COnsumer spending, the dollar
and the caloundra cbd ‘love caloundra’ campaign
The rise and rise of the
Australian dollar to hit
US $1.10 is having a major
effect on our central
business district and
Caloundra’s Tourism and
Retail sector.
The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce has
underwritten an advertising campaign to
draw people and their dollars back into
Bulcock Street and the surrounding CBD
area.
During August, a $60,000 advertising blitz
was supported by our partners Caloundra
Journal and Hot 91.1. This includes
‘Free Parking Fridays’ where the cost of
operating parking meters has been met
by the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce
to form the backdrop to this promotion.
Retailers are getting in behind the
campaign by offering promotional
discounts and specials along with
‘Caloundra Cash’ rebates.
We must get customers back into
Caloundra shops rather than them
spending in other areas such as
Chermside and North Lakes. A recent
study conducted on the Sunshine Coast
revealed that 27% of our local shoppers
had recently shopped outside Coast
Retail businesses in a six week period.
Another study has shown that consumers
are clearly more price focused and are
prepared to change their purchasing
habits as they seek value for money.
BIS Shrapnel, in their latest report, said
that their outlook for retail is positive,
4 caloundrabuzz
however, returns will not be easy and
that retail faces a number of key risks
in the short to medium term, such as
the sustained strength of the Australian
dollar and consumer sentiment.
We must push the
advantages of buying
locally, where our
retailers have already
built loyalty and their
customers ‘truly
trust’ the retailers
value for money price
positioning.
Our members need to carefully review
their business strategies. Wal-Mart in the
United States have recently made it clear
that high – low price shenanigans are off
the table and that building trust through
price consistency is their highest value.
We must push the advantages of buying
locally, where our retailers have already
built loyalty and their customers ‘truly
trust’ the retailers value for money
price positioning. Rising fuel prices are
another cost saving measure as locals
push to make their money go further.
Localised pricing and a focus on high
levels of service will ensure that we can
win the day.
The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce
will continue working with our members
and the CBD retailers to promote this
area as a great place to do business. We
need to continue to ‘win the hearts’ of
locals and encourage them to buy locally.
Locals in turn need to understand that
shopping locally is a must - if you don’t
use it, you lose it.
Everyone in the chain needs to make a
profit and have a profitable business to
survive. If we don’t all work together and
shop locally we will wake up one morning
and find a shop or service we really need
is no longer in existence. This has an
impact on our whole economy.
Your Chamber cannot do it on its own, but
we are here to help. We need a group of
people to help us to promote our central
business district. Please consider it and if
you can make a commitment contact Sally
Waghorn, our retail committee expert
at ‘[email protected]’
or Steve Gaeth our Executive Officer at
‘[email protected]’ and
offer your support.
Together we can make Caloundra a ‘must
visit’ in the Sunshine Coast retail scene.

As we approach the AGM for the
Caloundra Chamber on 13 September,
it is interesting to summarise some of
the projects that we are working on and
major achievements that we have seen
in 2011.
This year has been our busiest ever
as the Chamber actively seeks to fulfil
its mission of “facilitating a dynamic
environment that will assist our
members, local businesses and our
community to grow”.
We encourage all our members to get
involved with the Caloundra Chamber
and be part of the solution in creating
that dynamic economic environment
that we all need to thrive on the
Sunshine Coast.

