Your wonderful award winning ice creams and gelatis are a delight for locals and visitors. Having won 85 awards over the past six years it’s no wonder people keep coming back for more. Change of name for landmark Pelican Waters resort PRESIDENTS PEN Happy New Year. I hope that 2013 will be a year of good fortune for you. It’s set to be a very busy year in Caloundra and the team at the Chamber of Commerce has hit the ground running. The summer holidays have been blessed with wonderful weather, which translated into record visitor numbers descending on Caloundra. The Caloundra experience has been enhanced with the Chamber’s six week season of Twilight Markets at Bulcock Beach that have brought Friday night vibrancy along the Esplanade to a whole new level. Twilight Markets are exactly the type of activity that visitors to Caloundra look for and the Chamber runs this activity to support the tourism sector and brand Caloundra. The Chamber is throwing its weight behind the next big event in town, the Australia Day Sunshine Coast Cup, featuring the all new Caloundra Picnic Races. In this edition of Buzz, you will find more information about the race day at Corbould Park. On Saturday 26th January, Caloundra plays host to the main metropolitan race day for Queensland and the exposure we receive all across south east Queensland means dollars into the local business community. In late 2012, the Chamber’s Management Committee made a bold decision in respect of the future management of our very popular markets. Rather than continue to outsource management, the Chamber has created a full time position in-house for the market manager. This will better integrate and support the markets. We were excited to discover Jade Baker during the recruitment and selection process. Jade started with us in January and has now taken over management of our markets. She has an extensive background in festival and event management working with the Woodford Folk Festival and a number of other events in senior management roles, along with buying and styling positions for various well-known retailers in Queensland. We are looking forward to seeing her apply her significant talents to the role. The Chamber also wishes to acknowledge the achievements and great work of Mariannje, the outgoing manager. Mariannje’s care and attention to the markets, particularly in building relationships with stallholders, has created a very vibrant and friendly market. Thank you Mariannje, and our very best wishes to you for your future creative endeavours. If you have any questions or feedback about the Chamber and our activities feel free to email our Executive Officer, Leanne Layfield, via [email protected], or give the office a call on 5492 5977. We look forward to hearing from you and seeing you soon. “The Chamber is throwing its weight behind the next big event in town, the Australia Day Sunshine Coast Cup, featuring the all new Caloundra Picnic Races. The new and very impressive Latronics premises become operational In late 2012, Klaus & Sabine Langner celebrated the opening of their new multi-million dollar, sustainability conscious, world class company headquarters for their electronics manufacturing business Latronics. Situated on the edge of the Moffat Beach Industrial Park, the new site is almost 40 times larger than the company’s original 1985 premises. The building project includes cutting edge sustainability features and its own power plant to not only handle the energy requirements of the business but also feed power back into the electricity grid. Latronics continues to grow with new roles within the business emerging as it expands. New attraction at Aussie World New ride opens at fun park Aussie World has opened a new water play area called Leak’n Logs. The ride is the fourth new attraction in just under two years. Leak’n Logs is jam-packed with unpredictable water surprises including a tin shed that, inside, emulates a typical Queensland electrical storm complete with thunder, wind, lightning and rain. Features also include a walk-through mist shed sitting underneath a leaky corrugated iron water tank, random tipping buckets, intermittent and continuous showers, an outback log waterfall, and irregular dancing water jets. A great way to cool off on a hot summer day. Chamber involved in Economic Development Policy rewrite Tides Waterfront Dining gets national recognition Bill Darby from Rumba Resort and the Chamber’s Management Committee is one of six business representatives on the Sunshine Coast Economic Development Strategy Taskforce. Council are currently re-engineering their economic development policy platform and working with business leaders to understand existing challenges that need to be overcome and where future opportunities lie. The Australian Good Food and Travel Guide announced their coveted 2013 award winners for restaurant food. Congratulations to Tides Waterfront Dining at Bulcock Beach, Caloundra. The AGFG Chef Hat Awards emphasize