to allow for
timely access to a healthcare provider. Basic health services
that are available include physical exams, vision and hearing
tests, diabetes risk assessments, laboratory tests, behavioral
health, counseling services, chronic condition management,
vaccines, acute illness and minor injury management, and
health nutrition and education.
The School Based Health Centers are staffed by a team of
skilled physicians, nurses, counselors, and other healthcare
practitioners. The Edinburg CISD and PSJA ISD School Based
Health Centers are designed to serve as a “medical home” for
our students, employees, and their families.

Neonatal Intensive Care
The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance hosts a Level 3C
Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, providing the most advanced
level of care available for the smallest and sickest babies. The
NICU at the Women’s Hospital at Renaissance has set the
standard for neonatal intensive care in this area, which can
be attributed to its unique philosophy and systematic design.
The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance has consistently ranked
among the top 5% of neonatal intensive care units in the world.
For the majority of complications caused by prematurity—
chronic lung disease, intraventricular hemorrhage, necrotizing
enterocolitis, and retinopathy of prematurity—the WHR
NICU ranks in the top 1% in the world.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance recently established the
Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, which grew from a
need to care for increasingly complicated pregnancies and
from new technologies that provide greater opportunity to
evaluate and treat problems involving the baby. Our board
certified physicians specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and
ongoing care for expectant mothers and their unborn babies
who are at a high risk for special health problems.
The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Center for Maternal Fetal
Medicine provides a full range of gynecologic reproductive
healthcare services from pre-conception through delivery
and recovery. Dr. Cherie Johnson and Dr. Kedak Baltajian,
along with our highly skilled neonatologists, obstetrician/
gynecologists, geneticists, psychotherapists, and nutritionists,
are able to provide mothers in the Rio Grande Valley with a
comprehensive range of women’s healthcare services.

Renaissance Laboratories
In 2013, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance opened its 24,000
square foot state-of-the-art laboratory, the first of its caliber
in the Rio Grande Valley. Renaissance Laboratories effectively
consolidated DHR’s pathology and outpatient laboratory
services, which has allowed for the provision of high quality,
cost effective, and timely patient care results. Core services
provided are clinical chemistry, microbiology, histology,
transfusion services, hematology, coagulation, and urinalysis.
This facility also has the capacity for infectious disease testing
and parasitology. We are home to the only automated blood
bank instrument in the RGV and we are the only local facility
that can perform methotrexates testing for fragile pediatric
patients undergoing daily chemotherapy.
The Urology Institute at Renaissance
The Urology Institute at Renaissance is a one-of-a-kind, all
inclusive clinic that provides state-of-the-art urologic care in
the Rio Grande Valley. The physicians at the Urology Institute
at Renaissance have made it their mission to provide a vast
array of services so patients no longer have to travel out of the
region to be treated for urologic disorders and diseases. We
have the only fellowship trained physicians in Reconstructive
Pelvic Medicine (Dr. Henry Ruiz), Robotic Surgery (Dr.
Gaudencio Olgin), and Pediatric Urology Surgery (Dr. James
Sander).
Heart Institute at Renaissance
In an effort to better serve our patients and community, a
group of like-minded cardiologists shared the vision of
becoming leaders in the healthcare industry. In 2015, the
Heart Institute at Renaissance was established to infuse a
new synergy that will lead to a stronger and united group
practice that is poised to provide the best cardiology care
in the Rio Grande Valley. Through the robust collaboration
of thirteen experienced cardiologists, our patients receive
comprehensive services, state-of-the-art technology and
modern amenities—with some of the fastest treatment times
in the nation.
The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance
As the only healthcare facility dedicated solely to women in
South Texas, WHR is committed to providing women and
their families with highest standard of family-focused, safe, and
comfortable care. Women’s Hospital at Renaissance:
- Features a 145-bed free standing hospital
- Houses the largest and most successful neonatal intensive
care units in the county
- Is ranked 2nd in the State of Texas for number of deliveries
- Is ranked 12th in the United States for number of deliveries
- Our highly-trained and qualified nursing staff is committed
to providing education and support for our new families.
The education classes, offered free of charge in both English
and Spanish, help new parents understand postpartum
healthcare concerns and address the unique needs of
newborns.
- In addition to new parent education classes, WHR provides
the only certified Lamaze classes in South Texas, lactation
consultants, and an annual free car seat check event.
Nurse-Family Partnership
The Nurse-Family Partnership at the Women's Hospital at
Renaissance (NFP-WHR), is the first extensive home visit and
maternal outreach program in South Texas to bring nurses
into the homes of underprivileged, and first-time expectant
mothers in Hidalgo and Willacy counties. The goal of the
program is to improve maternal and child health, prevent
child injuries, child abuse, or maltreatment, reduce emergency
room visits, improve school readiness and achievement,
reduce crime or domestic violence, and improve
family economic self-sufficiency.
The new mom receives regular visits from a RN early in her
pregnancy and the home visits continue through her child’s
second birthday. The nurses interpret the mother’s interests
and goals to promote health during pregnancy, proper child
care, and personal growth and development. The NurseFamily Partnership employs six full-time nurse-home visitors
and has over 135 clients and 43 program graduates.
Renaissance Gastroenterology
Renaissance Gastroenterology is dedicated to meeting
and exceeding the gastrointestinal healthcare needs of the
residents in the Rio Grande Valley. Our experienced physicians
are devoted to the study, diagnosis, and treatment of disorders
that may affect the esophagus, stomach, small intestine,
large intestine (colon), rectum, liver, gallbladder, or pancreas.
Our board certified physicians perform all procedures in an
endoscopy lab that has been awarded for its quality and safety.