Red Hot Chilli Pepper is a
boutique herbs and spice shop
owned and operated by Vicki
Taylor. The shop opened in
February this year and is based
near the first roundabout on
lower Bulcock Street. Come in,
inhale deeply and let your senses
take you on a culinary journey
around the world!
What motivated you to open up your
business?
I have always had a passion for travel
& cooking using spices. This derives
from years of living abroad in various
countries and experiencing different
foods and cultures. I also love bright,
authentic and traditional ceramics and
have a huge collection of memorabilia
at home brought back from my Middle
Eastern and Asian travels.
The shop, essentially, is my personality. I
always had a dream and a plan in place
to open up a shop and sell things in it
that I liked, but I never actually did
anything with the plan! Previous to
moving to the Sunshine Coast I worked
for a large international Investment Bank
for 16 years and I decided a change was
needed! Fate intervened and we moved
up to the Sunshine Coast due to my
husband transferring jobs so I decided
to open up my shop.
Why did you select Caloundra, Sunshine
Coast for your business?
I looked everywhere on the Sunshine
Coast before selecting Caloundra as I
liked the look and feel of the Bulcock
Street shops and the leafy trees. As a
child I remember shopping with my
mother, walking up one side of the
street before crossing over and walking
down the other side. I still do that
today.
Caloundra has some wonderful boutique
shops, many of which you won’t find in
a shopping centre and I wanted to be
part of this culture.
How did you go about setting up your
business?
It all happened quite quickly
actually! When we moved up here I
decided after a few weeks that it was
now or never so I pulled the plan out
and we took it from there. It only took
3 months from plan to opening to get
everything ready.
What services/ products does Red Hot
Chilli Pepper sell? As well as selling herbs & spices, we offer
great advice on spices, spice storage
solutions and cooking with spices. All
spice packets have yummy recipes on
the back of each. Every weekend there is free food tastings
available based on a shop product or
the ‘spice of the week.’ We also stock
gourmet foods from local, regional and
Australia-wide areas as well as a few
international brands.
All products have been tried and
tested. There is a colourful offering
of cooking vessels to choose from;
from woks and paella pans through to
the traditional cooking tagines, and
lots of gift ideas. Gift vouchers are now
available and hampers can be made up
on request.
spice of the month, the tasting calendar
for the month and special offers.
What has been Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s
greatest challenge to date?
That’s a tough one but I would probably
have to say a big challenge was setting
up accounts with suppliers in the
beginning. Because I didn’t have any
credit ratings, I found that challenging
but got around this by paying for
everything up front before delivery. The
other big challenge or risk was opening
in this current economic climate. But I
felt that the timing was right as more
and more people are cooking again,
which is great.
Programs like MasterChef and My
Kitchen Rules have helped influence
this and people are being more creative
with flavours now and trying new foods
all the time.
What are your business tips & advice
to others running a business?
A few actually; 1) Network, network and
keep networking! Building your brand is
vital. 2.) Understanding your cash flows.
How do you source these products? This helps with budgets and any future

Now, to put into perspective, the impact
of the mining boom and our Gross State
Income grew at over 11%! We are very
well positioned to make the most of this
massive mining boom.
Now I wouldn’t class the Sunshine Coast
as a ‘mining town’ but we are close to
Brisbane which is (22% of jobs relate
to the mining sector) and have a highly
desirable location. More importantly the
Sunshine Coast is the only non mining
regional economy expected to expand
by over 10% in the next 3 years.
Not quite how Bob Dylan would
have put it, but a wake up call
nonetheless. With massive
changes occurring in our National,
State and local economy, we need
to understand what these changes
are and adapt. Those who do will
reap significant benefits, those
who are slow or refuse will
wither away or miss the boat.
Let me put these bold statements in
perspective. The RBA have one of the
best and largest teams of analysts of any
central bank just studying Asia and China.
They have been analysing the changes
in resource demand and its implications
for Australia for years, yet in June the
RBA Governor said “I think we have only
begun to grasp its implications relatively
recently.” What he’s essentially saying is
what we’re seeing now is really only the
tip of the iceberg.
Without doubt Australia is in a boom.
Mining investment as a percentage of
GDP is now around 7% almost double
its pre GFC peak of 4% and still heading
north. The resource booms of the 70s &
80s only peaked around 2.5-3%. Before
8 caloundrabuzz
that, the last major peak was in the early
1900s at under 2%! With past economic
‘boom’ times there have been significant
policy decisions that have created a
‘structural’ (permanent) change in our
economy such as deregulation in the late
‘70s and inflation targeting in the ‘90s.
The current structural change is a result
of a fundamental shift in demand in the
developing world and a growing appetite
for our resources – ie. ‘market’ driven,
not ‘policy’ driven. This means that the
effect is much more fragmented across
the economy. It also means those bus
inesses reliant on a low dollar need to
change, and fast. However, on the flip
side, there are some very positive effects
not yet seen.
In Queensland our economy is much
less diverse than NSW and Victoria and
has always run at a different speed and
timing to its southern counterparts.
We have particularly struggled recently
with a decline in interstate migration
as a result of widespread floods and
cyclones and their subsequent affect on
production (particularly mining) meant
that our Gross State Production last year
only grew at around 0.3%.
Sunshine Coast is
the only non mining
regional economy
expected to expand
by over 10% in the
next 3 years
The soon to start University Hospital
project alone will directly expand our
Gross Regional Product by 4 to 5% (not
just construction, the ongoing operational
expenditure). The direct flow on effect
will be in the vicinity of 10-15%... from
just one project! With all that is on the
way for the Sunshine Coast over the next
five years we are about to enter a phase
of expansion comparable to that of the
Gold Coast in its heyday (just think about
that for moment).
Even without the wide spread benefits
of the mining boom the future is looking
bright for the Coast… we’ll definitely
need our shades!
One thing is certain though, the future
will be very different to the past and
businesses will need to look for where
the new opportunities lie and adjust to
grow and prosper.
On a more personal note, have you
thought about how you might benefit the
changes happening here on the Coast…