great food: ingredients, seasonal consideration, flavour, display, aroma, freshness, craft, presentation, and portion size. Another criterion is consistency. Second stage of Bulcock Street upgrade complete New Sunshine Coast Bazaar Stage 2 of the Bulcock Street Streetscape project was open in time for the summer holidays, making Caloundra’s Village Laneway, safer for pedestrians and more vibrant for everyone who uses it. The Village Laneway is used as a main walkway between Bulcock Street and the IGA supermarket and Post Office in Caloundra Village Shopping Centre. On the opposite side of Bulcock Street the laneway runs through to the Cooma Street Bus Interchange and car park. The $600,000 upgrade has improved safety, visual appeal and added new amenities including seating, lighting and a water fountain. Corbould Park Racecourse in Caloundra is the setting for the Coast’s new Saturday artisan market. The Bazaar showcases wonderful examples of the creative energy abounding on the Sunshine Coast and aims to support regional small businesses wherever possible. We got the inside scoop on his favourite places, his best memories and why he is still so in love with the area to this day. What are your favourite memories of growing up in Dicky Beach Caloundra? With job losses and cost cutting in a lot of industries, it is said to be a tough time for business at the moment. What is your perspective on this? Playing Space Invaders at the Glen Ellis café on the corner of Bulcock and Minchinton. Scoffing down a large “Hawaiian” from the Pink Panther pizzeria at the top of town before watching Burt Reynolds in Cannonball Run at the brand new Strand Cinema. Or the excitement when the Anro Asia paid us a visit. Then there was Kings Beach during the Christmas holidays, packed with Brizzo’s and simply the place to be on a summer’s day. While in the winter the old grey land rovers on the beach chasing mullet was a sight to be seen. Do they still do that? When I left more than 15 years ago, retail was struggling, youth unemployment was high and the tourism industry only thrived during the holidays. Nothing has changed. Did you ever see yourself being a renowned news reporter when you were growing up? Simply – no. My first thought of being involved in the media came when a girl I sat next to at high school told me of a friend in radio, so when year 12 finished I enrolled in the AIR-TV course and away I went. After working in Rockhampton as a news reporter for 9 years, is it good to be back on the Sunshine Coast with the new WIN headquarters in Maroochydore? It’s unbelievable! While 10 years in Yeppoon was a great way to bring up two young kids, it isn’t a patch on the coast. Images by Brain Rogers Photographics What appeals to you about Caloundra now? A PICTURE SAYS A THOUSAND WORDS “Branding for a business is paramount. Photos are part of the branding package and are as important as a logo, content, and all other marketing tools.” Good quality photography isn’t a luxury - it’s a necessity for business. sure the photographs you use are both professional and engaging is of great importance. It’s often the very first thing a prospective client or customer sees about your business and so begins their judgement process. Many small business owners don’t realize the importance and value of having photography that best represents their company brand. Images, in the form of still shots or made into videos or slide shows, can be extremely effective in showcasing a company, particularly in these days of social media and online marketing. It may come across as the most simple of concepts, having good images to portray your business, but it is astonishing how many organisations don’t have good photos to represent who they are, what they do and what they stand for. No matter what industry you’re in, good photographs are an essential element for telling your brand’s story and connecting with people via your website and social media channels. Strong branding is crucial and number one for success in a picture-driven society. First impressions are vital when it comes to your website, so making 6 caloundrabuzz I love the beaches at Caloundra, the way the units all look over Kings is something special and no matter how much things change the S.S Dicky remains the same. Bulcock Street remains pretty similar to back then and I love the trees the council planted that are a point of difference to the other Sunshine Coast towns. Where do you see Caloundra heading in the next 10 years? Caloundra is what it is. You can make of it what you will, pretend it’s this and say it’s that, but Caloundra is the gateway to the Sunshine Coast. A simple beach town that has got the best views on the coast and uses the beach better than any other Sunshine Coast town. The new hospital in Kawana is a catalyst project for the region. How do you feel this will benefit the Sunshine Coast in particular Caloundra? It seems, through commercial interest or natural selection, that