Essex County Executive
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 25th Annual Newark Athletic Hall of Fame (NAHF) Dinner.
I am so glad that you are here tonight to celebrate the Silver Anniversary
of this great sports institution. As a member of the Hall myself, I can tell
you, it is a thrill to be an inductee.
This year, 25 outstanding athletes will be inducted into the Hall in
recognition of their achievements, both here as high school students and
later on in college. Football, basketball, track…players and coaches, men
and women…the diversity of the inductees makes us realize how broad
the athletic opportunities are, and how multi-cultural our County is.
Athletes have the chance to become community leaders, as so many of
our inductees prove. They stand as role models, and when youngsters
see success they are encouraged to do their best in all areas of their lives.
We will also recognize the achievements of the 2012 Essex County
College Track and Field Team…strong enough to have 11 members of
the team participate in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Thank you for being part of our community of friends. Your
participation here tonight will help make the dreams of some young
athlete-scholars come true. We appreciate your commitment to the
Newark Athletic Hall of Fame, and look forward to seeing you next year.
Sincerely,
Joseph N. DiVincenzo, Jr.

President’s Message
President’s Message
Inductees, Scholarship Recipients, Team Awardees, Family and Friends,
It is with great honor that I welcome you tonight to our 25nd Annual Newark Athletic Hall of
Fame Induction Dinner, our Silver Anniversary.
Since 1988, we have been honoring athletes from public and private schools in and around the
City of Newark. Our initial purpose was to focus attention on Newark’s glorious athletic past and
it’s bright future by creating a positive situation where friendships, camaraderie and memories
can be renewed. Tonight we continue that tradition with new inductees, scholarship winners and
a team award.
The Honorees have proven, as in the past, that they are to be recognized as true role models, a
characteristic very much in need these days, whether in a large city or a small town. You can turn
to a bio page in this or any one of our previous twenty four journals and find a role model you
can be proud to emulate.
The hallmarks of a good athlete are dedication, desire, teamwork, hard work, time management
and good sportsmanship. These are the same qualities necessary to succeed in the classroom and
the workplace. That’s why our Hall of Fame Family of Inductees are to be viewed as success
stories, on and off the field.
To our Scholarship Award Winners, you have been recognized to possess the characteristics
outlined above; therefore, we wish you good fortune in college and hope to see you back here
one evening on the dais, as a future Inductee into the Hall of Fame.
In addition to the individual inductees this year we are recognizing the 2012 Essex County
College Track and Field Team who placed an unprecedented eleven athletes in the London
Olympic Games and their coach, Michael Smart.
Finally, as Newark has become a hotbed for professional and college sports alike, we must not
forget the high school and recreation level athletes and support their efforts. Therefore; we
continue our relationships with the teams involved and their connection with the youth of the
city.
We are proud of our student athletes from the City of Newark.
Furthermore, let me thank the members of the NAHF Board, who have worked so tirelessly on
making this night the success that it continues to be, and to the donors and attendees out there
who support our efforts each and every year.

Congratulations
Newark Athletic Hall of Fame
25th Annual Awards Dinner
It is my honor to congratulate you on your induction to the
Newark Athletic Hall of Fame.
I am proud to honor the inductee class of 2013 who come from
Newark public and private schools; you are truly an inspiration
for our City and serve as a role model for other youth in our
community.
Striving for athletic and academic excellence is the hallmark of
a successful athlete. As a former college athlete, I can attest
firsthand how competition through sports and recreation
mirrors the competitive nature of what it takes to be productive
and accomplished in today’s society. Determination, discipline
and leadership are all qualities that every one of you possess and
have
exemplified
-
proving
that
there
are
endless
opportunities when combining athletics with education.
Newark has a long tradition of athletes who have excelled in
their chosen sport and continued on to make substantial
contributions both on and off the field. I am confident that this
year will be no different and you will write new pages of glory
in our athletic history.
Again, I welcome you to the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame as it
marks its 25th Anniversary and congratulate you on this honor.

