The Felice Brothers return with nine songs in their unique blend of folk, country,
rock and soul. Uncut magazine has described the band as, "just glorious".
Life in the Dark was recorded in the garage on a farm in upstate New York, with no
distractions and no outside influences.
So, it's not surprising the band produced the album themselves. Highlights include,
"Aerosol Ball," and "Plunder." The Felice Brothers will be playing select shows and festivals
throughout the spring and summer, with a US Tour scheduled for the fall and UK/EU dates
in the winter.
The Felice Brothers got their start as a band playing in the New York City subway. They
stayed in a little apartment in Brooklyn and would play in the subway stations at 42nd
Street and Union Square and in Greenwich Village. The three brothers originally hail
from Palenville, New York in the Catskill Mountains.
The band has five main members: Ian and James Felice, their friend Josh "Christmas
Clapton" Rawson, previously a traveling dice player, fiddle player Greg Farley and
drummer David Estabrook. Ian is the main vocalist and plays the guitar and piano. James
contributes vocals and plays the accordion, organ, and piano. Christmas plays the bass
guitar.

When Matt Hitt says Drowners' second album was "written with a lot of uncertainty and
darkness," it's easy to ask one simple question: Really? After all, the hooks careening
across 'On Desire' hit as hard as their debut, a DIY record that earned Drowners a cult
following on the road alongside Cage the Elephant, Foals and Arctic Monkeys. If
anything, the New York band - helmed by Hitt and rounded out by guitarist Jack Ridley,
bassist Erik Snyder, and drummer/multi-instrumentalist Daniel Jacobs - is as bold and
brash as ever.
Lurking a few levels beneath the group's tightly wound post-punk tracks are bittersweet
minor-key melodies that burn like the red light of a setting sun. The honeymoon period is
over, in other words, with the rose-coloured rush of living in a new city - Hitt is Welsh and
lived in London before moving to the USA five years ago - replaced by lingering pangs of
paranoia, anxiety and doubt.
One in the decades-old tradition of Joy Division, Echo & The Bunnymen and early Cure,
mind you, music that is caustic and catchy. That goes for everything from the call-andresponse chords of 'Conversations With Myself' and pressure-cooked choruses of 'Cruel
Ways' to the mangled drum machines, muffled synths and lean Kraut loop of 'Trust the
Tension.' Songs as insistent as 'Someone Else Is Getting In' and 'Another Go' also sound
like they are about to boil over, finding strength in the final stages of a flat-lining
relationship - down, but certainly not out.
Unlike the introspective songs Hitt wrote for their self-titled debut, 'On Desire' is more of a
group effort, a full-on collaboration from its demo stages at an upstate cabin to sleepless
recording sessions at several NYC studios (including Electric Lady and The Bunker) with
producer Claudius Mittendorfer.

The pet project of Texas based programmer John Mark Lapham, - of The Earlies and 4AD
band The Late Cord fame - Old Fire joins a world-class roster that includes the likes of
Steven Wilson, The Pineapple Thief, Anathema, Nordic Giants and The Anchoress .
Taking nearly a decade to make, Songs From The Haunted South has been
a labour of love for Lapham.
Born from an album concept for a 4AD project with singer Micah P. Hinson (The Late
Cord), the album was originally intended to feature different singers and musicians
recording songs that were both covers and originals. After parting ways with Micah,
Lapham remained determined to realize his vision for the album and sought voices he
considered special or fitted the inspiration.
The first piece of the puzzle fell in to place after meeting the former owner of 4AD, Ivo
Watts Russell, who introduced Lapham to singer/songwriter, Tom Rapp - who recorded a
string of haunting albums in the late 60s and 70s under the name Pearls Before Swine.
The vocals Rapp provided formed the basis of the track Shadows. In the following years,
guest vocals were recorded by Sara Lowes (The Earlies), DM Stith, Christopher Barnes
(Gem Club), Rebekka Karijord, and Alex Maas (Black Angels).
The project also features a myriad of exceptional musicians including Warren Defever (His
Name Is Alive) - Guitar, Thor Harris (Swans) - Drums, Christian Madden - Rhodes piano &
Organ and Semay Wu (Cello).
The 13 track album contains a selection of songs that in one way or another are
dedications to people, some dead and some still living. Musically, inspirations range from
ambient artists such as Brian Eno and Stars of the Lid to Psychedelic Rock, traditional
Country and early 4AD.
Sitting alongside the original Old Fire compositions are a selection of intriguing cover
versions. Lapham uniquely interprets songs by Psychic TV ( The Orchids), Low (Laser
Beam), Ian William Craig (A Sight Grip, A Gentle Hold), Jason Molina (It's Easier Now),
Camberwell Now (Know How) and Shearwater (Helix).
Songs From The Haunted South' was produced by John Mark Lapham, mixed by JM
Lapham and Mark Kuykendall, and was mastered by Ian Hawgood.
The powerful cover art was designed by UK's Grammy Award winning designer Vaughan
Oliver, famed for his work with artists such as Mojave 3, Lush, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can
Dance, The Breeders, This Mortal Coil, Pixies, Throwing Muses in addition to artists such as
David Sylvian and Bush. The cover shot taken in 1958 features Lapham's father during
bivouac camping basic training in the foothills of the Ozarks, at Fort Chaffee.

Eggs Over Easy, the American band that invented pub rock, influenced the careers of
Nick Lowe, Huey Lewis, Loudon Wainwright III and Elvis Costello, and laid the
groundwork for a grass-roots movement that would spawn UK punk, is finally getting its
due with a deluxe 2xCD/3xLP (released 5th August) set.
With roots stretching back to late 1960s Berkeley, CA, the three principals in the Eggs
songwriters Jack O'Hara, Austin de Lone, and Brien Hopkin's would by early 1971 find
themselves ensconced in London's Olympic Studios, lured by Animals bassist and Jimi
Hendrix producer/manager Chas Chandler, and an apparitional record deal. When said
deal went bust the Eggs did what any American band would do, Stiff Records co-founder
Dave Robinson told a journalist. They went to the nearest bar and said, "Give us your
worst night".
Which is how Eggs Over Easy leapt onto the pages of pop music history. Their humble
Monday night gigs at a former jazz club called the Tally Ho' Pub rock ground zero - would
become the hub for a network of artists, venues, and music business machers that
included back-to-basics groups Ducks Deluxe, Bees Make Honey and Dr. Feelgood, DJ's
John Peel and Charlie Gillett, and hustlers like Jake Riviera and Mr. Robinson.
For the first time ever, the entire Eggs Over Easy catalogue, lovingly remastered and
restored, is available as a deluxe set. Included in this collection is their debut album Good
'n' Cheap, produced by Link Wray and originally released on A&M Records in 1972, their
rarely-heard second LP, Fear of Frying, originally (if barely) released on Lee Michael's
Squish Records in 1980, two songs from the band's lone single released on Buffalo
Records, and the previously unreleased London sessions produced by Chandler.
The 2xCD package includes a 24-page booklet with extremely rare photos, show flyers,
early press clippings, musician and writer credits, plus the definitive story of the band by
acclaimed music writer Gene Sculatti, who called Good 'n' Cheap a near-masterpiece
when he reviewed it for Creem Magazine in 1972.

