‘O Sole Mio
Che bella cosa na jurnata ‘e sole,
n’aria serena doppo na tempesta!
Pe’ ll’aria fresca pare gia’ na festa
Che bella cosa na jurnata ‘e sole.
Ma n’atu sole
cchiu’ bello, oi ne’.
‘O sole mio
sta ‘nfronte a te!
‘O sole, ‘o sole mio
sta ‘nfronte a te,
sta ‘nfronte a te!
Quanno fa notte e ‘o sole se ne scenne,
me vene quase ‘na malincunia;
sotto ‘a fenesta toia restarria
quanno fa notte e ‘o sole se ne scenne.
Ma n’atu sole
cchiu’ bello, oi ne’.
‘O sole mio
sta ‘nfronte a te!
‘O sole, ‘o sole mio
sta ‘nfronte a te,
sta ‘nfronte a te!
In 1898, Giovanni Capurro wrote the words to ’O Sole Mio and asked Eduardo Di Capua
to set them to music. The song went on to become one of the most famous songs of
all time. It was one of Enrico Caruso’s favorites, and has subsequently entered every
opera singer’s repertoire.
Funiculi Funicula
Funiculì, Funiculà is a famous Neapolitan song written by Italian journalist Peppino Turco and
set to music by Italian composer Luigi Denza in 1880. It was composed to commemorate
the opening of the first funicular cable car on Mount Vesuvius. The 1880 cable car was later
destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 1944.
Aieressera, oì Nanninè, me ne sagliette,

Addò ‘stu core ‘ngrato cchiù dispietto
Farme nun pò!
Addò lo fuoco coce, ma si fuie

E nun te corre appriesso, nun te struie

Jamme, jamme ‘ncoppa, jamme jà,
Jamme, jamme ‘ncoppa, jamme jà,

‘ncoppa, jamme jà, funiculì, funiculà!

Volare
Nel blu dipinto di blu (English: In the blue, painted blue), is a song recorded by Italian
singer-songwriter Domenico Modugno. Written by Franco Migliacci and Domenico
Modugno, it was released in Europe as a single in February, 1958. Later that year it was
recorded in America by Dean Martin as Volare (To fly).
Volare, oh oh
Cantare, oh oh oh oh
Let’s fly way up to the clouds
Away from the maddening crowds
We can sing in the glow of a star that I know of
Where lovers enjoy peace of mind
Let us leave the confusion and all disillusion behind
Just like bird of a feather, a rainbow together we’ll find
Volare, oh oh
E contare, oh oh oh oh
No wonder my happy heart sings
Your love has given me wings
Mentre il mondo pian piano spariva lontano laggiu
Una musica dolce suonava soltanto per me
Volare, oh oh
E cantare, oh oh oh oh
No wonder my happy heart sings
Your love has given me wings
Nel blu, dipinto di blu
Felice di stare lassu
Nessun Dorma
An aria from Puccini’s opera Turandot, it is one of the best known tenor arias in all
of opera. It is sung by Prince Calaf, who falls in love at first sight with the beautiful but
cold Princess Turandot. However, any man who wishes to wed Turandot must first answer
her three riddles; if he fails, he will be beheaded. In the act before the aria is sung, Calaf
correctly answered the riddles. Nonetheless, she recoils at the thought of marriage to him.
Calaf offers her another chance by challenging her to guess his name by dawn. If she does
so, she can execute him; but if she does not, she must marry him. The cruel and emotionally
cold princess then decrees that none of her subjects shall sleep that night until his name is
discovered. If they fail, all will be killed.
As the final act opens, it is now night. Calaf is alone in the moonlit palace gardens. In
the distance, he hears Turandot’s heralds proclaiming her command. His aria begins with
an echo of their cry and a reflection on Princess Turandot. It ends with Calaf pleading with
the stars to set, which will bring the new day, and his victory. Here he exclaims “Vincero!”
Nessun dorma! Nessun dorma!
Tu pure, o, Principessa,
nella tua fredda stanza,
guardi le stelle
che tremano d’amore
e di speranza.
Ma il mio mistero è chiuso in me,
il nome mio nessun saprà!
No, no, sulla tua bocca lo dirò
quando la luce splenderà!
Ed il mio bacio scioglierà il silenzio
che ti fa mia!
Dilegua, o notte!
Tramontate, stelle!
Tramontate, stelle!
All’alba vincerò!
vincerò, vincerò!