Kawana west is where the growth will really occur, with the Caloundra South project also housing some growth (for better or worse). The swamp land where they are building the hospital reminds me somewhat of Robina on the Gold Coast. Infrastructure at Kawana means aesthetic places like Moffat, Shelly, Kings, Bulcock and Golden Beaches will only become more sought after. You cover a lot of news stories each day, what is your favourite aspect of news? I’m naturally interested in politics, sports and the weather, believe it or not. I think many people are and that’s why we focus on them on the news. So it’s not so much a job I do as simply an extension of life. I genuinely love it. As a sports enthusiast, what is your favourite sport to watch? I’m writing these answers now as Australia goes about dismantling Sri Lanka. I love the cricket in the summer and the footy in the winter. I also have a love of basketball, although it’s best watched from courtside. Your favourite place in Caloundra is? Dicky Beach without a doubt, although the park at the end of Short Street, Golden Beach, where the old Endeavour used to be is a great place to sit. Your favourite activity in Caloundra is? Watching the pelicans attempting to land in precarious places on a windy day. They are so majestic yet undignified all in the one hit. Anywhere along the Pumicestone Passage is perfect for this. Any problems with the resolution or sizing will make your website look instantly unprofessional, and reflect poorly on your business. How often have you left a website because of the poor quality images or complete lack of images? How many times have you not advertised your business because you don’t have nice images to give to the designer? Even Facebook involves having good quality images. Caloundra based and Chamber of Commerce member Photographer Brian Rogers specialises in corporate images and sees firsthand the benefit to businesses when they invest in professional photos. “Branding for a business is paramount. Photos are part of the branding package and are as important as a logo, content, and all other marketing tools. “A photo shoot for your business can give you quality images that can be used for your website, your Facebook page, advertising and more,” said Brian. It can be the facelift that your business just might need to re-energise your brand and drive some more traffic. AN UNFORTUNATE EXPERIENCE The SCAAN Organisation (Sunshine Coast Access Advisory Network) would like to bring to the attention of the region’s retailers an instance recently experienced by a member of SCAAN. The incident occurred in one of our major shopping precincts and involved a SCAAN member who has cerebral palsy. This member is unable to speak clearly and is in a motorised wheelchair. Our member was on a regular shopping trip and wanted to purchase a gift for a family member. The shop assistant encountered a person in a wheelchair and this person could not communicate efficiently and was immediately treated with suspicion. The shop assistant called security. This action degenerated to a police presence being involved. At no stage did anyone consider the plight of the person who just wanting to purchase an item from the shop. Can you imagine the distress this caused to our member? Guide Dogs Queensland Our member had to leave without her gift and suffered terribly, all without being able to interest anyone about what had happened and no availability of any assistance. STEPPING INTO SOMEONE ELSE’S SHOES Guide Dogs Queensland Did you know that 20% of people living on the Sunshine Coast have some kind of disability? Accessibility is an ongoing issue for people with a disability and one that needs to be addressed by all businesses. This doesn’t just refer to people who are in a wheelchair, however wheelchair access is important. This also refers to people who are blind or vision impaired, don’t have their speech or who are deaf to name a few. The Australian Bureau of Statistics shows that disability affects around one in five Australians. There is still a way to go in terms of equal accessibility for people with a disability, however we are aware that some businesses in Caloundra are making significant steps in the right direction. This can not only help to improve the quality of life for someone with a disability it can also mean reaching out to 20% more customers. There is real need for disability awareness and we think it is time businesses consider how they service the needs of customers with a disability. ABOUT DISABILITY The Disability Services Act 2006 defines disability as: intellectual, psychiatric, cognitive, neurological, sensory or physical impairment, or a combination of these impairments. Disability results in a substantial reduction of a person’s capacity for communication, social interaction, learning, mobility or self-care. A disability must be or is likely to be permanent. Access and equity is concerned with building strong, connected and inclusive communities by acknowledging the inequality of advantages within the community and providing opportunities for active participation in community life for all. This includes, but is not limited to, providing translation services, sensory aids for the vision-impaired, and wheelchair access to buildings, amenities and parking. Council is also an affiliate of the Companion Card Program that enables severely disabled people to participate more fully in community life (Sunshine Coast Council, 2009). 