"Promises I Should Have Kept" is the debut album from modern Mariachi outfit Roja.
The album is released through legendary North West label Probe Plus,
longtime favourite of John Peel as well as home of longstanding folk luminaries
Half Man Half Biscuit.
Formed from the members of long-lost alt-rockers Marlowe, (a total of eight musicians,
with five of them core members and the others guesting on the album) the distinctive
vocal and dry lyricism of frontman Simon Bradshaw is set against an altogether more
grandiose backdrop.
Departing from the very British post-grunge sound of their previous group, Roja venture
far across the ocean to the endless horizons and desert landscapes of Ennio Morricone
and Mariachi El Bronx. Soaked in the spirit of Spaghetti Western soundtracks and the
more recent homages of one Quentin Tarantino, triumphant brass, sweeping strings and
flamenco acoustic guitars form the richly evocative tapestry of their magnum opus,
Promises I Should Have Kept.
Lyrically, however, it is befitting of the album's often sinister tone, depicting a liaison in a
bar where a seduction takes place. In 'Oh L'amour (Part Two)' the revelation is that the
female character's husband is waiting outside ready to dispatch with his wife's naive
suitor. By no means the idyllic post-nuptial scene one would expect!

When a band spends a decade on the DIY circuit, playing an unrelenting barrage of shows in
basements, backyards, and bars, it's not unusual for its members to hit a wall. It's a familiar
story - burnout grabs hold, cracking the group's foundation and leading to disbandment.

Plastic House on Base of Sky is Kayo Dot's 7th full -length since the bands inception in 2003 On
Kayo Dot's newest full length, Plastic House on Base of Sky, the band continues to embrace the
electronic allusions found on their previous effort Coffins on Io.
Plastic House on Base of Sky incorporates a variety of synthesizers (many of them vintage analog)
to create another work of ambition and magnitude that fuses the explosive musical imagination
of a band like Magma with the forward -thinking experimentalism of Conrad Schnitzler or
Morton Subotnick.
This latest effort, a 40 minute -long, 5- song LP replaces the future noir theme of Coffins on Io
with an innovative, complex, and biomechanical work of art. Think seemingly impossible
architecture, dead satellites, trashed space stations, wasted old lady heroin addicts hanging out
by cheap motel pools, broken people, and a hopeless dead and polluted world transitioning into
artifice and mechanism and reacting by being self- destructive, either to the point of utter
obliteration or a glorious transhuman condition.
Toby Driver, the primary composer and bandleader of Kayo Dot, has been fiercely productive
over the years, and while that usually refers to how many songs or albums an artist has made,
with Driver the productivity is in the realm of ideas as much as music itself. For as much ground as
they cover, it's always in the service of a carefully curated mood and this is apparent on Plastic
House on Base of Sky's exploration of our mechanical post-human future-present.

Mikey Erg has played on a lot of records. He has also toured extensively for the better part
of two decades in literally countless bands It's possible that not even Mikey himself could
come close to listing them all. To start with, there is of course the band from which he gets
his namesake: The Ergs!, New Brunswick, NJ basements' favorite sons, in which Mikey
played drums, sang and was principle songwriter.
Comedian and fellow Don Giovanni Records alum Chris Gethard pegged Mikey to play drums
in the house band for his weirdo, fringe late night TV show, The Chris Gethard Show. Since
the disbanding of The Ergs!, Mikey has fostered a solo project that has kept him super busy
performing all over the world. The album was produced by Jeff Rosenstock who last year,

For a musician with as many notches in his belt as Mikey Erg, it can be difficult to determine
the impact of, and weigh the meaning behind each particular release. But Tentative

Alice Bag is a singer/songwriter, musician, author, artist, educator and feminist. Alice was the
lead singer and co-founder of the Bags, one of the first punk bands to form during the first
wave of punk rock in Los Angeles. The Bags are considered one of the key bands of the early
Hollywood punk scene that centered around the Masque in 1977-78.
Alice went on to perform in other ground-breaking bands, including Castration Squad, Cholita,
and Las Tres. She has published two books, including the critically acclaimed memoir Violence Girl
in 2011 and the 2015 self-published Pipe Bomb For the Soul, based on her teaching experiences in
post-revolutionary 1980's Nicaragua. Alice's influence on popular music is highlighted in the
Smithsonian exhibit, American Sabor.
Alice's self-titled debut solo album will be released on June 24th, 2016 on Don Giovanni Records.

Composed and arranged by Rob Mazurek, Alien Flower Sutra is the apogee of a collaborative
conceptual process that bloomed over multiple years, voices and instrumentations. After
planting seeds at home with pen, piano and cornet in hand, Mazurek took to various
performance spaces in Chicago and São Paulo across 2013 and 2014 to open his compositions to
interpretation by a potent pool of creative musicians.
Among them was guitarist Emmett Kelly (The Cairo Gang, Joshua Abrams Natural Information
Society), whose interchanges with Mazurek led the two to conversations about an accompanying
storyline for the music. Responding to post-apocalyptic and science-fictional imageries long
central to Mazurek's aesthetic (as themed by his Exploding Star Orchestra, Pulsar Quartet, and
Black Cube SP), Kelly took to writing lyrics within the framework of the existing melodies.
Meditating on not-too-futuristic concepts common to the collective conscience of our time, the
final script finds optimism over paranoia in the advancing state of human evolution. Though part
of Mazurek's early vision was to develop this work into a full-scale opera, he found inspiration in
the intimate voice/guitar recordings Kelly made remotely, and chose instead to experiment with
those minimal tracks alongside recordings from Sâo Paulo's El Rocha Studios he'd been
maturating in his modular synthesizers.
Alien Flower Sutra as finalized for this release is an animate palette of poetry and electronic
treatments conducted by Mazurek and articulated by the candor of Kelly's aching narratives.