media release
Red Energy
Promotions are one
such example of
a Sunshine Coast
business that is
both defying trends
and experiencing
unprecedented growth.
Can you grow a business in a declining market? Whilst this seems like an
improbable scenario, the simple answer is yes. When dealing with a shrinking pie,
proactive companies look to increasing their market share, so that when the
market turns – their business is in a very strong position.
Red Energy Promotions are one
such example of a Sunshine Coast
business that is both defying trends
and experiencing unprecedented
growth.
As suppliers of promotional
products, stationery, clothing/
uniforms, merchandise and
corporate gifts, Red Energy
Promotions has a very wide product
range; 30,000 products strong in
fact. Luckily, the client base is just
as diverse as the products.
“We are very fortunate, having
clients in every state of Australia, as
well as in Papua New Guinea, New
Zealand and Dubai (UAE). Regarded
as one of the most dynamic
promotional product companies in
Australia, we also have the benefit
of getting to live and work on the
Sunshine Coast” says John Leach,
Director of Red Energy Promotions.
Red Energy’s growth has spurred
the construction of a custom-built
showroom and office at their site
on 66 Nicklin Way, Buddina. “Whilst
the prospect of investing $1m into
the construction of this building
is daunting, we are finding that
more and more of our clients are
performing very well – reinforcing
that our decision is warranted”

red polished concrete floor (the first
of its kind that Hanson have ever
poured in SEQ).
John admits that when he started
the business 7 years ago, that he
had not envisaged that the business
would have grown so quickly.
“People often ask what the secret
of our success is, and the funny part
about it, is that it isn’t really a secret
at all – look after your customers or
somebody else will”.
“When we started the company,
it was my wife Kylie and I, with a
graphic designer. We now employ a
team of 11 people and will need to
add another 2 staff in the next
few months.
Our new building is designed to
accommodate the growing business,
but more importantly, is about
creating an environment where
staff love to work and clients love
to visit”.
“Providing great service isn’t enough
anymore” John admits. “If you
ask any business, they will all say
that they sell quality products and
have great service, so if everyone is
providing this, how does someone
stand out in the market?” For
solutions to this common problem,
we encourage a visit to Red Energy
Promotions to discuss.

features such as a meeting room

education spotlight
This program creates partnerships
between business and schools and allows
“real” learning to take place” Gillian
Meyers said.
At the end of the week, the students
delivered a very professional presentation
to the board of directors, teachers and
parents.
The biggest reward for me is watching the
students gain confidence over the week.
When they arrive on Monday morning,
they are daunted by the project and
having to produce results which will be of
value to the business.
“One of my favourite weeks
of the year is when I take
a group of students from
Unity College at Bellvista
for work experience”
Bob Vander Wal said.
The
students
become
Business
Consultants for a week. They arrived at
Plastec in Caloundra on Monday morning
and were presented with an issue which
needed to be solved.
Plastec were developing a new capability
and the students were given the task
of identifying what needs to be done
to complete the new capability, what
additional functions could it perform and
what is the best way to market it.
Unity College Business teacher, Gillian
Meyers said the Program has allowed
students from Unity College to truly
experience life as a business executive.
“The students learned valuable skills and
gained self-confidence brought about
from being valued as an integral part of
Plastec’s business. The support of Will
Casey and his staff in this program is
greatly appreciated. It is a credit to Plastec
to involve themselves in developing and
encouraging the entrepreneurial and
business skills of our youth and exciting
them to be part of the business world.
But by the end of the week, they were
full of confidence, knowing they have
done the work and produced something
which could solve an important issue for
the business.
I would like to thank Plastec, Gillian
Meyers and Unity College and especially
the students, for participating and I look
forward to facilitating this program again
next year.
Mentoring our youth whether it be in
business or life skills is really important,
it does take time and patience but
the benefits both personally and
professionally are immeasurable.

