At the end of the 19th century, the lady of the manor usually did. The garden, especially the kitchen garden, was the woman’s domain and responsibility. So, when Joseph Stephens arrived in a landau in 1881 with his wife at Huseby Bruk and the elegant manor just south of Växjö, Elisabeth Stephens designed the park in English and German style – stunningly beautiful and tended by the caring hand of a woman. At the time, a large kitchen garden was also a status symbol. A manor with style should be self-sufficient in vegetables, root vegetables, fruit and berries. A number of different varieties of the same species were often planted to ripen at different times – from Easter preferably into early autumn. The gardens at Huseby were admired in their time, and the same gardens will once more attract attention in summer 2012. All winter, gardener Sara Arvidsson has prepared for the theme year ‘Elisabeth’s Garden’. In the greenhouses, Sara has carefully tended the plants that will be planted out in the park in spring – a task of great responsibility. Many of the plants are progenies of the individual plants that Elisabeth Stephens bought and put into the soil more than a hundred years ago. The park at Huseby is unique. The grounds have been cultivated and managed without interruption since the late 1880s and preserved in form and plant material! The renovation of the kitchen garden at Huseby began ten years ago. With the help of pictures, shopping lists and maps from archives, the vegetable beds have been recreated according to Elisabeth Stephens’s designs. A garden is a living thing, and the kitchen garden has undergone extensive renovation. Elisabeth Stephens would probably have been as proud if she had seen the greenery in her kitchen garden as Sara Arvidsson is of having planted beans, artichokes and other things that belong in a manor house kitchen. Even Huseby’s fowl are back. This summer, the octagonal henhouse will have new inhabitants, and peacocks will strut along the gravel paths. Enjoy the summer garden at Huseby and take the opportunity to buy fruit, berries and vegetables. If you have your own garden, you can buy some of Elisabeth and Sara’s organically grown plants. The decorations were created with a Småland feel, and even the opening date was chosen with care: 11/11/11! Jönköping’s new meeting place for dramatic art, the Spira Culture Centre, brings together art and design on many levels. Long before Spira opened by the shore of Lake Munksjön in Jönköping on 11 November last year, it had attracted attention for its beautiful and spectacular architecture. It became clear early on that the culture centre would become a new landmark. Star architects Gert Wingårdh and Jonas Edblad designed Spira with lots of space and glass. Already in the foyer, visitors are met by Ingegerd Råman’s imaginative glass art, the Spira lamp, and on the façade, no less than 6000 square metres of glass open up to the light – with impressive vistas of nature. The inspiration was of course taken from Småland’s traditional craft of glass-blowing. At the same time, the province’s characteristic magical forests are reflected in the clean pine walls, and in the concert hall, the audience can look up at the magical starry Småland sky in the ceiling. The restaurant menu with its local produce is just as characteristic of Småland, and Spira’s multi-awardwinning chef Tommy Myllymäki puts together a food culture as an important part of the overall experience. Outside, the culture centre also gets people talking – literally. The playful sound flowers ‘Resonance’ are signed by Milo Lavén. The large-scale interactive work of art with inbuilt headphones glows and pulsates in the evening and at night in time with the footsteps of passers-by. Every flower also has its own characteristic sound – so if several people work together, it is possible to create a whole orchestra of echoes and rhythms. Landmark, food culture, art experience! But it is as a culture centre that Spira will elevate dramatic art in Jönköping. And there is plenty of space for performers – with 15,000 square metres, the architects have put in no fewer than four stages. Here, Smålands Musik och Teater will put on 800 performances and concerts a year. Calling everyone who loves drama, music, comedy – and art! See page 39. We found the bamboo fishing rod in the shed and dug up the worms in the compost by the gooseberry bush. Now all our eyes are on the float out there among the leaves of the water lilies. Then suddenly! The expected, yet unexpected. The bite! A splash, the float disappears into the water. A desperate grip on the rod as it bends. A quick glimpse of a dark tail fin... the fish looks big. Is it still on the hook? Dad, get the net! A fishing adventure in Småland can start with the whole family on a freshly tarred jetty, from a rowing boat on a tranquil lake, trolling on Lake Vättern or angling with a fly in flowing water. Småland not only offers a wide range of fishing for beginners and anglers, it also has a wide range of fish species. Perch, pike and pike-perch are typical fish. The chances of catching a bream, eel, salmon or sea trout are also good. The lakes, rivers and streams in Småland are clean – and full of fish – but no holiday adventure can match the anxious wait for the float, the magic bite and frying your own perch for lunch. 