Mille Lacs, a vacation . . .
don't forget
you won't forget
your swimsuit, water skis,
inner tubes, beach toys
and oh yes – the kids!
Mille Lacs' Mascots
The Garrison Walleye is located on the
Garrison Concourse. The 15' Walleye
came to Garrison from Wisconsin in the
early 1980’s. It was constructed by the
F.A.S.T. Company which specialized in
fiberglass products. The Garrison Walleye attracts thousands of visitors from
all over the world to the Concourse each
year. Legend has it that this walleye was
caught by Paul Bunyan after a 3-day
struggle. Paul finally wrapped his line
around Babe the Blue Ox's horns and
Babe pulled the fish out of Lake Mille
Lacs and up onto Garrison Beach.
The Mean Walleye and Massive
Muskie are located at Portside Bait &
Liquor on the SE corner of the lake, just
north of the City of Isle. The 20’ Walleye
and 25’ Muskie are made of fiberglass,
and they are not your ordinary fish!
1st National Bank of Milaca in Isle is
where you will find a 20’ Walleye made
of fiberglass. More than 25 years ago the
Isle Civic & Commerce group moved the
walleye to the bank because the bank
said they would maintain it. Plans are
currently underway for some maintenance
work, including painting.
Also in Isle, Unique Boatique's building owner has installed two 600 lb. fish.
Carved from pine in just three hours by a
Ota, a Japanese chainsaw master for a
chainsaw carving contest in Hackensack,
Minnesota. He won the contest.

As you look out across the sparkling waters of Mille Lacs on a sunny
summer afternoon, there is much
more there than meets the eye. People have sought out this great
lake since shortly after it was created
by glaciers thousands of years
ago. It has been called by
many names, depending
on who was doing the
naming, such as Me-DeWakan-Ton, Minsi-Saganonging, Lake Buade,
and now Mille Lacs
Lake, or Lake Mille Lacs if you
prefer. The area around Mille Lacs
became part of the United States with
the treaty that ended the Revolutionary War, and became part of Indiana
Territory in 1800.
This area has been a home and workplace to countless groups of
Native Americans (presently the
Ojibwe); European and American
explorers and fur traders; FrenchCanadian voyageurs; Scandinavian
lumberjacks, sawmillers, and farmers;
town folk, storekeepers, and resorters. The big lake was once host to
large steamboats, hauling supplies
and timber before the days of paved
roads. For nearly 90 years the Soo
Line Railroad touched the shore of
Mille Lacs, moving mail, freight and
produce. Horse-drawn wagons and
sleds also moved people, supplies and
timber around the area. Small towns
sprang up in the days before automobiles, and still survive in the 21st century to provide services to residents
and visitors around the countryside.
The former route once plied by
massive steam locomotives is now
used by hikers, ATV riders, bicyclists,
and snowmobilers. Mille Lacs Lake is
a center for year-round fishing, camping, summer swimming, and recreational
boating. Opportunities for hunting and
hiking abound in the
adjacent forest areas. The
lake becomes a frozen metropolis
in winter, as thousands of ice fishing houses cover the frozen surface. Resorts and campgrounds cover
the surrounding area as well. Town
celebrations and various festivals dot
the area, with something for everyone. There is even a casino with a
hotel and entertainment complex on
the west shore!
Visit Mille Lacs and see why people
keep coming back!

Launch Fishing and
Private Guide Service
Launch fishing back in the
1930’s was different. Flat-bottom
wooden boats
were hooked together in a chain
like fashion.
They were then
towed out into
the lake about a
half mile to the
rocks or sand
bars by the
captain. They
had no set
time limit and
would fish until they were ready to be hauled
home.
Today, Mille Lacs is one of a few Minnesota lakes big
enough to accommodate launches. These group fishing
boats range in size from 25' to 73' and hold 6-50 people.
Many resorts around the lake carry on the 70-year old
tradition, offering morning, afternoon and evening departures with half-day, full-day and night options. Single
group private charters are available as well as walk-on
launch trips for singles, couples, families and other
groups. No need to bring your own equipment as most
launches furnish bait, tackle and advice. Fun is a trip
standard!
In addition to launch fishing, local guides are often
second or third generation Mille Lacs dwellers with the
accumulated knowledge of more than a single lifetime.
They know their way around the lake's unique structure
and can pinpoint reefs and drop-offs where fish customarily gather. They too, provide everything you need
– poles, bait and tackle. Our professional guides will give
you and your family the experience of a lifetime.

When you come
to Mille Lacs . . .

to bring your golf clubs . . .
and your swim suit . . .
and your rabbit's foot.
Kathio State Park is located NW
of Onamia. The park’s 10,000+ acres
of lakes and hills is the lush setting for
woods, wildflowers, creeks, ponds and
the beautiful Rum River. In summer
the park features semi-modern campsites, a primitive group camp, canoe
and boat launch, swimming beach,
fishing, 35 miles of hiking trails and
27 miles of horseback riding trails. In
winter, visitors can explore snowmobile, cross-country and snowshoeing
trails too. The park also features an
Interpretive Center, a naturalist and a
100-foot observation tower.
Father Hennepin State Park is on
the SE shore of Mille Lacs near Isle.
Group and individual campsites dot
the park. Visitors will find two boat
launches, a fishing pier, swimming
beach and hiking trails. In winter the
park is open for cross-country skiing
and snowshoeing.
The Wildlife Management Area
is south of the lake, one mile north of
the intersection of Mille Lacs County
Road 19 and 20. It has 61 square
miles of wet, rocky land.
Approximately 100
miles of roads and
trails traverse the
WMA, with public
access points offered
at 80 locations around
the WMA. They are used by
hunters, loggers and other outdoor
recreationalists who enjoy the natural
beauty and solitude of the area.
Isle, Wahkon, Onamia and Garrison City Parks offer a variety of
different services including picnic
areas, shelters, playground, bathroom
facilities, beach and boat ramps. They
are a great place to relax and enjoy a

When you come
to Mille Lacs . . .
don't forget
that there are four
seasons of fishing
and 365 days of fun.
Four Seasons of Fishing
Often called the "Walleye
Capital," Mille Lacs Lake produces a
harvest of 200,000 to 400,000
walleyes each year. But,
there's more than Walleye
beneath its surface. All
told, this renowned lake is
home to 40 species of fish
include Smallmouth Bass,
Northern Pike, Perch
and Muskie. And you
don’t have to be an experienced
angler to appreciate this unique
fishery-there’s something for every
level of angler.
Spring
Just after ice out the bays can
hold perch, crappie and sunfish in
their warmer waters. Toss out a bobber tipped with leeches or crappie
minnows.
Summer
May is the fishing opener. With
Mille Lacs Lake and many surrounding lakes, we have the best fishing for
walleye, northern pike, muskie and
panfish. Mille Lacs is becoming a well
known fishery for quality smallmouth
bass. Pitch tube jigs and rubber
worms to entice their strike. Hop on a
launch or hire a guide.
Fall
18 www.millelacs.com
Night trolling is a favorite fall
technique on most areas of the lake
for lunker walleye. Huge muskie are
also on the move feeding to fatten up
for the winter months. Local guides
and launch captains specialize in fall
techniques for walleye and muskie.
Winter
As soon as the ice is thick
enough the ice fishing season begins.
