A ll or most of the foreskin is removed. The glans will thereby be exposed. The skin of the glans will often need several months to get used to the absence of foreskin. To prevent the skin of the glans from drying, cracking or becoming ulcerous during this transitional period it is best to apply an ointment after going to the toilet and after a bath or washing. A mild, fatty skin ointment such as white Vaseline can be applied around the urethral orifice. This may be necessary for 3–4 weeks after the operation. Out & about The child can be out and about as from the day after the operation. A clean protective dressing and vaseline are recommended. Shower & bath The child can shower 2-3 days after the operation and have a bath after 1 week. Gymnastics & sport The child should not take part for the first 2–3 weeks after the operation. To be bought from a pharmacy before the operation White vaseline, dressing (10 x 10 cm, non-sterile) and narrow sticking plaster/Micropore tape for sensitive skin. Alvedon and Xylocaine against pain. Urination Smarting pain when peeing will sometimes means that the child will hold back for as long as possible. These symptoms will pass within a few days. Allow the child to drink as normal. A thin layer of Xylocaine should be applied in conjunction with nappy changes and going to the toilet for the first 3–4 days after the operation. Stitches The foreskin is sewn using thread that dissolves and falls out of its own accord. School The child will usually need to be absent from school for between a few days and a week. Cycling Cycling is allowed. Exercise care! What to do in the event of complications Foreskin operations always entail some swelling of the penis. The swelling will usually increase during the first days after the operation. Any infection of the wound will cause severe reddening of the skin, a high temperature and possibly pus. An examination by a nurse or doctor at the nearest health centre will then be necessary. In the first 24 hours after the operation the wound will tend to bleed easily. Heavy bleeding is very rare, but if it does occur go to A&E or paediatric A&E.