Hailing from Denver, The Baltic are a revolutionary dream rock band characterized by their
vibrant tonalities, psychedelic riffs, and euphoric harmonies. The four-piece group consists of

Kaplan. The band started in Epstein's basement in the sixth grade, and is now opening for

Chemistry. You either got it or you don't. When the five members of Royal Southern
Brotherhood convened in February at Dockside Studios, Louisiana, there was magic in
the air. Just seven days later, the acclaimed US soul-blues collective emerged triumphant
with The Royal Gospel: the fourth album in their rocket-heeled rise and further proof of
a lineup born to play together.
Like all the best groups, Royal Southern Brotherhood have evolved. Having bonded on
2015's Don't Look Back, the MkII lineup of Cyril Neville (percussion/vocals), Bart Walker
(guitar/vocals), Tyrone Vaughan (guitar/vocals) and Yonrico Scott (drums) have found
another gear on The Royal Gospel, bolstered by new recruit Darrell Phillips (bass/vocals),
plus guest B3 from Norman Caesar. "As far as the men making the music and playing the
songs," says Neville, "the mission of the band has never changed".

Scan the credits for The Royal Gospel and you'll recognise that while some bands operate
a songwriting dictatorship, this one thrives on material penned in partnership (or even
originated between three members). Neville is as prolific as you'd expect - given the fistful
of projects he's kept spinning over the decades - but so too are Walker and Vaughan, who
collaborated remotely with their bandleader, trading ideas back-and-forth via the Web.
"It's not often that you find a connection like me and Cyril," explains Walker.
Then the band and famed producer David Z arrived at Dockside, the recording ethos was
unapologetically old-school. Simply cut the songs live in the room, eyeball-to-eyeball, in a
minimum of takes. "We walked in not really knowing what we were gonna do," recalls
Phillips. "Cyril and Bart come to us with chord progressions, tempos and ideas, and we
build together. We'd just fall right into the thing and all of a sudden, there's the song. On
this record, we came together as a band. It was a magical thing to witness."
Likewise, it's a magical album to hear. The Royal Gospel opens in emphatic style with
"Where There's Smoke There's Fire": a stinging statement of intent co-written by Neville
and Vaughan, whose hard-rock riffing is tempered by a vocal addressing a woman with
"the face of an angel, a body that's divine". Fans of the Brotherhood's bluesier side will
relish the rolling rhythms of "Spirit Man", and hit repeat for "I'm Comin' Home", with its
molten slide-guitar solo and travelogue lyric ("The road just goes on and on").

This collection includes the A and B side of every single by these two blues giants, through to 1962 with
Buddy Guy's hit "Stone Crazy" and the very different sound and feeling of Magic Sam's "All Your Love", this

The blues in Chicago and indeed the blues on Chess Records, Chicago's top blues label, had by the late 1950s
been dominated by just a handful of artists but by 1957 that would change as a new generation of blues men
were getting a foothold on the scene. This superb CD from Jasmine concentrates on two of these young
bloods, Buddy Guy and Magic Sam.
These cuts set a new course for the blues at a time when the music was losing its core audience. Buddy Guy is
today the elder statesman of the blues around the world and if it not for Magic Sam's tragic death at the very
young age of 32 he would no doubt carry the same status.

This collection covers less than five years of Allen Toussaint's remarkable career, beginning with his first
solo recordings in 1958 under the name Al Tousan and includes his 1958 album 'The Wild Sound of New
Orleans Piano', whilst tracks 21-32 concentrate on his work as a session musician.
The death of Allen Toussaint on November 15th 2015 probably brings to a close the greatest period of musical
history in New Orleans. For over 50 years he produced, played on and wrote the greatest volume of classic
R&B you could imagine.
Professor Longhair was one of New Orleans most influential pianists of the era and certainly the most
important influence on Allen Toussaint. Listen to the opening track "Whirlaway" and its B side "Happy Times"
and you won't fail to hear Professor Longhair's influence.

Presented here are the A & B sides of every release the blues singer and songwriter Rosco
Gordon made up to 1961, major hits include "Booted", "No More Doggin'", "Saddle The Cow"
plus great tracks such as "Just A Little Bit".
Shambolic - not a word often used to describe musicians, their recordings or their careers but in
the case of Rosco Gordon it seems to fit. Certainly his piano stylings are often referred to as
shambolic, however his looping piano style and his ability to place the accent on the offbeat
helped to form the foundation of bluebeat and ska in Jamaica.
This is the first time his exciting recordings have been presented in this way. An undeniably
original talent whose contributions to the development of popular music cannot be
underestimated and this collection fully demonstrates that.

Clarence 'Frogman' Henry has always been a favourite of New Orleans R&B collectors and
unlike many of the artists who emanated from that city's vibrant and unique music scene,
Clarence managed to break out of Louisiana and score a significant number of pop crossover
hits. Contains the hits "Ain't Got No Home", "(I Don't Know Why I Love You) But I Do", "You
Always Hurt The One You Love".
Today at the age of 79, Clarence lives comfortably in New Orleans performing on occasion,
usually at the annual New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival secure in the knowledge the body of
work featured on this CD is amongst the greatest to come out of New Orleans.

Mor Karbasi releases her first album since 2013 with special guests Richard Bona, Kai
Eckhardt and The Tomatito Family.
'Ojos De Novia' (Eyes of the Bride) is a thirteen track album of all new songs with a
strong Berber influence. Mor's Moroccan, Persian and Moorish descent come to the fore
in a set of songs about love and tragedy, set in her rich Sephardi family background.
Universal recording star Richard Bona brings a remarkable performance to "Haykem Juar"
while long time collaborator Kai Eckhardt, a previous Mclaughlin Trio stalwart, lends his
distinctive sound to both "Idijen" and title + video track "Ojos De Novia". The Tomatito
family jointly contribute a deep flamenco feeling to Susona with an amazing solo from Jose
Israel Torres.
Mor's voice is of course centre stage, once more bringing the qualities that Robin
Denselow (The Guardian) called " remarkable -mixing delicacy, power and control as she
moves between rousing, harsh-edged songs and the spine-tingling subtlety of a quieter
piece".
But now, we find a more mature Karbasi, recalling her thrilling debut "The Beauty and the
Sea" with her multi instrumentalist and arranger wunderkind partner Joe Taylor, who
brings guitar, trumpet, sax and toy piano to embellish the performances of songs that hail
from her roots in Morocco, Spain and Persia with the continuing involvement of Shoshana
Karbasi's lyrical skills.
Karbasi has strong recognition on the Touring circuit with previous appearances in UK at
South Bank, St Lukes/Barbican, Salisbury Cathedral, in France at Café De Danse, Lyon
Opera House and many International Festivals like WOMAD, Chicago WMF and FMM
Sines.
Mor is supporting the album release with 10 quartet dates (including Kai Eckhardt) in
France, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Holland and Italy between May 20 and June 1 with
Autumn dates planned in UK, France and Spain.