Partnerships and Affiliations
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance aims to affiliate and partner with the world’s leaders in the provision of health services. The
Board of Managers at DHR are dedicated to building an integrated healthcare system focused on improving quality, efficiency,
and patient access, as well as managing and improving the health of our local population. They understand that quality healthcare
delivery is achieved through integration and providing seamless access to specialized services.

Bariatric and Metabolic Institute in affiliation with
Cleveland Clinic Bariatric and Metabolic Institute
In April 2014, DHR announced its affiliation with Cleveland
Clinic Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, which gives DHR access
and ability to implement Cleveland Clinic’s best practices,
patient and safety initiatives, clinical pathways and protocols
here at home. “Our affiliation with Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric
and Metabolic Institute will bring to the Valley resources,
expertise, opportunities, and services that currently don’t
exist in this region,” states Marissa Castañeda, DHR Senior
Executive Vice President and Chief Operations Officer.
Patients at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance now enjoy greater
access to world-class management of obesity and related
diseases, bariatric surgery, clinical trials, treatment protocols
and additional research opportunities.
Texas A&M Health Science Center
Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance formed a pharmacy
residency program in partnership with Texas A&M Health
Science Center Irma Lerma Rangel College of Pharmacy,
recruiting the best and brightest pharmacy graduates to
continue bringing the best patient care to the our area. The
residency program expands the hospital’s clinical team by
two faculty pharmacists, which allows for the creation of
medication therapy management clinics aimed at extending
DHR’s pharmacy and patient care services. The program will
also create opportunity for additional community service and
public health activities, such as immunization drives, health
screenings, drug take-back days, and health fairs.
Joslin Diabetes Center
Affiliate at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
In the Rio Grande Valley, the rates of obesity and diabetes is
1.4 times higher than those reported nationally for Mexican
Americans aged 20 years or older and nearly twice as high as
in all Americans (aged 40-59 years) . Even more startling, is an
estimated 1 in 3 individuals in the RGV have diabetes. To combat
these statistics—and to battle the area’s historically limited
access to innovative treatment options—Doctors Hospital
at Renaissance formed a partnership with Joslin Diabetes
Center, the global leader in diabetes research, education, and
care. The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Doctors Hospital
at Renaissance offers the latest advances for treating diabetes
and its complications, as well as providing patient education
and support services. Formed in 2012, the local affiliate is now
the largest in the country aside from the original Bostonbased clinic.

Latino Medical Student Association
Over the last several years, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
has forged a relationship with the Latino Medical Student
Association (LMSA), providing an annual conference for
chapter leaders from across the country. The goal of the
conference is to promote the educational and professional
development of current and future Latino healthcare
professionals. Doctors Hospital at Renaissance physicians and
department leaders strive to educate these future physicians
on issues that affect the Latino community, as well as work to
cultivate and develop the students’ leadership, organizational,
and advocacy skills.
University of Houston
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance formed a healthcare
administration fellowship program with the University of
Houston. This postgraduate program provides valuable insight
to the healthcare environment for driven and passionate
young professionals while also establishing a pool of talent
to join and strengthen the Valley’s workforce. The yearlong
program exposes fellows to a learning environment that is
both broad-based and insular in nature as they participate in
cross-functional educational experiences and are expected
to develop knowledge and skills in a health service setting
with organizational responsibilities ranging from planning,
program development and implementation.
University of Texas Health Science Center
San Antonio
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is in the process of forming a
pediatric cardiovascular surgery affiliation with the University
of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. Local pediatric
cardiologists Dr. Assad Alhroob and Dr. Amar Khan are working
with San Antonio’s Dr. Roozbeh Taeed and Dr. Syed Husain to
form a comprehensive pediatric cardiovascular program in
the Rio Grande Valley. It is our mission to provide more than
cardiology care to the smallest of patients in our community
– we want to be at the forefront of discovering new diagnostic
and therapeutic treatment methods, discovering new
understandings of the causes of heart disease among children,
and improving the outcomes of children and their families
dealing with heart disease.
Join for Me
In 2013, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance began a 3-year
collaboration with OptumHealth Care Solutions, an affiliate
of United Healthcare Services, to implement programs that
focus on improving the health of our community. One such
program is Join for Me, a group intervention program for
families of children who struggle with extra weight and its
added complications. Join for Me is a caring way to build
healthy habits and get children to a healthier weight; program
directors work with families to teach life lessons so that
everyone feels good about themselves.