8 caloundrabuzz A community group that is very aware of accessibility issues is Sunshine Coast Access Advisory Network (SCAAN), a group of individuals who aspire to play a key role in supporting the Sunshine Coast to become the most accessible community for both residents and visitors. SCAAN brought to the attention of the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce an unfortunate situation that one of their members experienced on the Sunshine Coast, which can be read opposite this page. Education and awareness are key elements to not having circumstances like this happen in our community. Caloundra Chamber of Commerce committee member and Stockland Caloundra Centre Manager, Shane Munro is well aware of the access issues facing for people with disabilities and liaises regularly with the Chairman of SCAAN Peter Ryan to learn about the improvements that they can make to the centre. “I’m not vision impaired, in a wheelchair, neurologically impaired, etc, so I don’t know what it’s like to not be able to see, walk or communicate clearly, so I ask the people that are affected with disability to teach me what we can do to better their experience not only in our shopping centre but in the community. “We do need to take these customers seriously because their issues are genuine” said Mr Munro. The type of adjustments that Stockland has made over time include better car parking facilities, implemented more pedestrian crossings, fixed pavement gradients, installed RTB (raised tactile and braille signage) to toilet facilities, upgraded mall and car parking lights and widened entrances, to name a few. Some local businesses that offer accessibility for the disabled are Red Hot Chilli Pepper, Tides Waterfront Dining, Smooth Body Spa & Beauty, Gourmet and More, The Golden Beach Tavern, The Events Centre and Australia Zoo. These businesses have established some if not all of these disability friendly services/facilities: wheelchair access, disabled parking, ramps and pathways and friendly assistance if needed. Australia Zoo offers free admission for carer’s and their Safari Shuttle and buses and Crocoseum are wheelchair accessible. For more information on SCAAN contact Chairman Peter Ryan on 07 5492 5755 or email [email protected] Unfortunately this is not an isolated instance as people with disabilities endure this type of ignorance often. In an instance like this everyone loses. The retailer has lost a sale and a customer, and likely many more customers after word gets around in the community. SCAAN would like to work in conjunction with peak bodies like the Chamber of Commerce and Industry to create an awareness campaign to alert the retail industry of this issue, and enable proprietors to assist shop assistants with a training strategy to prevent this type of unnecessary ignorance from happening. 20% of our community is influenced with some type of significant disability, and this is growing rapidly with our ageing population all these people need to shop somewhere and we all use the same currency. The current situation represents a poor business model practice. An inclusive community like the Sunshine Coast Region cannot allow this to happen. It is common to hear of family businesses being taken over by big national business interests. This, however, is not the case with local Caloundra business Sunstate Jewellers, formerly known as Sunstate Wholesale Jewellers, a forty year old family run business. The history behind Sunstate Jewellers is rare and special. Established in Caloundra in 1972, things were run a bit differently in the early years, with the jewellery manufacturing taking place in a house, and games of volleyball and cricket in the backyard for lunch breaks. Now as a major player in the jewellery industry, Sunstate Jewellers has led the way in innovation and manufacturing techniques. It is estimated that over 900,000 rings have been produced and supplied to over 900 independent jewellers throughout Australia and New Zealand. The current Managing Director, Rita Williams, who is also the daughter of founding partner Lester Smiley, has continued to drive the business forward since taking over the reins in 2000. “I see it as critical to continue our family business. There is so much history to it and I love the jewellery industry. Innovation, quality and uniqueness are the key to what we do and it has been since the beginning,” said Rita. C e el b ra t e A u s t ra l i a Da y Changes within the jewellery industry, coupled