People Rock Outfit (P.R.O.) were a garage-rock band formed in 1974 from the ashes of
The Hygrades one of Eastern Nigeria's hottest psych-funk-rock outfits of the early 1970s.
This, their only album, was recorded in 1976 and originally released in only very small
numbers on the EMI Nigeria label.
Strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide in heavyweight paste-on sleeves and 180g vinyl.
Assembled by drummer Stoneface Iwuagwu and bassist Drago Uboma after the dissolution of
their respective Life Everlasting and Speed Limit groups, Hygrades guitarist and producer Goddy
Oku assisted behind the scenes but was replaced on the bandstand by Justus "Jay-U" Nnakwe.
With the addition of former Celestine Ukwu and Segun Bucknor guitarist Olugu Abai, P.R.O.
notched a major milestone backing Jamaican superstar Jimmy Cliff during his 1974 tour of
Nigeria, but the group turned out to be even shorter lived than the Hygrades with the band going
their separate ways - with only Jay-U staying active in the music scene with his subsequent
Enough is Enough album (to be re-released soon by Soundway).
This album is typical of mid-70s Eastern Nigerian rock: rasping vocals, prominent pounding drums
and blistering fuzz guitar (and check those drum breaks on Movement). Raw and wild and far
from perfect in places it's a snapshot of youthful band just having a good time that will appeal to
fans of Question Mark, S-job, Ofege, The Apostles and Ofo. Having never even appeared for sale
on the internet this is an album that desperately deserved a re-issue just to keep it from disappearing forever.

Ghanaian Afro funk and Boogie from Sidiku Buari is the focus of the next Soundway 12".
On the A side a classic Ghana style afro funk cut recorded at Ghana Film Studios has a
characteristic Lo-Fi sound led by George Amissah's (Ebo Taylor, K. Frimpong, Uhuru Dance
Band) trademark sax over a squelchy synth and drum groove.
This is backed on the flip by a boogie funk cut (Music) recorded in NYC in the early 80s with Fanti
chants and soulful vocals from the big man himself. 'Alhaji' Sidiku Buari gained fame in the 70s in
Ghana and the USA after moving to New York and recording an album (which featured the souljazz legend Bernard Purdie) for RCA that was one of the first mainstream afro-funk LPs ever to hit
the market in the USA.
After two subsequent albums that produced some afro disco classics including the seminal "I'm
Ready" he eventually returned to Ghana where he became the chairman of the Ghanaian
Copyright Society (COSGA).
The two tracks are taken from an obscure 12" release from 1983 that unfortunately had a
pressing defect on "Anokwar", so with some twiddling and editing Hide & Smile have restored it
ready for some overdue dance-floor use once again.

This crate digging Rough Guide brings to light forgotten gems and golden grooves of tropical
Peru. It’s a classic retro album full of hidden gems and never-heard before jams including
sought-after and rare tracks from one of South America's best kept musical secrets. Compiled
by the renowned Latin music DJ and expert Pablo Yglesias aka DJ Bongohead
Home-grown ingredients in the form of dances, melodies, and instrumentation from the array of
Peru's indigenous peoples (such as the huayno) as well as African and Spanish-influenced música
criolla, Spanish flamenco and Brazilian carimbó, samba and baião all swirled together in the
melting pot with imported tropical Afro-Caribbean or North American/European pop sounds to
create an ambiance as competitive, creative, sophisticated and diverse as anywhere else at the

Though Peruvian musicians have made almost exact copies of popular foreign tunes, several
'standards' of tropical music originally come from Peruvian authors and performers, though a

famous by Rubén Blades and Celia Cruz respectively) to 'Macondo' (inspired by García Márquez's
100 Years of Solitude and covered countless times internationally) and 'Colegiala' (a mega-smash
for Colombia's Rodolfo y su Típica but originally by Walter León's Los Ilusionistas), Peru has
supplied hits for the world of salsa and cumbia time and time again. Several recent collections
have featured the originals, and here for example we present the song that launched a hundred
iterations, Johnny Arce's 'Macondo'.

the expansion of the Ottoman Empire into the Balkans in the sixteenth century and moved north
into Hungary along the river Danube. Most of the South Slav settlements are next to the river in
towns like Mohács, Ráckeve, Pomaz - and Szentendre, where the Söndörg boys grew up.
Tamburocket is Söndörg's second international release and features tunes collected by the
composer Béla Bartók (1881-1945) and the leading Hungarian ethnographer of South Slav music
Tihamér Vujicsics (1929-1975).

Latin America heads up nine of the tracks on this collection. The 1960s and 1970s were typified by
activist rebellion and bands of the day communicated their passion with heavy reverb and re-imagined

Flores'. Colombian dance style cumbia was also adopted by vintage psychedelic troubadours Juaneco Y

Skipping across the Atlantic we land in Africa. The 1960s and 1970s here were defined by clashing

During the 1970s drug culture wasn't flooding India's shores but the country was undergoing its own
social transformation and a DIY garage band scene evolved. Ananda Shankar's 'Dancing Drums' is a
cult classic from this era. Cambodia also had a rich scene, but the psychedelic archive was almost
eradicated during the time of the Khmer Rouge. The sounds live on via legendary balladeer Ros

Originally from Cameroon, Bona remains true to his roots on 'Heritage', his eighth album

