It seems like the older you get, that time picks up speed just like schussing down a mountain. I just want time to slow down a little! Although I do not prefer hot weather, I can wait for the winter months to roll around. Talking about the ski season, our 2011 trips schedule is now complete with prices, trip details, trip leaders and assistants! Many members and guests attended our summer picnic at Cox Point Park and have already put deposits down on trips. I will be leading the Sun Valley trip, and already the trip is a third full. If you were not able to attend the picnic, contact a trip leader about the trip[s] you‘re interested in. We are still offering ten trips a year, but with limited number of trip participants. Don‘t wait too long to make your decision. Once again it‘s time to renew your Baltimore Ski Club membership. Remember to send your check for your renewal dues and your trip[s] deposit at same time. Don‘t forget to mail before July 17 to take advantage of our early renewal rate. If you enjoy the hot weather, we have quite a variety of social activities for you to enjoy. Get outdoors and play volleyball every Wednesday evening at Oregon Ridge Park, join us for Broadway Melodies by the Baltimore Symphony followed by fireworks under the stars at Oregon Ridge Park on July 24; make a splash at our annual pool party on August 21, come enjoy dinner and a show at the Annapolis Summer Garden Theater featuring ―Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story”. The Ironbirds ballgame and evening dinners are just a few other things that we are doing this summer. Stay posted for details of events through our newsletter, website and social networking sites Constant Contact and Meetup.com. Our monthly ―informal‖ meetings are held at Padonia Station until August. Everyone enjoys getting a bargain! Come and take advantage of their Happy Hour specials and their $2.50 Steak Out Dinner night. I hope to see many of you this summer at one of these social activities. If it gets too hot for you . . . remember, winter is less than six months away. In the mean time don‘t forget to wear plenty of sunscreen! PAGE 3 S C HU S S J U LY /A U G U S T 2 0 1 0 The July, 2010 Baltimore Ski Club happy hour will be the Friday the 16th at the River Watch in Essex. The River Watch has an outdoor deck and a dock (boaters take note). It looks out on the Middle River. The BSC had a happy hour here the last four years and it is very popular. It is located at 207 Nanticoke Road, 410-687-1422. The club members start showing up right after work with an influx starting around sixish. Come out and enjoy the end of a workweek with club members and friends. It is a little out of the way, so here are the Directions: Take I-695 to Essex exit 36 to MD Rte 702 3 miles Left onto Middleborough Rd 0.2 miles name change to Hilltop Ave 0.2 miles Right onto Middleborough Rd 0.6 miles Left onto Nanticoke RD 0.2 miles to River Watch. Bill Shewchuk 410-679-3742 Member Profile: Art & Joyce Roerink Joyce and Art are both longtime members of the BSC, joining the club in the early 1970‘s after moving to this area from Buffalo, N.Y. and North New Jersey, respectively. Art‘s earliest recollection of Joyce was during the old ―BSC Water Ski nights‖ when he saw this long-legged lady wearing, of all things, a WETSUIT, in the middle of summer. Of course, Art didn‘t know about sea nettles then. Art and Joyce were casual acquaintances for years, exchanging a friendly ―hello‖ or sharing a ski run until a BSC trip in 1979 when a condo of guys and a condo of gals all shared a great week in Sun Valley. They all skied together, partied together, hot tuber, dined, and danced together, and by St. Patrick‘s Day they were an ―item‖. They married in 1983 and built a house in Crownsville. Joyce took an EARLY retirement in 1996 from the U.S. Gov‘t as a systems analyst, and Art, an insurance claims investigator, followed a few years later. They have skied extensively throughout New England, the Rockies, as well as Canadian and European destinations. Favorite areas, when asked?? They might disagree on some, but Aspen/Snowmass, Telluride, Steamboat, Jackson Hole and Whistler rank at the top. Unfortunately, Joyce‘s ski career of 42 years has been cut short, courtesy of two knee replacements, although she still accompanies Art on some of his trips every winter. Art eventually wants to pay for his lift tickets with his social security checks. Summers pretty much center around their powerboat, ―Uncle G‖, for fishing, local cruising into town for dinners in Annapolis, and venturing out around the Bay and beyond, including