As we start a new year, God has inspired me to begin with a series titled “God Given.” The central message of this series is: YOUR LIFE IS GOD GIVEN YOU HAVE A GOD GIVEN PURPOSE YOU HAVE A GOD GIVEN CHANCE TO LIVE OUT A GOD GIVEN LIFE YOUR LIFE IS GOD GIVEN—Your life is not your own. God is our creator. You may try to live as if this is not relevant but you ultimately cannot. Life is simply not your creation. Life itself is a gift from God. Many fight against this as if they are trying to break free of bonds that are holding them back. Knowing that you are God’s special creation can bring freedom. It can give you the foundation upon which you can build your life. You are not an accident of nature. You are not a mistake. Your life is God’s gift. YOU HAVE A GOD GIVEN PURPOSE—You are God’s invention. God knows you inside and out. If anyone has an inside track on your destiny, it is God. If you think you know yourself better than anyone, think again. When you are born, everyone, including yourself, is a stranger whom you must get to know. Many people spend their whole life trying to “find themselves.” God knew you before you were born. YOU HAVE A GOD GIVEN CHANCE TO LIVE OUT A GOD GIVEN LIFE—Your chance to live a God Given Life is given by God. God’s grace through Jesus opens the way to the God Given Life. Living the God Given Life means living in the knowledge that God gives us life, the purpose for living, and the means by which to live life in His fullness. This translates to a life of faith, surrender, and confident reliance. The GOD GIVEN series will afford us the opportunity to recognize what God has given us and how we can put those gifts into action. We will look at Spiritual Gifts and how God imparts in them both the calling and the means to serve. We will take aim at living in the providence of God so we may be at liberty to tithe and give to the Lord’s work above and beyond. We will also look at how God has put us together with personality and passion that make us the prefect person to fulfill the purpose God has for us. I expect it to be an exciting exploration of faith and the generosity of God. a n n o g s It’ be a 3 Over 50’s The Over 50’s will meet on January 9 at 11:30 in the church fellowship hall for a tureen lunch. We will be planning our activities for the year so bring lots of ideas. Where’s your Ebenezer? The words of the well-known hymn “Come, Thou Fount of Every Blessing” were written in 1757 by pastor and hymnist Robert Robinson. While most of the lines resonate with singers and listeners, the reference to “Ebenezer” may prove confusing: Here I raise my Ebenezer; Here by thy great help I’ve come. In 1 Samuel 7:12, Ebenezer, Hebrew for “stone of help,” is what Samuel names a stone memorial he erects to God after Israel wins a battle against the Philistines. (Similarly, the name Eliezer appears several times in scripture, meaning “My God, [my] help.”) If you were to “raise [your] Ebenezer” in memory of a place where God helped you, where might it stand? Maybe it’s at the scene of a car accident you survived, or on a college campus where your faith was challenged or molded. Maybe it’s a peaceful spot in nature where you sensed the Spirit’s presence. Or maybe it’s simply in your heart, where a figurative Ebenezer monument can remind you of the Lord’s constant care and love. Reactivating “Kitchen Committee” Purpose: To oversee the safety, organization, and cleanliness of the church kitchen facility. The plan is to have an organizational meeting in January to go over the areas to be addressed. Depending on the response, we will have a day time meeting and one in the evening to accommodate those who respond and are interested. Once we get organized, we would like to have only three or four meetings a year just to touch base with the committee as a whole. If you have been looking for an area to plug into, why not consider the Kitchen Committee? Interested? Have questions? Contact Karen Dailey at 437-1552. Making a difference... The Ministry Placement Committee is working on a new approach to connecting people with ministry opportunities in the church. It is called Stepping In. Beginning in January, they will have bulletin inserts listing very specific short term jobs. People who are interested in one of the listed needs can stop at a designated table in the greeting area to pick up a card with more information and to leave their name and contact information. Their contact information will be given to the person in charge of the ministry who will promptly follow up. As we get started, we will focus on needs in the church, with the hope of eventually expanding to community needs. Keep your eyes open for these opportunities to “step in” to ministry. You are not alone on this journey! Join us for a much needed break and have a chance to socialize with other Moms while your little ones are being nurtured in the childcare ministry. The group meets at Galloway every second and fourth Wednesday of the month from 9:30 to 11:30 am. MOPS is in need of childcare workers for the ministry. Children range in age from 0-5 years old. If you’d be willing to volunteer or have any questions, please contact Amy Smith. 