On his Concord debut, trumpeter Marquis Hill presents his own late modern spin on Jazz
standards, capturing the essence of this rich oral tradition but with a post-modern and
authentically African approach.
He hopes to produce a real 'standards record' but, freshly, with his regular ensemble, the
"BlackTet" which consists of Christopher McBride on alto sax, Justin Thomas on vibes,
Makaya McCraven on drums and Joshua Ramos on bass. Special guests include Christie
Dashiell, Vincent Gardner, Harold Green III and Juan Pastor.
The Way We Play is hardly a colour by numbers jazz standards album. As Hill has done
on his previous discs, he revitalizes the material by placing heavier emphasis on the
groove, which enables the compositions to resonate more to a 21st -century jazz
audience – hence the disc’s witty title. “I really want to make it very clear that this is
the sound of my band, which is uniquely Chicago. I wanted to put everything on the
table – this is the way that we play,” Hill explains.
The Chicago Tribune asserts that the spirit of Chicago is deeply integral to his music by
stating, “…his music crystallizes the hard-hitting, hard-swinging spirit of Chicago jazz.”
Indeed, Chi-town references burst forward at the very beginning with “Welcome /
‘Bulls Theme’,” on which guest vocalist Meagan McNeal introduces the band with the
same hypnotic theme used by the Chicago Bulls in the 1990s when Michael Jordan
played with the team.
The Chicago connection between Hill and the material becomes even more pronounced
with the delightful cover of “Maiden Voyage,” a mid-1960s standard, written by fellow
Windy City-native Herbie Hancock. On Hill’s version, he slowed the tempo and dropped
the key to G-flat to give the evocative composition darker hues.
After bursting through a flinty exploration through the Thelonious Monk mid-1960s staple
“Straight No Chaser,” Hill digs deep into the post-bop canon and unearths Carmell Jones’
rare 1965 tune, “Beep Durple,” on which the frontline horns deftly tackle the tricky
melody atop a fractured yet forward motion rhythmic bed. The ebullient rendition also
features trombonist and fellow-Chicagoan Vincent Gardner of the Jazz at Lincoln Center
Orchestra.
Hill was the winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition.

Best known as a multi-instrumental member of Tortoise and a pillar of the Chicago jazz and
experimental music scene, Jeff Parker has been incomparably prolific over the last 20+ years
while merely producing 5 albums as a lead artist; (just 2 since 2005).
"Lead artist" is in quotes here, because though his name is seldom seen in marquees, his
distinctive guitar sound has been essential to every project he's been part of. It was in that sense
that we at International Anthem came to work with Parker during the production of Makaya
McCraven's "In The Moment", an album which ultimately showcased said essentialness (of
Parker's side man sound) on 9 of its 19 tracks.
Parker had long been in silent study of vinyl sampling and beat conduction, but perhaps it's no
coincidence that new L.A. residence in a city a-flame with experimental R&B, jazz and electronic
fusers ( e.g. Brainfeeder, Leaving Records, Low End Theory) spurred him to dig back in to the
practice and produce with more purpose. By early 2015 Parker had refined several compositional
ideas around his samples, and enlisted local friend Paul Bryan (Aimee Mann, Meshell
Ndegeocello) to engineer and play bass guitar in sessions with Chicago ex-pat saxophonist,
Thelonious Monk Institute protégé Josh Johnson (Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Esperanza Spaulding)
and drummer Jamire Williams (Robert Glasper, Carlos Niño).
The recordings were conducted to capture composed passages as well as free playing that used
Parker's beats and sample suites as improvisational criterion. After completing 7 songs with the
band, the last of which with vocals from his daughter Ruby Parker recorded in Chicago by John
McEntire, Parker named the project The New Breed (after a clothing store his late father Ernie
owned and operated in the 70's) and finished the album by stitching the band tracks together
with intermittent pieces of beat memories from his archive.
The final presentation is a retrospective tapestry that explores Parker's past both musically as a
potent compositional tribute to his influences (J Dilla, Thelonious Monk, Charles Stepney) held
together by literal fragments of his life's work and patrilineally as a collaboration with his kin held
together by clippings from the family photo album.

Milestone Records throughout the decade.
This Far Out Recordings release is mixed and mastered from the original tapes and
will be released on 180g vinyl and CD.
Typifying the consummate craftsmanship of the three members' performances - each with such
distinct personality and together so perfectly balanced - their perfectionist attitude to sound is
maintained across the production on the album, beautifully colouring the expressionist fusion of
samba rhythm, jazz progression, funk attitude and psychedelic electronics.
The album hosts a wonderful mix of tempos and styles, from Alex Malheiros' earth-shaking slapbass on 'Dear Limmertz', which was to become a hit on London's underground disco and jazzdance club scenes alike, to the late maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami's genial melodic Rhodes
excursions on the vocoder laden, samba-jazz masterpiece 'Un Amigo', while Ivan 'Mamao' Conti's

philosophy.
The two cover versions on the album consist of the title track which was originally penned by

This year's winner of "Best Drums" in the British Jazz Awards, Clark Tracey has worn many
musical hats over his thirty-eight year career. Having long been regarded as the UK's most
accomplished straight-ahead jazz drummer, alongside that considerable achievement he's also
a composer, arranger, educator and talent-spotter par excellence. His latest quintet unites
some of the brightest young stars currently working on the British jazz circuit.
The catalyst for the new group's formation was Clark's in-house tenure as a tutor at Birmingham
Conservatoire, an establishment that boasts a formidable turn-out of notable jazz talent. Of the
many students he's heard there over the past few years, three in particular piqued the drummer's
interest: saxophonist Chris Maddock, pianist Harry Bolt and bassist Daniel Casimir. Around this
nucleus the new Clark Tracey quintet began to take shape in 2013. Clark first encountered Henry
Armburg Jennings, the band's trumpeter, when he called him to do a gig "and remarked that he

On 'With Due Respect' Freddie Redd presides over a sextet of much younger generations as

One of the handful of surviving original hard-boppers Freddie Redd is turned 88 in 2016. The
famed composer of the 60s iconic off-Broadway play The Connection Redd's recording career has

trend following the precursory 2012 release of 'Music Forever' (SCCD31743) a tribute album to

An unusual, very beautiful project by two artists from Southern Italy. Gianni Iorio is on of the
great masters of the bandoneon and he found the perfect partner in Pasquale Stafano, both
from a small town in the Gargano region of Italy.
The bandoneon is closely associated with Argentinian tango and the respect this Duo pays to the
masters of this form is no coincidence. In the early years of the last century there was a large
emigration to Argentina and Uruguay by the people of Apulia trying to escape from the economic