THE SILVER ANNIVERSARY
The idea of a Newark Athletic Hall of Fame was conceived by Mel Knight who discussed it with Richie Regan and they asked John McLaughlin and Jerry Greco, as business community representatives, to join with them in forming a committee. The group arranged with John Murray, an attorney, to establish a set of by‐laws and to register the Committee as a non‐profit organization. It was incorporated in 1988 as The Newark Athletic Hall of Fame, a New Jersey Non‐Profit Corporation. John McLaughlin acted as incorporator, along with the first trustees: Jerome Greco, Melvin Knight, Richard Regan, Joseph W. Walsh and John P. McLaughlin. This was written and signed on March 14, 1988. Attending the first meeting on December 1, 1987, in the Physical Education Building at Essex County College was: Mayor Sharp James, Walter Daniels, Hoddy Mahon, Bob Brewster, Steve Adubato, Jack Dalton, Art Coles, Bill Mallory, Charlie Johnson, Lynell Robinson, Rip Rossi, Ollie Dickerson, Vincent Finch, Angelo Aromando, Burney Adams, Charles Rubin, Jerry Greco, Richie Regan, Sid Dorfman, Mel Knight and John McLaughlin. Agreeing to serve, but not in attendances were: Lloyd Glicken, Joe Walsh, Nick Serio, Florence Salerno, John Allen, Matt Rivers, Frank Verducci, John Murphy and John Murray. The first slates of elected officers were: Sharp James‐Honorary Chairman, John P. McLaughlin‐President, Melvin Knight‐Vice President, Jerome D. Greco‐Secretary/Treasurer, Richard J. Regan and Joseph W. Walsh, Trustees. “The purposes for which the Corporation is organized are charitable and educational including the specific purpose of honoring past great athletes of the City of Newark, New Jersey, thereby calling attention to Newark New Jersey’s fine history and encouraging youth of the City of Newark to participate in athletics and to give them a positive view of the future”, as stated in Article Two of the original by‐laws. The Inaugural Induction Dinner was tentatively planned for June 16, 1988, possibly at Essex County College. Appointed committees would deal with publicity, program, awards, tickets and dinner arrangements. In the first year, all of Newark’s high schools and colleges would be represented, but election would not be restricted to school athletes. An open, non‐restrictive policy would be adopted. An athlete that brought recognition to Newark, regardless of his/her residence would be considered for election. And participants in all sports would be given consideration. Thus the Newark Athletic Hall of Fame was born. The first class of Inductees included: Richie Regan and Jim Bouie‐West Side, Greg Notte and Al Zmijewski‐East Side, Leroy Smith and Al DeRogatis‐Central, Pete Shaw and Manny Polci‐Barringer, Al Attles and Swede Masin‐Weequahic, Lonnie Wright and Al Makeoff‐South Side, Billy Conn and Owen Carroll‐St,Benedict’s, Julius Nicolai ‐Arts, Marty Liquori‐Essex Catholic, Ray DeRiggi‐Vailsburg, Jack Speary‐Good Counsel. Wade Likens‐St.Michael’s, Skippy Minisi‐Newark Academy and John Murphy‐
St.James. Also, inducted in the General Category were Sid Dorfman, Joe Liddy, Ray Dandridge, Allie Stolz, Les Fein, Vinny Farrell, Sal Commisa, Dr. Gerald Certulo, Dr. Margaret Brown and Joe Kasberger. AN

played Westfield to a 27-27 tie ending a 16 game winning streak. He was City wrestling
champion for three consecutive years and was the Newark City Championship Most Valuable
Wrestler in his senior year. He was also NJ Scholastic District IX Wrestling Champion. From
Barringer, he received the “Most Valuable Athlete Award” for all three sports (football, wrestling
and outdoor track) during his senior year. James also received the Regional S.A.G.A Athlete
of The Year Award following his senior year. James graduated 37th out of approximately 530
students in his senior class and accepted a full athletic scholarship to Howard University.
Howard University made a decision in 1967 to begin rebuilding a strong athletic tradition to
coincide with its stellar academic standards. To restart the tradition, the university granted
two full athletic scholarships in football in 1967. James received one of the first scholarships
granted by the university. Subsequent to James’ success at Howard, the university recruited
student athletes very heavily from Newark and other northern New Jersey cities for several
years thereafter. James majored in architecture while lettering in two sports per year for four
years. Although the athletic scholarship was for football, he also wrestled for four years. As an
outstanding running back and defensive back, James received the Katus R. Blakely Football
Award (“Mr. Bison”). While at Howard James was CIAA Conference wrestling champion for four
years. He received the fastest pin award for two years during the conference championships.
He also received the CIAA Conference Most Valuable Wrestler Award during his senior year.
At the end of his fourth year at Howard University, James received invitations to attend
professional football camp from the New York Jets and the Dallas Cowboys. Although the idea
of attending professional football camp was intriguing, his goal was to complete his required
studies and receive his degree on time. Since the School of Architecture was a five year
program, the decision to remain in school was ultimately very easy. He accepted his bachelor’s
degree and received a fellowship for graduate study at Rutgers University.
James was the assistant wrestling coach at Howard University (Washington, DC) and Essex
County College (Newark, NJ) and played strong safety for several years with the Jersey Oaks
Semi-Pro Football Team.
James co-founded the Royal Blue Bear Alumni Association (“RBBAA”) with several Barringer
Alumni. The RBBAA mission is to “Provide a lifeline link to student athletes to help them
achieve their full potential”.

