THE
RENAISSANCE
DIFFERENCE
We are honored to care for patients and as
your trusted healthcare provider in South
Texas, we aim to deliver unsurpassed
excellence in every capacity – quality, safety,
patient satisfaction, financial performance,
infrastructure, and more.
Israel Rocha, Jr.
DHR Chief Executive Officer
At Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
we do not consider ourselves merely
a hospital, but wholly a community
hospital. We feel it is our obligation
to not only take care of families
seeking care at our facilities but to
also provide leadership and support
for programs and activities in our
community. We were founded in
the Rio Grande Valley and we are
committed to fully serving the
Rio Grande Valley. It is our goal to
respond to demonstrated healthrelated needs and seek to improve
access to health services, enhance
public health, and relieve the burden
of being one of the most underserved
areas in the nation.
As changes in healthcare continue, we
maintain our commitment to serving
the health and wellness needs of our
community. By forming partnerships
with world-class institutions such
as Cleveland Clinic, Joslin Diabetes
Center, Harvard Medical School, the
University of Texas Health Science
Center San Antonio, and now the
University of Texas-Rio Grande
Valley, DHR is diligently working to
bring superior healthcare services to

South Texas. Working together with
the esteemed leaders and business
owners of our community, we will
continue to provide the highest
quality of services for years to come.
While the following report is not
an exhaustive list of the many
developments taking place at Doctors
Hospital at Renaissance Health
System, I hope it provides a glimpse
into the rapid and tremendous growth
that is taking place in healthcare in
the Rio Grande Valley. Thank you
for the opportunity to share with
you these exciting advances; I invite
you to visit our campus to witness
the growth that is taking place as we
continue to provide unprecedented,
quality healthcare services for
our community.

THE COMMUNITIES
WE SERVE:
Going beyond the hospital
to lend a helping hand
Community engagement has been a long-standing focus
of Doctors Hospital at Renaissance and remains crucial
to our mission. Our commitment is demonstrated by our
going beyond the hospital’s walls to serve people within
our communities through programs that promote wellness
and health equity, with efforts to reduce health disparities
and with increased access to care. We strive to mitigate the
social and economic determinants that contribute to poor
health outcomes, expand effective interventions, increase
access to comprehensive medical care, and improve the
quality of care we provide.
The Rio Grande Valley is a unique community
with a vibrant culture that is evident throughout
all of its cities. Providing quality health care to a
community of over 1.3 million residents across
four counties has been our goal from day one.

“Physicians that genuinely care about the community they serve. This is a
trickle-down effect that spills over to all healthcare providers in our community,
raising the bar on the quality of care offered in the Rio Grande Valley. Our vision
is vast and not only extends to the Valley or the state, but to the nation as a
whole. Setting the pace and being the leaders has been challenging, however, it
has made us the strongest physician-owned hospital in the country! I love and
care for my hospital as do my colleagues.”
Understanding the demographics of our state and
region is important to understanding the very reasons
why DHR was established and the goals we continue to
strive for. With more than 90% of the local population
being of Hispanic origin, we recognize the need to
ensure that conditions that are prevalent among this
demographic are addressed locally and nationally to
reverse health disparities.
In the Rio Grande Valley, 31% of the population does
not have health insurance, that’s nearly twice as high
as the ratio in Texas (16%). At Doctors Hospital at
Renaissance, about 75% of our patients use either
Medicaid or Medicare. Due to our community’s
restricted access to health care, we make it our
mission to provide preventive health services and
education, free of charge. For example, at the annual
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Community Health
Fair, community members are provided with free
health screenings, medical information, education
and health related services.
In 2014, we provided $107 million in uncompensated
and charity care. We understand that members of
the community are often not able to receive primary
and preventative health care services due to the costs
that are associated. For those patients who cannot
access primary care services, any care that we can
provide will benefit their health. This grants us the
opportunity to introduce them to information about
health services that can manage their condition, and
decrease their risk for reoccurrence.
Along with meeting the health needs of our
community, we are also contributing to the health of
our local economy. Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
has helped fuel the region’s economy by generating
nearly $2.3 billion in economic output over the past
three years. In 2014, DHR was ranked the top taxpayer
in Edinburg, paying over $3.9 million in taxes, which
also ranked us among the top tax payers in Hidalgo
County.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is a part of the
community that we serve. Our 4,000 employees are
the backbone of our hospital, and greatly contribute to
our success as an organization. Our employees come
from different areas in the Valley, as well as Texas,
other states, and even other countries. Regardless of
where they originated, they have now made the Rio
Grande Valley their home, and with that, have taken
on the responsibility of meeting our community’s
health needs.

