Newsletter 11.03.16 - Mamre Anglican School
Friday 11th March 2016
Dates for your diary…
From the Principal’s Desk
What a wonderful week of activities our students have experienced this
week at Mamre. A very hot day at our athletics carnival on Monday at
Blacktown, but our students did us proud competing with enthusiasm
and pride. Many students have represented the school at basketball and
futsal this week and there were some excellent results from those teams
also. Principal’s chapel on Thursday where we introduced our new
chaplains to the school and our first Charity Day for 2016, Flynn house
Charity Day, Crazy Hair Day, supporting the Leukemia Foundation.
I would like to acknowledge the tireless, enthusiastic and diligent work
of Mr Nathan Asher, Mamre’s chaplain for many years. Mr Asher has
joined the chaplaincy team at Sutherland Shire Christian School. This
week I have appointed two chaplains to Mamre, Mr Michael Foxall and
Mrs Dimity Statheos. It will be a shared role, both working part time.
Both Michael and Dimity will bring a warmth and depth to our
chaplaincy program, will lead chapels, teach Christian Studies and
provide opportunities for community activities for families, similar to the
activities run by Mr Asher.
I am sure that our Mamre community will welcome them with the same
graciousness and warmth as you did when I started earlier in the year.
This week at chapel I reminded students, staff and parents about being
passionate advocates for Christianity. We looked at the fruits of the
spirit and recommended them to adopt these characteristics into our
daily lives, for these actions have eternal consequence, please God and
make for a happier and more cohesive school.
Mrs Cathie Graydon
Principal
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness, self-control; against such things
there is no law. 24Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified
the flesh with its passions and desires. Galatians 5:22-24

Meet the Chaplains
Michael Foxall is extremely excited about joining Mamre! It is his heart to see students
grow emotionally, academically and spiritually on the foundation of strong relationships in
Christ. He is thrilled about upholding the Christian values of the school and working
closely with the staff, students and families.
Since 2009 he has been involved with Campus Crusade for Christ as a sports chaplain
based out of Sydney University, specifically working with the cricket and rugby clubs –
combining both his passions: Christ and sport!
He obtained a Bachelor of Theology with a strong focus on pastoral care and counselling
and has been a member of Holy Trinity Anglican Church for 17 years. Most recently, he
has obtained a Diploma in Secondary Education in Biblical Studies and Studies of
Religion.
He had the honour of representing Australia in wheelchair sport and competing all over
the world in wheelchair hockey.
On his nights off you will find him at the movies, supporting the Wanderers or spending
time with his two gorgeous nephews.
He has been happily married to his lovely wife Amanda for over 3 years.
Dimity Statheos grew up on Sydney's Northern beaches and studied at the Sydney
Conservatorium of Music majoring in Violin. She has played professionally as a violinist
for 25 years and then studied a Bachelor of Arts majoring in Sociology at Macquarie
University. Further study included a Diploma from Sydney Missionary and Bible College
and more recently a Master of Teaching from Western Sydney University.
She has been married to George for 16 years and has 2 children, and as a family they
love travelling. You will often find her in any cafe that does a decent double ristretto flat
white. Her passion is to tell others about Jesus and see lives changed.
It has been a wonderfully busy and exciting time in the Junior School during the past 2 weeks. The term is in full swing with
lots of activities to keep the children engaged and they are all going very well with their learning. I am delighted with how
the term is progressing. Keep up the great work, children.
It was wonderful to see so many of you on Monday at the Year 3-12 Athletics Carnival. All competitors performed extremely
well in very trying conditions and it was a fabulous event for all. Well done to all staff who ran such a terrific carnival.
Today was also a very special day in the life of the Junior School. For the first time we held our Early Learning Centre
(including our 3 year old children) to Year 2 Athletics Carnival. What a special event it was! The children loved the variety of
activities and events and the chance to ‘compete’ against their peers in a fun, friendly atmosphere. The mixture of House
Shirts and Sport Uniforms provided colour, excitement and added to the event. Thank you to the many parents who came
along today to enjoy the fun. My sincere thanks to all staff involved for creating many special memories in the lives of our
young children.
Today, as a whole school, we held our first House Charity Fundraising Event for 2016 joining in the World’s Greatest Shave.
All students at Mamre had the chance to wear Crazy Hair to raise money for such a worthwhile cause. Well done to all
students of Flynn House for leading the way today.
I would like to make special mention of the Junior School Flynn House Captain, Chloe Bell. At recess in front of the Junior
School, Chloe with the help of a hairdresser had her own hair cut. The purpose of Chloe having her hair cut was to raise
funds to make a wig for a child suffering from cancer. Chloe’s leadership, initiative and selfless act was an inspiration to all
her peers. Chloe certainly provided a wonderful example of one of the School Core values – Service to Others. Good on you
Chloe.