Level 2 is the second studio album by this awesome vintage trio from Germany, revealing them
to be true retro-futurists. Using a collection of analogue instruments from the 60s and 70s with
phasers, flangers and tape echo effects, they create a sound that would thrill the protagonists
of any space hero TV series - spaced out, danceable and ecstatic.
Even if Level 2 may appear to be effortless – ‘Organ Explosion’ is in fact the result of manically
meticulous work. In their Munich studio, Hansi Enzensperger (organ, keys), Ludwig Klöckner
(bass) und Manfred Mildenberger (drums) set out to explore the wickedest grooves, coolest lines
and freakiest sounds.
They spent several months refining their blend of funk and blues, jazzy harmonies and melodies
for the masses, coming up with 12-minute pieces such as "Jam Tune", for example, in which the
three musicians sound out entire sonic facets of the keys-bass-drums line-up. Or "Jump and Run",
packed full of new ideas and structured like a computer game. And "Benz", a track that sounds so

Igor Jadranin takes no prisoners with the title track of his EP - the monumental
'Boulevardd'. This slice of dirty and distorted techno jazz leads you into a very dark
place filled with relentless piano breaks punctuated by an unnerving single note string.
'Hero' is beautifully crafted with a staggered beat covered by a layer of synths on par
with jazz fusion great, Ronnie Foster. A killer break down leads you back into the
deceptively simple beats.
For those that like their beats broken, the Mr J's mix of 'Middle Proves' ticks all the
boxes. Vocoder interplays teamed with synth, effects and chopped vocals.
Mr Beedle steps up to the plate with his 'North Street' mix of 'Middle Proves' aided and
abetted by Darren Morris and Jo Wallace on production duties. Mr Morris's keyboard
skills come to the fore with some lush, jazz tinged piano and the vocal interludes pay
homage to the influence of UK Garage legend Todd Edwards.

Thanks to his work with and for, Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons during the 1960s and 70s,
Bob Crewe is one of the world's best known songwriters and producers. This 2CD set well
illustrates there was far more to Bob Crewe than Frankie Valli And The Four Seasons.
He began his song writing career in the 1950s and also enjoyed a career as a solo singer. This set
includes his version of "The Whiffenpoof Song" which became a hit in New York and generated a
huge amount of publicity in the teen oriented press which set Bob Crewe up as a teenage
heartthrob almost overnight. This led the way for two LPs "Kicks" in 1960 and "Crazy In The
Heart" in 1961 which are both included on the first disc of this set. The second disc features a
plethora of hits from stars such as Freddy Cannon, The Four Seasons, Frankie Lymon and more.
This small example of his work between 1957 and 1962 perfectly illustrates the genius and his
vast and notable career.

Maureen O'Hara was perhaps best known for her acting career where she often starred in
westerns and action films alongside acting greats such as John Wayne. During a two year hiatus
from acting O'Hara concentrated on her singing voice and recorded just two LPs, 'Sings Her
Favorite Irish Songs' and 'Love Letters', both of which are featured here.
As the original album titles indicate the first 16 tracks are devoted to folk songs of her native
Ireland with versions of "A Kerry Cow" and "Danny Boy" whilst tracks 17 to 28 is devoted to her

Recorded in Montreal, Quebec by Duncan Moore (reel to reel tape, voice, electronics), Max
Eilbacher (electronics, synth, voice) and Alexander Moskos (voice, programming), SEF III
presents a series of visions and vignettes on LP.
Moskos (Dranolith, AIDS Wolf) hired Eilbacher (Horse Lords) and Moore (Headband) as the
rhythm section for Drainolith after seeing them perform as Needle Gun, their ferocious Baltimore
based acid rock combo (one Needle Gun performance featured the entire McDonald's gang;
Clown Ronald, Hamburglar, Grimace).
SEF III begins with a phantasm, Duncan Moore's clown summoning text. Then there's the legend
of Crippy Lemare, Montreal Hell's Angel hangaround. There's a near-future call-center job, itself a
stage-show within the stage show of this SEF III album, not unlike Pagliacci. There's also a guide to

Shackleton's Endurance, the follow-up album to Dr Syn & The Scarecrow is now completed, and is to be
released this Spring 2016, to coincide with the centenary of Shackleton reaching civilisation after being
trapped on floating pack ice in the Antarctic.
Sir Ernest Shackleton embarked on his Great Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition on the eve of The First
World War. What began as the intended first crossing of the Antarctic continent became instead the most
amazing rescue story - the Apollo 13 of its day. The first performance of one of the album's songs The Last
Great Adventure took place at the 2014 Vigo Inn Folk n' Ale Festival. The song features the banjo (no banjo
jokes please!), referencing Shackleton's meteorologist banjo player Leonard Hussey. When the crew were
forced to leave personal belongings behind, Hussey was encouraged to bring his banjo to improve morale.

Siblings Matthew Barber and Jill Barber have spent the past 12 years focusing on their solo careers,
and while they have made guest appearances on each other's albums and have toured together, until
now the two had never made a collaborative album. This past spring, the inevitable finally happened
- Matthew and Jill began work on The Family Album.
The Family Album consists of five new compositions that were written specifically for this album and
exist largely in the folk/country/old-time-songbook world. Matthew's "The Sweeter The Dawn" floats
dreamily and burns slowly while the ballad "Grandpa Joe" is a tribute to the siblings' Scottish maternal
grandfather they never knew. Jill's "Today" is a classic affirmation of love in the face of fear, and "Big
Picture Window" is her country take on settling down and making a home.
The rest of the album is comprised of six covers; chosen from a long list of songs that were pitched,
discussed, attempted and roughly recorded during a few sessions in Vancouver (Jill's home), Toronto

Stage Door debuts the 'Two Cities' Original London Cast album on CD, coupled with the previously
unreleased original studio demos of the score featuring several songs that would be later cut from the
production.
Charles Dickens' classic novel 'A Tale Of Two Cities' was developed as a musical in the mid sixties by theatre
producer Jerry Wayne who commissioned his son Jeff to compose the score for the project. With a book by
Constance Cox, music by Jeff Wayne and lyrics by Jerry Wayne; 'Two Cities' opened at London's Palace
Theatre on February 27th 1969. The musical starred Edward Woodward (as Sydney Carton), Kevin Colson (as
Charles Darnay), Elizabeth Power (as Lucie), Leone Greene (as Monsieur Defarge), Nicolette Roeg (as
Madame Defarge).
Although reviews were mixed, 'Two Cities' earned a nomination for 'Best Musical' at the 1969 Variety Club
and Evening Standard Theatre Awards and the show's star Edward Woodward won the 1969 Variety Club and
Evening Standard Award for 'Best Male Performance in a Musical'.