CHARITABLE GIVING
1.
We recognize that caring for our community goes
beyond treating physical ailments and diseases,
especially when working with underserved areas.
DHR remains a highly collaborative member of
its community, financially supporting and actively
partnering with a wide range of organizations
that share our commitment to ensuring a healthy
community.
We are also privileged to have the opportunity to
give back to our community in the form of volunteer
work. The staff at DHR, as well as our volunTEENs,
has contributed over 10,000 hours of volunteer work
this year alone.
2.

HOPE FAMILY HEALTH CENTER
The Hope Family Health Center (HFHC) is a nonprofit
organization in McAllen that has provided free
medical and mental health care services for families in
our community since 1998.
An example of DHR’s involvement with HFHC is
its annual “Fishing for Hope Tournament” on South
Padre Island, TX. Now the largest non-profit fishing
tournament on the Gulf of Texas, “Fishing for Hope” has
raised over $1.6 million
over the past 10 years. The
annual tournament sees
over 1,000 anglers and
community members and
proves to be a fun-filled
weekend for the whole
family.
Now the largest non-profit fishing
tournament on the Gulf of Texas,
“Fishing for Hope” has raised over
$1.6
million
over the past
10 years.
Through its partnership with Doctors Hospital at
Renaissance, the Hope Family Health Center was able
to provide medical and mental health services for over
5,445 unfunded patients in 2015. Of those patients,
3,979 were treated by 16 DHR volunteer physicians
and medical staff. Through the 1115 Healthcare
Transformation Waiver, DHR provides a full-time
medical provider to treat patients at HFHC, ensuring
continuity of care, six days per week.
By striving to meet the healthcare needs of our
most underserved populations, DHR is gaining an
invaluable perspective on the underlying determinants
of health and disease, helping us to refine our approach
to care while minimizing disparities.

VAMOS
Since its establishment in
1996, the Valley Alliance of
Mentors for Opportunities
and Scholarships (VAMOS)
has awarded over 300 local students with scholarship
funding worth more than $7,400,000. Through
our support of VAMOS, DHR hopes to assist with
providing ample educational opportunities for the
deserving students of our community. It is through
higher education that we ensure the future of our
community – education propels individuals to become
our leaders, our scientists, our professionals and our
innovators for the future.
Since 2008, the Renaissance Center Foundation
has dedicated its efforts to building community
awareness while providing cancer education,
emotional support, financial assistance and
guidance for underserved patients. In 2015, over
$340,000 was used to help fund medical expenses,
patient navigation, and support services for
patients in South Texas. As the only hospital in
the Rio Grande Valley to receive accreditation
from the Commission on Cancer, our patients
have access to more specialized medical and
support services, including salon services,
massage therapy, and grocery delivery.
Throughout the year, the Renaissance Cancer
Foundation hosts Cancer Support Groups on a
monthly basis that provide the opportunity for
our patients and their caregivers to interact with
others who are also on their way to recovery. Our
support groups helped over 120 patients in 2015
to connect with individuals who understand the
everyday struggles of receiving a cancer diagnosis,
and gain the support they need to courageously
fight their battle with cancer.
In order to stay on the road to recovery, patients must have
access to medical and support services. Transportation
services are offered for those who do not have the means
to get to their physician appointment, therapy procedures,
and check-ups.

SCHOOL BASED HEALTH CENTERS
At Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, we strive to meet
the comprehensive health needs of our community,
including our youngest of residents. Working
with local school districts, it became evident the
strong link between children’s health and academic
performance. In an effort to mitigate the rate of
absenteeism—student and teacher—DHR launched
its first two school-based health centers over the
past year. The school-based health centers attend to
the unmet healthcare needs of students and staff by
placing healthcare where and when it’s needed most.
By identifying and addressing health problems that
may interfere with the learning process, the DHR
school-based health centers support the educational
environment by helping kids stay in school.
In 2015, the Edinburg CISD and PSJA ISD School
Based Health Centers provided healthcare services
for over 4,400 children and adults.
The Edinburg CISD and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo
ISD School Based Health Centers provide a stable
medical home for students, employees, and their
families. Primary medical care, nutrition, counseling,
vaccines, sports physicals, and more are provided
for a low cost to families who may or may not have
insurance. The mission of the school-based health
centers is to keep students healthy and in school. The
clinics not only provide care for the physical needs
of the child, but can also provide mental care and
counseling for children with behavioral concerns in
the classroom and at home. The collective goal is to
narrow disparities, increase access to care, promote
educational achievement, and build a system of
support for our communities.

