Meet the
Staff
Hello everyone. My
name is Tim Bishop. I
have worked at the shelter since September 2008.
I assumed the role and
responsibility of shelter
manager in late 2013.
I worked quite extensively with animals and
livestock in my younger
days and have always
had cats and dogs as
pets throughout my life.
Working at the Humane
Society is just like an extension of that commitment and dedication all
pet/animal owners share
without really thinking.
Every day seems to bring
new challenges and mental gymnastics to make
it all work as smoothly
as possible.
I have met and work
with many outstanding
individuals and organizations that make what we
do much easier. Thanks
most of all to this wonderful community and
the folks in it that always
step up to the plate when
needed for our homeless
animals and shelter.

People often ask what items they can donate that would be helpful. The short
answer is EVERYTHING! We use just about everything that you might use at
home. Cleaning products are a huge need. Every kennel, every food dish, every
water dish, and every litter box get washed and sanitized every day. We use dish
soap, cleaning solutions (Lysol, etc.), and common bleach. Additionally, our
pets get a clean blanket or towel in their kennel each day. We keep two set of
washer/dryers going most of the day. We can use laundry detergent as well as
your unwanted blankets and towels.
Did we mention that we feed nearly 100 pets every day? While local merchants
supply a large portion of our food needs, there are always special food needs. Particularly soft foods for kittens and puppies, and those pets with specific needs.
Another big need is office supplies. We use everything that might be found in
the typical office setting. Copy paper, manila folders, pens, pocket folders, paper
clips, and all of those types of supplies are needed.
Give us a call at (989) 723-4262 to inquire as to our specific current needs.

Our History
Before there was a Shiawassee Humane Society, there
was Melda Graff, a one-woman tour de force, enlisting the
help of her husband, Dorey, and anyone else who would
assist her cause. Mrs. Graff waged a personal war on the
cruelty that humans, willingly or unwittingly, wreak on
their animal friends.
On February 2, 1951, The Bureau of Social Agencies
passed a resolution to sponsor the organization of a Shiawassee County Humane Society. An organizational meeting was held at the Extension Hall in Corunna on June 27,
1951. A proposed constitution was approved and a ninemember board of directors was elected. Russell Brandt,
President; Fritz Kolarik, Vice President; Dorothy Booth,
Secretary/Treasurer; Alice Ash, Paul Sandell, Filbert
Hartshorn, Lucille Colby, Mrs. Frank Mahar, and George
Getman completed the board.
The fledgling organization began its operation with a
membership drive and a program aimed at advertising the
public of its purposes, services, and goals. From its inception, the Society’s greatest need was for a headquarters
and a shelter for animals. As no funds were available for
such a project, Mrs. Dorey Graff offered to act as a clearinghouse for calls to the Society. During this time, the
directors made numerous visits to other Humane Societies, which pointed out the need for an animal shelter if the
Society was ever to operate in a meaningful way.
After many false starts and dashed hopes, the first steps
were taken towards a much-needed shelter when the
County Commissioners voted to give the Society one
acre of land on Hibbard Rd., on a 99-year lease, to be
used for an animal shelter. However, even with the site
secured, the Society had no funds with which to proceed
and many began to feel that the dream of a home for the
Society and all-important shelter would never be realized.
A ladies auxiliary was formed and sponsored bake sales,
sewing bees, and auction sales and memberships were solicited at a booth at the county fair, but the proceeds were
never more than enough to cover operating expense.
In 1955, the help of Alvin Bentley was solicited and he
pledged $500 a year in hopes this would encourage others
to follow suit. In 1956, the county appropriated $5,000 to
be used toward completion of the shelter, with the understanding that the Society would then house the animals
picked up by the warden. With this impetus, the project
was under way at last.
For the most part workers on the building project were
volunteers and it would have been impossible to list the
many who contributed labor, time and materials to this
worthy cause. By February 1957, the shelter was sufficiently complete to allow the admittance of the first animals. Mrs. Graff’s dream was realized at last, just prior to
her untimely death on July 5, 1957.
As years passed, money continued to be a problem,
which was exacerbated by inflation, not only in the dollar
but also in the animal population, which made the shelter
on Hibbard Rd. obsolete and inadequate. Being unable to
obtain meaningful increases in support from the county,
the Society embarked on a series of moneymaking projects. “Pets on the Streets” proved popular and lucrative.
Members appeared on downtown streets with their pets,
answered questions about the Society, and solicited contributions. In 1975, the Society presented a series of horse
shows at the county fairgrounds under the chairman of
Mrs. J.R. DeVries. In the five years it was held, the horse
show netted nearly $35,000 for the Society.
Over-crowding of the shelter on Hibbard Rd. became
a real problem and the directors began to dream of an
enlarged modern facility. In 1975, after a year of search-
ing for a suitable location, the society acquired 10 acres
of land on Bennington Rd., with the thought of a new
shelter in mind.
Through the early 1970s, the Society failed to see eye to
eye with the County Commissioneers with regard to operations of the shelter. The Society felt that the Commissioners were not being realistic about the funds required
to operate the shelter as the Society found itself using its
funds to cover the county’s responsibilities rather than for
the goals of the Society.
On February 1, 1977, the Society turned the shelter operations over to the county, ending a twenty-year partnership. Once again, the Society was without a home and
without a shelter so vital to its work and the board immediately began to consider ways and means to develop its
property on Bennington Road. With the profits from the
horse shows as a nucleus, the board voted to proceed with
a building, which would combine Society headquarters
with a shelter.
The building was undertaken on a pay-as-you-go basis
and an intensive campaign for donations to the building
fund was begun. It would be impossible to mention, in

Our History
Continued from Page 6
this short history, all of the people who contributed to make the building possible, but appreciation must be expressed to the Mitchell Foundation, Mrs. Alvin Bentley, Mr. and Mrs. Orlan
Dean, Dr. and Mrs. J.R. DeVries, Mrs. Joseph Woodard and the Owosso Rotary Club.
The building was sufficiently complete to begin operation in November 1977 and an open
house was held on January 16, 1978. It was fully completed in 1981 and is being well utilized
for the projects and goals of the Society. We have our permanent home at last. Mrs. Graff would
be so pleased.
In 1999, a large memorial contribution was made, earmarked for building repairs/maintenance.
The board of directors and the staff at the time looked for the most advantageous ways to use
the donation. It was decided that an
addition was in order. Preparations
were made, money was collected,
and permits were taken. The groundbreaking was held in September of
2001. The addition was to almost
double the size of the existing
