High SAT scores show colleges that you may be eligible to skip basic courses in English and Mathematics. Even though the process is controversial, some potential employers take a look at your SAT scores during the evaluation process before hiring. This means that prepping for the SAT as well as prepping for college are vitally important for all high school students. While SAT subject test scores may not seem important for homeschool students, all high school students who are going to college need them. Qualifications For Scholarships Many scholarships have GPA requirements and some also have SAT score requirements as well. Tips for High School Students By Unigo COMMON MISTAKES on FINANCIAL AID Forms to Avoid A s a high school student, you know you are going to be getting quite a bit of work thrown at you all at once. However, you may need to know more about the financial aid and the mistakes which you can make with the papers here. Once you know these mistakes, it is easier for you to get them completed and done properly. MISTAKE 1 Follow the directions on the FAFSA. Stacey Kostell, director of admissions, University of Illinois —Urbana-Champaign The most common mistakes when filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) are easily avoided. vi POP QUIZ Vocabulary Mistakes on financial aid forms can cost you money. The most common mistake with financial aid papers is waiting until you get your college admission paperwork back to apply for this. When you do this, the chances are higher for you to miss out on one or another aspect of your papers and not be able to get your papers. Another mistake people make is waiting of the FAFSA because they think they will get financial aid in the form of scholarships or other papers. However, this may fall through and when this does happen, the chances are good you may have missed an important deadline for your aid. Something else which is common is waiting for an exact number before asking for aid. When you do this, the chances are good you will not get this number in time either. So you should estimate the amount you need. Having the chance to attend college is a great thing, but for some people they do not realize they need to have some form of financial aid in place to afford the school. By knowing the common mistakes, though, it is easy to avoid the problems and know if you will get your aid properly or not. MISTAKE 3 Susie Watts, college consultant, College Direction Financial aid is available on a first-comefirst-served basis. Making mistakes will delay the FAFSA form and could cause you to lose out. Here are some tips to keep in mind: • When it refers to “you,” it is referring to the student. • Don’t leave an income question blank — put in a zero instead. • Most students under the age of 24 are still dependent. Don’t wait—estimate. Betsy Morgan, founder, College Matters LLC By far, the most common misconception about filing for financial aid is that one needs to file taxes before applying. Instead, families should gather up their financial data (pay stubs, bank receipts, etc.) and estimate. On both the FAFSA and the CSS PROFILE, there is an option to indicate that while you intend to file taxes, you have not yet done so. This lets the colleges know that you are estimating. Try to get as close as you can to the real numbers, however, or your estimated award will not be accurate. • Avoid writing wrong social security and driver’s license numbers. • Remember to sign and date the form. • Don’t list your adjusted gross income as equal to total income. These include: • Mistyping the student’s legal name, social security number, and birthday • Forgetting to enter the PIN for the student and parent before submitting, as this serves as the electronic signature for the FAFSA • Not answering all questions correctly and completely • Failing to update the family’s financial information immediately upon completing your tax return if an estimate was given prior to doing taxes MISTAKE 2 • Remember to list colleges. MISTAKE 4 Keep track of your FAFSA pin; you’ll need it later! Jim McCorkell, CEO, adMISSION POSSIBLE ® As simple as it may sound, students and parents should write down their FAFSA PIN and store it with the rest of their passwords where they won’t forget it. Lots of students waste time trying to find or remember their PIN and ultimately have to reset it every year—and many parents have to do the same! This simple step can actually save a lot of time and help the application process go smoothly in future years. MISTAKE 5 Complete the process accurately and on time. Megan Dorsey, SAT prep & college advisor, College Prep LLC Every year students fail to receive aid due to application errors. A common error is failing to apply. Some families knowingly don’t apply under the mistaken belief that they make too much to receive aid. Others fail to complete the application. Some universities require school-specific