IMPROVING ACCESS:
Providing healthcare
for a better tomorrow
At Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, we are working tirelessly to
advance the state of medicine, to improve clinical outcomes, to
increase access to care, and to save more lives. For our partner
physicians and dedicated medical staff, this means diligently searching
for ways to better diagnose and treat patients while embracing the
latest technologies. For our 4,000 employees, this means exerting an
uncompromising commitment to deliver the best care possible using
the safest methods—every patient, every encounter, every time.
At the time of Day
Surgery at Renaissance’s
formation in 1997, the
goal was to deliver
medical services
that were not readily
accessible. Eighteen
years later, it is still our
goal to advance the state
of healthcare in the Rio
Grande Valley.

What do you think is the most remarkable
thing about DHR?
James Sander, M.D.
Pediatric Urology
Pediatric Urology Institute
at Renaissance
“Growth at DHR means that significant change has come to DHR. We are evolving
from a community hospital to a tertiary care hospital, where other hospitals in
our community will send us patients for a higher level of care instead of sending
patients to Houston, San Antonio or Corpus Christi. We are changing from a
community hospital to a medical center where faculty will teach residents and
medical students to care for sick patients. This is a model that the Rio Grande
Valley has not experienced in the past, thus there is some fear of the unknown
and even some hesitancy to embark on this new journey. However, this change,
this growth, will bring a bright future for DHR, a bright future for the Rio Grande
Valley and most importantly a bright future for the care of our patients.”
PHYSICIAN RECRUITMENT
Being in a medically underserved area, our region is
isolated from a greater quantity of specialized services
available in other large metropolitan areas. This is
why DHR is dedicated to investing in resources for
physician recruitment, to bring about a higher level
of care for our community.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is proud to offer a
wide-variety of health services. We currently offer 70
sub-specialties, some of which are the only services
available south of San Antonio. We have made it
our responsibility to ensure that the residents of the
RGV receive comprehensive, world-class health care
right here at home. Our community can now receive
services from birth to end-of-life, and everything in
between.
In an effort to bring specialized health services to the
Rio Grande Valley, DHR recruited over 20 physicians
in 2015 alone.
The specialties of these physicians include:
Bariatric surgery
Cardiology
Emergency Medicine
Endocrinology
Endovascular Neurology
Hospice and Palliative care
Maternal Fetal Medicine
Neurology
Orthopedic Surgery
Rheumatology
Transplant Nephrology
Urologic Surgery
In addition, five physicians have signed contracts
and will be starting within the next year. There are
currently 11 physicians that are in the recruitment
process, specializing in areas such as:
• ENT
• Hematology
• Oncology
• Pediatric Surgery
• Pediatric Nephrology
• Pediatric Orthopedics
• Pediatric Critical Care
• Pediatric Emergency Medicine
• Transplant Surgery
SERVICES AND SPECIALTY DIVISIONS
Mobile Health Clinic
Some of the most meaningful healthcare experiences take
place outside of the hospital with patients who do not have
the means to see a healthcare professional. That’s why we
come to them. The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Mobile
Health Clinic partners with community organizations
to improve the health status of our most vulnerable
community members through prevention, intervention
and outreach.
The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Mobile Health
Clinic was launched in response to the growing need
to reach patients in our community. The Mobile Health
Clinic, home to the Vision Care Center at Renaissance,
provides comprehensive vision exams, preventative eye
screenings for early detection of eye illnesses, education,
and counseling.
Through DHR Mobile Health
Clinic visits,
760+
unfunded
patients and
630+
medicaid patients
were provided with vision
screenings and disease
education.
An additional
380+
lens prescriptions
were provided.