Graduate Medical Education
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is dedicated to ensuring
that our patients are able to access and receive the best care
possible, and through our collaboration with the University of
Texas Rio Grande Valley, we will be able to do so. Our community
will be able to develop in ways that would not have been made
available to us if not for this medical school. The University of
Texas Rio Grande Valley and Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
are both leading the way to improve our economy through
health care. We are looking forward to seeing our community
grow and are grateful to be a part of the process.
In late 2012, The Federal Government and the Centers for
Medicare and Medicaid Services approved the State of Texas
Social Security Act Section 1115 Waiver, which has made it
possible for Doctors Hospital at Renaissance to develop a
residency training program that will work hand-in-hand with
the newly formed University of Texas Rio Grande Valley School
of Medicine. In 2014, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance invested
over $60 million to develop a graduate medical education
program.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is one of --the primary
teaching hospitals for the University of Texas Rio Grande
Valley School of Medicine. Initially, four residency programs
were launched July 1, 2015—internal medicine, obstetrics
and gynecology, general surgery, and family medicine. DHR
is exploring the creation of additional residency programs in
pediatrics, podiatry, anesthesia, emergency medicine, urology,
orthopedics, radiology, and pathology.
14
Each of these new residency programs will produce boardeligible physicians who are excellent clinicians capable and
ready to enter the independent practice of medicine in the
community. The residency programs will not only provide
further educational opportunities for physicians, but they
will improve the accessibility of health care in our community.
With 26 residents starting in 2015, it is projected that in 10
years, through the onset of graduate medical education, more
than 375 new physicians will be providing care in the Rio Grande
Valley. The need for a residency program and medical school
in the RGV is clear: with a population of nearly 1.5 million, there
are only 110 doctors per 100,000 people – half of the national
rate and well below the Texas average.
In addition, to the graduate medical education program,
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance supports a wide variety
of educational initiatives and programs in the Rio Grande
Valley. We hold 62 program licensing agreements, including
agreements with local high schools, technical colleges, and
vocational schools. On any given day, we have up to 250
students working on our campus.
Excellence, School of Leadership and Development, School of
Revenue Cycle, and School of Technical Support. Each school
in DHR University provides participating employees with the
knowledge and skills to understand all of the operational and
technical facets of their job duties. All class curriculum and
training materials are developed in-house, by experienced
personnel with a focus on establishing a culture of positive
change.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance has plans in place to expand
DHR University, to build an institution of higher education
that will cultivate learning, advancement, and innovation to
meet the healthcare needs of our community. Our aim is to
further strengthen DHR’s link between the community and
education, creating a pipeline to fill the increasing need for
skilled positions in healthcare services.
Dual Enrollment Nursing Program
In early 2015, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance announced the
historic Associate Degree in Nursing Dual Enrollment Pilot
Program, which was formed in collaboration with Pharr-San
Juan-Alamo Independent School District (PSJA ISD), South
Texas College, Region One Education Service Center (Region
One), and Schools for South Texas Independent School
District (South Texas ISD). This collaborative pilot program
will provide students a pathway into health professions in an
unprecedented way. The dual enrollment program allows for
expanded educational opportunities while also addressing
the healthcare needs of our region by working to alleviate the
nursing shortage that challenges local healthcare providers.
DHR University
DHR University was created in 2011 with the purpose of
providing standardized training for employees, focusing on the
highest level of patient satisfaction. DHR University is currently
comprised of four distinct training schools: School of Clinical
Research Institute at Renaissance
The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Research Institute
was created in January 2014 under the direction of Dr. Lisa
R. Trevino, PhD. The institute has worked to establish and
expand partnerships with world-renowned pharmaceutical
industry leaders and academic medical centers to bring
leading technology and treatment to the Rio Grande Valley.
Presently, South Texans are extremely limited in their ability to
access innovative treatments due to limited access to leading
research centers. The goal of bringing clinical research to the
RGV is to provide patients with access to new, innovative, and
life-saving therapeutic treatment options and trial programs.
We are also fostering the drive of our own physicians that want
to engage in clinical research. As we move towards becoming
an academic medical center, it is our responsibility to be the
leaders in biomedical research and foster collaborations with
top-tiered research institutions. By recognizing the synergies
between biomedical research and health care delivery, we will
be providing our community with the treatment they need,
and more importantly, deserve.