INDUSTRIAL PARK PRICES CUT
Mounting pressure has forced the State
Government to slash prices on vacant land at
the Sunshine Coast Industrial Park by 10 percent.
Until recently, only four out of the
73 lots in the $60m taxpayer-funded
industrial park had been sold, with only
two buildings completed – an asphalt
plant and TranslInk bus depot (see
CaloundraBUZZ August/September 2010
edition – Page 7).
The park was labelled a failure and the
State Government slammed for not
actively encouraging businesses to come
to the area.
The Caloundra Chamber of Commerce &
Industry partnered with the UDIA (Urban
Land Development Institute) to lobby
the State Government for a drop in land
prices and attract industry to the area.
Chamber president Bob Thompson said
the State Government’s latest move
was a good sign. “They are keen to get
industry to the Coast and get contracts
on the land” he said. “We’d love to see
some more activity out there”.
A spokesperson for DEEDI (Department
of Employment, Economic Development
and Innovation) said the price adjustment
was made based on a commissioned,
independent third party valuation.
“The market has responded positively
to the recent price reduction” she said.
“Five lots have been sold and a sixth
is under contract. It was built for the
long term and when market conditions
improve, it will become a major regional
employment hub”.
UDIA
Sunshine

Some of these vouchers have already
been used, thus succeeding in bringing
the audience back into Bulcock Street to

The guests enjoyed a two course dinner
and the Currimundi Special School, the

$1500 raised from the raffle. Due to
demand, Chilli Jam have set another date
for the next Ladies Night/fashion show
location. “We are offering all potential
tenants access to planners, designers,
financiers, surveyors and tradespeople to
help get them over the line” he said.
The Caloundra Chamber’s economic
development chair Bob Vander Wal
said businesses should be falling over
themselves to relocate. “It’s in a great
position off Caloundra Road with easy
access to Brisbane airport and ports and
other regional business hubs” he said.
“A variety of lot sizes are on offer and all
the necessary roads and development
infrastructure is already in place”.

and workforce-ready population which
means securing high-quality employees
will not be difficult either” Bob said.

SUSTAINABILITY LIVING?
Setting politics aside,
In truth, it is many things to many
different people.
SUSTAINABLE LIVING
The Government have been
selling the theory of higher taxes
as a means to, “save the planet ...
better the world ... leave a legacy
for our children ...” by claiming
the funds raised by the tax will
change our carbon pollution ...
hmmmmm
To the Tree Hugger sustainable living
is an ideology, of wet lands, green tree
frogs and ecosystem.
To the Developer sustainable means
getting more yield for less embodied
energy (the energy used to produce a
product) smaller blocks, more intensive
practices and urbanization.
To the Scientist it’s about
measurement, largely of eco
technologies such as solar and low
energy consumption appliances.
To the Technician it’s about bolting on
solar panels and changing light bulbs.
To Building Code it’s about the Building
Energy Rating System (BERS) which
provides a rating for a house based
upon a computer model which seeks
to increase insulation and reduce
windows.
To the Philosopher it’s about theory
without any care for realism, practicality
or finances.
TO MOST OF US it’s about a far away
notion of melting ice caps, global
warming and rising sea levels. We are
simply destroying our planet with over
pollution, excessive use of carbon and
disposable driven mentality.
We all feel the very real affects of
this with exponential increases in the
price of power, water and the cost of
maintaining a home.
In response to the desire for higher
quality living standards and homes
based upon performance and comfort,
Planet Homes Queensland have