The Mobile Health Clinic works cooperatively with
community organizations to ensure that our local children
receive annual vision exams and the primary care they
deserve. The Mobile Health Clinic partners with the Boys
and Girls Club, Hidalgo County Headstart, local school
districts, Hidalgo County WIC clinics, the RGV Food Bank
and many other entities to bring vision services to children
and families in our community.
In 2015, the DHR Mobile Health Clinic partnered with 18
community organizations to provide vision services to the
unfunded and underserved members of our community.
Through these visits, over 760 unfunded patients and 630
Medicaid patients were provided with vision screenings and
disease education. An additional 380+ lens prescriptions
were provided.
Over the next year, our goal is to expand the services
provided by the Mobile Health Clinic to include primary
care, vaccinations and immunizations, and laboratory
services.
Urgent Care Center at Renaissance
Conveniently located in close proximity to the emergency
room, the Urgent Care Center at Renaissance provides
expedient, time-efficient care for all non-life-threatening
injuries and illnesses, seven days a week. Open Monday Friday from 4:30 PM until 2:30 AM and Saturday from 12:00
PM - 12:00 AM with no appointment necessary, patients
are seen and treated by a physician or nurse practitioner
promptly. The Urgent Care Center at Renaissance has a
full-service laboratory and x-ray imaging capabilities.
The Women’s Hospital
at Renaissance has
consistently ranked
among the top
5%
of neonatal intensive
care units in the world.
Neonatal Intensive Care
The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance hosts a Level
3C Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, providing the
most advanced level of care available for the smallest
and sickest babies. The NICU at the Women’s
Hospital at Renaissance has set the standard for
neonatal intensive care in this area, which can be
attributed to its unique philosophy and systematic
design. The Women’s Hospital at Renaissance has
consistently ranked among the top 5% of neonatal
intensive care units in the world. For the majority of
complications caused by prematurity—chronic lung
disease, intraventricular hemorrhage, necrotizing
enterocolitis, and retinopathy of prematurity—the
WHR NICU ranks in the top 1% in the world.
Maternal-Fetal Medicine
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance recently established
the Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, which grew
from a need to care for increasingly complicated
pregnancies and from new technologies that provide
greater opportunity to evaluate and treat problems
involving the baby. Our physicians specialize in the
diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care for expectant
mothers and their unborn babies who are at a high
risk for special health problems.
The Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Center for
Maternal Fetal Medicine provides a full range of
gynecologic reproductive healthcare services from
pre-conception through delivery and recovery.
Our maternal fetal medicine specialists, along with
our highly skilled neonatologists, obstetrician/
gynecologists, geneticists, psychotherapists, and
nutritionists, are able to provide mothers in the
Rio Grande Valley with a comprehensive range of
women’s healthcare services.
Nurse-Family Partnership
The Nurse-Family Partnership at the Women’s
Hospital at Renaissance (NFP-WHR), is the first
extensive home visit and maternal outreach program
in South Texas to bring nurses into the homes of
underprivileged, first-time expectant mothers in
Hidalgo and Willacy counties. The goal of the program
is to improve maternal and child health, prevent
child injuries, child abuse, or maltreatment, reduce
emergency room visits, improve school readiness
and achievement, reduce crime or domestic violence,
and improve family economic self-sufficiency.
The new mom receives regular visits from a
nurse early in her pregnancy and the home visits
continue through her child’s second birthday. The
nurse interprets the mother’s interests and goals to
promote health during pregnancy, proper child care,
and personal growth and development. The NurseFamily Partnership employs six full-time nursehome visitors and currently has 138 clients. Since
inception, the program has seen 238 clients, with 36
program graduates.