with the influx of lower grade, imported goods has seen Sunstate Jewellers focus on producing higher calibre jewellery for clients with an appreciation of jewellery that has been crafted to become the heirlooms of tomorrow. It is this market research and awareness that is crucial to the business. The current showroom and production room has undergone renovations in its time, however it is still located at the exact site where it all began 40 years ago in what used to be a house at Moffat Beach. “While there have been many changes and challenges over the 40 year history of Sunstate Jewellers, some things remain constant. That is, a passion for creating beautiful jewellery of exceptional quality, from the finest locally sourced materials, while retaining the honesty and integrity that living and working in a small town brings,” said Rita. Rita is currently in the middle of a two year Gemmological Diploma, which enables her to correctly identify and grade all types of gemmological materials used in the jewellery industry, such as faceted gemstones and organic materials (pearls, coral, amber, ivories etc.). You can visit Sunstate Jewellers in Moffat Beach at “Sunstate House” on the corner of George and Allen Streets at Moffat Beach Business Park, and view some of their spectacular creations or have a meeting to have something specially designed. Kathryn Dearing, General Manager of Oaks Oasis, said the revitalisation of the resort has been well received by locals and visitors to the property since its recent unveiling and would greatly benefit Caloundra’s tourism for years to come. “The positive response we have received from Caloundra locals in addition to the many families, business travellers and groups who have experienced Oaks Oasis’ new look first-hand is a genuine indication of steady growth for our town. The combination of contemporary, affordable, self-contained accommodation under the banner of Oaks Hotels & Resorts means travellers can be confident of a quality holiday. Pair this with a charming, beachside location – in particular the nearby protected waters of Golden Beach that is perfect for a day of swimming, watersports, picnics and bike riding – and the offer is irresistible. “Caloundra’s natural beauty and laidback atmosphere has forever been a draw card for tourists and we hope this investment will play a pivotal role in bringing larger numbers of tourists to the area all year round,” she said. The four star property’s revamp included it’s well known conference room that was classed as a priority during the multi-million dollar transformation. “We understand the importance of having a good space for people to undertake conferences; the refurbished conference room creates a nice environment to do business. We hope that fellow members of the Caloundra Chamber of Commerce will consider our conference room when thinking of a place to meet for business,” said Kathryn. In an outstanding career spanning 18 years, Kathryn has amassed a high-level of expertise across the hotel and hospitality industries in Queensland. Prior to joining the Oaks Group, she held a coveted position as Operations Manager for Mint Resorts & Apartments, overseeing more than 1000 apartments, followed by a notable stint as General Manager of Oceans Mooloolaba Beach Resort. She has also worked for Tourism Noosa for a number of years. Kathryn has been instrumental to Oaks Hotels & Resorts expansion, beginning with the company in 2012 and assuming an integral role as Fast Track Manager. Kathryn recently settled in Caloundra and became General Manager of Oaks Oasis in January of this year; a position that will see her responsible for the overall operation and development of the recently refurbished property. A positive referral from a friend is so much more impactful than any other method. Dr Wheatgrass products have changed many lives for the better and I am so proud of our products because of this,” said Dr Chris. Dr Chris also emphasises the benefit that he has found through outsourcing services in his business and says that although seemingly costly it more than repays it way. Dr Chris Reynolds the Founder and Managing Director of Dr Wheatgrass It is the oldest and most sought after element to any business, positive word of mouth. Social media illustrates this with businesses harvesting positive discussions about their product or service on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and more. Founder of Caloundra based business Dr Wheatgrass, Dr Chris Reynolds knows only too well the benefit of word of mouth as it has grown his business into an international success. In 1995, Dr Chris, who was then a general practitioner in Melbourne, discovered that an extract of wheat grass had quite extraordinary healing powers in a number of medical conditions such as burns, wound healing, fractures and numerous skin conditions. He also noted that many of his patients gained considerably more energy and stamina, and felt generally