Vibraphonist/percussionist/composer STEFON HARRIS - Stefon Harris' passionate artistry, energetic stage presence, and astonishing virtuosity have propelled him into the forefront of the current jazz scene. Widely recognized and lauded by both his peers and jazz critics, Harris is committed to exploring the rich potential of jazz composition and blazing trails on the vibraphone. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Music he was the recipient of the prestigious Martin Seigal Award from Lincoln Center and has been nominated for three consecutive Grammys. The Los Angeles Times called him "one of the most important young artists in jazz" who is "at the forefront of new New York music" and "much in demand as a star sideman". Harris has played with many jazz luminaries including Steve Turre, Kurt Elling, and Charlie Hunter, in addition to releasing several of his own critically well-regarded albums. Much in demand as a recording artist, he is featured on CDs by Diana Krall, Kenny Barron, Ry Cooder, Joe Henderson, Jason Moran, and our own Tim Warfield, Jr. With deep roots in classical music, Stefon was a member of the Classical Jazz Quartet from 2001-2008 with Ron Carter, Kenny Barron and Lewis Nash that recorded jazz impressions of Rachmaninov, Bach and Tchaikovsky. He has toured and recorded with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and performed his original works with the Dutch Metropole Orchestra. Stefon recently took time off and worked with computer and graphic specialists to develop an “App” for jazz education called the “Harmony Cloud” which he will use to instruct students at this year’s camp. . STEVE WILSON has attained “first-call” status as a studio musician, concert performer and educator. He is currently Associate Professor at City College of N.Y., and on faculty at the Juilliard School, and has been honored by New York University recognizing his outstanding service in jazz education. A musician's musician, Wilson has performed on more than 150 recordings as well as eight recordings as a leader. He began playing saxophone in his native Hampton, Virginia, and performed in R&B/funk bands throughout his teens. Majoring music at Virginia Commonwealth University, he performed and/or studied with Jimmy and Percy Heath, Jon Hendricks, Jaki Byard, dFrank Foster and Ellis Marsalis. Landing a chair with O.T.B (Out of the Blue), a sextet of promising young players recording on Blue Note Records, Wilson moved to New York in 1987 and the following year toured the U.S. and Europe with Lionel Hampton. Becoming a first-call choice for veteran and emerging artists alike, Wilson was the subject of a New York Times profile "A Sideman's Life", highlighting his work with the many ensembles that sought his talented services - Ralph Peterson, Jr., Renee Rosnes, Joanne Brackeen, The American Jazz Orchestra, The Mingus Big Band, The Smithsonian Jazz Masterworks Orchestra, and more. In 1996 he joined the acclaimed Dave Holland Quintet, and from 1998-2001 he was a member of Chick Corea's Grammy winning sextet "Origin". In 2009 Wilson was a member of the Blue Note 7, an all-star septet assembled to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Blue Note Records. Also in that year Wilson made his orchestral debut performing Heitor Villa Lobos' Fantasia for Soprano Saxophone and Chamber Orchestra with the Vermont Mozart Festival Orchestra. By popular demand he returned to the VMF in 2010 performing a commissioned work Sweet For Duke (for Saxophone & Chamber Orchestra) by Jonathan Ragonese. In a major interview feature, the Wall Street Journal proclaimed, "The Sideman Becomes the Star." This article declared, "Mr. Wilson is essential to this city's jazz landscape." Since the 1990's Wilson has been regularly cited in the Downbeat Magazine Critics and Readers' Polls. In 2008, the Jazz Journalists Association nominated him as Best Alto Sax Player, and for Best Soprano Sax Player in 2010. Wilson currently performs with several Grammy-winning ensembles: Maria Schneider Orchestra, Christian McBride Big Band, Billy Childs Quartet, Ron Carter Big Band, and the Buster Williams Quartet. . Please come out for this rare performance by two great jazz masters in this very special space. This series is underwritten by a generous contribution from the Shearer Family Fund of The Foundation for Enhancing Communities on behalf of R. Scott Shearer 4. As many of you know, we recently received a large bequest of over 2,500 jazz CD's and hundreds of LP's from the estate of long time CPFJ member Joseph Shaw. We have been presenting the cd's for sale at our concerts, but limited table space has prevented us from showing all of this collection at one time. The complete collection has now arrived at our expanded office space where it may all be examined and purchases made. Call for an appointment after June 1 (717-540-1010) to shop the entire collection. Pricing for the LP's will vary (these are mostly big bands and vocalists - some quite rare and in great shape). Most CD's are sold at $5.00 per disc. Come visit us and add some great music to your collection - thanks for your support! If you have any records or Cds in good condition that you would like to donate, please call us. Donations to C.P.F.J. are tax deductible. JOIN THE CPFJ YOUTH BAND Ron Waters is the Director for the CPFJ Youth Band. There is no tuition fee and all applicants are accepted. Please contact Mr. Waters at (717) 432-3109 or via email [email protected] - all young musicians with an interest in learning to improvise are welcome. Our continuing dedication to jazz education led to the creation of the CPFJ Youth Band over 25 years ago. Mr. Waters is a professional arranger, composer and trumpet player and the band is open to all school age musicians - grade school through high school. Mr. Waters prepares arrangements to suit the particular talents of the participants each year. All applicants are accepted without audition - Mr. Waters finds a niche for every instrumentalist and vocalist. The band’s rehearsals and concerts are scheduled year round including performances at the Central PA Jazz Festival, Jazz Picnic, and many other events. Not only do the students get wonderful experience playing in an improvising ensemble, but they get to meet kids from other schools who have the same interests. This ensemble offers a different experience than most High School Jazz Ensembles - it is not a place where the students simply read the notes on the page - all members learn to improvise and get valuable experience playing jazz standards and original music in a group setting. The Youth Band is also not restricted to the traditional big band instrumentation (trumpets, trombones, saxes & rhythm section) - all instruments are welcome - we have had almost every imaginable instrument….cello, accordion, oboe, flute, etc. in past bands. The Youth Band plays all of our festivals and major events as well as many civic functions and concerts - come join the fun!! NEW ONLINE STORE at FRIENDSOFJAZZ.ORG When you visit our web site you will notice a link to the NEW ONLINE STORE. With this new convenient online site, you are able to pay your membership with any credit card, and contribute to the Festival, Jazz Camp, or Ron Waters Scholarship Fund. .