Pediatric Cardiothoracic Surgical Partnership
The Rio Grande Valley received its first ever pediatric
cardiothoracic surgical program through Doctors
Hospital at Renaissance’s partnership with University
Health System and UT Medicine.
The UT Medicine pediatric cardiothoracic surgical
team at University Hospital in San Antonio includes
many of the nation’s leading specialists, with patient
outcomes exceeding national benchmarks. University
Hospital is also home to South Texas’ only dedicated
Pediatric and Congenital Heart Unit, so children
and families are cared for by a team with specialized
training and years of experience managing the special
needs of these children and their families. A ribbon cutting ceremony was held at Day Surgery at Renaissance
on September 17, 2015 to mark the grand opening.
Day Surgery at Renaissance Opens Its Doors
In 2015, DHR opened the doors of Day Surgery at
Renaissance, a multi-level facility that is home to
some of the most advanced technology available. The
new Day Surgery at Renaissance allows all outpatient
services—pre-admission testing, labs, imaging,
registration, financial counseling—to be centralized
in one convenient location.
A ceremonial signing was held on September 24, 2015 to mark the partnership.
As part of this partnership, the University Health
System pediatric cardiothoracic team has established
in Edinburg a congenital cardiac fetal clinic in
conjunction with the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
Center for Maternal-Fetal Medicine. In order to fully
meet the needs of these higher risk pregnancies,
both parties are prepared to deliver the most
comprehensive, patient-centered care.
Advanced Level III Trauma
In 2015, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance took another
step toward ensuring the Rio Grande Valley receives
the highest quality of health care available by being
designated as an Advanced Level III Trauma Center
by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
As a Level III Trauma Center, DHR demonstrated its
ability to provide prompt assessment, resuscitation,
surgery, intensive care, and stabilization of injured
patients and emergency operations.

CMS Bed Expansion Approval
In 2015, the federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid
Services approved Doctors Hospital at Renaissance’s
request to expand and increase the number of
total licensed hospital beds, operating rooms, and
procedure rooms from 551 to 1,102. DHR’s request
was granted by demonstrating the rapid population
growth in the county, the high number of inpatient
admissions at DHR under the Medicaid program
compared to other hospitals in the area, and the dire
need for additional patient beds. The expansion to
1,102 beds presents the opportunity to provide new
specialty services, more treatment space, and further
develop a robust education program to train the
healthcare providers of the future.
DHR’s growth and expansion plans include a new
multilevel medical tower that will house intensive
care units dedicated to surgical, cardiovascular,
neurosurgical, and orthopedic patients. The tower
will also include a step-down telemetry unit, medicalsurgical unit, and pediatric and adult burn units.
DHR also plans to add more than 18 new operating
rooms, and expand its emergency room to 80 beds
and include a heliport to sustain a Level I Trauma
Center.
Breast Center of Excellence
The Breast Center at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
received three-year full accreditation from The
National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers
(NAPBC), a program administered by the American
College of Surgeons. As the only accredited breast
center in the Rio Grande Valley, the Breast Center

PARTNERSHIPS AND
AFFILIATIONS:
Paving the way for
medical excellence
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is known for its world-class clinical
expertise, patient-centered care, and cutting-edge technology and
innovation. Since inception, we have remained true to our founding
mission: to provide the best services available for our community and
improve healthcare in South Texas. This has led to our relentless focus
on patient safety and improving quality, which has brought numerous
awards, including the nation’s eminent predictor of quality patient
care: the Hospital Safety Score. Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is
the only hospital in the Rio Grande Valley to receive four consecutive
“A” ratings in the Hospital Safety Score. As illustrated by this award
and others, patients and families can be assured that DHR provides
the highest quality care possible.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance aims to affiliate and
partner with the world’s leaders in the provision of health
services. The Board of Managers at DHR is dedicated
to building an integrated healthcare system focused
on improving quality, efficiency, and patient access, as
well as managing and improving the health of our local
population. They understand that quality healthcare
delivery is achieved through integration and providing

“There are countless attributes that I genuinely believe make the Renaissance
Difference. But, above all else, to me the Renaissance Difference is the firm
belief that once I step through our doors anything that I may dream for my
patients is only a phone call or a meeting away from materializing. What I mean
by this is that for the first time in my career I sincerely believe that anything I
read about, learn about, or conceive myself that may improve the care for my
patients is within reach thanks to the leadership and vision of our administration
and board. Every day I come to work I truly and wholeheartedly believe that we
are advancing the healthcare for the RGV and for Latino Medicine.”

In 2014, DHR announced its affiliation with Cleveland Clinic Bariatric and Metabolic Institute, which gives
DHR access and ability to implement Cleveland Clinic’s best practices, patient and safety initiatives, and clinical
pathways and protocols here at home. Our affiliation with Cleveland Clinic’s Bariatric and Metabolic Institute
brings to the Valley resources, expertise, opportunities, and services that currently don’t exist in this region.
Patients at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance now enjoy greater access to world-class management of obesity and
related diseases, bariatric surgery, clinical trials, treatment protocols and additional research opportunities.