much better in themselves, after drinking a diluted form of the extract. Dr Chris adapted the wheat grass extract into a cream and liquid super shot to aid healing for all types of ailments. With countless miracle stories of Dr Wheatgrass products, the business has continued to grow organically through word of mouth and is now sold in 12 countries. The Dr Wheatgrass product range has now grown to include a Skin Recovery Cream and Spray that can aid acne, eczema, wound healing, sunburn and much more. A Superbalm Cream that is great for sports injuries, muscle aches and pains, etc, and a liquid Supershot, that is taken internally “Outsourcing frees business proprietors up at work giving time to specialise in what you do best and enhances quality of life with more time for activities outside of work. With outsourcing, the most difficult thing is finding the right people to do the work, but they are out there,” said Dr Chris. Human resources management is the strategic approach to the management of an organisation’s most valued asset – its people. Your people have varying needs for career advancement, support and development to understand and fulfil their roles. Ultimately your team’s performance directly affects your business and its profitability. Managing Director of EastCoast Human Resource Group Michalle Faulkner has experienced the tangible benefit business owners have gained by investing in their staff. Having assisted many Caloundra based businesses over the past eight years, as well as businesses situated in all areas of the Sunshine Coast and beyond, Caloundra holds a special place in Michalle’s heart. A passionate local resident for the past 38 years, Michalle believes strongly in supporting the Caloundra business community and is an advocate for buying locally to support Caloundra and that networking / cross referral should be a major part of our sustainable business strategy - - - that and investing in our staff of course! Navigate the HR minefield with practical advice from Michalle in her new book The People Investment, it’s a must read for every business owner and manager. Dr Chris outsources production, marketing, sales and other particular functions of the business. This method is working very well for him and has worked well in the past. Michalle believes in the mantra of “invest in your people, increase your profit” and her new book is the ‘how to’ guide. It is the ultimate advice for business owners and managers to unlock the key to hiring and firing and getting the most out of your team It is wonderful to have people like Dr Chris based in Caloundra. Not only does it demonstrate that international business can be grown and conducted from right here, it also reiterates that Caloundra is the place to be. Through the formula PEOPLE + PASSION = PROFIT, Michalle argues the fundamentals for people engagement in business today and how this investment can engage each and every team member to consequently drive profits forward. Dr Chris’ life’s mission is to make his wheat grass extract universally available and affordable. He has researched the healing properties of wheat grass for 18 years and has even found his wheatgrass effective for treating leprosy ulcers in India. He has seen firsthand just how powerful his product can be and how it can benefit so many. The People Investment is a refreshing approach to the area of human resources and offers the opportunity to glean a new perspective on team management and leadership embracing a change in the way business leaders manage their teams. Michalle’s top tips for staff investment Getting it right the first time is the best option. Take the time to plan strategies around the recruitment of new staff bringing the right person into your team in the first instance. Having a detailed, compliant and robust system around employing staff is key. Communicate what needs to be done, how often and what expectations you have of your team. Have an acknowledgement system in place that is more than just reviewing salary on an annual basis. Think outside the square, it doesn’t have to cost a bomb. Often it’s just two little words staff wants to hear - Thank You, your efforts are appreciated. Regularly review policies to see where you are and make changes when required. They need to be living, breathing documents. The services will run for 17 weeks, five weeks longer than the 2012 season, which is great news for the region because the seasonal service will include two New Zealand school holiday periods which we hope will result in greater numbers flocking to the Sunshine Coast and enjoying a holiday away in the region. New Zealand is the number one international market for the Sunshine Coast with 76,000 Kiwis flying here in the last financial year. We want you! Sub regional branding Sub regional branding has been introduced to the Sunshine Coast to showcase the regions in a way that helps market to visitors what the region is about. The four regions are: The Playground (The