8 | www.visitsmaland.se Everyt hin g ab ou t fis hin g on yo ur mo bile ! Nature’s beauty Beautiful nature leaves no one unmoved – an old twisted oak, a meadow bursting with dandelion flowers, a pillar hall of fir trees in a magical fairytale forest. Mysticism and silence, or the sound of a black woodpecker pecking away laboriously in the distance or the cricket’s entertainment by your feet... the beautiful music of nature. p.45 Many of nature’s wonders can be found in our exciting nature reserve. Sometimes wild landscapes, often easily accessible. Here and there, Småland’s primitive rock rises boldly above the spruce forest, and roaring waterfalls boast their natural power. The old forest has aged gracefully, and the ravines whisper an even older story. Strange phenomena. On a cycle you can head for new horizons. Choose your own routes or marked paths. Follow a babbling brook and stop for a break at a lake with swimming to recharge your pedal power. Or, if you prefer, put on your walking boots and go on foot. Experience the natural rhythm of life – the ultimate nature feeling. There is something special about unspoilt nature with its original beauty – just the way you’ll find it in Småland. That’s why cheesecake will always be known as Småland cheesecake and isterband (coarsely ground smoked sausages) will always be called ‘Småland isterband’. The recipes are passed down the generations and prepared with pride by chefs at gourmet restaurants and small cafés. The raw produce is taken direct from the forests and lakes – and don’t be surprised if you find other local specialities on the menu. The affection for nature’s larder can be seen in delicious mushroom dishes and, maybe above all, in the lingonberries. No other province is so strongly associated with lingonberries as Småland. Here, pots of cooked and uncooked lingonberry jam are served with main courses and desserts – kitchen traditions we call it. Maybe it’s just that the sour, fresh taste goes so well with Småland delicacies like moose fillet. This is Småland’s soul on a plate. Local produce is alw ays at the centre! Vrigstad cheesecake A unique crispbread shop Cheesecake has had its given place at every Småland party for centuries. Often several cheesecakes, if it is a bring-your-own party: golden brown top with a sweet smell of almonds, topped with cream and jam! What should a real cheesecake taste like? Well, try Vrigstad’s cheesecake – just like a home-made one with a taste of Småland. Welcome to the 1950s! Fiket i Gränna is a genuine café with Elvis on the jukebox and its own chocolate biscotti. But, the most famous are, of course, the crispbreads: Braheknäcke, Rymmarknäcke and the square Grännaknäcke – and you can see the bakers as they work through the large windows facing the street. How about that! Restaurang & Café Timjan The closeness to nature is striking. Timjan is beautifully set in the forest outside Vrigstad. So, the choice of raw produce in the kitchen and café is natural – with herbs, vegetables and berries from the forest and its own garden, and meat from suppliers who guarantee ‘happy animals’. Discover the interactive exhibition on the Kingdom of Crystal’s origin, evolution and future. In unique film clips you will meet glass artists and glass workers who talk about the Kingdom of Crystal, glass and its significance. Travel back in time to the 1960s, when glass took shape in an entirely new and unexpected way and feel the fresh winds of change. In the museum’s various thematic displays for children and adults, you can get acquainted with the Kingdom of Crystal’s most secret stories. Meet Boda personality Albin with his high hat or glassblower Ruben and marvelat their captivating tales. Moreover, in the museum’s blowing room you can design and blow glass of your own together with our skilled glassblowers. The museum also displays the very latest in glass art, with glass pieces signed by Åsa Jungnelius, Helena Kågebrand, Ingalena Klenell and others. 66 | www.visitsmaland.se Storgatan 5, Boda glasbruk 0471-249360 • www.theglassfactory.se No. of beds / No. of rooms 96 / 48 Restaurant Number of pitches yes No. of beds 80 No restaurant 34 no Limited restaurant services available No. of beds + extra beds 6+3 (yes) No. of beds / No. of cottages 160 / 22 Conference facilities yes No conference facilities Open all year all year season (yes) Open during the season, also bookings other times (all year) Indoor pool Pinball / Video games Heated pool Crown fishing Open-air/sea-water pool Canoe rental Children’s pool Boat rental Sauna Bicycle rental Main assembly room Prep. jogging track Children’s playroom Windsurfing Map coordinates – refer to the inset map on the road map Playground Boule Ball games Baby-sitting service Tennis Guest harbour Minigolf Boat ramp E3 The farms with logos are quality inspected and classified by Bo på Lantgård, the Swedish farm accommodation association. www.bopalantgard.se Culture Wilderness campsite 14 yes / no Limited conference facilities no Open during the season VM Campsite standard acc. to SCR. www.scr.se Number of cottages available for booking, with or without self-catering.
