Off Road DL 2009_MB:Layout 1 12/01/2009 16:14 Page 1 Your tyres: Fulfilling a critical role in your safety. Tyres are the only points of contact between your motorcycle and the ground. Here are some tips that will help preserve the quality and performance of your tyres. TYRE SELECTION The choice of a tyre that does not strictly conform to the original-equipment specifications for a particular bike must be validated by a professional technician. Never use a tyre that is not inflated to the correct pressure, in excess of its indicated speed rating, or with a load that exceeds its load index. It is illegal to ride on a public highway with tyres that are marked NHS (Not for Highway Service) or “FOR COMPETITION USE.” INSPECTION Tyres must be inspected on a routine basis for irregular wear patterns, which can be an indication of incorrect inflation pressure, overloading or mechanical problems. An underinflated or overloaded tyre that is ridden for a prolonged period may suffer irreversible damage that can have serious consequences, even if the tyre is returned to correct inflation pressure. Tyres should be inspected regularly, with particular attention paid to: - the tread area, to detect the presence of debris, cuts, deterioration or irregular wear patterns;sidewalls, to detect impact damage, cuts, cracking or abnormal deformation; - the bead area, noting any trace of abrasions or rim damage. If you suspect any problems, your tyres should be inspected internally and externally by a professional technician. MIXING TYRES All recommendations and precautions are based on equipping the motorcycle with MICHELIN tyres both front and rear. Antoine Meo Husqvarna CH Racing Michelin Enduro 2 rider these factors can have a detrimental effect on tread life; a combination of several factors will cause significant wear. INFLATION Correct inflation is essential to the tyres’ safety and durability. It is also a major influence on the motorcycle’s handling, both in a straight line and when cornering. Riding on underinflated tyres can cause premature wear, irreversible damage to the casing and, possibly, a catastrophic deflation. Tyres lose air gradually. It is essential to check pressure before every ride. If the pressure is checked during or after a ride, the tyres will be hot, which will increase the indicated pressure. Never bleed air from a hot tyre. If the pressure reading is lower than the recommended pressure, air must be added to the tyre. Keep in mind that the indicated pressure of a hot tyre can be as much as 0.3 bar higher than the recommended cold pressure. After checking pressures, don’t forget to reinstall the valve cap, which provides added protection for the valve mechanism. TRIAL* Recommended pressures: Front: 0.4 bar Rear: 0.35 bar Minimum pressures: Front: 0.35 bar Rear: 0.3 bar *Pressures should be adjusted depending on type of terrain, weather conditions, the motorcycle’s power output, and the type of riding. MOUNTING/ DEMOUNTING The mounting and demounting of tyres should be undertaken only by a professional technician; improper handling of the tyre can damage it and put your safety at risk. When replacing a tyre, the installer must confirm the following: WEAR - condition of the wheel and The primary function of the tyre; tread is adhesion with the - that the replacement tyre is road or trail. As tyre wear the correct size, as specified progresses over time, the by the motorcycle manufactyre’s adhesion decreases; turer; consequently, you should - that the speed rating and adapt your riding style to this load index of the replacereduced traction (by reducing ment tyre are correct for the speed, etc.). Over time, this pressure decreases, indicating the need for replacement. •The durability of MICHELIN BIB-MOUSSE may vary considerably, depending on the type and severity of use. For example, durability in motocross use will be less than in enduro use. •Before riding at high speeds for long periods. the MICHELIN tyre and BIB-MOUSSE should be warmed up gradually by riding at moderate speeds. •When fitting MICHELIN BIBMOUSSE, it must be lubricated using only MICHELIN BIB-MOUSSE mounting gel. Each BIBMOUSSE is supplied with 1 tube of mounting gel and additional tubes can be purchased as required.