Southern region) The Heart (The Central region) The Soul (The Hinterland) The Lifestyle (The Northern region) Caloundra lies within the Playground which stretches from Caloundra to Kawana. The southern gateway and ‘playground’ of the Sunshine Coast offers fun for the whole family, young and old alike. The individual branding of Sunshine Coast helps promote each region and is a strategy recognised domestically and international, but ultimately it’s a free leverage to help market each different region and let consumers know you are a part of your region. The walk starts (or finishes) at Golden Beach in the south, where you can see historical sites such as Military Jetty which was used for military operations during World War II. Pass through the mangrove boardwalk, an area vital to the marine ecosystem, and meander along the picturesque Pumicestone Passage and perhaps spot a dolphin or two. Follow the path along the spectacular Bulcock Beach boardwalk and take some time to enjoy a coffee on the waterfront. The path continues past Happy Valley and Kings Beach to the heritage listed Kings Beach Bathing Pavilion constructed in 1937. The headland section follows a trail of plaques honouring the lives of those lost in war while Moffat Headland provides a bird’s eye view of the surf break out to sea. Further along is the well-known landmark, the wreck of the SS Dicky that ran aground on Dicky Beach in 1893. Currimundi Lake is the perfect spot to take a refreshing swim or have a bite to eat. The next section of the walk follows the ocean side suburbs of Wurtulla, Bokarina, Warana, and Buddina finishing at the scenic Point Cartwright, famous for its surf breaks. Follow the path that winds through the Point Cartwright Lighthouse Reserve and maybe spot a whale during the migration season from the many vantage points. no booking fee Anthony Johnston Enjoying the Coastal Path at Bulcock Beach The shared walk and cycle path runs from Golden Beach in the south to Point Cartwright in the north, with different sections for those who want to spread out the fun over several days. Australia Zoo Experience Trails The second installment of SCDL’s Experience Trails was launched recently to showcase the unique attractions on the Sunshine Coast. The Attractions Trail and the Nature Trail have been launched, while future trails include Coastal Fun, Food and Wine, Arts and Culture, and Markets. The focus of the Experience Trail campaign involves a heavy emphasis on digital platforms with the aim of engaging the consumer, and to provide insights and ultimately deliver measurable sales. The benefit of this approach is the decision making process can be strategic and transform based on interaction and demand which ultimately customises the marketing program. To spread the word about the Sunshine Coast Experience Trails, a social media photo competition encourages people to take a photo enjoying one of the Experience Trails, and share on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram, where the most liked photo will win $1000 dollars. In a tourism coup, Sunshine Coast Council in partnership with developer Stocklands and Shadforths Civil Engineering have been successful in securing the event for the next five years. Tough Mudder has enjoyed phenomenal popularity since commencing in 2010 with three events in the US. In 2012 there have been more than 460,000 participants in events around the world including “Mudders” in Melbourne and Sydney. Tough Mudder Sunshine Coast, which will be held over the weekend 17 & 18 August, is expected to attract more than 35,000 participants, thousands of more spectators and generate exposure to the region all over the world. Tough Mudder has over 3 million Facebook friends and their website receives more than 800,000 hits every month. To put this into perspective the recent Noosa Triathlon had 8,000 competitors over the triathlon weekend. Council’s strategy has been to “bookend” the Tough Mudder weekend with the 7 Sunshine Coast Marathon series which is held the following Sunday 25 August. Council has produced a video to attract participants to the Tough Mudder event and then challenge them to back up and do one of the races the following Sunday. Between events Mudders and Marathoners are invited to stay, play and spend on the Sunshine Coast. Council is urging local businesses to take advantage of the event and add value to participants by packaging deals, hosting events and thinking outside the box. Council has an agreement for Tough Mudder to happen here on the Coast each year to 2017 inclusive, with an option for a second event in 2014, 2015 and 2016. The boost coming from our own backyard as well, with the survey revealing Australians spent $1.8 billion on visits to the Sunshine Coast in the year to September 2012 which is 10 per cent or $165 million more than the year before. Tourism is one of the four pillars of the State’s economy and the Government is committed to doubling the annual overnight