In the Rio Grande Valley, the rates of obesity and diabetes are 1.4 times higher than those reported nationally
for Mexican Americans aged 20 years or older and nearly twice as high as in all Americans (aged 40-59 years).
Even more startling, is an estimated 1 in 3 individuals in the RGV has diabetes. To combat these statistics—and
to battle the area’s historically limited access to innovative treatment options—Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
formed a partnership with Joslin Diabetes Center, the global leader in diabetes research, education, and care.
The Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance offers the latest advances for treating

DHR’s pharmacy and patient care services. The
program also creates an opportunity for additional
community service and public health activities, such
as immunization drives, health screenings, drug
take-back days, and health fairs.
PHARMACY STUDENT ROTATIONS
LATINO MEDICAL STUDENT ASSOCIATION
Over the last several years, Doctors
Hospital at Renaissance has forged
a relationship with the Latino
Medical Student Association
(LMSA), providing an annual
conference for chapter leaders
from across the country. The goal of the conference
is to promote the educational and professional
development of current and future Latino healthcare
professionals. Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
physicians and department leaders strive to educate
these future physicians on issues that affect the
Latino community, as well as work to cultivate and
develop the students’ leadership, organizational, and
advocacy skills.
From their first week at the hospital, pharmacy
students are immersed in an experiential education
program, where they work in various hospital
departments, within a multitude of service lines, and
are able to take advantage of the diverse opportunities
at Doctors Hospital at Renaissance. Rotations
range from the hospital pharmacy and hospital
administration to infectious disease, cardiology,
endocrinology, and pediatrics departments.
Leadership and experience come in the form of
pharmacy preceptors, researchers, and clinical
staff. The pharmacy students are able to take what
they learn and apply it to their coursework in the
classroom. Our program embraces the development
of leadership skills, cultural competency required to
provide patient-centered and population-based care,
and professionalism. Students that rotate through
the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance campus arrive
from the University of Texas, Texas A&M University,
University of Incarnate Word, Texas Tech University,
and Texas Southern University.
UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON
Doctors Hospital at

INNOVATION,
RESEARCH, AND
EDUCATION:
Constantly pursuing new
discoveries in healthcare
At Doctors Hospital at Renaissance, the pursuit of excellence in
healthcare is in constant progression. We understand that it requires
the collective commitment to exceeding the expectations of our
patients and their families. Our physicians and nursing staff are
dedicated to delivering transformative medicine and compassionate
patient care. We have a strong foundation of excellence on which to
build as we pursue methods for delivering quality, affordable care for
our patients, train the next generation of healthcare professionals,
advance innovation in research, and ultimately improve the health of
the communities we serve.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is dedicated to
ensuring that our patients are able to access and
receive the best care possible.

“Now that we have easy access to incredible amounts of information, I try to share
with our residents that today’s physicians need to be sophisticated consumers
of data. While it remains important that we all have a solid knowledge base, we
need to also ensure we are constantly updating what we know. I strive to teach
our residents how to be critical thinkers and how to judge the information they
encounter. We not only need to be able to determine how new information may
be applied to our practice but also how to interpret new findings and explain
them in a way that our patients will understand.”
GRADUATE MEDICAL EDUCATION
The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance are both leading the
way to improve our economy through health care. We
are looking forward to seeing our community grow
and are grateful to be a part of the process through
the establishment of a robust and extensive graduate
medical education program in the RGV.
In late 2012, The Federal Government and the Centers
for Medicare and Medicaid Services approved the
1115 Healthcare Transformation Waiver, which
made it possible for Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
to develop a residency training program that works
hand-in-hand with the newly formed University of
Texas Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine. Over
the past 3 years, DHR has financially invested in
the development of a graduate medical education
program and saw its first class of residents in July
2015.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance is one of the primary
teaching hospitals for the University of Texas Rio
Grande Valley School of Medicine. Initially, four
residency programs were launched on July 1, 2015—
internal medicine, obstetrics and gynecology, general
surgery, and family medicine. DHR is exploring
the creation of additional residency programs in
pediatrics, podiatry, anesthesia, emergency medicine,
urology, orthopedics, radiology, and pathology.
Each of these new residency programs will produce
board-eligible physicians who are excellent clinicians
capable and ready to enter into a independent
medical practice in our community. The residency
programs will not only provide further educational
opportunities for physicians, but they will improve
the accessibility of health care in our community.
Starting with the 26 residents that started in 2015, it
is projected that in 10 years, through the continued
growth of graduate medical education programs,
more than 375 new physicians will be providing care
in the Rio Grande Valley. The need for a residency
program and medical school in the RGV is clear:
with a population of nearly 1.3 million, there are only
110 doctors per 100,000 people – half of the national
rate and well below the Texas average.
In addition to the graduate medical education
program, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance supports a
wide variety of educational initiatives and programs
in the Rio Grande Valley. We hold 62 program
licensing agreements, including agreements with
local high schools, technical colleges, and vocational
schools. On any given day, we have up to 250 students
working on our campus.