National Young Leader’s Day
On the 29th February 2016 the Junior School Leaders of Mamre Anglican School went to the National Young Leader’s Day at
Allphones Arena. The National Young Leaders Day is an annual event founded in 1997 to develop strong leadership values
amongst young Australians. The Program consists of keynote talks, multimedia presentations and interactive learning that
seeks a range of specific outcomes for young people who aspire to lead themselves & others well.
The range of speakers at this year’s event was very impressive. The first speaker of the day was Nathan Dubsy Want. Nathan
wanted us to have fun but also wanted us to take the responsibility of being a leader seriously. He got us to stand up and do
boot camp aerobics which was a lot of fun.
Next we heard from a children’s author, followed by a lady whose job it is to make and taste chocolate, and an employee of
Google. Each speaker spoke well and impressed upon us how important it is to follow our passion throughout life.
We were further inspired by Ben Austin who spoke to the audience about the importance of persistence and resilience in
life. Ben is an Australian Elite Athlete and is a disability swimmer. Ben has competed in 3 Paralympic games winning 3 Gold,
4 Silver and 3 Bronze Medals. He has also competed in two Commonwealth games winning 3 Gold Medals. Ben impressed
upon as that as leaders, we are to inspire others.
The final speaker of the day was a wonderful treat for all leaders as we heard from current Police Commissioner Andrew
Scipione. Despite being in charge of one of the oldest and largest police organisations and one of the biggest in the English
speaking world, Commissioner Scipione impressed upon us to take care of the small details in leadership.
Overall, the day was a wonderful experience for us as Junior School Leaders. We wish to take back to School what we
learned on the day to set an example for all Junior School students.

Year 10 Work Experience
Year ten students will be doing work experience in term 4
from Monday 14th November until Friday 25th November.
This may seem a long way off but students need to start
planning now and making enquiries with prospective
employers.
They may go to one employer for two weeks or do a week at
two different places. As a general rule they cannot work
with their parents.
All year 10 students have been given the paperwork for this.
Should they lose this paperwork or need an additional copy,
as they wish to go to two places, it can be downloaded from
Google classroom. A Google classroom has been set up just
for work experience. Your student has the code for this.
I have also put some details up about places which will take work experience students in the areas of
landscaping and surveying. I hope to be able to add to this when, and if, more become available.
However, it is the student’s responsibility to organise their placement.
2016 is looking to be a truly exciting year for Music here at Mamre, in particular, for the Junior
School. All students will have the opportunity to engage in Music appreciation, whether it is
learning instruments in class throughout Years 3-8, in new instrumental programs, or in
peripatetics. I believe it is important our students use their gifts to serve God and the greater
community, and music provides many opportunities for us as a school to do that!

Junior School Curriculum Corner
Welcome to the Curriculum Corner of this week’s newsletter. Here, we will feature great ideas,
teaching strategies and innovations from our wonderful Junior School staff. You might even
see some awesome work samples from our students.
This week, we visit Year 1H and Mr Hunt. This talented teacher has been using Edward de
Bono’s ‘Thinking Hats’ to help his students to read texts critically and write persuasively.
This is a popular framework used amongst teachers. This article has been contributed by
Mr Hunt.
1H has been looking at how to persuade fairy tale characters to do the right things. It can often
be a hard thing for such characters to understand that what they are doing is wrong. When Jack
was stealing things from the giant in the story of “Jack & the Beanstalk”, what risks did he face?
How could it harm themselves and others?
Therefore, 1H has been constructing writing pieces to change their minds. We have also been
using Edward de Bono's 'Thinking Hats'. These have been used to help students of Year 1H
navigate through the writing process and think of great ideas. Here are some examples of
students using their thinking hats. Summer received the 'blue hat' and she had to organise our
class’ writing in an orderly process. Ebony received the 'black hat' and she worked on the
dangers faced by Goldilocks. Finally, Patrick received the 'white hat' for thinking about evidence
that supported our argument that Jack was actually in danger when stealing things from the
giant.

After School Care Program
Program Update
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
What a week it has been here at the program for the children and educators! Last week the children spent their days cooking up a storm. We
started off the week by making mini-pizzas, then D.I.Y Mamre McMuffins, and finally on Friday the children made home-made Nut-Free
Weetbix Slice… YUMMY!!!
The educators at OSHC would also like to introduce our very own travelling recipe book. Parents are more than welcome to take the book
home, cook something with your little one and share your family recipe or specialty with other parents in our program. You can decorate the
page how you like e.g. Add pictures of you and your little one cooking, or simply stick in a recipe that was whipped up that evening 
Another highlight from last week was our Junior and Senior OSHClub rookies. Congratulations Aydin (JNR) and Bailey (SNR) for being chosen.
These two have been fantastic at our program and have been such fantastic role models.
Lastly, a special mention to our special guest, Aunty Norma Shelley. Aunty Norma is an Indigenous Elder that took the time out of her day to
educate the children. We are forever grateful for her kindness and willingness to speak with our kids and share her stories. and Indigenous
belongings.
For our new families joining our OSHClub community: Our centre is located in the high school section right opposite the hall and next to the
field (astro turf), we are in the second demountable. If there are any queries you are most welcome to drop by our centre for a tour and/or
information booklets. Our staff are more than happy to assist. We are available in our room from 2:30pm onwards or via our OSH mobile: 0401
754 866. We look forward to meeting you and hearing back from you soon.
Kind regards,
Julia and Cheila.
Next Week’s Activities:
