Established in 1902, the Shiawassee Regional
Chamber of Commerce is a voluntary, non-profit

While 70% of the land is still used for agriculture,
the community’s manufacturing base has a long
history supporting the automotive industry in
surrounding areas. The community also has a

peninsula. The Midwest is readily accessible from
Shiawassee County with I-69 running through
the center of the county, and I-75,
I-96 and US-127 just minutes

Shiawassee County. This picturesque campus
includes 20 unique Swiss-chalet-style buildings
offering a diverse selection of educational and
community-based services. Baker College is the
only post-secondary degree granting institution
physically located within Shiawassee County,
and is proud of their outstanding faculty and staff
who provide friendly and caring services to their
students and other community stakeholders.
As you step onto campus you’ll immediately
sense a “home away from home” atmosphere
that sits atop more than 40 acres of rolling,
wooded hills. Originally established in 1984
with just 125 students, the campus has now
grown to more than 3,100 students.

many services provided are not commonly associated
with post-secondary institutions, they align well with
Baker’s guiding principle of community orientation and
are delivered in several different ways.
Workshops and short-term training, related to
professional development and skill upgrading, is
available to life-long learners. Basic and advanced
workshops, ranging from two hours to several days,
are available in multiple topic areas. Training related to
computers, manufacturing, construction, welding and
mechanics are just a few areas currently offered.

As a Michigan Works! service provider, employment
assistance is available to qualifying community
members at no charge. Services include resume
development, job referrals, training and more. Local
employers may also receive services at no charge,
including recruitment assistance, applicant screening,
and training for new and existing employees.
Community benefits also include organization
partnerships with the WIA youth program.
The Pathways Alternative and Adult education program
offers the community a quality educational choice for
those seeking a nontraditional option. Students age 1619 are eligible with a referral from their local high school,
while adults are eligible for high school completion, GED
preparation and ABE/literacy support.

South Eastern
Shiawassee
County
County is home to three operating
S hiawassee
railroads – Canadian National (Grand Trunk
Western), a first class railroad; Great Lakes
Central, and Huron and Eastern (Ann Arbor) both
short line railroads. These railroads at interchange
points transport goods and services to the entire
U.S., Canada and Mexico – worldwide if you
include intermodal traffic which helps strengthen
both our local and national economy. In the past
forty years, the Michigan State Trust for Railway
Preservation and its Steam Railroading Institute
have grown tremendously, now housing two
steam locomotives, two diesel locomotives, and
a fleet of passenger cars, plus numerous pieces
of rolling stock. Situated on the site of the old Ann
Arbor Railroad’s steam shops and roundhouse,
the Steam Railroading Institute offers visitors a
firsthand look at the intricacies of working steam
locomotives and the equipment that operated
with them.
The Steam Railroading Institute located in
Owosso on the old Ann Arbor is dedicated to
educating the public
about steam era
railroad technology.
The SRI attracts
tourists to our county and provides recreation
and great excitement to children young and
old, riding the rails behind the famous Pere
Marquette Steam Locomotive #1225. When not
riding the “Big” train they can ride on SRI’s 7l/2 inch gauge miniature railway for fun. In 2009,
SRI attracted more than 30,000 people for its
first ever Train Festival.
At the Durand Union Station, rail fans from all
over can watch for hours on end as CN, GLC
and HESR trains pass through, and/or switch in
the yard. Housed at the station are the Ann Arbor
and Grand Trunk Western Historical societies
where you can learn the history of both of the
railroads operating in Shiawassee County during
the 19th and 20th centuries. DUSI is also home
to the State Railroad History Museum, which
contains a library and historical archives. The
museum attracts students and educators from
around the country to pursue historical railroad
knowledge. The Great Ballroom also provides
rental opportunities.
The second weekend in May, Durand comes
alive with the annual Railroad Days festival
which helps the local economy tremendously.
Plans are moving forward on the creation of
a Diamond District Park and
a National Railroad Memorial.
These attractions, created to honor
our railroad men and women, will
bring people from all over the country
for the purpose of remembering loved
ones who worked on the rails. The
park will include the original double
diamond from Durand and will allow for
numerous recreational opportunities.
The County
Centerpiece
The Shiawassee River is more than a waterway.
As it winds its way through our county to the
Saginaw Bay, it takes many forms. Often it is
a backyard, a park, or a nature center. Other
times it is a still image hanging on a gallery wall.
It can be a trail, connecting one community to
the next, or the road to Lake Huron. It is where
generations gather to catch walleye, canoe or
hike. It is where folks have made their homes
very purposefully, driven by its beauty and
opportunity.
The Shiawassee River is undoubtedly an
important asset to our county. It not only sustains
wildlife, but its banks provide opportunity for
walking, playing, fishing and more. It is a
destination to tourists and a source of inspiration
for artists. What is consistent amongst the
individuals in this county is the desire to protect
this asset by promoting it for what it really is: a
representation of who we are.
The Shiawassee River is the centerpiece
to Shiawassee County. We value it not only
for its ecological importance, but what it
provides recreationally, economically, and to
our overall well-being.