Donald “Don” Baskerville
VAILSBURG HIGH SCHOOL
Don is a native of Newark, New Jersey, who was born on April 17, 1948. He is the son of Ethel
Baskerville, and the late Alfred “Jeff” Baskerville. He is the proud father of two sons, Kelly and
Corey Baskerville, brother of the late Norman Sanders and Rodney Baskerville and grandfather
of Courtney and Kelsey Baskerville.
He attended the Newark Public School system attending Robert Treat School, Ivy Street
Junior High School and Vailsburg High School. He enjoyed playing football, basketball and
baseball while at Vailsburg High. However, his true first love was baseball, where he excelled by
contributing to three straight Newark City league titles. As a junior, he was selected in 1965 as
All Newark City, All Essex County and All State for his baseball achievements. An article in the
local paper described “Baskerville as a playground product with a strong arm that was used to
cut down base runners”
During the course of that junior season, he batted .347, scored 20 runs, stole 12 bases and
had 12 RBI’s. He was regarded as an excellent defensive player, but his secret weapon was his
speed. He was clocked at 3.8 seconds going from home plate to first on a base hit during
a Greater Newark Tournament game. That level of performance peaked the interests of the
Philadelphia Phillies professional baseball organization to offer him a tryout for their team.
It was only after a severe ankle injury that sidelined him in his senior year that the dream of
playing professionally was interrupted.
Upon graduation from Vailsburg High in 1966, he played for several semi-professional baseball
teams in the Newark Stan Musial League. Those teams included the Newark Mets, Tigers,
Sharks and the Dodgers. He helped all of the aforementioned teams, excluding the Newark
Mets, to multiple championships. He ended his baseball career as one of the most highly
regarded players in the Stan Musial Baseball League.
In 1969, he was selected to participate in a pilot program for the Brown Brothers, and Harriman
& Company, a major Wall Street investment firm. During this time, he became interested in
his second love which was basketball. He participated in various corporate leagues where
he not only played but coached. A fond memory, in 1974, was serving as player/coach in the
Newark Friendly Fuld House basketball league. Here he gathered several baseball players
and played against some of Newark’s most elite basketball teams in the city. The result was
a championship trophy in the only year they participated in the league. He later served as a
coach and advisor for friends, family and others seeking to enhance their abilities or knowledge
of their football, baseball or basketball game.
In 1987, he because a Correction Officer with the State of New Jersey. He served over 20 years
in that capacity until his retirement several years ago.
He would like to than his parents for showing him love and the importance of family. It was
due to their devotion that he has been able to instill in his sons the same type of love for family.
His greatest joy is to see the interaction between his sons and their children as they maintain
the important legacy of family. His favorite quote is “Live to Learn – Learn To Live”