DUAL ENROLLMENT NURSING PROGRAM
HESTEC
In early 2015, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance
announced the historic Associate Degree in Nursing
Dual Enrollment Pilot Program, which was formed
in collaboration with Pharr-San Juan-Alamo
Independent School District (PSJA ISD), South
Texas College, Region One Education Service Center
(Region One), and South Texas Independent School
District (South Texas ISD). This collaborative pilot
program will provide students with a pathway into
health professions in an unprecedented way.
As one of the largest educational symposiums in
the Rio Grande Valley, the Hispanic Engineering,
Science, and Technology (HESTEC) week hosted
by University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV)
draws over 5,300 students and educators annually
to discuss, discover, and promote careers in science,
technology, engineering and math (STEM). The
RGV has identified itself as a major contributor
to the advancement of STEM fields through
the establishment of progressive scientific and
technological programs such as Space X, the UTRGV
School of Medicine, and the expansion of graduate
medical education and clinical research at Doctors
Hospital at Renaissance.
The dual enrollment program allows for expanded
educational opportunities while also addressing the
healthcare needs of our region by working to alleviate
the nursing shortage that challenges local healthcare
providers.
Founded in South Texas, DHR is dedicated to the
cultivation of this region and the members that
serve it. Development of the STEM fields assists
in the production of new professional careers,
including those in the medical profession. Financial
contributions on behalf of Doctors Hospital at
Renaissance have allowed UTRGV to secure the
resources required to develop a movement that
inspires the youth of tomorrow. Over the past
several years, DHR physicians and ancillary staff
have invested a profuse amount of time to ensure
students of all ages are educated on the array of STEM
professions that are available to them.
Beginning in the Spring semester of 2016, the
inaugural class of 16 students will begin the Nursing
Dual Enrollment Pilot Program. These students had
to meet pre-requisite course requirements, which
included Introduction to Nursing, and take the
Health Education System Incorporated Admission
Assessment exams. Upon completion of the program,
at the time of high school graduation, the nursing
students will have accumulated the required amount
of credits to receive an associate degree in nursing
from South Texas College.
Throughout the week, HESTEC invites professionals
in the community to share their experiences and
provide advice to visiting students. A multitude
of DHR physicians have been born and raised in
the Rio Grande Valley and are honored to be part
of an experience that truly moves students. These
physicians have sat on panels with fellow community
leaders to explain the impact of STEM professions
and how these children can follow their dreams and
truly make a difference in their community. Our
physicians are more than happy to spend their time
with these students, for they know these young adults
have the power to change the future of South Texas.

MEDICAL
RESEARCH
According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA),
Hispanics make up 17% of the total U.S. population
yet only represent 1% of clinical trial participants.
Scientific research has proven that there are significant
differences in drug response, drug disposition, and
drug efficacy among various ethnic groups, including
the Hispanic population. Moreover, there is a higher
incidence of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease,
stroke, infectious diseases, and different types of cancer
among minorities. Since research has demonstrated
that biological differences can influence how people
respond to medicines, the process used to test the safety
and effectiveness of potential new treatments should
accurately take into account the patient populations
that will eventually use them.
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance recognized
that an industry-wide, collaborative effort was
needed to increase participation in clinical trials in
underrepresented populations, thus forming the
Research Institute at Renaissance in 2014. Through
the Research Institute at Renaissance our goal is
to encourage greater participation in clinical trials
among underrepresented patient populations such as
Hispanics as well as to expand investigator-initiated
research within our community. To date, we have
successfully enrolled over 500 patients in clinical
research studies across various therapeutic areas.