tourism update
From Gemma O’Brien
NEW FACES ON THE BLOCK
Sunshine Coast Destination (SCDL)
appointed Steve Cooper as CEO in July.
Steve is well known in tourism circles
as he was most recently the CEO of
Tourism Noosa. Previously, Steve’s 20
year management career included roles
with State Rail NSW, Queensland Rail,
Northern Territory Government, VIC’s
Tourism Murray River, and finally as CEO
of Tourism Noosa since 2007.
‘Spin to Win’ campaign,
encouraged users to spin
three dials that randomly
chose a prize incorporating
accommodation, activities
and extra’s. The user was
then entered into a daily
draw worth $1000 or
more. All other entrants
went into the draw for the
major $15,000 Sunshine
Coast prize and were
given links to operator
deals to book their own
escapes. The campaign
was launched at the Wheel of Brisbane
on 14 July by the Minister for Tourism,
Manufacturing and Small Business, Hon
Jan Jarrett MP.
With extensive media coverage including
Channel 7 in regional NSW, VIC and QLD,
this was a truly national campaign that
incentivised competitors to send viral
through social media. Over 90 Sunshine
Coast operators were part of the campaign

To the home of the long
white ‘ash’ cloud
Caloundra operators recently took part
in our largest Sunshine Coast Mission to
New Zealand. Trade events and media
lunches were held in Auckland, Tauranga
and Wellington. In addition, a shopping
centre promotion was included at Sylvia
Park Shopping Centre in Auckland,
with Australia Zoo’s Khan the Tiger and
Billabong Bill making an appearance. The
trip was certainly action packed. Logistics
were constantly being tweaked to avoid
the ash cloud and flight disruptions but
all events proved to be successful. The
timing for the mission was just right, with
a campaign in partnership with Flight
Centre occurring the week the operators
were in town. Excellent sales results
ensued with significant advertising, driving
consumers to travel agents who had been
freshly trained. Sales calls in Wellington
took on a new twist with the operators
participating in an ‘Amazing Race’ around
the city to conduct their sales calls!!
A direct initiative resulting from the
mission was further promotion with Flight
Centre and More fm in Auckland who sent
one of their presenters to the Sunshine
Coast to blog and send back live reads
during their week in the region giving
listeners the chance to win a Sunshine
Coast Holiday a day. The presenter stayed
in Caloundra for some of her stay and
took on Pumicestone Passage by jetski as
well as getting up close and personal to
our wildlife at Australia Zoo.
Caloundra Music Festival –

blend of the modern, old favourites, soul,
blues, jazz, funk and R&B, it is sure to be

become Internationally

As part of the ongoing Tourism Queensland

twelve Sunshine Coast operators recently
attended a 2 day master class hosted at
Rumba Resort in Caloundra.
With presentations from industry
experts including representatives from
two of Australia’s largest Inbound Tour

useful information. All operators have
been working with Tourism Queensland
and SCDL on the program for the past
two years and have included mentoring