forms or the CSS PROFILE, while others don’t. Some students complete the application but submit incomplete or incorrect information, thus delaying the process. The final mistake is waiting too long to apply. Financial aid can be like going through a buffet—the people in the front of the line get their choice of the best offerings while those at the end may be left with table scraps. To ensure you receive the best possible offer, apply on time and make sure your application is complete and accurate. -ilppa-dia-laicnanfi-eht-no-sekatsim-nommoc-era-tahw/52/10/2102Article /strepxcited e-snoifrom ssimdhttp://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/college-admissions-exa-egelloc/sgolb/noitacude/moc.swensu.www//:ptth morf detic elcitrA noitac perts/2012/01/25/what-are-common-mistakes-on-the-financial-aid-application If you have any questions, be sure to ask a representative in your school’s financial aid office. I get a lot of parents wanting to learn how to better Learn How to Recognize and Help communicate with their teen children. Here are a few key points from an article published by Empowering Parents: Depressed Students by Elton Lin, ThinkTank Learning Lead Academic Counselor By Laura McMullen The secret to opening your child’s ears One fifth of females between the ages of 14 and 17 reported feeling severely depressed at some point, according to a recent Department of Education report, and there are many factors of high school life that can lead to such feelings. Teachers, who often see these factors firsthand in classrooms and hallways, should know how to interpret the signs of their students’ depression. Here’s a simple secret that will help you in everything you do with your teen: No matter how hard it might be, try to start all interactions with your child with understanding, even if you don’t fully agree or even quite comprehend what they’re talking about. Take the emotionality out of the equation. Emotion is your enemy when you’re trying to get through to your teen. Remind yourself that what he says and does is not a reflection on you. You may not like how he’s behaving—or even how he’s thinking—but keep your emotions out of it, even if his behavior impacts you. Ask curious questions…not loaded questions. Ask your teen for his ideas and be collaborative. Let him see that you believe in him and that you’re not mad at him for struggling in his life. When you let him see that you have faith in his abilities and he has the space to work things out on his own, you will begin to develop true confidence in him. Don’t be needy; stand on your own two feet. Don’t “need” your teen’s cooperation, validation, or good behavior. As soon as you need something from your child so that you can feel better, you have put yourself in a vulnerable position because he does not have to give it to you. When you need something and don’t get it, you will naturally try harder by controlling and manipulating more. And your teen will become more and more defiant or passively compliant—neither of which is good. Don’t do anything until you’re both calm. viii Another rule of thumb is to avoid doing anything until you and your child have both calmed down. The fact is, you don’t have to respond to your child when you are upset, or when your child is upset and in your face. You just don’t. You can say nothing. You can take a few minutes or more if you need to. When emotions have evened out, you can sit down and talk with him. It’s never good to try to bring up a difficult subject or resolve a conflict in the heat of the moment. So if either you or your child is upset, pause and come back when you can address things in a calmer way. POP QUIZ Vocabulary valet means : For Parents 5 Communication Tips The Department of Education report shows that 21 percent of high school females reported having a Major Depressive Episode (MDE) at one point in their lifetime, which it defines as a “period of at least two weeks when a person experiences a depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure in daily activities, plus at least four additional symptoms of depression (such as problems with sleep, eating, energy, concentration, and feelings of self-worth.)” Only 10 percent of males in the same age bracket, the report states, have experienced one of these episodes. “There are some significant gender differences in the way that psychological distress gets manifested,” says Amber Douglas, assistant professor of psychology and education at Mount Holyoke College in Massachusetts. “Traditionally, we tend to think about females—women and girls— internalizing their symptoms, and boys and men externalizing their symptoms.” Males, particularly adolescent men, are more likely to act, rather than reflect, on their feelings, and those actions can sometimes lead to behavioral problems or the student being labeled as “destructive,” says Douglas. For example, while twice as many young women