a trip to Bimini that Art took a couple seasons ago. Joyce continues with her decorative painting while Art has recently taken up the frustrating game of golf. They also enjoy traveling, margaritas, and socializing with a great group of friends. Art and Joyce have both held various offices in the club over the 40 years that they have been members of the BSC. They consider the BSC a ―fine organization‖ and have been fortunate to have found not only each other but also many good friends as a result of being in the club. He launched dozens of super hits. He paved the way for Bob Dylan, the Beatles, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen and the ―Stones,‖ all of whom pledge allegiance to him. And, tragically, he inspired the magnificent anthem, The Day the Music Died. In a performance that will not allow you to sit still, Buddy portrays the incredible three year music career of one of rock ‗n roll‘s most important pioneers – Buddy Holly. Killed in a plane crash on February 3, 1959 at age 22 -along with Ritchie Valens and ―Big Bopper‖ J.P. Richardson -Buddy Holly was just beginning the second ―post-Crickets‖ phase of his incredible career. It was hot and humid, but a breeze off the river made it a pleasant day. The Club rented the covered pavilion next to the play ground. Parking is convenient with a lot right next to the pavilion. The pavilion overlooks the water with a great view. The shores were filled with fisherman hoping to catch the big one for bragging purposes. Zipping back and forth in the water all afternoon were jet skiers enjoying the Sunday afternoon. Our professional cooks, Sharon Albaugh and Terry McAnally, slaved over a hot barbecue grill all day to feed us hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken kabobs. Thanks again to Janet Stout (that is her in the photo) for the homemade burgers; they were excellent. And thanks to Gene Ossie for arriving early at the park to set up the grill. Gene‘s wife, Marlene, helped by slicing up the onions, tomatoes and lettuce for our burgers and dogs. Rounding off the food was a delicious fruit salad which helped cool us down on a hot day, cole slaw, potato salad, pickles and various chips. We were also treated to homemade deviled eggs made by Eileen Karzmarek. Thanks for bringing the yummee eggs. Sorry that Eileen‘s husband, Trip Committee Chair, Dave Karzmarek was unable to attend the picnic. For dessert, there were several flavors of cookies, including homemade chocolate chips made by our Club Treasurer, Mark Jones. In addition to the fruit salad, there were plenty of drinks to cool us down. Beer, wine, sodas, lemonade, and ice tea. And we owe a big ―thank you‖ to Christopher Pukalski who organized the event. Mark Chapman helped out in delivering all the delicious food to Cox‘s Point Park. Everyone enjoyed visiting with Club members (new and old), friends and family. We welcomed Helen Petrich, Don Marsteller, and John Hopkins, who will be joining the BSC on its non-ski trip to London. Spaces still available so be sure to sign up soon. Also joining the Club were a few cold weathered and feathered friends. Mark Jones and Sharon Albaugh decorated the pavilion for our picnic, hanging a skiing penguin flag from the rafters. We had a mesh snowman skiier decorating one of the picnic tables until the wind knocked him over one too many times. Lisa and Rob Black joined us at the picnic as well and have plans on traveling to Steamboat with the Club this coming ski season. Our most popular guest at the picnic was Liz Chapman‘s grandson, Quincy, but just call him Q. He spent the afternoon happily bouncing in his Precious Planet Blue Sky Jumperoo. It was a relaxing day with some Club members keeping cool under the pavilion while others ventured out into the sun. Some brought table games to amuse the crowd. Our president, Mike Jones and his wife, Gloria, brought tridominoes. Gloria and her sister-in-law, Darla, played the first game, with V.P. Beth Muscedere stepping in for the second game. Dominoes may be a child‘s game, but when you have to match three sides at once, it becomes quite challenging. When asking Beth who won the game, she answered that no one was really keeping track, just having fun. That seems to be what everyone was doing that day. Next in line for traditional BSC events is the Annual Pool Party at Janet Stout‘s house. Yes, that means more delicious hamburgers. Mark your calendars. In addition, the Club has lots of fun and exciting events scheduled for this summer. Keep checking the website, read your Schuss, and look for email reminders about all the events.