This is the original soundtrack album to accompany Barbara Dickson’s one woman
stage show. Features many of the songs from the show, including several Beatles
numbers, including the perfect "She's Leaving Home". The album has so many
different songs in different styles and is a must buy.
Barbara Dickson was born in Dunfermline, Scotland. Her singing career started in folk
clubs around her native Fife in the sixties, exposing her to a rich combination of
traditional and contemporary music.
In the early seventies she sang at a Liverpool folk club run by a young student teacher
called Willy Russell. He showed Barbara the first draft of what would later become the
award-winning musical John, Paul, George, Ringo....and Bert and asked her to perform
the music. The combination of fine writing, a superb cast of young unknowns, (including
Antony Sher, Bernard Hill and Trevor Eve) and Barbara's idiosyncratic interpretation of
Beatles songs made the show hugely successful.
In 1998 the Derbyshire Times wrote:
"As she and her top-notch instrumentalists took the show through its fascinating paces,
she assumed a myriad of roles, from the frightened child to the reluctant bride, the
hard-up mother to the whore to the junkie. Sometimes it was so touching it hurt, like
Lennon and McCartney's 'She's Leaving Home'; deliciously funny, as with The Worst Pies
in London, or raunchy and upbeat with 'It's Money That I Love'...
It's a brave show with music and words showing women as they are and what they
often have to endure. I admired such honesty as much as the production's considerable

‘Postcards from Prague' by bassist David Heyes, brings together music he composed in 2009 and
2014 in memory of the great Czech double bass virtuoso František Pošta (1919-1991), who
would have celebrated his 95th birthday that year.
David Heyes had the great privilege of studying with František in Prague in 1986, shortly after his
retirement from the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra where he had been Principal Bass for over 40
years, and also throughout the late 1980s. František Pošta was a very exacting teacher, but also
an inspirational one, and his 'singing double bass' appealed to me very much, alongside his
supreme musicality and beauty of sound.
David Heyes studied double bass with Laurence Gray and Bronwen Naish, later at the Royal
College of Music in London, and completed his post-graduate studies in Prague with Frantisek
Posta (Principal Double Bass, Czech Philharmonic Orchestra). He has given recitals and
masterclasses in 13 countries over the past few years and has been a juror at a number of
international competitions, twice as chairman. David has been Specialist Double Bass Tutor at
Wells Cathedral School for 19 years, and is a member of Ensemble Bassissimo, Basso Bravura!
(with soprano Sarah Poole), Duettino Basso (with Ben Groenevelt) and Artistic Director of BassFest.
His collaborative work gained him a prestigious award from the David Walter Charitable Trust of
New York for his pioneering activities as a soloist, teacher, publisher and commissioner of new
music for double bass. He works with composers throughout the world and is particularly
interested to expand the double bass repertoire, by commissioning new works and by
rediscovering forgotten ones. Since 1990 more than 500 works have been written for him - from
one to twenty basses and from beginner to virtuoso – and he has premiered nine contemporary
concertos with orchestra.

‘Panorama' offers an overview of contemporary writing for the harpsichord, performed here by
one of the country's leading exponents, Penelope Cave. A rich and varied programme that
includes works by Delius (premiere), Holst and Peter Maxwell Davies.
Like the patchwork of fields seen from a plane, the British repertoire within this recording offers
an overview of the landscape of what is sometimes referred to as music of the early keyboard
revival. The individual pieces are mostly miniatures that draw, to varying degrees, on the vast
body of past keyboard repertoire, and yet celebrate the harpsichord as a relevant, modern
instrument. 'Panorama', the title of the final piece of the CD, also describes these aerial snapshots
from each decade from 1919 to 2013.
The English term, "Fancy", is an apt title for much of the music that displays a fanciful reevaluation of the past. In the war-torn early part of the twentieth century, there was a nostalgia
for lost national culture. A trend for 'Mock Tudor' was exemplified in vernacular architecture;
Cecil Sharp was collecting folk-songs before they disappeared; whilst recorder-music and
maypole-dances were revived for celebratory pageants for the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II.
Classical composers, such as Vaughan Williams, utilised music contemporary with the first Queen
Elizabeth, along with British folk-tunes. The English 'Scarlatti Sect' seems to have a continuous
line of descent going back to the first publication of his sonatas in London, in 1738/9, and his
influence can still be detected in some of these pieces. Collections of ancient instruments were
being established and, as the twentieth-century progressed, copies of original historic keyboards,
including virginals and clavichords, were proliferating. In the 1970s and 1980s, the building of
harpsichords based on French models led to a rediscovery of French ornamentation, and good
copies of these instruments, that concentrated more particularly on sound, per se, re-invigorated
a compositional fusion of current international styles with tropes of the past.
Inevitably, in writing for the harpsichord or clavichord, composers look back from their own
standpoint of the present, applying their knowledge, experience and imagination to the task of
revisiting the past. Many of these short pieces may only have been intended to supply a taste of a
quaint instrument, or a glimpse of a bygone age; some are now historic, themselves, and ready to
be re-evaluated or re-marginalised. If any of this music already feels 'dated', that is, perhaps, its
value; it tells much of a century of change and upheaval, where holding on to the past seemed
both a place of safety and comfort, and yet a source of new inspiration. Although Peter Maxwell
Davies was looking ahead rather than back, his protest against the ruination of Orkney, merged a
present dread with a future nostalgia. I believe these composers share a longing to celebrate a
beauty and truth that whilst seemingly evansecent, can be reappraised and showcased for the
next century.

The Dutch baritone Robbert Muuse and pianist Micha van Weers performs works by GermanDutch composer Julius Röntgen, another composer who lived in the first half of 20th Century
that deserves to be rediscovered. He wrote several collection of Lieder here presented as world
premiere recordings.
Julius Röntgen was a Dutch-German musician, born in Leipzig in 1855. In 1878 he moved to
Amsterdam. As pianist, conductor, concert organiser and co-founder of the first conservatory in
Amsterdam, he was one of pillars of a developing musical life in the Netherlands. This selection of
lieder are from his Dutch period.
Baritone Johannes Messchaert came forward in 1881. He showed a warm interest in Röntgen’s
music. A deep friendship grew between them as well as a stage relationship that would last for 33
years. The Messchaert-Röntgen evenings were much loved. Lieder were alternated with piano
solo pieces.
Around the time of World War I, musical aesthetics underwent a complete shake-up. Röntgen did
not reject all the innovative new music, and at later age he even came to enjoy jazz and Gershwin,
but apparently he could only be true to himself. Brahms, Joseph Joachim and Grieg were no
longer there, but listening to these lieder reveals a man who managed to carry on by asking his
friends examining questions.
A new generation of open-minded musicians has recently opened up surprising horizons in his
work. There is still a lot to be discovered in Röntgen’s extensive oeuvre. After all, as Messchaert
already pointed out the part of him you could see was 'the smallest part'. ‘To see Röntgen, you
must hear him’.