Pia Rule and sister Rosa Collins are
well known faces in the Caloundra
community. As resident managers of
Portobello By The Sea in Dicky Beach,
we took the time to get to know them
a little better . . . .
What made you choose Caloundra on
the Sunshine Coast as a place to live?
Portobello By The Sea was the business
we wanted to buy, so that’s why we are
here. We couldn’t be happier, we love
living in Caloundra. We love the choice of
beaches and the community - the people
are great!
What is the best thing about managing
Portobello Resort on Dicky Beach?
We love the unspoilt feel of Dicky Beach,
it’s just like the beach holidays we had as
kids. We have so many repeat guests, we
love to catch up with them each time they
return. The best thing is that we both work
2 weeks on and 2 weeks off which means
that we always come back to work after
our 2 weeks off refreshed and motivated. What is the most exciting job you have
each had?
Pia: Working at newly opened 5 star The
Heritage Hotel in Brisbane in 1992. We
had many famous people staying including
Madonna, Prince, and U2. It was pretty
amazing to see these people!
Rosa: My 8 years of managing and
teaching at Qld School of Beauty in
Brisbane. I do miss all those facials,
manicures and massages – the students
had to practice on someone!! What is your favourite eating haunt in
Caloundra?
Pia: We have had many enjoyable meals
at La Dolce Vita, the food is always great
and the friendly service from Khabeer is
always fun!
Rosa: Talay’s Somboon Thai Restaurant
in Golden Beach. Part owners Glen & Joh
serve some fabulous Thai food.
What is your all time favourite holiday
destination and why?
Pia: Bali. We loved the culture, the people
and the many experiences we had whilst
we were there.
Rosa: Japan for the awesome skiing, the
gorgeous Japanese people and of course
the fabulous food.
What makes the Sunshine Coast –
Naturally Refreshing for you?
We are very lucky on the Sunshine Coast
to have so many amazing places right on
our doorstep. From the beautiful beaches,
to the gorgeous hinterland we are spoilt
for choice! Both of us run so nothing is
more spectacular than running along one
of our many coastal pathways as the sun
slowly rises over the water, reminds us of
how lucky we are.
www.portobellobythesea.com.au
What new initiatives/changes have you
brought to Portobello since you arrived?
There have been many changes and
new initiatives, however our greatest
progression and changes have come via
our website and online opportunities. It’s
so important to have an online presence
and more importantly, just keeping up
with it!!!
Recently we joined the social media
scene and started our Facebook page
for Portobello so we are now constantly
looking at ways to promote Portobello
through social media.
The team at Sunshine Coast Destination
would love to hear from tourism operators
wanting to receive opportunities & updates.

How did you start your
business ‘Sococo’?
My involvement with the Sococo range
began early 2005 when my wife and I, like
many others, responded to the Boxing
Day Tsunami. Unfortunately Nias Island
(the source of our current product range)
was struck by a second quake, which at
the time was the 7th largest quake since
Richter invented the scale in 1901.
After surviving the quake, we
based ourselves on Nias island for
a year, volunteering for LEAP (Local
Empowerment Assistance Project). Their
main project was the coconut oil factory,
used to generate income for other projects
(mainly for education). On returning to
Australia, we decided to continue our
support by importing the coconut oil to
Australia to generate further sales.
This started with the business FTL
Trading (Feel The Love) named after our
fundraising effort at the time of the quake,
where we imported the oil into Australia
in 2007. At this time, I was working part
time as a Geography teacher at Nambour
Christian College, whilst attempting to
build our business.
Initially, it was very challenging and quite
a steep learning curve for us as we learnt
about importing, sales, accounting,
distribution, decanting, label designing
and website management within a very
short timeframe. All requirements that
we needed to educate ourselves in so that
our business could start growing.
What is your product range?
The base product used in the Sococo range
is virgin coconut oil, which comes from a
remote tsunami and quake affected area
of Indonesia. The pure coconut oil is used
for treatment on many health issues as
it is known to be a very sustainable and
healthy source. In addition to this, the
range also includes locally manufactured
coconut oil products, such as soaps,
natural shampoo & conditioner and
lotions.
The range is approved by Socially Green,
an initiative of World Relief Australia to
encourage the sale of environmentally
friendly products that generate significant
income and opportunities for the poor.
The coconut range is well suited as a
Socially Green product as it is grown
without chemicals and is produced in a
pollution free zone on a remote island.
Are there any other ways you
sell your products? Eg online?
Apart from distributing our range and
online selling, we added marketeering
to the list in 2010. For a short period
we attended Eumundi market, however,
we are now based at the Bulcock St,
Caloundra Market and the new Farmers
Market at Kawana Waters. We enjoy being
a stall holder, as we get the opportunity to
meet our customers and receive instant
feedback. This we did not get a chance to
do when only distributing.
What are the challenges that
you have faced and overcome?
There have been lots of challenges.
Obviously, our competitors with
experienced marketing strategies and
established routes for distribution are
one. I guess the thing that keeps us
motivated and inspired is the memory
of the earthquake and the everyday
struggle that exists within their remote
region and the knowledge that we are
making a significant difference to those
people living on the small island. My wife
Johanna, puts it well, ‘Indonesia changed
my definition of a bad day.’ So when
a competitor undercuts us or there is
financial downturn, my focus has been to
ensure that the product and service from
us continues to improve to ensure we
retain support to the small remote island
community.
We sell to a range of shops from Cairns to
Melbourne, and online through
