STUDENT BODY 17 YONSEI UNIVERSITY The Korean Language Institute The Korean Language Institute has been recognized for its talent in sharpening students’ skills Aida Assubayeva ■Level 6 Regular Program When I first came to Seoul I wanted to be able to have conversations with Koreans as fast as possible to become a part of the Korean society, so I followed the recommendations of the Yonsei students. They told me that the emphasis of the Yonsei Korean Language Institute is more on speaking than on writing. After having taken two language levels here at Yonsei, I could say that this is really true. CURRENT STUDENTS Nolan Isaac Warner Jingo Usami ■Level 6 ■Level 6 Regular Program Regular Program If you’re interested in learning Korean properly and with accuracy, the Yonsei Korean Language Institute is the only choice. Out of all of the good Korean language programs in Seoul, I heard that Yonsei was famous for being very academic, and producing great Korean speakers. After studying at KLI for a year, I finally understood what everyone was talking about. For me, the biggest attraction of the Korean Language Institute, above all, was the quality of the classes. The educational content was quite specific—the Reading, Writing, Listening, and Speaking sections were taught meticulously one by one, and with high standards. The students in all of my classes were all very passionate about learning Korean, which made it easy for me to practice in a natural environment during my stay in Seoul. The teachers are all very passionate about teaching as well, making the 4 hour days fly by. There were also many opportunities to experience Korean culture while learning the language as well. If I had the chance, I would do it all again in a heartbeat. 18 2015-2016 KOREAN LANGUAGE PROGRAM Also, because each of the teachers taught with considerable enthusiasm, all of the students had a higher desire to study what we were learning about. All you need is the desire to learn, and if you listen well to the teachers’ guidance you can feel your Korean skills improving naturally. After a few weeks, I was already able to talk about daily life topics in Korean. Of course, my level of speaking wasn't that high (compared to native speakers) but it still made me happy that I was able to talk about little things. And of course, it's fun to learn Korean. The classmates are really from all over the world. Before I came to Korea, I didn't expect to meet so many students from Eastern Europe or South America. Even if the classmates are from all over the world - the atmosphere in class is very good. It's so fun to practice daily-life-related dialogues and you learn a lot about actual Korean daily life. The teachers are also always motivated and really kind. Due to that fact, I can really use my acquired knowledge directly and that way, I was able to make Korean friends through the different language exchange programs. Also, to give you a little bit of extra information, if you come every day to school, you'll get a chance to get a nice “prize” at the end of the course. So if you are interested in learning Korean, I really recommend Yonsei Korean Language Institute - you will have a great time here! ALUMNI Kristine Stromsenes Shohan, Mohammad Abdullah Al Shajed ■B Course Level 4 Regular Program ■Regular Program ■Works for Hanhwa Chemical PVC International Division I have been studying at the language school at Yonsei for 3 semesters; the classes are really interesting and the teachers are always nice and very helpful. They always explain everything in a way that makes it easy to understand and they are always there to help you if you have any questions. While studying here my Korean has improved a lot, Yonsei focuses a lot on grammar and makes sure you use it correctly, but they also value the speaking part just as much. In October 2009 I won an award for the Yonsei University Korean Writing Contest for Foreigners, and in 2013 I scored a Level 6 on the Korean Language Proficiency Test. During class the teachers ask lots of questions using the grammar and you get to make examples yourselves to practice. Looking back from where I am now, learning Korean at the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute was the best opportunity I’ve had. I think the first and most important thing to do when you start living in a new country is to learn the language and culture. Having just graduated from high school in my home country, I did not have any prior opportunities to study Korean before I started my study abroad here. But after what seemed to be just a short time, I had not only gone from beginner level to advanced level, but while attending KLI I learned a lot about Korean culture. In no time I had even graduated from university, just like any other Korean college student, and am now living well and without any difficulties whatsoever. From level 3 and up there are discussions in class about different subjects, which are both interesting and a great way to practice. It’s a complete program that focuses on all aspects of the language, making a difficult language very easy to learn. The school also offers different kinds of cultural activities. Every week you have the opportunity to watch a Korean movie for free, and they also offer cooking classes during school hours. We also got to learn how to make makgeolli and kimchi after school and meet Korean students to do different activities with them. And there is a language exchange program where you get partnered up with a Korean Yonsei student to practice speaking Korean. This fall the school also offered a 3-day weekend trip to Yeongju for free to participate in the apple picking festival which is famous in this area. While studying at Yonsei I got to know a lot of interesting people and now have the opportunity to travel all around the world to visit them. The school is located in a great area, with lots of other students and tons of fun places to go after school. Studying at Yonsei is truly an amazing experience. My study abroad experience began on June 27th, 2008 in my Level 1 Korean class, and 7 years later I have graduated with a degree in Electrical Engineering from Yonsei University and am now working for Hanhwa Chemicals—a large Korean company that many people would love to work for. The Yonsei University Korean Language Institute is not a place where all you do is study from textbook—there are a wide variety of other enriching activities. For example, there are cultural immersion experiences, cooking lessons, and singing and drama competitions to name a few, and they are all things that provide helpful knowledge to people no matter your job or age. For speaking, listening, reading, and writing, I highly recommend the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute to anyone who wants to become proficient in all aspects of the Korean language. Sun Chen ■International Campus University Korean Program ■Spring 2015 Graduate Student of Korean Studies Interdisciplinary Program at Yonsei University Graduate School When it comes to Korean Language programs, the Yonsei University Korean Language Institute is by far the most popular among international students. Without discrimination, all students receive equal opportunities. It feels like it was only yesterday that I started this program in Level 1, without any basic knowledge of the Korean language. It seems unimaginable to me that I have scored a TOPIK Level 6 and that I am already going to graduate from this program. It is all thanks to the teachers at the KLI. Through the training and guidance of my teachers, I was able to learn so many things; from the big things to the little things on the TOPIK test, every point was covered. At the KLI, not only did I gain a lot of knowledge, but also I was able to make new friends. The happy times I have spent together with the people are still so vivid to me. Yonsei University’s KLI offers the best education and facilities in the country. The study rooms, game room, and lounge are gathered together conveniently in one building and not only give us convenience but also raise our will to study. As I passed each level the vocabulary and grammar became increasingly difficult, and even though I often stayed up all night to prepare papers or presentations, the next day I would always feel my energy refreshed when I came to class. There were always new things to learn and new challenges to face, so I strived to do my best. Looking back on all the laughter and all the tears, like beautiful roses and bitter drink, these are worthwhile that will become everlasting memories. INTERVIEWS 19 : With Passion What and how you learn depends on how enthusiastically you use your time here, and once you do this you will notice that even your perspective on the meaning of life can change. Here at Yonsei University, a place with 130 years of history, explore the endless possibilities and add greater value to your language learning experience.