The Norwegian trio Poing is one of Scandinavia's leading ensembles in the
contemporary field. Known for their wild virtuosity, humour, seriousness and improv,
Poing is impossible to pin down.
Their constant touring has brought POING all over the world, including such festivals as Other
Minds, Huddersfield and Klangspuren. 'Sur Poing' is the result of several years of collaboration
with composers Richard Barrett and Helmut Oehring. A blind date with the legendary drummer
Paul Lovens in a highly energetic free improvisation, recorded live in Oslo, also finds its natural
place on this release.
German composer Helmut Oehring (1961) has created a 'double portrait' in the title track 'sur
Poing' (to Poing) by combining the story of the trio with his own story. The work is a combination
of sound clips of Poing telling about their instruments, field recordings from their career and a
musical collection of Oehrings existing compositions. "The result is a shrewdly constructed double
portrait - quite unlike anything else" accordionist Frode Haltli reports.
'Cell' is the result of six years of collaboration between Poing and the Welsh composer Richard
Barrett (1959), one of the great heroes of the trio since the 90s. The piece is a combination of
composition and improvisation, finding its energy in both traditions - without the listener having
to know or even care as for which is what. The sounding result is explosive: precise trio playing
meets up with anarchistic blow-outs - followed by deafening silence.
Poing is Rolf-Erik Nystrøm on saxophones, Frode Haltli on accordion and Håkon Thelin on double
bass. They started playing together in 1999, and have since been one of the leading ensembles
for contemporary music in Scandinavia. They have played in clubs and concert halls in most
European countries, the US as well as in China and Japan, with more than 100 first performances.

Jean-Luc Ho’s latest opus, Walsingham, is dedicated to William Byrd’s works for keyboard
instruments. It follows two records devoted to Albinoni’s violin sonatas, accompanied by
Guillaume Rebinguet-Sudre and Claire Gratton (ECL 1302), and to Bach and Couperin’s pieces
for harpsichord (ECL1101), which were released, in 2014 and 2012 respectively, by L’Encelade, a
label which was set up to release baroque music in 2010.
Remaining true to his interest in authentic techniques, Jean-Luc Ho plays a harpsichord using
meantone tuning inspired by the Renaissance model in order to get as close as possible to the
sound world of the period.
William Byrd is a pivotal composer, linking the Renaissance and baroque styles, and one of the
most important representatives of the English school of music for keyboard instruments. He
studied with Tallis, was appointed a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal in 1572 and Elizabeth I
granted him (together with his master) numerous musical privileges starting in 1575.
The programme recorded includes extracts from his various books. Jean-Luc Ho developed a
passion for old keyboard instruments when he was still very young and began learning the
harpsichord at the age of eight, then the organ followed by the clavichord. He won prizes at the
Paris Conservatoire-CNSMDP in 2006 (First Prizes, for harpsichord with Olivier Baumont, and for
basso continuo with Blandine Rannou).

The Motets pour une Princesse is the Ensemble Marguerite Louise’s first release for L’Encelade,
a label specialising in baroque music set up by Stéphane Breyer in 2010.
In the late 1660s, Charpentier came back from a long journey to Italy and settled in Paris. He took
up residence at the home of Marie de Lorraine, Princess de Joinville, Duchess de Joyeuse and
Duchess de Guise, who had a large townhouse in the Rue de Chaume. Mademoiselle de Guise
was a great music lover and offered Charpentier a wonderful environment, allowing him to work
on his art under ideal conditions. This meant he was able to surround himself with musicians and
singers of the very highest quality; indeed the musical standard at the Hotel de Guise rivalled that
of the Court.
In the words of Le Mercure Galant, “The music of many great sovereigns does not come close”.
The result was that Charpentier composed his most expressive works during the time he spent
living here, switching between theatrical spirituality, rhetorical genius and emotional discourse.
Of the six motets by Charpentier presented here - most of which are recorded for the first time
and have been chosen for their diversity of climate and writing style - four are musical settings of
psalms, one uses a prayer to the Blessed Sacrament and the other an ode to the Virgin Mary. All
of these works are written for three solo voice and two instrumental dessus in addition to the
basso continuo, except for psalm 12 (H 196), which has four voic-es and a bass flute, rather an
unusual instrument in this repertoire.
We have two books of organ music by Jacques Boyvin (the first published in 1689, the second in
1700), each containing eight suites, one in each ecclesiastical tone.
The chosen extracts allow us to enjoy a variety of mixtures all characteristic of French baroque
organ music. Their flavour further enhances a musical language which is both concise and
expressive, with an enormous con-centration of melodic and harmonic idioms which bring it even
closer to Charpentier’s own style, with delicious hints of modality adding extra colour to the
discourse.

Maarten Koningsberger talks about his Schumann/Heine project for
baritone and string quartet:
“Schumann Lieder in an arrangement for baritone and string quartet with Schumann’s piano
accompaniments are extremely beautiful and among the best ever written. However, in 2010 the
Concertgebouw in Amsterdam asked me to sing Dichterliebe at a celebration concert for
Schumann’s 200th birthday.
It was to be a special concert and an arrangement for baritone and four string players from the
Orchestra had been commissioned. This seemed a little odd at first, but I was also quite excited
by the idea; the premiere turned out to be a great success!
Wim ten Have is a great connoisseur of Schumann’s music and his score follows the original
meticulously and with great respect. I was told by some that they had heard ‘new voices’ in the
accompaniment, although none were added. Another comment was that ‘my ears opened in a
new way’ while listening to strings playing this famous piano score. I myself had had rather
similar experiences during the rehearsals, probably due to the fact that now four musicians were
playing the score instead of one, which inevitably stimulates musical dialogue.
The singer and listener both experience new sounds, new colours, different tempi and other
expressions. The arrangement stayed on the shelf until I asked the Matangi Quartet to join me in
this adventure and since then we have performed this wonderful music at many concerts always
with great joy and enthusiasm of the audiences, which has led to this wonderful new recording.”

Terra Nova Antwerp is a musical research ensemble based in Antwerp. The ensemble seeks out
interesting unknown or forgotten music and breathes new life into it on the concert platform.

western musical repertoire.

(1842-1911) and Alphonse Hasselmans (1845-1912) alongside more traditional repertoire from