than men in the Department of Education report experienced a Major Depressive Episode, the same report shows that greater percentages of males in grades 9 through 12 have reported high-risk behaviors, such as getting into physical fights, drinking and driving, and carrying a weapon. The report also shows that, in 2007, male students were suspended from school at twice the rate of their female peers. Douglas says that there are many factors that explain why students may begin to feel angry in their teens, whether they’re internalizing or externalizing those feelings. Students are developing their identities and shifting their support systems from family members to peers, she says. “Those peer relationships become very important,” says Douglas. “[Students are] learning how to negotiate what it means ... to be a good friend, what it means to be loyal, what it means to successfully negotiate conflict, and also figuring out romantic relationships as an additional layer to all of this.” Sometimes, academic pressure in high school—particularly the stress surrounding standardized tests—can make some students angry and depressed, Douglas says. “It’s great if kids are taking pride in their work,” she says. “It’s not so great if they’re becoming overly stressed and obsessed with perfection.” But it can be hard to diagnose overwhelmed and depressed students. Douglas says teachers should keep an eye out for a change of behavior in the student, such as being less responsive, acting more withdrawn, or associating with troublemaking peers. Then, Douglas says, the teacher should privately talk to the student in a “non-threatening” way. “I think that if the teacher is really concerned, then sure, get the parents involved,” she says. “But I think a lot can be learned by having a one-on-one conversation.” In this discussion, Douglas suggests that teachers take into account the changes their students are going through. “As students are moving toward adulthood, I think it’s important that you as a teacher are recognizing that the students get to make some of their own decisions and they’re negotiating some important stuff.” Article cited from http://www.usnews.com/education/blogs/high-schoolnotes/2012/01/18/learn-how-to-recognize-and-help-depressed-students ix a. a person hired to fight for another country b. a man who is much concerned with his dress and appearance c. a crude uncouth ill-bred person lacking refinement d. a servant who acts as a personal attendant to hisway employer A pop quiz is the perfect to assess student knowledge and understanding. Water For Elephants, by Sara Gruen, and Breaking Night by Liz Murray are both literary works that demonstrates insight and accomplishment through an individual’s solitary decision. Water For Elephants although fictional was heavily based on research conducted on the 1800’s circus life. Jacob Jankowski is a young college student, who, after his parent’s death, decided to leave college and find his way in the world. Although influenced by his unfortunate circumstance, it is actually his own solitary decision to leave, find his own adventure in order to understand the world he knew so little about. If he didn’t do thing his own way, he would have been discovered his love for Marlena or the circus animals. Jacob’s success is his self-discovery, happiness and realization about both his life and his world just because he made that first solitary decision to leave college. Breaking Night by Liz Murray, a true story of Liz’s life, is another model for future reference and copies of accomplishment through one’s solitary decision. Before Liz’s mother’s death, she depended heavily on her family’s support. Liz was unable to escape from her drugaddict family; She believed that she could change her own hopeless circumstances and alleviate her family’s suffering. When Liz was 10 years old, she began to step out into the world to make her own money and learned the hardships and flows of the world. The moment when Liz’s mother died, Liz was released from the onerous responsibility of her family and the past. She began to study and become someone Liz never imagined she could be, someone successful. Through overcoming trials and hardships, Liz broke through her impecunious and she dedicated her life to clinical psychology. Her success was accomplished because she did not give up when hope was lost. She stood firm and continued seeking help in the dark. It is during the darkest times when the light shines the brightest, and Liz found that light. Both literary works, although different, are powerful demonstrations of how accomplishment is achieved though one’s own personal determination and decisions regarding how one wants to live his/her life. Testimonial Between the time of when I took my PSAT and my SAT, about the span of one year, my score improved more than 400 points. I ended up getting a 2300 on my SAT, but I would not have been able to achieve