visitor expenditure to $30 billion by 2020. While it is impressive to see Sunshine Coast’s tourism economy thriving as a whole the question needs to be asked; are we seeing these results in Caloundra? I would like your feedback; have small business seen any improvements in the past year? Are you seeing the increase in tourist numbers reflected in your takings or reflected in the amount of customers through your door? This is important for all hotels, motels, shops, coffee and eatery places and other businesses. We need to understand that though the figures look good is this being replicated through your doors? I’m keen to hear your thoughts. Lisa G reen The Business of Colour By Deb Shelton- Carty, Interior designer & colour consultant Scientific tests have proven that after only minutes of exposure to colour, changes occur physically, mentally and emotionally. Top market researchers are currently doing personality and colour scheme profiles to determine the target markets for global name brands. It is big business getting to know your clients reactions to particular colours and how they can boost your sales. Brands communicate through the language of colour, shapes and symbols, which gives us an instant image of a product or service. Universal associations with colour are common with brands such as McDonalds who convey who they are without words. It is suggested that colour alone is a deciding factor for a buyers choice by 65% and can increase brand recognition by 80% (University of Loyola, Colour Study). Colour communicates to us as we interpret our experience or judgment on that particular colour. Businesses want to tap into 20 caloundrabuzz customers’ emotions so determining what brand colours and décor are most appropriate for your shoppers is part of modern day retailing. It is important to get your colours right. When considering colours in your shop or business, for example, think about the emotional, physical and psychological effect that colour can have. Colours also hold different meanings around the globe which is a major consideration for branding e-commerce business and attracting an overseas audience. Studies also show that you only have a few seconds to grab the attention of your customers, so why not keep in mind the meaning and harmony of colours when marketing or branding your business. The colours you choose for your business are very important as it represents who you are in an instant and attracts people to your product or service. She introduces new pieces as often as possible and has a full, vibrant looking stall that instantly draws the eye ... these factors are added reasons for her success. Being able to survive financially as a regular Sunday market stallholder is something to be proud of and Lisa Green has achieved this through dedication, hard work and being ‘smart about it’. Lisa began her art career in sign writing which she didn’t take a liking too. Then she made artwork a hobby whilst being a full time mum. When Lisa sold her home, the buyer asked where they can purchase the artwork that was in the house. This of course was Lisa’s artwork and made her realise there might be a demand for her creations. Some common colour meanings for example are: black for power, white for purity, gold for wealth, blue for trust, red for stimulating, yellow for attention and green for money. Since then Lisa has grown her business to become what it is today; a welloiled, succinct business that has repeat customers year after year. Pick the colour that defines your business or brand best. Send the right message with clever use of colour. “I wanted to create art that goes hand in hand with the tropical Sunshine Coast environment, so that people can bring the outside in, and anyone on a holiday has a lovely piece to remind them of the beautiful Sunshine Coast that they visited” said Lisa. is a lovely working environment with like- Lisa maintains that the reason for her success is to not be greedy. With requests for her artwork to go into galleries or suggestions she could sell her work for a lot more, Lisa opts out of this as her business prospers with the method she has. By keeping her prices reasonable, being versatile, staying positive and bubbly, maintaining a well presented stall, and not getting greedy, Lisa has had the sales follow. vibrant looking stall that instantly draws “I love being at the Markets on Bulcock. I am part of the beautiful original hand crafted products that are available and it minded people” said Lisa. Lisa is innovative with her stall presentation. She introduces new pieces as often as possible and has a full, the eye. Lisa states these factors are added reasons for her success. “I see myself being at the Markets on Bulcock for many years to come. I have so many returning customers who are locals and visitors to Caloundra that come from all over the place. I like the fact that they know where to find me each and every Sunday” said Lisa. Her original artwork starts at $100.