Diabetes
Diabetes is among the top causes of mortality in our
community; and the associated secondary effects
of diabetes are most detrimental. Through the
Joslin Diabetes Center Affiliate at Doctors Hospital
at Renaissance, we have initiated clinical trials for
adults and children with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes,
providing close to 200 patients with access to the most
advanced form of therapy for diabetes treatment and
very close monitoring and follow-up by the physicians
conducting the clinical trial in order to best manage
the disease.
Collaborative projects with the Joslin Diabetes Center
have allowed the Research Institute at Renaissance to
formulate very strong partnerships with organizations
such as the Verizon Foundation, which is helping to
leverage mobile technology in the self-management
of diabetes among the Latino population. With
significant medical advances and interventional efforts
in the treatment of Diabetes, we are already seeing
the impact of this study. Patients are provided with
mobile technology (cell phones) and meet ‘virtually’,
with Diabetes educators to discuss their progress
from the comfort of their own home. We have seen
the profound impact this study is having as one of
our patients has been able to reduce and maintain her
blood glucose levels in a matter of weeks for the first
time in her life!
Cardiovascular Disease
Cardiovascular disease is a disease that rivals diabetes
in mortality and severity in our community. The
Research Institute at Renaissance was selected to
participate in a multi-center, nation-wide clinical trial
that will test the efficacy of a new class of compounds
known as PCSK9 inhibitors that are proving to be
most effective in reducing abnormally high levels of
cholesterol and reducing the consequences of this
disease.
Women’s Health and Neonatology
Our research portfolio has also grown to include
studies that focus on Women’s Health and Neonatal
screening studies, both in collaboration with toptiered academic institutions including The University
of Texas at Austin and Texas Children’s Hospital
respectively. We have enrolled 300 women in a postpartum contraception study to assess the effects
of changes in legislative mandates and access to
preferred methods of contraception.
The neonatology study, in collaboration with Texas
Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas, has allowed
us to screen over 7,000 newborn babies for elevated
levels of bilirubin, which, if not properly followed, may
lead to detrimental Biliary Atresia and downstream
liver transplants. We have also been selected for a
multi-center industry-sponsored study to determine
differences in milk-fortifiers in pre-term infants.
Oncology
Our affiliations with the Cancer Therapy Research
Center, an NCI-designated Cancer Center in San
Antonio, and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston
will allow our team of physician-scientists and
medical oncologists to participate in and be the
pioneers of Precision Medicine in the Rio Grande
Valley. Our goal is to identify the genomic and genetic
changes that may be enriched in our population that
is driving catastrophic diseases such as breast cancer,
liver cancer and pediatric cancers that afflict our
community.
options. Presently, South Texans are extremely limited
in their ability to access innovative treatments due to
a lack of leading research centers in our area. Through
the creation of the Research Institute at Renaissance,
and collaborations with national research firms, all
local residents will gain access to life-saving trial
programs.

Campus Map:
Building the future today
Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Health System
has experienced tremendous growth over the past
year, the most visible of which is evidence by the
many new facilities that have been constructed. The
development of new buildings has provided the
opportunity to expand service lines, and ultimately,
increase access and treat more patients.
What do you think is the most remarkable
thing about DHR?
Martin Garza, M.D.
Pediatrics
DHR Chief of Staff
“What I’ve come to learn about DHR is that it has a solid commitment to
the community. Over and over, I have heard the saying, “if it’s good for the
community, then it’s good for DHR.” In every decision made at DHR, South
Texas is well represented. In every activity, need or desire, the community
comes first. We are from this community, with this community, and for this
community.”
DHR is dedicated to not only providing healthcare services, but further developing our community to facilitate
a better quality of life in the Rio Grande Valley. Through the progressive growth of our campus, new jobs are
created for members of our community during the time of construction, and when the facilities open.
In 2015, Doctors Hospital at Renaissance Health System added four new buildings to its continuously
growing campus. Renaissance Gastroenterology, Day Surgery at Renaissance, The Village at Renaissance, and
the Doctors Hospital at Renaissance – University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Family Medicine Center all
opened their doors with the mission to increase access to primary and specialty health care in South Texas.
Construction also commenced in 2015 on the Neuroscience Institute at Renaissance, as a multi-level addition
to the main hospital.