that score if it were not for ThinkTank Learning. The summer class I took spanned only for one month, but within that month we were taking a total of twenty hours of classes per week and three practice tests. After taking the classes, I felt so much more confidant and ready to take the test because I had more than adequate preparation. Because we took so many practice tests following the exact same format as the real test, I was accustomed to the exact outline of it. I was completely comfortable with type of questions, amount of questions, and time given because of the practice that I got through the summer classes, and I was able to improve my score with each practice test l took. The practice tests I took by myself at home only caused me to improve about 30 to 50 points, but once I took ThinkTank Learning’s SAT class, my score immediately shot up. Kuoikumama No doubt we are all familiar with the stereotype of Japanese mothers who push their children far too hard when it comes to schoolwork. Well, so have the Japanese; they even have a word for it: kyoikumama. Literally translated this means “education mother”. Kuoikumama can be seen in many Japanese movies, literature and, despite western nations having similar parents these days, it does not have a word exactly like it in English. Words that Can’t be Translated into English Brandon Fukuda 不 能翻 譯 成 英 文 的 字 M.S. in Biomedical Engineering, University of Southern California Teaching Subject: Maths, Physics Qualunquismo Brandon Fukuda holds an M.S. in Biomedical Engineering from USC. In his classwork, he designed a prototype of an EKG and a computer program to analyze pulse oximetry data. He has tutored for several private companies in the Southern California and Northern California areas, specializing in high school curricula and SAT prep. He is interested in teaching abroad, particularly, in providing math and science services to students in impoverished countries. In his spare time, he likes to play the guitar, work out, and travel. Mark Lyon M.A. in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Payap University B.S. in Mathematics, University of Arizona Teaching Subject: Maths, Physics xviii Mark is about to complete his PhD in Literature from University of Nevada. He has seven years professional teaching experience, working with children and adults at universities, summer camps, and private learning centers. He has utilized his eclectic academic interests to teach a wide variety of courses, including Freshman Composition, Fiction Writing, Research Methods, Statistics, World Literature, Modern Grammar, English for Academic Purposes, and Business Writing. He has also been teaching standardized test preparation classes for several years, including the Math and Verbal components of the SAT, GRE, and GMAT, as well as doing 1-on-1 tutoring for the IELTS and TOEFL exams. He believes that a great teacher must possess the same spirit of inquiry and love for learning that he expects to foster in his students, and so Mark is constantly striving to expand his knowledge and his teaching repertoire. When he is not teaching and tutoring, he enjoys reading, writing, competing in chess competitions, and spending time with his wife and children. Then this word applies to you. The term came from a political party in Italy, in 1944, which promoted anti-political feelings and a mistrust of public organizations. The party was called the Fronte dell’Uomo Qualunque or “the front of the ordinary man”. Rather appropriate considering how many people obviously feel this way about politics as is evidenced by the low voter turnouts that we often see in elections. Bakku-shan Here is another great Japanese word with no English equivalent (though I am sure someone can come up with one in the comments). Bakku-shan is the word for a girl who looks pretty from behind but ugly in front. I can’t find out whether they have a word for the reverse situation, or for that other frighteningly common problem these days, where you think a girl looks good from behind only to discover that she is a he! Modern fashion has a lot to answer for! Article cited from (轉載自) http://learni.st/users/cynamen. horn1/boards/2750-words-that-can-t-be-translated-into-english Bakku-shan xix 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 INTERVIEW HOLIDAY EXTRA CURRICULAR CONTACT USACTIVITIES FOR MORE DETAILS CONTACT US FOR MORE DETAILS 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 EXTRA CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES CONTACT US FOR MORE DETAILS 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 1223.5 - 4 我們優質的轉學服務將幫助您成功轉入名校,讓學歷 成為您一生的驕傲。先進的轉學申請服務提供了個人 化的學業規劃、課外活動及實習機會的指導,一對一 的課程輔導,激發學生應有的潛能,讓進入理想大學 的美夢成真。 PERSONAL ESSAY HOLIDAY 1223.5 - 4 Our transfer packages provide state-of-the-art services that will help you transfer to a prestigious college, where your resulting degree will become a source of lifelong pride.