James M. Lee, MD
Internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon.
Recipient of the 2007 Pioneer Sports Award
for his outstanding contributions to high school
sports in the State of New Jersey.
Orthopedic surgeon, Dr. James McCarcum Lee, came to Newark, New Jersey in 1973 from California to
practice orthopedic surgery. He was one of the first to introduce arthroscopic surgery to Essex County.
He was almost thrown off the staff for introducing a procedure where you looked into the knee through
small tiny incisions, but thankfully he was not. It was felt by his peers that the only way to see inside
the knee was with a big cut. Today, arthroscopic surgery is the most common orthopedic procedure
performed throughout the world in treating athletic injuries.
Dr. Lee has been instrumental in training many recognized sports medicine orthopedic surgeons in the
world. At Crippled Children’s Hospital, Dr. Lee and Dr.Novich, who was a pioneer of sports medicine in
NJ, conducted a sports clinic where all the injured athletics would come for treatment. They kept the
coaches, athletic trainers and physicians abreast and up-to-date about injuries in the athletes. Dr. Lee
was instrumental in setting up many symposiums, one of which was Athletic lnjuries from Head-to-Toe.
Traditionally, slide presentations had been the State-of-the-Art method for presenting material to an
audience. Dr. Lee knocked-the-socks off the audience, (which included physicians, athletic trainers and
coaches) when he introduced a video presentation for the first time demonstrating the bio-mechanics
and mechanisms of i1~uries to the athlete while they are engaged in active play on the field. In 1996,
he was appointed to the State Athletic Control Board Medical Advisory Council by Governor Christine
Whitman.
Dr. Lee and Dr. Novich opened the first National Boxing Safety Center at Presbyterian Hospital which was
designed to protect the injured boxers who had been knocked out in a fight. These athletes would have
to undergo diagnostic testing with CT scans to the brain to make sure that there was no damage before
they could reenter the ring. During the 1980s, Dr. Lee was also involved in the Olympics giving lectures on
boxing injuries at the Olympic Training Centers in Lake Placid, NY, and Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Dr. Lee was the first to set up a sports clinic at Orange Orthopedic Hospital where the injured athlete
would be bused from various schools on Monday nights to be seen for their injuries. One of the pioneers
and instrumental individuals for making this work was Mr. Edward Peart. He was sure to have all the
Shabazz athletes at the chmc on Monday night. At one time Dr. Lee was the team physician for most
of the schools in Newark, running Friday evening and all day Saturday from field-to-field to cover the
football games. He took pride in covering two schools that he loved, Central High School and Shabazz,
following these teams faithfully.
He was well respected by the athletes and at times even would have them run plays without the
knowledge of the coaches. His idea on centralizing a sports injury center at one of the high schools was
finally achieved at Shabazz High School.
As an aside, Dr. Lee also was involved in other sports, essentially breeding a world champion race horse.
In fact, he had two world champions, one of which was undefeated at the Meadowlands and also set a
world’s records not only in the Unites States but i.n Europe as well.
He continues to be engaged in sports medicine seeing athletes from various colleges, high schools and
professional sports, as well as the team physician for the Newark Express (ABA) Basketball Team. Dr.
Lee has never turned away any athlete from an injury because of the inability to pay. He continues to be
humble and serves his community with pride and dignity.

2012 Essex County College
Track & Field Olympians
The glow from the 2012 Summer Olympic games hasn’t dimmed for the 11 Essex County
College graduates who competed for Gold and Glory on the tracks and fields of London,
England.
Coach Michael Smart said “ This is what we do, what we’ve been doing for years, and what
we’re trying to continue to do, regardless of the money we don’t have.” Michael Smart in his
25th year as coach, said Olympic success started slowly - “one at a time”. But Coach Smart
since has built one of the best junior college track programs in the nation. He did so without
the benefit of a home track; team members practice where they can – mostly in parks and
borrowed school fields.
But the ECC 11 at the London Games matched Kansas’ Barton Community College for the
highest total of athletes who had, at one time or another, competed under the National Junior
College Athletic Association auspices. The alums’ three-medal haul; Demetrius Pinder’s gold in
the men’s 4x400 meter relay, Kerron Stewart’s silver in the women’s 4x100 relay and Novlene
Williams-Mills’ bronze in the women’s 4x400 relay was the highest among junior colleges this
year. Altogether, 38 of the college’s athletes have competed in various Olympics, including 11 in
Beijing four years ago
Pinder, who graduated from Texas A&M after earning an associate degree at ECC in 2009,
said the need for a track and amenities the team could call its own can’t be stressed enough. “
Imagine what we could do if we had more facilities, “please, please.” he said. With them, Pinder
said, the school would have an easier time recruiting even more world-class athletes.
Joe DiVincenzo, a NAHF inductee himself, and the current Essex County Executive, said he
was unaware the college had difficulty securing practice facilities, and was going to look into
the possibility of the college using Newark Schools Stadium in the North Ward. He said, “The
arrangement would serve a twofold purpose, with the track and field athletes and Olympians
providing stellar role models.”
But for all their sprint speed, Smart-a renowned taskmaster- said the athletes also have the
additional responsibility of succeeding in the classroom for two years if they want to compete
at four-year colleges. “When they leave here, they understand that hard work pays off