4 Prayer chain requests may be called to: Don’t miss these times to gather: January 2 - Noon on Thursday January 8 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday January 15 - 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday January 23 - 7:00 p.m. on Thursday John 15:16 (Amplified Bible) You have not chosen me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed you. I have planted you, that you might go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit may be lasting, that it may remain, abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in My Name, as presenting all that I AM, He may give it to you. In 2014, since we are chosen by God and planted, and God wants us to bear fruit in our lives that will last, off with the old life and ways of 2013. We must all seek new ways that God wants for us in 2014 with God, so we will be able to discern between our right hand and our left. Happy New Year! I have been praying for you and your family after ministries on Wednesday evenings. Our faithful God is delighted as He ushers joy and peace into your homes! It is so refreshing to know we are not alone in this parenting journey. Below is this month’s prayer. I am also including scripture references. As I close, I wanted to share a thought from our Orange Strategy: An inheritance is what you leave TO your children; a legacy is what you leave IN your children. One is temporary, while the other is forever. WOW!!! We have work to do! Stand strong parents. Father, keep my children’s minds ever renewed by Your word, and they will know the truth. May they base their lives on Your truth instead of Satan’s lies, so that they will experience the freedom that Jesus died to give them. I pray that they will set their thoughts on what is true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent, and worthy of praise. In Jesus’ name, Amen. (John 8:32, Romans 12:2, Philippians 4:8) In His love, Kim Simons Directory of Children and Family Ministries Resolutions American theologian Jonathan Edwards (17031758) became focused on his life’s purpose at age 19. The result was 70 resolutions, or commitments, he wrote down and then read every week for 35 years until his death. Some of those resolutions include: • To live with all my might while I do live. • To study the Scriptures … steadily, constantly and frequently. • Never to lose one moment of time. • Never to do anything which I should despise or think meanly of in another. • Never to do anything out of revenge. • To let there be something of benevolence in all that I speak. • Never to do anything which I should be afraid to do if it were the last hour of my life. WHAT RESOLUTIONS ARE YOU MAKING THIS YEAR? 7 Parent Cue The International Olympic Committee recently released their updated Olympic Charter [www.Olympic.org/Documents/olympic_charter_en.pdf] in preparation for this year’s Winter Olympics. In it’s PDF form, the Charter is 105 pages long and lists the rules and bylaws governing the Olympic organization. It does not list the rules for individual events, but refers readers to their individual documents. So, an athlete participating in the Olympics has a MEMORY VERSE HONOR lot of rules to learn as they train to do their best. “Love each other deeply. Honor others more than yourselves.” Romans 12:10 NIrV someone know new so you can be better at whatever you do. We believe that God’s Word Knowledge isLetting discovering something you see how valuable they new WEEK 1: our world and ultimately WEEK 3: is the best place to discover something about ourselves. We need to dig into His Word and discover that truth for ourselves. 1 Samuel 16:1-13; 17:1-58 Supporting: 2 Samuel 4:4 The knowledge we glean from the 66 books of the Bible tells us how to live our lives day in and day out. But that BOTTOM LINE: BOTTOM LINE: knowledge is not an end in and of itself. When we discover 1 Samuel 18:1-4, 5-9; 19:1-7; 20:1-42 2 Samuel 6:12bit–and 22a put it into practice, we have its strength on our side every day of our lives. BOTTOM LINE: BOTTOM LINE: In Week One’s Bible story, Jesus models the importance of seeking even as abyyoung Honor God giving boy Him (Luke credit. 2:41-52). Honor others by putting themknowledge first. Our Bottom Line is: Since God knows everything, it’s important to discover what God says. The Bible is God’s Word to us. That’s why it’s important to read the Bible and ask questions to someone we trust. In Week Two’s Bible story, John the Baptist dedicated his life to preparing the way for Jesus (John 1:19-42; supporting – Matthew 3, Mark 1:1-11, Luke 3:1-22). Because he knew God’s Word, he could lay the groundwork for Jesus’ ministry. Our Bottom Line is: Discovering what God says helps me know Jesus. The more we read God’s Word, the more we understand about who Jesus is and what that means for our lives. In Week Three’s Bible story, Jesus is tempted by Satan in the wilderness (Luke 4:1-13; supporting – Matthew 4:1-11). But Jesus was prepared! He knew all of Scripture and was ready for any and all of Satan’s tricks. Our Bottom Line is: Discovering what God says helps me make the wise choice. That’s why it’s important for us to find out what God says and know His words well enough to use them when we are tempted to do something wrong. In Week Four’s Bible story, Jesus tells His followers a story about two men who learn a valuable lesson about building on a strong foundation (Matthew 7:24-29). It reminds us that when we put God’s words into practice, they will help us stand firm when life’s storms blow our way. Our Bottom Line is: Knowing and doing what God says makes me strong. Knowledge doesn’t change anything unless you do something about it. Article By Jessica McKee www.ThinkOrange.com ©2013 The reThink Group.
